I definitely think BFS is not necessary for 99% of anglers but I do see why people use it. It does have advantages, but most of them are not that important for anglers. Regardless, it is fun XD and I am like you, I like to try new techniques.
yeah, if you search up bfs fishing it talks about how in japan people couldn’t catch bass on larger lures due to over fished to they came up with a bait finesse system (bfs) and so you can cast lighter smaller finesse baits for bass but it is slowly becoming more popular in the us for trout and panfish as a new fun way to fish them and my opinion more effective for me. hope this helps:)
Maybe it’s just me, but coming from sight fishing in saltwater I learned to just huck it and control distance with the rod tip and my left hand on the spool to the point of basically only having a 2-3 inch margin of error, making a baitcaster redundant. I decided I'd quit buying what are essentially throw away reels and get one that would last more or less indefinitely. I'd recommend the Calcutta over basically anything unless you are planning on throwing stuff under 2 grams or so.
you can slow down (feather) casts with spinning reel so your lures don't overcast using fingertip on edge of spool ,or if you are not worried about serious anglers laughing at you, a small spincast reel will let you make fast casts and instant retrieves before lure can sink and snag in shallow water for 1/10th of the cost of BFS
I am much more of a spinning reel guy myself. I agree that the spinning reel is a better system for most situations. Just thought this would be a good video to better explain what a BFS is truly good at.
I purchased my first bait caster and rod 2 years ago, and I love it, perfect for predator fishing. More enjoyable to use for active fishing over open spool reels. Where as I prefer open spool reels for light rigs, and long casting bottom carp fishing. But bait casting is the one for me. Would love to travel to North America and kayak fish for bass and pike.
I know I'm late to the show.... but I just found out about BFS a couple of months ago, that said I have never liked spinning gear, it feels unbalanced and wonky to me. started fishing as a kid with Zebco 33 , so the graduation to a baitcaster was a natural transition for me. my local lakes get a lot of pressure, so switching to finesse is key. the BFS systems just appeals to me, I gave away all my spinning gear, and I have 3 BFS combos, + my six standard combos ... I think I'm covered. and thanks for the videos !!
One of the reasons people choose BFS over UL spinning is simply because the slim profile of a BC reel looks cooler than a spinning reel that sticks out. A lot of young anglers will choose a baitcaster over a spinning reel because it doesn't look "old school." And when it comes to making accurate, stylish casts-check out Japanese BFS Angler Saito-it's always done with a baitcasting setup. I've yet to see a video of someone working a UL spinning setup with the same style and finesse as Saito. As for the "fun" factor, some say you "feel" the fight more with a baitcaster than a spinning reel, because it sits on top and closer to your hand-think of a low-riding hardtail (suspension-less) Harley that sits closer to the tarmac than a higher bike with suspension.
I am impressed with your argument for BFS fishing. I am a spinning combo only person. I must admit that i find it hilarious that the industry is trying to expand their low profile baitcasting equipment outside of bass fishing by packaging a "system". A system notwithstanding, I do believe that it is an excellent avenue for those of you who prefer baitcasting combos to spinning combos. Great video. I just subbed.
Thank you! Yeah BFS is definitely not for everyone. Honestly, I like it but I don't think I need it by any means. Spinning will always be my preference :)
Haha same! 😂 Especially on my exist! I have Casting rods and reels and I rarely use them now. I rarely throw anything above 8lb line. Most of the time im using 6 lb. Line. Using spinning tackle isn't an issue for me, I might pick up a BFS just for creeks.
BFS started in Japan, and where a lot of anglers are really kinda limited to where they fish. Not a lot of lakes, large reservoirs, or farm ponds like the US has. It forced them to go smaller on basically everything. I bought a Dobyns rod and didn't realize that it was basically for the BFS setup, so I had to purchase a new reel for it. It may be great for smaller bodies of water and that will be great. Thanks for the info and fish on👍
Very well said my friend, besides and what I feel is the most important fact about bfs,it affords us ultralight anglers another way/form of enjoying ultralight fishing
Personally I love both. Bfs is fun more power fishing type methods like spinners, hardbaits, micro jigs,Ect. Where spinning gear can be better for dropshot, float rig,and more finesse presentations like 1/32 ounce jigs or anything that’s generally more finesse. But I’ll take either of them any day!
Before I found this video I added a BFS reel to my Christmas list. I found a reel I liked and will match a rod once I have reel in hand. Definitely looking for options to throw finesse baits. The local creek challenge will be big for me. Thanks for the review Ethan. Blessings
Got my first bfs rig last spring just got the zephyr now I have 3 bfs setups I love bfs because it’s super fun and I prefer casting reels over spinning reels I think spinning has more line issues like line twist
Been a BFS bench-sitter for a while now, but got a new Lew's Skip/Pitch reel with the shallow spool...To quote Gomer Pyle, "SHAZAAM, SHAZAAM"! ...I need more BFS gear, Power BFS gear, etc. You get the picture, more BFS vids to guide me through this journey. Just save your KK link to my Amazon List.
