That era's is gone... It can never bring that back. I loved the 40s, 50s and 60s...It was hard times but the style, and coolness was never duplicated in any other era. Sorry babes from the 70's..(LOL)
Music doesn't get any better than this song..Sam's voice was amazing....It's no wonder they fell in love or lust listening to this. Our brightest stars are only given for a short time... the burn the brightest and leave...
Cary Grant looked at my mother and aunts with the same expression. When this movie was made, Sophia was not legally married to Ponti because of Italian law and I doubt she wanted to rock the boat. Cary was still married and didn't divorce that wife until 2-3 years after the movie was released. Don't forget that, at least from a woman's point of view, Cary Grant on film was the most charming man that may have ever walked the earth. I can't think of a contemporary who even comes close. Too bad he married Dyan Cannon...
Carl Yorke it was actually in their previous movie--The Pride and The Passion--people get this fact mixed up...the making of this was pure torture for Grant as Loren was, I believe, already married to Ponti.
+katie Vigeant I completely agree with you. He is possibly the most glamorous and charismatic star there ever has been in film. He is quite mesmerising on the screen. Funnily enough, despite this he was never a favourite of mine.
Never saw Sophia look so beautiful watched this movie recently Oldies are the best Actors dressed properly then. Now they want to show everything Love cary he had it all
SOPHIA IS NOT ONLY A WONDERFUL WOMAN. SHE'S A TRUE PROFESSIONAL ACTRESS. I'm from Naples as Sophia and I'm very proud of her because she is the opposite of common places about neapolitans. She got a fierce will, not lazy at all but very energetic, has always studied to improve herself in acting and learning languages: she speaks fluent English and French. She's not only a wonderful woman, she's a true professional, punctual and she's has always worked very hard to achieve best results in her amazing career.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this scene, most romantic on film and it's all done with the eyes and a delicate touch... of course, they were in love at the time.. off screen...you can really see it here.
Totally agree...probably my all time favorite "romance" scene. 30 seconds of passion! I saw this film when I was 12 or 13 and even then I knew something special was happening!
He wanted her badly but she didnt want him. That's in Sophia's biography. She wrote he was obsessive for her and she had to turn him down. I don't know why but she seems a little uncomfortable.
My favorite romantic moments in any movie. Cary Grant actually fell in love with Sophia in this movie but she stayed devoted to Carlos love it so much better than showing it all
I thank you for posting, that was a movie so nice, relaxing, with actors who were really "stars". And that song.. is something that's beautiful to dance with a girl in the arms..
Sophia is wearing my favorite dress from this movie. This is my favorite scene, I wish there were a recording of this version of "Almost In Your Arms" available. I have his 45 release of the other version. Thanks for posting this!
"Almost in Your Arms" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song (but lost to "Gigi"). It was written not by Sam Cooke but by Livingston & Evans, who won Oscars for "Buttons & Bows," "Mona Lisa" and "Qué Sera Sera." A singer is not nominated for an Oscar unless he wrote the song. The soundtrack of the movie was not nominated. I would not be surprised if James Darren or any white performer was chosen to sing the song at the ceremonies over Cooke. It was still the 50s, after all.
I saw this movie at a theater probably around 1960. I was a little guy then and was envious of the kids in the movie because of the boat. Later I saw the electricity between Grant and Loren. This scene with just the exchange of glances speaks volumes of how well the movie was filmed. Ok, I still have a crush on SL too!
It's about timethis clip got added. I have been checking for months. Best scene in the movie but most of all this song by Sam Cooke is the best. Thanks.
I love this film, and love the part when she takes the stereotypical gaudy gown, gifted to her by the snob sister in law of Grant, and turns it into complete class, which Loren, in my mind, is. Her beauty is still with her, and us, and I don't care if she has had work or not, whatever the rumors are (I would too, if I could afford it). Favorite scene is, though, when they are driving to the houseboat, and she sings 'bing bang bong' in Italian and English. Enchanting, both of them.
Love this movie. Love Cary Grant. Love Sophia Loren. But, what I love most about this clip is Sam Cooke singing "Almost In Your Arms." I only wish they had cut the dialog for that brief minute or so he was singing!!! Thanks so much for posting this!!!!!
Been longing to get this on dvd , will try on Amazon. The sexual chemistry between Sophia (wasnt she just so beautiful) and Cary Grant is electrifying. With some witty humour thrown in. One of my fav movies of all time. Enjoy !
The most revealing comment Grant made about his affair with Sophia Loren was given to Peter Bogdanovich. When talking about filming 'The Pride and the Passion' with Loren, Grant said, "We tore up a few bullrings in Spain, I can tell you that!"
I still feel this way about my husband. Ill ask him to dance this song with me Tommorrow. Married 24 yrs. When I let Jesus pick out a husband for me He did it right but I had to give all to God first. God gave me back 10x more than what I gave Him. As long as I kept trying to pick men I thought were right I just got my heart broken. Jesus loves us ladies. He only want the best for his daughters. Let Him take over. Do things Gods way no matter how hard & He will bless u beyond belief
I agree. I prayed for God to send me a kind, loving man who would always treat me nice...and he did. Leave it in God's hands is definitely the way to go!
Thanks ,Houseboat came on tonight.I love the movie. But I love this scene, with Sam Cooke!I waited to see it for this, when my nephew called. And I missed it,not wanting to rush him off.Thank you again!
Fun fact concerning Cary Grant's view on Sophia Loren: Grant had his prejudiced reservations against "yet another Italian girl in Hollywood", but he ended up falling madly in love with this girl that there were actual plans to get married as soon as the divorce from his third wife would be final. Ironically enough, that was the same time when her other "almost-husband" of many years could finally get through with the divorce from his first wife (after having officially lived with Sophia for a long time anyway). And to top off that wild story, Ponti and Loren got married a few days before she and Grant shot the wedding scene on the set of Houseboat... Let that whole love triangle sink in for a moment! No scriptwriter could come up with such a 'the one that got away' plot.
