It might have been a dumb mistake for you. But for everybody watching you just educated everybody thank you. There is a bright side. Stay safe have a great day.
Traction tracks are about 60 bucks for a pair on Amazon, cheap investment, even if you don't use them for years, it's peace of mind and an inexpensive out..Keep the videos coming, been a viewer from the van days.
Don't cheap out on the traction boards. The cheap ones break and WILL need replaced. Pony up for either MaxTrax or ActionTrax for about $300/pair. They don't break. Buy once, cry once. But certainly get the traction boards for this kind of wet dirt, snow, sand, etc.
If you get them get at least two sets, 8 would be better but storage becomes a problem. A set for under tires and to place in front of them then leap frog them... 👍 It's been a long time since I've been to Green river KY.
TRACGRABBER blocks are incredible. They are rubber blocks that strap to your tire and will get you out of a lot of messes just like the one you were in. I work alone usually in the middle of nowhere and they've saved me countless times.
Thanks for the heads-up. Missouri in the springtime can be hazardous too. Had to traverse bridges with an inch of water running over it. Took the leap with MY Class A...held my breath and made it across. Almost learned the hard way....been lucky more times than I can count. Happy Trails!!
Grass is bad, but what you were on is "flood plain silt" That is so finely ground clay that even a few drops of rain turn it into something slicker than grease gun grease. You cannot move even dead level without a winch. Remember that for river camping. I learned that lesson with an F150 pickup, so yeah that big RV ain't going anywhere on that stuff. My pickup truck was not sinking at all but that half inch layer of silt stopped me dead until I got winched out.
I have been watching your channel for years. Your videos never cease to amaze me! Between the great camera work, editing, choices of music, commentary, and exciting content. Not to mention the time and effort you put into every detail! Very enjoyable! Thanks for letting me tag along for the adventures! And stay safe out there!
Oh yeah. I'm parked behind my Mom's while I act as her caregiver. It's really hard to get through everyone's heads that my RV will sink if I don't stay on the gravel. LOL
I actually LOVED this video. I can't say much about your mistake of the flash flooding around these parts, but hey, I learned something new. I don't own an RV, just a SUV, but the idea of parking on wet grass is a lesson learned.
I found a website called Odysee I don't know if you've heard of it, it's a UA-cam alternative, Monetization is easy to understand and 100% of the viewer generated proceeds go to you the Creator, the FAQ on Monetization of Content is worth a read also it's easy to migrate your UA-cam content. PS, great video, I hope you found this comment informative just trying to help the best I can, because we all know UA-cam Don't care about us content creators, I believe it's a solid platform. stay safe Eric n jax, Looks like homebase needs a drainage system around the house & drained out the back end of the property or into a street drain (if any )
Looks like when you put in the RV pad gravel, you created a dam. Dig yourself a trench out to the street or near by place where water will drain away. Put in a solid wall pipe to drain water away.
I totally agree with you. That’s exactly what I was thinking. I think the problem arises when we panic… I know it’s happened to me before I panic and had I just calm down and thought about a plan… And maybe the load of the bike didn’t help Poor guy!!! I wonder if he carries a shovel with him? ✌️
You might want to start thinking about having a foundation built under your base camp a few feet high. Yeah, you'll have to empty it for a while, but they can lift your house up and set it on the new, higher foundation. Having been flooded myself, even a few inches is no kind of fun, I promise you. Of course, ask your neighbors if it has flooded there, and your realtor should have access to flood zone maps. That's a good fall project.
When it rains, it pours - Literally! I was just being envious of you and your adventures suffering thru my work day and then I watched this. We never know when a shit-storm is around the corner. The key is to Survive and Learn from it! Keep moving forwards, Eric! Your head and heart are in the right place!
Hope you enjoyed your brief stop in Paducah! If you've never done it, try and make it back in the fall time for BBQ on the River! It's absolutely insane, and some of the best BBQ in the tri-state area!
