I like it! Just enough additions to make it strategic without getting confusing. The original version is still my favorite solitaire game so thanks again : )
I found your channel looking for more card games to play outside of Solitaire while working third shift and to this day I play Clear the Dungeon all the time and I've told people about it irl, thank you for making these videos you've saved me from boredom more times than I can count! Also as a DND nerd, this game is just so fun! :)
Do you mean Klondike? Solitaire is the term for any solo card game. Klondike is the most well known traditional solitaire game using 7 columns and 4 foundations.
Love this variant rule set! The original clear the dungeon started me on my love of solitaire games. I've even invented a few myself since then. Can't wait to give this a try!
@riffleshuffleandroll I've thought a lot about creating a channel to upload my solitaire games, but I don't really have the technology to film. Maybe someday!
I have been working on a card game that is inspired by escape the dungeon. It's played very similarly except for a few rule changes The ace of spaces and the ace of hearts are put into the monster deck and then you Remove the ace of diamonds and the ace of clubs from play. The dungeon is shaped in a Dimond starting with one card on the top, the two the three then four then three then two then one. The shape of the dungeon should look like a dimond. Instead of five hit points and then you die its now seven hit points. The kings have the same abilities as in this version but also the two aces also have a special ability. The aces are picked up just like jokers so no need to attack them. Each ace is worth 11 attack points. When the Ave of spades is played the monster that you killed then becomes an attack card. If the monster is a king after the attack the king is then put into your inventory for kinds like you just picked it up. When the ace of hearts is played and used one hit point is taken away. If you haven't taken a hit keep the card until the do get hit with a hit point. If you run our of attack cards during the game shuffle the deck then draw 25 cards and use that as a draw deck I have decided to call this game Dimond dungeon because of the space of the dungeon. I think it would be awesome if you did a video on since I don't have any real equipment and would probably just use my phone.
If I may make a suggestion I think that losing the two other aces is a shame, but it is both to aid in the design of the layout and balance so it's fair. I think a better idea would be to actually choose which aces you keep and which ones you discard, that way you have a way to build for specific ways to play. Ace of spades: changed slightly since letting you use monster cards to attack would more or less let you instakill the ones layed out. I think a better idea would be to still let you do that, but have the values of the cards halved and rounded (J=5, Q=6, K=7). Ace of diamonds: You get to take a card from the discard or hit pile and play it on the next turn. Ace of hearts: No changes, you get to take a card off the hit pile, essentially getting one more hit. Ace of clubs: You get to reveal an unrevealed monster, letting you plan ahead. Honestly this might be the weakest one but I had no other ideas. So you keep two aces on the layout and can plan ahead to get them, and in exchange you don't get the benefits of the other two aces. Lastly I think bumping up the value of the aces up to 11 is a bit unbalanced, since it would let you deal way too much damage to the monsters. The kings don't do direct damage for the same reason. I think keeping them as 1 is fair since you'll be playing them on top of the drawn cards. You can use them as a little boost on top of the cards you are already playing, potentially even letting you get to the exact value needed to kill a monster. In fact keeping their value as 1 AND letting the two powerless aces back in the deck adds another element of luck to the game, where there is a small chance to get miserably low cards that still have to be played as normal, but still a lower chance than the default since the default has 4.
Great question! You still need to have three cards total for the attack. The king only modifies the card it’s placed on - it does not count as one of the three cards. Does that help? ☺️
I like the set up of this vs the original version of 4 rows. It reminds me of Pyramid with having to unlock cards I prob wouldn’t use the Hits. I already try to be economical with card usage. I could always try it And interesting aspect of the kings giving you some perks
Hi Mark, I love Clear the Dungeon very well done, it's A gem and I enjoy playing it. I have A couple of questions about 1.2. (I want to play by your official 1.2 rules Mark LOL I truly do, I really like the challenge in Clear the Dungeon 1.2 as well as the New additions of 1.2). Clear the Dungeon Scenario 1: In update 1.2 if one currently has the 3 card in hand as 2 Jokers appear after A previous attack, will one immediately add 2 Jokers to their hand making A total of 5 cards they are holding? (side note I am not sure if this Scenario would happen if the face down cards are turned face up before the 3 cards were drawn. Which I think is your intended way to play. So this may be A hypothetical, I'm not sure Lol). Clear the Dungeon Scenario 2: Player has 3 cards in hands as well as A Kings draw ability. May the player use the Kings draw ability making A total of 4 cards in hand in update 1.2? Input muchly appreciated:
