  • A medieval shipwreck known as the “Mortar Wreck” was discovered off England’s southern coast. Scientists were able to test the timbers of the ship and determine that it dates back to the 13th century. The 750-year-old site is the oldest known wreck in which the ship’s hull is still visible. According to maritime archaeologist Tim Cousins, some of the artifacts found in the wreck, “are in immaculate condition, like they were carved yesterday.”

      Even though I have a scuba diving license, I've also always been afraid of the ocean. I think more preserved shipwrecks seem less terrifying; to me, it's because they don't have all that deep sea clutter consuming and creating contorted shapes out of wrecks.

      Im no expert but I think the large amounts of oil they drowned the wood in when building the ships made the wood water repellent for around 100+ years and as time went by the sand started piling up ontop of the wood creating a shield of armor to protect it for all these years

Then the next shot is of Sandbanks, one of the most wealthiest piece's of land in the UK! That is part of Poole Bay though!. There's been plenty of activity around Poole Harbour over the centuries. I was on an archaeological dig on the west side of the bay and that was Iron Age.

      @officialaoj8951 2 роки тому

      While it definitely holds plenty of untold stories, it certainly can't compare to space. It's hard for any human to actually comprehend the size of our expanding universe due to its size. Our ocean is indescribably tiny, tiny, tiny compared to space.
      The observable universe spans some 28 billion light-years (93 billion light-years in diameter, as it is still expanding).
      It is home to about 10-billion superclusters (like the Virgo Supercluster).
      It has an estimated 350-billion large galaxies (like the Milky way).
      It houses about 30-billion-trillion stars; that is 30,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars!
      The Earth is about 3.5 million times larger than a human.
      The Solar System is about 36 billion times larger than Earth (3.6 X 10^10).
      The Local Group is 5 million times larger than the Solar System (1.4 X 10^17 times larger than Earth)
      The Virgo Supercluster is 11 times larger than the Local Group (1.5 X 10^18 times larger than Earth
      The Pisces-Cetus Supercluster Complex is 12 times larger than the Virgo Supercluster (1.9 X 10^21 times larger than Earth)
      And Finally, the Observable Universe is 10 times larger than the Pisces-Cetus Supercluster Complex (1.9 X 10^22 times larger than Earth)
      In summary, the ocean is ridiculously small.

      @@MrFriendlyCsgoContent one could argue that people should just leave shipwrecks like this alone as most of the time a shipwreck becomes a final resting place for those aboard. I personally think it's ok to bring up a few pieces for historical purposes but they should for the most part just let those people's likely final resting place be.

    And this is why nothing much older than this is ever really found.
    Took perfect conditions to preserve a ship from only 750 years ago. Imagine what has been lost that is thousands of years old or maybe even tens of thousands, If humans had a great civilization before the ice age there would be no evidence of it left.
