- This week I present to you a short Drive & Sound test with the recently facelifted Ford Focus ST, now as the all-new Diesel version delivering 185 hp and 400 Nm of torque! When Ford had invited to drive the new Mustang I was really hoping they would bring this new ST with them as I was curious how good Ford's interpretation of the Golf (7) GTD is. Luckily they had one there and this car brings in all the sportiness you expect from a sport hot hatch, even with the Diesel engine. Regarding acceleration it needs to be said that the 0-200 km/h wasn't done in the flat, therefore the time to 200 km/h isn't really comparable. Nevertheless you can definitely feel the 400 Nm of torque and the chassis is well balanced between sport and comfort. A nice move from Ford, they have taken the same exhaust system and in-cab sound generator that is put into the petrol ST (250hp), therefore it sounds quite good! Or Australia, we were only given the petrol version. I own an LV TDCi myself so a couple shapes before, but I’m keen to do an XR5/ST mock-up out of it as close as possible with the turbo diesel engine just to be a little different !!

Was gut ist, ist, dass man nicht wirklich hört, dass das ein Diesel ist. die RÜckleuchten sehen m.M.n. ziemlich scheiße aus, jedoch finde ich die Front echt sehr gelungen. Interieur spricht mir auch zu, vor allem das geile Sitzdesign.Verbrauch ist auch sehr gut für die Leistung:D

+James Stephenson Probably not, maybe if you get a sport filter which doesn't actually mute the intake sound (assuming it doesn't have one) you might get a teeny bit different sound. Or you could change the exhaust. But keep in mind that diesels don't offer a lot in terms of exhaust sound to begin with.
It's simply a quieter engine than the petrol when you're revving it high and has the distinct bassy diesel sound.

+Willi Gärtner Focus ST mit 250 PS geht sehr gut, aber der GTI Performance ist einfach unglaublich effizient abgestimmt und fährt auf der Autobahn mindestens mit, wenn nicht gar weg....leider (aus Sicht des ST) ;)

Meine Frage: Meinst du der Benziner bietet so viel mehr Spass? Oder bekommt man bei dem vernünftigen "Sport-"Diesel genug Spass + weniger Verbrauch...?
Danke:) Also die Antwort ist relativ einfach, der Benziner geht deutlich besser und ist durch das größere Drehzahlband automatisch auch sportlicher. Die Mehrkosten im Monat sind bis 25k km im Jahr noch kalkulierbar, denn der Diesel ist nicht günstig.

How does this compare to the non diesel petrol ST?
+FreshlySnipes Significantly slower, it has 65 less horsepower.
And as a daily driver, it's comparable to the petrol ST even if it's a diesel. It may have that huge torque at low RPM, but the petrol ST is not a slouch either in terms of torque.
Imo the diesel ST needs around 220 horsepower to be comparable to the petrol ST. That would probably require at least a 2.2L engine to keep it driveable (simply slapping a huge turbo on the 2.0 is probably not a great idea because it would generate quite a bit of lag). Maybe sequential turbos to reduce low-end lag but that increases complexity.

I've got a stage 3 with 278 bhp and 580nm, from Pumaspeed, it's expensive though 4.5k.

Got a 2017 ST Diesel and a men do not want more. My girlfriend is happy cause we got a cheap family car (5.2 - 6.5l Diesel/100km - I think you can hit something below 5l/100km) and I got 400Nm. You barely can drive 240+ or so...also the petrol engine takes 10l-12l/100km. Can I life with the point of having the "smaller" ST? Yes, Sir! I barely shift in this car cause he don't give a fuck. Sure it isn't that much fun like a petrol engine powered car, but...jesus it saves a lot of cash. At least for now...keep it up and get a Diesel :D

Wieviel verbraucht der ST Diesel bei schneller und langsamer Fahrweise ?
FredPES Puh, kann ich ehrlich gesagt nicht realistisch beurteilen da ich während der Testphase hauptsächlich sportlich unterwegs war und auch gar nicht auf den Verbrauch geachtet habe. In Anbetracht des Motors der ja auch noch in anderen Fahrzeugen von Ford verbaut ist würde ich allerdings so auf 5,x bei normaler und 6,x bei sportlicher Fahrweise tippen!

FredPES Ja, der Sound ist wirklich gut! Und nageln tut er auch nur sehr dezent, in der Disziplin sogar besser als der Golf 7 GTD.