In version 1.2, it is possible to have more than three cards in your hand. In scenario 1, you immediately pick up the jokers and add them to your hand. In scenario 2, you could use the king and have four cards in your hand. Hope this helps! ☺️
Awesomeness, Clear as a Dungeon :-D thank you Mark. You have a great channel and I love your videos. Solo RPG games that use playing cards for the core mechanics is a very limited area. Games like Clear the Dungeon and Scoundrel were the first well developed solid games I found in this small genre. Clear the Dungeon has and will continue to inspire other games with its core mechanics. I hope you have a great night Mark.
Its really interesting. I am still learning. However, I didnot understand the Hit part. I can take up to 5 hits? 1 hit = set of 3 cards? or when you take a hit, the cards on your hand that is useless is considered to be hit. That can be any amount of card. 1,2 or the whole set which is 3.
One card that is discarded is considered one hit. As soon as you take five hits, you "die". So once five cards are discarded, you have taken five hits. Hope that helps!
can jokers be used as trigger cards? also if a joker is revealed on the first turn do i draw 2 cards as the joker is technically the 3rd card or do i just draw 3 cards from the power deck like normal plus the joker making it 4 cards in my hand
As soon as a joker is revealed, add it to your hand. You do not draw until your hand is empty. So, in that case you must use the joker before drawing back up to three cards. Yes, a joker can be used as a trigger. ☺️
Hey my friends, A) me and my girlfriend are looking forward to trying Race the dungeon (where with two decks you compete) and B) I am thinking of modifying the rules and numbers to allow for tarot cards with all major arcana taken out, any thoughts?
I like it, but the randomness of being forced to take a hit because of a poor draw seems a bit unfair, especially for players who might want to dodge taking any hits. Perhaps more inspiration from Gridcannon and adding a way to avoid a hit at a cost could be a bit better? I'm thinking, again, drawing from Gridcannon, having you either add armour to an enemy or a weakness to your own attacks. I'll playtest this rule and see how it feels and get back to you in an update in the replies!
Am I the only one who finds this game very hard to win?! I like the concept, but I've played several times and never even come close to winning. I think I'm playing it right-- might have to homebrew it to give myself more hits b4 I die lol
Can the king of spades be used on an attack card that is already down and overlapped by another power card? Or can the king only x2 the power of the most recent attack card
I really like the additions, to this already awesome game. I'm adding this video to my playlist of "thematic" solitaire games. Thanks! ua-cam.com/play/PLpMrSy-mP-loOsppCSB4yk8_ek3fIIWhj.html
I think it would be nice and challenging if you couldnt give the joker its value on its own - but rather that the jokers value mirror whatever card it pairs with. A small detail but i think it would add some nice and niche complexity
I know this is a silly problem to have but I prefer games that require less space. The new layout isn't feasible for my situation. Just looking to play something to pass time where I can.
The king powers didn’t seem to make sense and having the joker in the layout didn’t either I like the Concept of having abilities but again there hard to make sense like the heart king removes a card but doesn’t get replaced I gave it a try didn’t seem to run as smooth as I hoped
yeah, I played the original before it was good. I tried this one while leaving the jokers in the dungeon with the original rules. And it kind of work, but kind of didn’t so I see why the kings needed the abilities so as I kept playing, I had to modify the kings. An add one extra life, so instead of five it six, and it seem to work out better, and you could set up different layouts to make it different or more interesting that also changed the difficulty either way not a bad upgrade to a cool game
Ok, maybe I don't understand all the rules, but I have try multiple time this game and I'm pretty frustrated because look like a can't win. Each time I draw 3 cards I can't play and the game is over pretty quickly.
Can you give me an example of what you mean? The only time you cannot play a card is if the number doesn’t help you get to the total needed, or it is the wrong suit to be a trigger. How many jokers are you using?
For exemple Only one monster are on the board but I have already placed 2 cards on it, All the cards I draw don't give the final blow. Or I have 1 card on the monster, but all cards I draw don't sum for the total of life.
I like it! Just enough additions to make it strategic without getting confusing. The original version is still my favorite solitaire game so thanks again : )
That’s awesome. Thank you for the kind words. ☺️

@@cuddlequeen3225Klondike is so popular that most people simply call it solitaire. The game has become synonymous with the genre. 😊.

I really liked the first version of this game, but it didn't hold me. These changes made it much more engaging. You did a great job
Thank you ☺️

Now I just need to choose a deck of my collection to play.
