Truly he will go down in history as one of the greatest guitarists that walked this earth. Seen him live in 2004, he was far better than many other big name groups. You will be missed Michael, and your music will forever live.
MICHAEL BURKS, another great player that was vastly underrated, and never made the so called best guitarist lists, brilliant soulful singing and playing from a great man!!!!
Absolutely NOT. MB was well appreciated. But he could never stand toe to toe with any of the blues stars of his day. He had zero stage presence and focused too much on the guitar. Amazing voice, but you have to sing TO THE PEOPLE, move around and show some excitement. Command the damn stage. Not saying be a gimmick or dancing bear. I'm saying, put out a powerful engery. Just like in this song, he's the victim... thats largely how all his shows went.
Make my pants want to get up and dance... sad he dropped dead at the Atlanta airport.... plus he was an airplane mechanic. Probably where he got his tone
I have tone, and but I don't have the technical ability. A few local guys brought me in for their recording sessions to dial in their tone. They needed the amps and pedals adjusted between takes so that the multitracking would be distinct, and so that all the songs wouldn't sound the same. It's actually a lot of fun and a nice way to contribute and help people express themselves. I've done the same thing for people's sound checks occasionally. I adjust their amps so it sounds right for the space, and then I leave the rest to the venue staff. What I really enjoy though is playing, even though I'll never do it at a professional level.
You're not the only one. In fact I originally thought this song was composed by Kingfish 😢. Kingfish does this song justice though with an awesome cover
At risk of sounding like I'm posing, I met Michael Burks in Fort Worth, Texas in summer 2001. At a club he was playing. He made me all emotional with his magnificent guitar playing. I sat in awe and wonder for the duration of the show (with my then-wife and some of her cousins). And then I bought a CD off him and managed to walk out of the place without emotional guitar support. That guy had magic.
@@chrisboone1973 thats a great story and share. I have family in the Dallas FW area too, have only visited a few times, but for one visit a very special concert that had the same effect on me, not Blues but Victor Wooten Band about 10 years ago, I think the Words and Tones album tour, and a song that honored those that had passed.... Songs are amazing on CD, but in person, they were filled with emotion and vibe, some very emotional leaving many like you said... I would have loved to see Michael Burks perform this live there too! Music
🎵 WOW seriously....to me this IS the Blues and why I love the Blues this man is a legitimate throwback to the all-time greats and this footage right here is without a doubt some of the realest most soulful Blues I think I've ever come across....such sweet phrasing I'm so sad to hear that he's no longer here with us as this is EXACTLY the kind of player I would look to try to see play out live no question 🎵
A big loss. Had the honor of meeting Michael at a blues festival in PA a couple of years ago. Soft spoken, modest, with a big hears who loved his family dearly. So warm. And an amazing musician. Play on Michael!
I got to see him twice in 05&06,at a small blues club in Salem Oregon, hung out after the show for an hour talking to me and my friend telling us great stories of the road, super nice guy.
JKBluesReport thank you - this is golden. Iron Mike is gone but not forgotten. Truely one of his most soul stirring performances and his supporting cast, outstanding. Love you Iron Mike - May you rest in peace.
I fell in love with this song the first time I saw Kingfish perform it on Luke Cage. So much soul, emotion, and one of the best guitar riffs ever written, IMO. It's a complete shame that Iron Man Burks isn't a household name, and this song is proof that he should be. One of the best blues songs since the golden years of the 3 kings.
Oh man, I am in such amazement here... Fan of the Blues for so long... Just now discovering this man and his passion, thanks to Spotify.... So sad to read he has passed and I never got to see him live... Like so many others commenting... such passion and emotion coming from him and his guitar.... whole band actually... good stuff man! RIP Michael Burks and thank you for the music I will continue to listen to... this song is EPIC
What a beautiful, sad yet sexy fucking song! I came upon this today by hearing king fishes rendition! As a new guitarist but a lifetime musician, I’m glad to discover new legends and their wonderful music!
BUT IT GETS BETTER,JOHN CIOPALLINA NICK GRAVENITES BLUES BAND AKA THUNDER AND LIGHTNING OPENING UP FOR ROY BUCHANAN AT THE KEYSTONE BERKELEY 1982 BEEN TO A LOTTA BAY AREA GIGS BUT THIS ONE ROCKED BALLS LIKE NO OTHER
I never, ever get tired of this song. It is simply fucking magnificent. This was the first time I ever saw Michael and he blew me away. I also filmed this at Schoeppingen, but this version is much better! See my channel for Michael's last ever version, 'The last ever video'. RIP Iron Man.
I was fortunate enough to see him twice, great guy.hung out after the show for an hour talking to me and my friend telling us great stories of the road.
Bless you, Michael ! We will all miss you soufful playing... R.I.P To all his family and friends, far and wide, especially those who will be gathering for the Blues Music Awards 2012.... we have lost another brother that we loved & admired a lot. Go in Peace~
Been a Burks fan since the first time he played Springing the Blues in Jax Beach, Florida over 15 years ago. Amazing shows every time I've seen him! Keep on it Ironman!
I was there too! We had the privilege of meeting him, steady rolling Bob Margolin and PineTop Perkins at the Mojo blues after show. Treasured memories deep seated in Blues!
best version. better sound. crisp clear guitar work. quite like the rising sun version. credit to the animals. but mr burks takes it into heaven. what a guy.i think he will go there too.
people pick on style sound whatever. for me it's how it makes me feel. he had something to me. heard him at a blues festival where I was working and I had to go see what he was doing when I heard him play. R.IP.
MB rules this song!
Miss you papa.
Un des plus grands Bluesmen..une voix un feeling ,rip❤
Many covers of his song (including Kingfish who I love) but his is the best. A great bluesman.
agree 100% great guitar, song writer and vocal
Yes , the best 😎
this guy makes me cry every time I hear this tune...so much love and pain in every note of his guitar...may God bless his soul forevermore...
I agree +1

The best I ever saw live!
He grew up playing a club in Camden Arkansas " The Wheel " he packed the house every weekend ! He was an amazing person !
Indeed... I'm glad I know of him now...
Study Jazz and Classic Guiter for couple of years never get tired about his melody and riff. He is the best for me

A black SRV. Far as I'm concerned.

Such an underrated talent. So sad we lost him. Never got to see him perform. Thanks for sharing!
I can listen to him 24/7 so great rest in peace brother

So much feeling though tone, touch, emotion, and dynamics. A roller coaster of passion!
Tone is so elusive. You can't buy it. You can't steal it. Some players have it. Most players don't. Michael definitely had it.
Burks like hendrix felt the music they jammed on wanna play y ou gotta pay
Can you dig it? I knew that you could.
So true. I’ve been playing for over 40 years. I’m still searching. I hope to find my signature tone one day.

les paul guitar + blues = heaven
Oh shoot, I always thought Kingfish composed this song but this is awesome. Testament to how underrated this man is
So this was the channel and inspiration for Kingfish Ingram. Too much soul in one song RIP Michael Burks. You were a real one.
I feel so ashamed that I've only recently discovered his songs. And so gutted to know today that he has passed away. What a loss :'(