FredPES Ich würde mir mal die Finanzierungs-Angebote oder auch Leasingkonditionen für Privatleute bei Ford anschauen. Die Nachlässe für den Focus sind wirklich sehr anständig und die Wertstabilität beim ST Diesel auch recht gut. 350 EUR Rate im Monat (ohne Anzahlung, 3/4 Jahre) sollten bei konsequenter Verhandlung realistisch sein.
Nice looking car for a reasonable price. The only point I'm wondering about is the performance. I thought this does 0-100 in like 7-7,5 sec., my F31 320d is a little bit faster than this.

+SuperGeronimo999 Yes, but keep in mind those are official numbers. The reality is very likely different. My fathers 163HP 2.0 TDCI officially goes at 6.1L/100km urban when in reality it's 7.5-8L/100km.
Still not bad at all for a 163HP car. But to get the official figures you have to drive like a granny.

Dude... I'm so fucking pissed that Stealth Grey didn't come as a USDM option for the ST, only the RS. I wound up getting Magnetic Grey instead but I'm still salty. Why, when a car is built by a US manufacturer does the country of origin for that brand not get all the fun shit?

Not enough poke for me, what i dont understand though is how it can be slower then the petrol focus zetec S? The petrol ZS has similar power to the diesel ST yet it is down massively on torque, 240nm vs 400nm. Yet the 0-60mph is better on the ZS and it has a higher top speed. I just think this diesel will be a bit dull to drive.
The ecoboost has 360nm so there are just 40nm Difference

The Focus ZS petrol has 240nm torque, the focus ST petrol has 345nm. The closest thing in the Focus range to this ST diesel is the petrol ZS which is a little bit faster despite being down 160nm on torque.

+john jackson diesel cars arent meant for traffic light gp, their strength is tremendous in gear acceleration from say 1750 rpm onwards allowing for effortless overtakes and better real world performance, a petrol car can rev a lot higher so acceleration off the line to a certain speed is quicker, i dont think 8.1 seconds is too bad either tbh, i have seen diesel st's do a 7.5 though!, as for the top speed, do you really need to be going over 135mph? if so, im sure thats not the cars actual limit, it could be restricted by ford, the old focuses always had an electronic limiter (although it never worked :P)

Im aware of the diesels strengths as i owned a tuned diesel. My 140bhp ibiza now produces 197bhp and 360lb/ft of torque, problems is deploying all that torque to the road in 1st gear, just spins without feathering the throttle. I just think its a bit disappointing when its wearing the st badge is all. Luckily people are already tuning them, a remap and filter takes it to 219bhp with 466nm or torque which is definatly more like it :)

I got a Sport model with the same TDCI 120KW as standard.
After just a remap, it got 146KW and 480NM with the PowerShift gear box is clearly faster than that.

Die Vmax finde ich für einen 185 PS Diesel eher schwach. Ein Golf TDI mit 150 PS läuft ähnlich schnell.
Wenn du ab 120km/h im 6 Gang bis 200km/h beschleunigst bist du deutlich schneller, das Drehmoment von 400NM bringt untenrum an beschelunigung wesentlich mehr als die 185Ps obenrum.
Ich spreche aus Erfahrung ;)
But iv got a 2.0tdci zs that is running 200bhp and 320ft off torque 😁

I've got the GTC version of this, (it's just about to be replaced). Off the mark is a tad slow, but once your moving Thr torque on these deisels are great. Good engines. Shame deisel is all but dead.

Echt ein Witz dieses Auto. Hatte ihn 2 Wochen lang und war fast schon froh, ihn wieder abgeben zu können. Es ist einfach nur traurig, dass einen jeder 120d usw. von der linken Spur drängeln kann. Das Ding sieht aus wie 300 PS und zieht an wie ein Golf. Angesichts des Preises mag das aber auch in Ordnung gehen. Verbrauch lag über 1900km bei errechneten 6,1l/100km, bei zwingend "sportlicher" Fahrweise. Wenn ST, dann als Benziner!

Robert Pricope Didn't consider that, you have a point. Still, 0-100 is faster on the TDCi. That's usually the most attractive figure.

8 3 is slow. But that's his driving/cinditions. My gtc 2l d is stated at 7.9, but I've got 7.4 out of it. I bet this is around 7. 2.
Also given you had a 1.8d you'll know even at 150bhp it would of had about 350nm so it's all about in gear pulling. These 2l deisels, are great. Usally you'll get a chose of turn, the top one is always the nicest to have, (yes I'm a kid), but mien comes in a 110bhp and a 140bhp and 170bhp. Given the torque figures are about the same, really the 110bhp version would be eighth for most, and return a good 55-60mpg in the real world mine returns 35mpg. Probably the 140/150 is the sweet spot of performance and mpg.
