Fire Dogs - Voice Actor Comparison
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- The following is a comparison between voice performances of Ren Hoek by John Kricfalusi and Billy West respectively. In 1991, the classic Ren & Stimpy episode, "Fire Dogs" aired on Nickelodeon in the United States, with John Kricfalusi voicing Ren. In 1993, a music video using the title of the episode was made for the musical album "You Eeediot!" It was up to Billy West to do Ren's voice for this track since John had been fired in '92. It is likely that Billy was encouraged to do an impression of John K. due to how much closer it sounds to the dog's original voice.

John sounds slightly better. But Billy did an amazing job imitating him.
@Buzz Lippman @Buzz Lippman i like John better because he's sounds more... Delicate and crisp, and better with notes, sound more aggressive.
@@Jitterskull Probably because John was just naturally aggressive in general.
Now with johns rough voice is a little different
If there Season 3 if John K didn’t get fired there would be episode called Ren Clone two voices by himself and Billy West
@Buzz Lippman but billy west hates john k
the bgm was a nice touch, too. that episode felt really empty
Actually I think Billy West is my favorite actor who did the voice of ren
0:01 Give me the background d music that you have playing
If anything, a great example of how amazing West is at not just voice acting, but impressions and imitating. He has a uncanny talent for it. This is the closest I've heard him to John K's "Ren"
Strangely Ren in early seasons actually looks cute
I agree
I kinda like that. It's a funny contradiction since he's a huge ahole.
Ren is like that small grouchy dog your grandma would own, who everyone disliked, but you'd still feel a little bad if you saw it fall down the stairs
i hated how they eventually turned ren into a little bald man by adult party cartoon.
I'm surprised a psycho Chihuahua looks adorable in that episode
While I do prefer John’s deeper voice for Ren, Billy was the one who always did his maniacal laugh and is definitely the voice more people have heard of.
They sound almost identical. That's how good they both were.
As a kid I never noticed a difference.
@@FreeArtFreestheWorld Same here

Ren: YOU SICK LITTLE OLD MONKEY!
@@BadringerGrongerKeyword “almost”
Billy's voice is more gruff, with a heavier Mexican accent.
Like Billy West said, because he's a Chihuahua, a South-of-the-Border accent is obligatory. Heck, even when Kricfalusi voiced Ren, you can hear some Mexican in him as well.
@@herr_crustovsky This is West's interpretation of the voice overall, regardless of who did it. He also interpreted Kirk Douglas rumbling beneath the surface. And in case you didn't know, Billy West isn't the one with the man crush on Kirk Douglas.
Yes it does.
@@herr_crustovsky I always thought Ren was supposed to sound Mexican.
@@xXSpongeBroBrownPantzXx John K also pitch shifted Ren originally. In Adult Party he used his natural pitch, and the difference is noticable.
John K's portrayal of of Ren was always the more...unhinged sounding. With Billy, sure , he did an excellent job but never hit that same note of barely contained madness.
Even though Billy West did all of the insane laughs?
@@godziller9976
I mean in straight voicing him. No laugh, just the spoken lines.
@@Windclaw I'm starting to think Ren is a self-insert character after all the shit I've heard about John K.
@@MidnightMuffin oh he absolutely was.
He even said so when talking about Ren Seeks Help.
@@wumpus976 Wow, that's...genuinely disturbing. If Ren torturing animals as a child was based on a true story, how did John K not become a serial killer? That's literally a telltale sign.
Lots of newer cartoons brag about how well they capture real world strugles and human nature, "He's a good man, but not quite right in the head" is the realest line I've heard in a cartoon.