Not to be a Monday morning quarter back- but that situation wouldn’t have been have as terrible if you had a good highlift jack, and a couple straps in the RV- or some straps and a good, heavy come-along. Don’t get me wrong, either situation would have taken hours, but if it came down to getting away from a rising river- I bet you’d have made it work. Good vid though, learned a lot watching this one.
I carried a 5 pound bag of sand on my trucks and yep one is in Minnie for that JIC of getting stuck. Yes, sand is better than kitty litter which is clay and when clay gets wet it gets as slippery as that mud you're in! Lol But it works on mud,Snow and ice! I even sanded an exit off I70 in Indiana so I could get to the pilot! It helped a few drivers and a IHP officer get up to the road!
Love your videos, but please don't beat yourself up over a mistake. We all know better, we all screw up: that's life. But what a great teaching moment for the rest of us! (I know, that doesn't help you at all!) You're videos are so well done, especially the travelogues. You're a great tour guide and with steady pictures. Really a pleasure to watch, even when things go wrong. Keeping it positive. My kitty Zoe says "hi" to Jax.😺
Hey Eric, for now, just get some rubberized hose that fits around your downspouts that are about 30 feet long and expand when water runs through them to get the water flowing away from your house from the gutters. Otherwise, you can add downspout extensions.
Will not work the problem is the ground water. What he needs to do is to install a outdoor sump pit and sump pump. something like a zoller m53 or m98. Along with it you will have to install something like ads quick and easy flow perforated pipe. With a couple of 6 x 6 catch basins. Those will have to be piped into the sump pit. Along with the down spouts using 4 inch solid corrugated flex pipe with down spout adapters. The discharge line should be 1 1/2 pvc pipe going out to the street so the water can go down the storm drain. For more information in Eric's area contact Chris of Atlantic drains Columbus, Ohio. For online Skype consultations world wide. Contact Chris's brother Chuck at Apple Drains. Yard, basement, and crawl space drainage experts. Trusted and recommended by your neighbors.
Eric, suggestions ... 1) add permanent mount pads for your go pro and arms to specific locations on your rig. 2) get some single tire snow chains for your rig ... they work for snow and also mud ... they will increase your traction in mud too. you can mount them by using your leveling jacks to raise one dually set at a time off the ground to put on the chain ... another idea is carry some off road traction planks ... look for traction boards online or at an off road store /dealer. Also nect time you get tires get some ... at least for the rear ... all terrain tires with a slightly more aggressive and open tread pattern. check out "the Grabber" traction device too!
1. Place the boards under the hydraulic supports and raise the bus 2. Place boards under the rear wheels and get on the road at ease Or 3. A hand winch will pull your bus out in 10 minutes
Eric, we all make mistakes. You're safe now and I'm glad. You did get some beautiful drone shots. Appreciate all the effort to put into your videos. Wishing you well 🙂
"Daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenburg county down by the Green River where Paradise lay." "I'm sorry my son, but you are too late in asking. Mr. Peabody's coal train has hauled it away" - John Prine. You were just a few miles from the inspiration of one of the greatest folk songs in history.
I'm sure someone maybe has already mentioned that you seriously need to carry some recovery boards with you. Shoving sticks and twigs and crap under your tires is doing nothing more than begging for a sidewall puncture. X-Bull or Billit4x4 both make some great heavy duty recovery boards. They are easily stowed And we'll always be there to save your azz when you need them.
Eric, I really enjoyed that Kentucky intro; I have a question about the behind-the-scenes aspect of your filming, when you’re using the drone, can the drone achieve a stable/still perspective such as that video sequence that looks camera perspective must be sitting still all the way up in the trees? Also, I wish that somehow you could filming your self, such that we would be shown all the aspects of what you do, such as how you place your camera along your route (like in the Florida kayak video) or fly the drone while you’re driving...please.
The rock formation looks like slate. There’s a lot of slate in the Finger Lakes. We also have a lot of water falls. If you haven’t traveled along the lakes, you should put it on your to-do list.