Haha heck yeah man! I definitely think it is a cool option for a lot of anglers. As a big ultralight angler, I tend to prefer spinning still, but finesse bass fishing applications are definitely appealing for BFS.
I got the kastking zephyr a couple months ago. It's a fun reel for about $70. They get way more expensive. I'm not expert with bfs but I really like the one i got. Rawr fishing has a bunch of videos on bfs tackle.
Much depends on your budget. Low price favorites of mine are the kastking zephyr, fishband gh100, and the tsurinoya spirit fox. The name brands cost more but they are better built and usually perform better too. The abu garcia alc-bf7 is nice, the daiwa alphas air (not the 2020) is good, and the shimano scorpion bfs (shimano also recently announced a new slx bfs reel). Above that the sky is the limit. Shimano aldebaran bfs and conquest bfs, new 2020 daiwa alphas air, even modified vintage ambassadeur 2500 and 1500 reels are very capable reels.
number 1 reason to get a bfs is cause its fun and much lighter. Although I must say, once I've used BFS, its kinda hard to go back to normal bait caster which is like 5 times heavier...
I just got that reel in your hand.(the Zypher) It just arrived today. I am going to put it on my 7' Shimano Sensilite rod I picked up last September. I can't wait for open water to catch big smallies on it.
Definitely depends on budget and if you’re comfortable buying them from overseas! If you want something domestic and cheap, a Shakespeare microlite ultralight spincasting rod will work! For a higher price, Majorcraft and other JDM rod companies have lots of great options.
@@FishAnything thank you. Also, a couple years ago I met your buddy from college. His name is Brett and lives in Lee's Summit Mo. He said you guys fished together at K State. He's a cool dude. Keep up the great work and videos!
You can use braid but I use mono in a lot of cases because of the lightweight spool. Braid can technically dig into the spool and damage it. Doesn't seem to be a major issue but something to consider
I’ve finally gotten into baitcaters this year and now I’m questioning whether I NEED a BFS next. This vid was helpful, but has your opinion shifted in two years?
I would say the high end needs to be around 5/16oz or MAYBE 3/8oz. Depends on how you will use it though. You can go lower than that if you want UL usage.
I have acquired a 8' Light action casting, kokanee rod, rated to throw 1/8 - 3/4oz and line recommendation of 2-8 lbs. Should I put a BFS reel on this unit? Or, is it not rated 'light enough'?
That is interesting - I have never used anything quite like that! I don't think you really need a BFS reel for that but I definitely would suggest a smaller reel with light components. I wonder if that is intended for drift fishing for salmon/steelhead?
Yeah for sure! BFS is one of those weird obscure techniques that probably isn't necessary but at the same time is effective and fun. I definitely recommend it to light line anglers who have experience with casting reels!
I used to be a spinning reel guy until I bought my first quality casting reel (Daiwa Fuego CT). Now I love love casting reels. I ended up giving away most of my spinning tackle and bought a whole line of Daiwa Tatulas (100, 150, 200). They are so amazing. I kept 2 spinning setup for bait fishing for perches. Other than that, all my lure fishing is with baitcasters. I have yet to find a BFS setup that hasn't given me problems, like lines getting stuck between spool and frame and backlashing when I am trying to get some distance. I know the $200 plus BFS setup from Daiwa and Shimano would solve this problem but I can't justify spending that much for a reel I hardly use. I fish more for big fish in the salt and lake so I use heavier lures most of the time so I rather spend more on bigger tackle.
Great video dude. I’ve been using bfs for a long time and you hit the nail on the head..... it’s all about the fun factor for me . Even on a shite days fishing I get joy out of accurately presenting a sub 3g lure exactly where I want it..... Now where’s my beer ?
What lines and rods are recommended for bfs? I'm just now hearing about it and it seems reminiscent to lrf style of fishing and I am very interested in getting into it. I do get flack from my brothers for wanting to go the "too light to cast route" but I just ignore it and have fun catching plenty when they strugel for a bite.
Haha love it! The rods are a very important part of the system. Generally speaking, you want something either UL or L in power. Any lengths from 4'6 all the way to 7'6. And I would suggest 4-6lb mono or light braid with a leader. Don't overspool the reel or you will have headaches.
Did not know these existed. Gonna have to try one out! I mainly fish for river smallmouth here in NE Oklahoma. I do like my spinning gear but prefer the casting reel.