Yesterday I saw Sophia's son doing an special interview with her on tv and I learned so many wonderful things about her including her love for Gary Grant which I never knew, then they showed this clip and it just blew me away. No mistake their and no acting either you can tell this was genuine love the way they both looked at teacher which made the scene for me one of my instant favorites. And the song? My God, what a perfect complementary. Sam's soft voice was magical.
Cary was in love with Sophia and she had to decide to stay with Carlo Ponti or go with Cary Grant , i belive she made the right decision to stay with Carlo !
This Sam Cooke version is very rare. I have been looking for this recording for ages but I now doubt it was ever recorded for release either as a single or as a soundtrack. I have the VHS of this 1958 Romantic Comedy movie. I love the movie. And the song... just perfect for the dancing scene.
@spagandtuna I think, when we like certain actors, we expect much from them. Let's look at Nicole Kidman....she makes some great films, aka 'The Hours'...then makes 'Bewitched'...which was crap. I don't think 'Houseboat' was crap, but really light. Grant's detachment was the point. She was put there to make him aware of their presence. All actors, great, not so great, make films that will be classic one day, and some won't. Remember, 'Wizard of Oz' was panned when released and now, is classic.
There was a person who posted this scene in high def and it had great sound. I had to rip the track from it. I have to sit through five min of dialog but it sounds great!!!
I love Sophia Loren in this movie. Sophia and Cary really work well together. They must have been pretty close off camera because Cary wanted to marry Sophia. I do not know what Sophia saw in Carlo Ponti except that he was Italian instead of English - a bit of a cultural difference. I also believe that Cary was already married - a big reason why Sophia did not marry Cary! Apparently Cary was willing to leave his wife for Sophia. Robert Osborne talks about it but not in great detail.
Sophia was in love with Cary as much as he was in love with her, but she'd been involved with Carlo Ponti longer and while this movie was being made, he married Sophia by proxy in Mexico, so she and Cary never got together. She had a happy life with Carlo, though.
Cary isn't acting. He's totally absorbed by her in real life. The muscles in his neck are like ropes.
Sophia Lauren = Italian goddess ✨
Cary Grant = American icon
Houseboat = one of Hollywood’s best movies
this song was robbed of an Oscar!
the voice , the couple , perfect glimpse of a past time
That era's is gone... It can never bring that back. I loved the 40s, 50s and 60s...It was hard times but the style, and coolness was never duplicated in any other era. Sorry babes from the 70's..(LOL)
I love HIM..SUCH A GENTLE MAN...THE WAY HE LOOKS AT HER😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤...GREAT ACTORS...ICONS!!! 😢😢😢😢
two of the most beautiful people ever dancing to a beautiful piece of music - like an out of body experience excuse me I have to leave
'one look can write a book', one look from Cary Grant could write an encyclopedia if you ask me!!!!
This is magic
❤ This is a beautiful romantic and haunting love song and Cary Grant a charming and handsome leading man. A great film.
This sense of secrecy between them makes the scene so steamy :::just hold your breath and be watchful!!
back when movies were enjoyable and worth watching. nice music too.
I wanna see this movie so bad. It looks so good. They would have been a power couple back then. They look like they really love each other.
No they didn't Sophia married Carlo while making this...he's was a friend of my grandfather.
What a terrific scene! My favorite singer (Sam Cooke) and one of my favorite actors (Cary Grant). Thanks for posting this!
Adore this tune along with Cary & Sophia! Absolutely a fave of mine! Will always be one of my all time favorite movies and tunes!
Cary is the sexiest man in the whole world even now in 2016 - and Sophia is the incarnation of an Italian Goddess! Her eyes...
EVEN MORE,,,, IN 2018 TIL THE END OF TIME, CARY WILL BE THE SEXIEST MOST HANDSOME MAN ON THE PLANET INFINITY AND BEYOND! 💋❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤💋
you know they were both a couple of arseholes dont you
2020 and Cary Grant is still the sexiest human being ever.
Sofia is from Napoli. So she is Greek (Ελληνίδα-Ellinida).
@@user-xx4im2mr7o My mother and grandmother are both from Naples.
And they're I T A LI A N
With the song in the background and the attraction between Sophia and Cary...WOW!
This is so beautiful!! The way they look at each other, the attraction is tangible. The beautiful song also adds to this sensual scene.
Music doesn't get any better than this song..Sam's voice was amazing....It's no wonder they fell in love or lust listening to this. Our brightest stars are only given for a short time... the burn the brightest and leave...
She is still alive 😂
He was in love with her and tried to lure her away from Carlo Ponti during the filming of this movie. Can see it in the way he looks at her....
Cary Grant looked at my mother and aunts with the same expression. When this movie was made, Sophia was not legally married to Ponti because of Italian law and I doubt she wanted to rock the boat. ***** Very odd voice he had, don't you think?
Yes, he did. Perhaps that is what put me off slightly.
+katie Vigeant
I completely agree with you. He is possibly the most glamorous and charismatic star there ever has been in film. He is quite mesmerising on the screen. Funnily enough, despite this he was never a favourite of mine.
One of the Most Sensual scenes in a movie from the 50's. Thank you sooo much for posting it. Sophia and Cary.....OMG A match made in Heaven.... Brett
Never saw Sophia look so beautiful watched this movie recently
Oldies are the best
Actors dressed properly then. Now they want to show everything
Love cary he had it all
this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written , sung with such tenderness that even sam could not duplicate on his later released version
Oh, this is so romantic and wonderful dance, love the song and...LOVE Cary and Sophia!!!
Ooooh so much sexier and romantic than the "sex scenes" so common today.
SOPHIA IS NOT ONLY A WONDERFUL WOMAN. SHE'S A TRUE PROFESSIONAL ACTRESS.