The puddle near the corner of your house isn't up against the foundation, so you are ok. Its not that bad. Our backyard floods every time it rains here. Just maybe regrade that area sloping down and away from the house or get 1/2 dumptruck of clean fill dirt. Nice to see Jax is chill as always. I've learned to buy a set of TracGrabber blocks for the driving wheels to keep for emergencies that someone posted.
I live near where you got stuck, I have gotten stuck on a slight incline with a 4 wheel drive and mud tires, don't underestimate the slickness of Kentucky Clay.
I feel ya bro, Got my 4x4 stuck in mud up to the body at the lake - TOW $400 Got my boat stuck on a sand bar in Lake Havasu - TOW $450 The Trips - PRICELESS
Cool video. I live in Paducah. Next time you head down this way, stop in Grand Rivers and camp at the Canal Campground, it is maintained by the US Army Corp of Engineers. Then have dinner at Patti's 1880's Restaurant.
Eric, you may be broke & self-shaming yourself for where you parked but I must say that your subscribers understand, appreciate the concern, and most of all we are smiling for your experience that we didn't have to deal with. Thanx again for another great video!!
This is why I carry a come along, straps, snatch block and extra rope. It may have taken 2 hrs put you could have inched your RV back onto the road. You can also get an electric wrench mounted on a plate that will slide into your hitch. You may never need it again, but you'll have peace of mind.
Buy a 4x8 roll of chain link fence and cut it down the middle. Use it to get yourself out of the mud or snow. It really works. Store it in a side storage area on your RV.😍😎😍😎😍😎😍😎😍😎😍
2 things, traction boards and a winch mounted front and rear. you probably could have driven out just using traction boards since it was fairly level ground. check Harbor freight winches. a winch is easy to mount and worth every penny. in this case you could have saved major expense and time. if that river was rising fast ........oh well.
The winch sounds like an interesting addition for your RV. The research for that project would be a good video. Also using traction matts for an rv would be interesting also.
I assume you already have kitty litter. In slippery conditions, I would have used that along the tire trail to allow the tires to grip that few footage to a harder surface. Just a respectful thought.
I live in northern Indiana and have traction pads for snow. Cheap investment compared to paying for a tow or waiting for a truck. My are made by WawaAuto but there are similar ones. Used this winter and worked like a champ.
Phew!! 🙄👍 Great lesson to all, especially as campsites in England are just opening up on 12 April during our “Roadmap out of Lockdown 3”. There are lots of newbies to motorhomes allowed out on that date, as foreign holidays are illegal at the moment! You have probably saved a lot of costly mistakes. 🏴🇬🇧🏴
Eric. Right now... check your propane lines and your propane regulator. When I got stuck here in Florida, my class C RV sunk to its belly and 3 tow trucks later I was out. It kinked my propane line out of alignment and damaged my regulator. It would be a good idea to climb under rv right now and inspect any issues before they become an issue.
Sorry about you getting stuck in the end Eric,...but I have to say the video scenes, drone shots and story line in the first half was very first rate. I was all eyes and ears the entire time. Great episode again!
HEY ERIC AND JAX JEFF HERE, YOU GUYS ARE IN MY NECK OF THE WOODS YEAH THE FLOODS HERE WAS REALLY BAD. THERE WAS A MALE WHO HAD DIED ON ONE OF OUR ROADS DUE TO FLOODS HE RAN RIGHT INTO THE WATER OVER THE ROAD AND IT CARRIED HIS CAR AWAY. MY WIFE HAD DROVE MY FORD F150 INTO THE SAME PLACE THANKFULLY MY TRUCK WAS HEAVY ENOUGH TO DISPERSED THE WATER, I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE RAN INTO THE HUGE WATER IT WAS DEEP. I WENT WITH HER WHEN IT GOT DAY LIGHT OUT AND I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT SHE WAS LUCKY.
I live in that area man where you were stuck at to your left is a weather Tower is concrete with steps there's a gravel pull off right beside it just letting you know that away next time if you're in this area it's a safe spot to park a RV and there's a museum on the hill buy the damn part it's pretty cool to check out sometime
Might be a good idea to get a pair of Maxtrax if you have room to store them. Sucks about the flooding around basecamp, hope you can get it straightened out..