As someone who has never used a baitcaster, but loves to fish for gills and crappie, is this something you would recommend? I primarily fish on lakes and small ponds
a spinning rod gets the job done with light to heavy lures but a baitcaster in general is more comfortable, faster to prepare your next cast with a simple thumb button to release spool (no need for opening and closing bails with other hand) an is just a more fun way of fishing lures in many ways
You got a Zephyr!! So what do you think??? Very very cool!!! I love mine; you’ll have a blast! And THANKS for the shoutout :) You rock! Keep the BFS vids coming!!! You nailed it in the video as to why I chose BFS; I fish for fun; and to me this represents the most fun for me. Also you nailed it with the accuracy part too; several of my local lakes are littered with laydowns; so I do require so very close quarter accurate casts.
Heck yeah Gary! Can't wait to put it to use as we get a little warmer weather. Hoping to catch some trout on it as well as panfish and bass. Going to be a super fun setup :)
Im a ultralight spinning reel guy.. I use a jdm xtra ultralight Abugarcia real finesse Eradicator rod pair with abu garcia theta 1000 and spool it up with polyester 2.1 lbs line... With plastic line its hard to do it on bfs... Try polyester jdm line .. If you get use to it, you wont use any other lines...Also birds nest on bfs..That will take if not ruin your day if you get 1..
The more I use BFS, the more I actually prefer spinning to be honest. To each his own - I will always have a lot more spinning setups than BFS. But I still do enjoy BFS fishing!
I am an UL spinning guy, never used a baitcaster ever before in my life. Will it be possible for me to switch directly to BFS or I will have to learn to use Baitcaster with some heavy rod, Line and lures?
I switched from fixed spool straight to bfs. 100% doable and I haven’t looked back since. Take a look at a few videos of how to set up a baitcaster/bfs reel and you should be on the right track.
If you are going BFS, I think either honestly works fine. I had the Shimano Sensilite 7' Light Casting Rod and it was a fantastic BFS Ned Rig Rod. I swapped it out for the new Dobyns Sierra 7' L and that will also be perfect. But ML is usually what I recommend for Neds in spinning so that should work fine on BFS too. The one thing to keep in mind is whether it will load up on a cast if you go lighter than a typical Ned. I like the L because it is more versatile for lighter gear too.
I feel like no one is mentioning exactly why I have gotten into bfs. I mean efficiency does explain it in a vague and general manner I guess. I like the fact I get my finger back on the line far quicker/more immediately after the lure hits the water and I find I detect those right as it hits the water strikes much sooner and catch a few more of the fish that bite at that time. I also don’t have to take my finger off the line to reel/thus my finger is on the line more during reeling in slack and i feel more bites/thus hopefully detecting and catching more of this super dooper lightly biting fish that are nearly impossible to feel sometimes. Thus catching a few more fish. Particularly with light ned rigs.
I am waiting for my 1st BFS rod and reel to arrive. The prices for a great reel and rod seem are very low. I also like the casting under brush and trees.
Right of the rip. The opening statement to the video I heard “in a lot of situations, the bfs reel isn’t necessarily better than a spinning reel, but there are a few” I already don’t want it. That’s telling me this is a niche product that no one actually really needs.
efficiency isn't just about maximizing time, but to conserve energy. Blue lining adventures deep into the mountain and find that body of water that you want to fish is already tiring. Weight of reels can also help and BC reels are normally lighter than spinning reels and especially at the cheaper reels. To get a light spinning reel, you must have an expensive reel and a small reel. I hate size 500 reels as they have too much line twists. so i opt for size 1k and a shallow spool. but any how, good job!
I'm starting out as an angler and recently dipped my hands into budget BFS equipment namely with the KastKing Zephyr and the Tsurinoya Dragon rod, loved throwing a ned rig on it. Seeing how it's going to be another year since this video was posted, have your thoughts on the advantages changed?
No major changes in thoughts. I think BFS is a niche in the market which helps certain anglers but I don't think it is necessary for everyone. Fun way to fish regardless!
Japanese and European 0g ultralight rods are exclusively spinning. I'm out here using 0.5g lures, otherwise I would like to try BFS. It's not even about saving time, just the ergonomics of not having to hold the line with your finger to cast, such a small thing, but huge annoyance.
Backlash will always be a problem with bfs just because the wide variables in casting situations. For me anyway. If I were out in the open or on a boat probably not an issue. I still love it though. It's the only setup I've been using lately and having a blast. I just wouldn't say that I'm more efficient with it. At least not yet.
Definitely! Especially for the folks trying to cast super ultralight lures on BFS. BFS is great for the mid-range light tackle but not necessarily for 1/64oz jigs.