Salute' Bella Mia Sophia!!! 🎉🎇🎇🎆💄 capishio!
They dindn't act in this scene.. This scene is too real
my mom and dad had this song on a
78 back in the 50's. i played it so
much, that i learned the words. it is
a pretty song.
Loved this film "House Boat" Adored Sophia Loren.
I love how she just "fixes" this dress and it's somehow the most stunning couture gown ever!
i'll in love with sam cooke's voice!!!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this scene, most romantic on film and it's all done with the eyes and a delicate touch... of course, they were in love at the time.. off screen...you can really see it here.

Beautiful couple
romance was a different level back then ---beautiful
Sophia had a different look in this movie...thinner than she used to be but absolutely stunning! With that golden dress is really breathtaking!
This is one of the most romantic scenes filmed
My favorite romantic moments in any movie. Cary Grant actually fell in love with Sophia in this movie but she stayed devoted to Carlos love it so much better than showing it all
No, he actually fell for her in The Pride and the Passion. Houseboat was a difficult movie to make because there was tension after she rejected him.
Sam Cooke’s rich voice play’s so perfectly with this scene❤️
Sophia Loren has been my heart throb since I was a teeny so beautiful and so full of life and passion, that is what lights my fire.
Timeless, waxes better through the years
I love Sophia Loren and Carey Grant!!!
I thank you for posting, that was a movie so nice, relaxing, with actors who were really "stars". And that song.. is something that's beautiful to dance with a girl in the arms..
I LOVE SAM COOKE'S VOICE

Wow! Magical

Luv this movie. Part of it filmed in Alexandria, va. Amusement place, across the Potomac river at Marshall hall from Alexandria.

They loved each other. She didn't want to leave Italy. He didn't want to leave Hollywood. 😢
what a scene! you dont have take off your cloths to have a romantic scene wow two top actores thanks
from one of the rarest soundtrack , i would kill for for a copy without the dialogue .
It's on UA-cam.
Daniel Forte sam Cooke actually did 3 versions of the song and you can hear all 3 on UA-cam
Dancing to the heavenly voice of the legendary sam Cooke
Great movie - we had the LP soundtrack from it and I rushed to get the sheet music to learn to play Almost In Your Arms on piano.
Cary was in love with Sophia and she had to decide to stay with Carlo Ponti or go with Cary Grant , i belive she made the right decision to stay with Carlo !
Interesting similarity with william holden/Kim Novac dance in 'Picnic' released a few years earlier. Both very beautifully shot.
1.44 I would have passed out
Making love with their eyes.

Heard this at a wedding and my older sisters told me it was from this movie.