Great video as always, mate! Love your stuff. . Apart from the destruction of you GP H9. Maybe for next time... get an SD card for it. (I didn't hear you mention if you had one, or not) It will take up to (I think) a 128GB card (I only have a 64GB one in mine, atm). Everything will be stored on that. If the camera gets damaged, at least you can still get the footage, via a card reader (unless the card's mangled/lost as well). Glad you got out of that mud. Gotta say, I don't think I would even have considered going there. Hind sight is always 20/20 though - eh? 😉 Hope Base Camp is okay too.
Thumbs up as always! Whitehaven KY, is rural-scenic. You're a true nomad - a free spirit with a great sense of humor. You are real mean toward JAX & his "kingly cat breath" (Get a breather freshener for cats & dribble a little of it on Jax's water in his bowl. Yay! AAA - they always come true for us in the CO Rockies. But ours is a simple SUV - totally covered. That's a costly mistake - but you're safe, JAX is safe & Miranda is on solid ground, & ALL is WELL.
Fish breath is the worst. I love how you and Jax talk to each other. Like a old married couple. Kentucky is really nice. I am sorry you had the worst day.
If your heading north from there, go to Ohio, and hit the "Ohio Caverns" they are open All Year, 2210 OH-245 E, West Liberty, OH 43357 I am from Springfield, (but live in Louisiana now) and the Caverns are a must see.
Always carry 2x5m of thick rope. When stuck in mud put the rope through the holes in the rim and around the tire and in the rim and around the tire. Then you have a mud chain rope. It worked for me many many times. As soon as you get out remove the rope. Be sure its not flapping around it can do a lot of damage.
Nice Eric. We all make oops. We all laugh afterwards. Or most of us do. Thanks for doing what you do. You put the road into the eyes that can’t see it for themselves. Been watching your channel for a while , not disappointed a bit
TIP!!! Old school. Appling parking brakes lightly will make just about any kind of rear end differential act like a posi traction unit. Just don't apply them so hard the engine can not over come the brakes.
Eric my friend, I know where you camped, I've been there many times. You more than likely passed within 20 minutes of my house on the way to Morgantown. I know you delay your uploads, but please keep in mind this time of year in KY/TN you can't throw a rock without hitting a copperhead. I wouldn't let Jax off leash because baby snakes are out in abundance. If you smell cucumber and your not eating a salad back away and leave the area. That smell is copperhead musk.
Would those recovery boards have helped? I carry those. Other thought you have a read mounted hitch and would not be too much trouble to install a front mounted hitch. Then hitch mounted winches are not very large to carry. In this case winch would be useless as nothing to winch to behind you. But maybe the boards would help if you had a couple sets. Glad you got out. Don’t feel bad. Everyone does dumb things sometimes. That’s what keeps towing companies in business. Lol.
You got that wish to use your AAA from the last video lol. I told my Brother when you pulled into that spot, "he's gonna get stuck if it rains!" Thanks for the chuckle, glad you got out safe 💕👍
Sandra Wesrley I don’t think I would be parking my RV so near that water and if rains due that bank could get very muddy, in the UK ours never like to park on anything but solid base
New subscriber, looking to go full time travel in a couple of years. Researching for free campsites in lower Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee. Know about freecampsites and the others, but also looking for videos like this too. Do you put gps location in the notes?
I've seen this happen at several large RV rally's, where the designated parking was in a big field of grass. Looked nice until the rains came, then multiple tow trucks spend days towing all the rigs off the muddy grass.
Great vid Eric ! So educational & informative! Even if you didn't mean it. It's gold for us ! So,please, you continue to make the mistakes and you just let us know the whole process to get out of the situation. Thank you so much!😂👍
It might have been a dumb mistake for you. But for everybody watching you just educated everybody thank you. There is a bright side. Stay safe have a great day.

Note on getting stuck:
- You need two large come-a-longs(or manual winch), a long tow strap, a tree protector, and a sand anchor.
