    While I do like 9mm for home defense, I can’t help look back at all of the evidence of over penetration. Yes, it depends on weight and velocity, a lot. However, light grain 556 with a lot of velocity is going to explode almost on impact. No 9mm is going to do that, other than that light stuff made for planes. Of which, I’ve never seen for sale anywhere. When you factor that into the accuracy debate, I 100% want an ar platform. 9mm, out of that longer barrel will penetrate deeper. Varmint 556 loads, getting down to even 40 grains, won’t penetrate nearly as much. I would almost go as far as to say that would be fine even in an apartment complex. I would love to actually test this, though.
    As far as shotguns go, I’m not touching birdshot. However, never underestimate number four buck shot.

      I dont need to test anything i have seen it first hand in operations HR and barricades that I have done. Standard 556 amd green tip will go through 2 interior walls unless it hits a wooden stud.

    • @miletello1
      @miletello1 3 роки тому +5

      @@RealWorldTactical yes but 9mm will do the same and then some. I agree that the lighter 5.56 (55gr or less) will penetrate less than nearly all 9mm slugs. They just tend to break apart sooner. M855 green tip is a different story.

      @@RealWorldTactical you...you know theres OTHER rounds besides green tip right?.....I think you'd be surprised at how few walls a 223 varmint round will go through.

      @@RealWorldTactical you should have clarified what you meant. Ammo selection is important for home defense. 556 in A-Max or the like will tumble and or explode. It dumps the energy before penetrating multiple walls.
      Better than a 9mm pistol.

    Everyone is of a different mind set. I keep a 20 gauge auto loader, tactical style with 2 1/2 inch cut shells with #4 bird shot (lead). The cut shells work great for keeping the shot inside a 6 inch circle and reducing recoil. My wife keeps a 9 mil carbine by her side of the bed. A lot of the choice is experience. My wife is veteran and I am retired LEO and firearm instructor so we are proficient with what is in the ready condition in our house. All our weapons have lights attached to the weapon for night use.

    Single shot and over under shotties with propper ammo selection are very underrated for people with extremely minimal training. Having a simple manual of arms can be a life saver. More ammo is always better but it doesn't do you any good if you don't know how the safety works.

  • @erekalvin

    There isn’t a simple answer for the “what’s the best home defense firearm” question. In most cases, the bad guy breaks in because he either thinks you have something he wants or he knows you have something he wants. In the first scenario, usually once he discovers you have a firearm too, he leaves. In the second scenario, there might be a gun fight because he knows what he is coming for and ready to fight for it. Either way, be ready for whatever.

  • @brandonGCHACHU

    The best one is the one youve got. Tony is the first guy Ive seen who said "there is no right one...the right one is the one that works for you". Thats the truth! Use what you're comfortable with. If you're broke buy a shotgun.. even a hi point 9..theyre cheap and they work. I use a Beretta 92 for home defense personally.

  • @flyinb45

    Needs to be said that any rounds you plan to use in a semi auto shotgun for defense need to be tested to make sure they cycle the gun properly. Birdshot among other lower power loads don't always provide enough energy to fully cycle the action.

  • @paulh6101
    @paulh6101 3 роки тому +11

    One important caveat to remember when recommending birshot for a semi auto is that the "budget" semi auto 18in shotguns do not run reliably. The lack of power from birshot will not reliably cycle the action to chamber round after round. I would recommend a pump shotgun if u are on a budget and practice practice practice with it if u go the shotgun route.

    Well semiautomatic shotguns are finicky with lower velocity rounds, 14 inch shockwave is perfect for home protection because the longer the barrel the more power velocity you get. Kel Tec sub2000 9mm generation2 accepting glock mags is a very good option. But glock17 9mm is a very good choice.

    I use bird shot in my 12 gauge for home defense. The odds I'm using the shotgun is a last resort, but the way my home is laid out my average shot, would be less than 20' so they're screwed unless theyre wearing body armor and from my personal experience, they're still not gonna be shooting back, the impact at 7 yards will blow them backwards if not off thier feet.
    I use HP 223 55 gr, and HP 115 gr 9mm, for my intruder set up.
    Your best defense is an alarm system. If nothing it gives you advanced notice of an intruder, and time to get armed and with training with your family, they know a plan of where to be and what to do if that alarm is going off. And I know where they are so when dad goes DARK, I know where to shoot and not. And where to place myself so bullets are not being fired in thier direction.

    The level of basement dweller experts on this thread, picking apart minutia is amazing. Feels like the same dudes commenting on mma fighting/ techniques who did three months of beginner classes, then Dropped after the trial membership. Y’all need to chill. 😂 bought a pc charger after my wife asked for a home defense gun she could use effectively with training. Now I lean towards it as well cause it’s way faster/ confident target acquisition for me. (I’m not an expert) thanks for the content, good straightforward perspective to the majority of people searching this topic.

    The best home defense gun in the world is the one you have.

    @14:40 "Put a red dot on it, squeeze the trigger and you don't really have to aim. It's pretty much a point and shoot platform." Come on man you are better than that, Shotguns still need to be aimed. Why bother with the red dot if you are not aiming?

      Its an expression brother relax, its as simple as understanding that its a scatter gun, more room for error. Thats all