@@katelynthewhitewerewolf6376 Definitely!
The soundtrack with Billy really ruins these scenes.
I heard they re-recorded everything for that album just to avoid paying Kricfalusi any royalties. A middle finger to JK of the finest order.
Dosen't john k still receive some royalties or payment for the original ren and stimpy?
I know he did for at least a while
I have the album and that’s what they did.
@@lao-grotten1101 he won't be receiving payment for the reboot.
and yes, there's going to be an adult-oriented reboot.
@@postironichno_innit I thought it already happened.
Knowing what we know now, can we really blame them? John K still has songwriting credits on the album anyhow.
0:12 John kricfalusi in a nutshell
John K. was doing a Peter Lorre impression. West is doing an impression of John K.'s impression lol.
Billy West is definitely an amazing voice actor especially when it comes to Ren And Stimpy
John k: ReLax MaN
Billy west: relax man
Jokes aside
I like John k's ren more but Billy west is an amazing impersonator
Sighhhhhhhhh John K sounds better as Ren
Sometimes Billy really nailed Ren’s voice but other times he really fucks it up
Even so, Billy can still do the Ren voice today. John, however, forgot to pretty fast.
@@TheCeraizationI actually still like APC John’s Ren better than Billy West’s Ren
Wow.
You critics in comment sections of YT nowadays are full of opinionated garbage lmao.
Kricfalusi has the ever so slight edge that comes with the state of being genuinely non-sane
I actually got to meet Billy West at Megacon at Orlando recently and even got a selfie with him. Super cool guy!
Billy West is one of my Top 5 favorite male voice actors.
i think billy west was trying to sound more like john in these clips than usual
yea he sound closer than john when he first started voicing ren
If I remember correctly apparently Billy recorded for both characters and they casted him to replace Ren after John was fired they found his demo reel.
*cast. Casted implies they threw him into a river attached to a pole.
You can hear the real Billy in the back on Ren's voice whereas with John it sounds slightly more natural and "clean"
I’ve never had that hard of a time telling them apart. John’s Ren alternates between smooth and scratchy, and has much more of an everyday man voice to him. Billy’s Ren is much raspier/scratchier, and sounds more like a cartoon character.
Then in later seasons Billy also started giving Ren a pinched nose nasal, and also the “I told you I’d shoot but you didn’t believe me” inflection. But we don’t hear any of that in these clips.
Yeah I feel like Billy's Ren went all over the place, especially his accent. The whole Peter Lorre influence slowly went in favour of just a 'whatever the hell that is' type of voice, I think Billy even admitted such.
Granted I think the actual characterisation influenced that direction too. Ren was a more....'human' character under John's run, while Games era Ren was more and more of a standard wacky jerkass. i feel while John related to Ren, the Games staff took that out on the character (since we all heard the stories about how he treated them :P).
I think a big factor in this is hearing Billy West do other work. If you’ve heard him do other stuff, You can probably tell far easier between his Ren and Johns, but as a layman like myself, the voices are practically the same.
kinda like tom kenny or patrick warburton or john dimaggio
Billy West was the voice of Sparx from the Legend of Spyro the Eternal Night!
He was also Doug Funny, Philip J. Fry and Professor Hubert Farnsworth.
@@wizarddudereborn457 Cool.
@@blairterry9435
I totally remember The Legend of Spyro Eternal Night and I like Spyro and I like Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
it's probably easier to name something he isn't in that start listing what he is.
@@wizarddudereborn457
He should be Itchy's new voice actor after Dom DeLuise
Billy west is no John Kricfalusi when it come to voicing ren but I will say Billy west It is definitely close or at least a second best choice but I definitely prefer John kricfalusi by far as ren tho.
I would have given them a tie if West was able to pull off the tone in Fire Dogs across all of his other performances. It is genuinely one-to-one in a few scenes with only line delivery being the difference.
But again, the trouble is that _most_ of the time, he sounds noticeably different. Not necessarily bad, definitely good. But in Fire Dogs, he sounded great.
Dude, seek help.
I feel like John was calmer recording and billy made it a little over the top, not complaining, just a observation
According to Billy West, they both came up with the voices and Billy was the one used for the demos and the voices were the reason Nickelodeon produced the cartoon. Afterwards, John K decides to do Rens voice and then got fired from his own show. The producers went back to the demo and discovers Billy was the voice and could audition for the voice over. So Billy would have been the original Ren voice.
Nickelodeon picked John as the voice from a range of voice actors on unmarked tapes.
@@iknoweverything4959name checks out 😅
Billy West did amazing emulating John’s voice for Ren!
John K's voice for Ren was better because it was more authentic. But Billy's was great too.

Billy West voicing Ren Hork (1993) 0:15-0:34
You mean hoek
I really don't like Billy's voice for Ren after John got fired, but in these clips he sounds identical!
Wellllll John should've known better back and he would've been still be voicing ren if he wasn't such a a-hole
So....why don't you like it then? Do you prefer the vocal stylings of kiddy fiddlers?
@@raphaelbrown6314 Exactly, like why does his fanclub that loves to bash Billy's Ren voice for no reason so much keep forgetting that he was a jerk irl??
Honestly I think john k as ren in fire dogs better than billy west
You know, I wish they would’ve paid Billy West to redub the episodes where he was not voicing Ren, like how they had Dave Coulier dub Lorenzo Music’s lines as Peter Venkman for The Real Ghostbusters.
0:28 I love this line from Ren in the Fire Dogs episode
I just realized what he said makes no sense
This show never should have died. It was South Park before the vile really kicked in.
I'm team Billy all the way if we're picking "sides", but I admit John K was the better Ren.
I agree
"John K. was better"?
More like overrated if you ask me lmao.
This episode soon spawned a shitty super nintendo game
i actually prefer billy's voice honestly.
Same
Same, who wouldn't?
Those gatekeepers for John K., that's for sure XD lol.
if you had swiched which clips are voiced by who i probably wouldn't have been able to tell
I really feel like in the reboot, Billy really just put on an accent and still sounds just like himself. Him redoing the voice in 1993 he really did a good imitation for the most part, but now I feel like he kind of forgot how he made the accent and now it's just putting off a different tone overall
Notice how Billy’s version has up beat background music
That’s probably because it’s from an album’s music video
I think the best compliment I can give Belly West here is that, when I was a kid, I had *zero* idea that John was replaced. I didn't learn about it until many years later when I read about it on Wikipedia. Even now, if you didn't tell me, I don't think I'd know. Billy was, and is, just *that* good at impressions.
I’m a cat-
Welp I’m a dog for a little-
They sound identical
Am I the only one wondering why they made ren less adorable in the later seasons being honest the cute on outside and crazy on inside kinda fits ren in my opinion
I noticed that it's especially true with episodes animated by Rough Draft. Those guys love drawing Ren with a big chin for some reason.
Billy's voice in the beginning was on par with John's, but I feel like around the end of season 4 was when he began to lose his luster as him
Uh But Ren , I'm a Cat

