Generally in dal pakwan we only garnish our dal with chopped onions. Dear we are sindhi and we use onion and garlic in almost all veggies. But we also made some dishes without onion garlic also.

Can't say about the taste but don't know why you first cook pakwan which must be garm when you eat . Definitely dal takes some time by that time your dal will be ready pakwan are not worth to eat . So doesn't look so delicious.