TRACGRABBER blocks are incredible. They are rubber blocks that strap to your tire and will get you out of a lot of messes just like the one you were in.

Oh, Eric, I knew, as soon as you mentioned there was rain forecast and you were parked on the river bank...I was like...Eric noooooooo!!
Added tool, one come-a-long with 100 feet of strap to attach around a big tree stump! See what 4 wheelers do!
@@BEASTmodeontheRoad prob cause it was emergency tow, usually costs a lot more
Hell yeah! It's a must for boondockers.

Eric, you and Jax’s are safe. It’s just a lesson learned...you will never forget!
Intro music so appropriate for parts of Kentucky, Eric!! Thx!!!
You'll have fun living in a van down by the river, when you're living in a fan down by the river
Dad, I wish you could just shut your big *YAPPER!!*
Gosh...that is something to remember! Wow..I would not be a happy camper! No parking in the grass...I got it! 👍
Thanks Eric! 🙂
Parking the rv on grass reminds me of My Cousin Vinny when he gets stuck in the mud. Just saying.
Hope Base Camp is okay too.
yeah, the file on the sd card was corrupted because the gopro got smashed before the clip could safely end.
@@nomadicfanatic Ahh okay. Makes sense. What a PITA!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully it will save others from learning the hard and expensive way.
Never thought I'd hear you say "Stay off the Grass"....
I said it before, nobody can touch you're cinematography.
Fish breath is the worst. I love how you and Jax talk to each other. Like a old married couple. Kentucky is really nice. I am sorry you had the worst day.
11:10, when Jax reaches out with his paw to get you to scratch his head, that's so cute! Awwwww
Jax is so cool. I really enjoyed the background music that you chose. I think you had a case of what I call wishful thinking. Glad you and Jax are ok.
If your heading north from there, go to Ohio, and hit the
"Ohio Caverns" they are open All Year,
2210 OH-245 E,
West Liberty, OH 43357
I am from Springfield, (but live in Louisiana now) and the Caverns are a must see.
Excellent camera work. Excellent relationship with Jax. Precious days for you both.
Many thanks!
At your house; looks like you need a dry well. My father-in-law put one in his backyard, worked perfect.
Thanks for sharing and I am so sorry that happened to you getting stuck in the mud. I pray when you get home there's no damage. 🙏🙏🙏
I wish you had tater tot with you. Video of tater trying to pull out Miranda would have been classic. 🤣😂
So glad you and Jax are okay---and your rig is on solid ground again! We've had our experiences with mud too. 🤔
Dang! Thanks for the tip!
Really! Smells like cucumber? Interesting.
@@seanmackey8552 its very close in smell, not exact but reminiscent enough to set off alarms to back out of where you are at lol
Even with all that mess , you could of ended up with a house boat . Lesser of two evils right?
Would those recovery boards have helped? I carry those. Other thought you have a read mounted hitch and would not be too much trouble to install a front mounted hitch. Then hitch mounted winches are not very large to carry. In this case winch would be useless as nothing to winch to behind you. But maybe the boards would help if you had a couple sets. Glad you got out. Don’t feel bad. Everyone does dumb things sometimes. That’s what keeps towing companies in business. Lol.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. Getting stuck in the mud happens to almost everyone at least once. Good lesson.
Try using Jax’s cat liter and see if that gives you some traction to get out next time.
You got that wish to use your AAA from the last video lol. I told my Brother when you pulled into that spot, "he's gonna get stuck if it rains!" Thanks for the chuckle, glad you got out safe 💕👍
We cried a river for you Eric. Great drone shots!
Rules: do not camp right next to water. Camp at least 150 feet away. You been doing this long enough, you should have known that.
Eric, today the comments are just as entertaining as your adventure!
I lost my polydactyl buddy several years ago. It's fun to see your polydactyl buddy!
Have you ever thought about doing a severe weather instructional safety video for Nomads?
Traction mats man like maxtaxs or a set of folding ones.. they work wonders!