They are so close. i swear Billy West is a human parrot. Though i hate to say it, i do prefer John K's perfomance since hes got a slight edge to it. West always felt a tad gentler to me especially in later seasons
Nearly identical JESUS!
I just hear phillip j. Fry in rens voice now
Can you upload/link the full Fire Dogs music video?
Relax John Kay Ren and stimpy or not gay marriage as you want
This makes Stimpy look more like a dog
Just saying that John Reynolds to be not gay
There is no difference
Billy West was also Sparx in The Legend of Spyro Eternal Night.
I like Spyro Reignited Trilogy Spyro best.
I also like The Legend of Spyro.
I honestly never noticed the change as a kid. Though id often wonder why only West was credited as the voice of both in later seasons, but i still assumed because John K still had creator credits. Then Nickelodeon features a small segment where Bob Camp is the responsible one, and id be left in the dark about all the hubbub with John

You can tell that it is billy west voicing REN most of the time his voice sound way higher then John k and he dosen sound as crazy or entergetic as him but he still does a great job voicing him.
Billy's Ren sounds... a little happier? Like, not as low and deadpan as Kricfalusi's Ren
but otherwise they sound REALLY alike

Tbh billy west did an amazing job imitating him that i didnt even notice it was billy :0
Billy is the better actor. Because he actually has acting skill.
Billy is the better actor but John's voice is only marginally better. Honestly, if Billy always voiced Ren then it probably wouldn't have ever made a difference to the success of the show.
Billy's Ren has more of the Peter Lorre influence
I could barely tell them apart
John K. all the way.
You know? As a kid, I couldn't tell the difference between the two.
My ears a little more critical now, but Billy West did a very good job filling John K's shoes as Ren's voice.
I love all voices of ren höek these all sound good❤
Watch out man here come the fire dogs!

@Eli Santin Holy shit, the description is actually a description
It’s so infuriating that John had to not only be an insufferable asshole, but also be a pedo sex pest groomer. Part of me thinks “he could have done so much more and gone down as an undeniable legend”
but then, I’m not so sure that animation and cartoons really needed more Spümco influence than it already had in the 2000s. It was always very obvious when an artist was an acolyte of his, and that influence in their style and work would just kinda feel like a knockoff.
I’m kinda at this very moment realizing that Ren & Stimpy’s only lasting and worthwhike contribution to animation was its pioneering of the “gross-out shot” that SpongeBob was the absolute pinnacle of.
Fun fact: Billy West voiced Ren in the Games Animation era after John Kricfalusi got fired after season 2 was done
He good man
It’s interesting cause apparently Billy auditioned for ren and Stimpy but John K insisted on playing ren
Billy' is more breathy, sounds slightly less 'natural'. He did pretty well, though
Billy's Ren voice is higher than John's.
John and Billy’s version of Ren’s voice sounds the exact same. I can’t even tell the difference.
You know what’s surprising is that despite John’s firing in 1992 and the show being toned down after it still ran until 1996.
I'd hardly say toned down. Tons of Kricfalusi storyboards were used for the remaining seasons. He had tons of ideas.
Billy West is the best!

Billy West Isn't That The Same Guy Who Voices The Red M&M
I’m impressed with how similar they sound.
YOUR PROBLEM ARE OVER, BECAUSE WE ARE YOUR FIRE DOGS
I pick Billy West over John K. because, why not? lol.
Say what you will about him, John K is better as Ren. No disrespect to Billy West
Whatever, you stans for John K's Ren voice have always been pains in my ass anyway.
Billy, you're great, and this is no exception, but that first line delivery cracked me up a bit!
I LOVE THE MUSIC FROM REN AND STIMPY
Spider-Man hit Ren and Stimpy with a bagel and this happened to them
A. Him facing powdered toast man is a canon event
B. Spot and Spotty
Sounds the same if recorded on a old or new setup. I like john k subtle inflection better though. Both great.
Meaning the new equipment makes it sound cleaner and more pleasing to the ear but a charming subtlety is missed
West’s Ren voice here is better than his Seasons 3-5 voice
I think I prefer Billy's
Im pretty sure the Billy one came from a promo
why Ren has an Italian accent?