You can feather and slow your line down with a spinner as well. I'm pretty satisfied with my accuracy with my spinners and (personally) don't identify with that perceived "deficiency"
Lightly use your cranking hand to cup the spool and let the line gently run across the pad of your hand at the base of your fingers, increasing pressure (or vice versa) as required. Takes some practice but it works
Yeah I do this too. I agree that enough time with a spinning reel can give you solid accuracy as well. I don't think either is a bad option! I just like fishing numerous ways haha
I feel that there is less slack in the line with a baitcaster then a spinning reel when you go to set the hook. Maybe that is because of the higher gear ratio on your average baitcaster you are able to pick up any slack faster. I feel more directly connected to the lure with a baitcaster. That being said I use a spinning reel most the time for bottom fishing lures. Texas, ned, drop shot. Then using a baitcaster for a jig or punching rig for flipping. I have just purchased a bfs setup cause why not fishing light tackle is fun. I can't wait to get a nice fish on some 6lb line lol. The tactical bassin guys are the ones that turned me onto it.
I do get them for sure. But generally a few pulls of the line or a step back will get it out. Rarely get the bad bad ones anymore but it does occasionally happen. But I get similar issues with spinning reels too due to the line twist and loops jumping off the spool. Its not quite as bad with braided line but it still happens occasionally.
Victor this is 100% valid! You definitely waste time with backlashes however I should clarify... --- More efficient for anglers with lots of baitcasting experience and limited backlashes --- Less efficient for amateur baitcasters Long term, with practice, you gain efficiency and will backlash very little.
Line twist, wind knots, and closing and opening the bail gets old. I can fish much faster with BFS and it just feels better in hand. Still use my spinning reels all the time. Love both!! ❤❤
Nothing wrong with either option - just need to use what works best for your style and application. If I was doing a lot of creek fishing with 1/16oz - 1/8oz lures, I would likely use a BFS all the time.
Number one reason is to be able to throw very small lures and baits, where most of the time the smaller fish seem hungrier, they put up a good fight as well, the big fish are a little wiser and a bit finicky, BFS increases the chance that you will catch something besides a cold... 😎
I tend to think that is the case for any ultralight presentation (spinning or BFS). The BFS, with experience, simply helps with accuracy in tight areas.
@@FishAnything working on accuracy for me is tough, that zephyr reel lives to backlash on those tiny baits, I think its time to try some of your gear 😎
I’m being fishing with BFS gears roughly about 4yrs now I love it a lot. But I don’t understand why some people will bad mouth to me about how dumb it is and how it’s a wasting of money and time on BFS. To me it’s just another form of fishing style like fly fishing. For example you can use a spinning setup to do trout fishing or fishing in general yet some people prefer fly fishing setup instead. But I don’t see nobody bad mouth about fly fishing, but as soon as someone mentioned bfs, you’ll be call crazy and waste of time and money. It sad that bfs is some form of taboo in terms of fishing that kinda weird right? I’m just saying, But these days bfs become more and more popular and it’s good to see the genre grow and embrace.
In my opinion the only advantage of a bfs reel is no wind knots. Everything else can be fixed with practice. No wind knots but you can now backlash, easy to skip with a spinning reel, it all evens out.
Great video 👍. I'm a big fan of bfs. Number one reason for me is just fun. I'm not sure why I have so much more fun with a casting reel but I do haha. I have noticed increase in accuracy and that the casts seem more smooth/fluid. It certainly is efficient too. You can usually get the bfs reels in faster gear ratios as well. It can be quite a challenge at times too. If your curious about it don't be afraid to give it a try 👍.
Yeah it is definitely a really "niche" type of fishing. Wouldn't say it is necessary for most anglers. Trout fishing in tight quarters, there is an advantage.
Those who do mainly saltwater, bfs just isn't for you, we do ultralight, micro jigging from shore, ajing, and cast further is the only way we could reach the target, not to mention bfs needs way too much to care on saltwater environment, I guess there's a pros and cons in both so why not buy both right to suite our needs, cheers
@@FishAnything I'm not against it. I like baitcasters, although the description you give of them seems an awful lot like my OOOLLLDD crappie baitcasters
Lol honestly BFS is getting all sorts of hype but it is a pretty niche thing. I think it will help a few occasions but I don't personally need it for a lot of my stuff. Just a preference thing :)
True! But one could argue that a short spinning outfit could do the same thing. To me, the value of BFS is the accuracy it can achieve over a spinning reel by slowing down your spool.
@@FishAnything agreed, I think it's more about efficiency in casting in small spaces or presenting more versatile baits to large fish. But we all know....it's just fun to fish lol
got the zephyr. swapped out the bearings and loaded with 9lb 8 strand microfly braid. Seems like a great set up at the moment. I mainly changed to bfs to try something different but I have to say I thoroughly enjoy it and it has become my light lure 'go to' for fun
There honestly really isn't. For me it's just fun!! When you're going that thin of line diameter and extremely light weight lures, an equivalent spinning set up will always outcast and easily be more manageable in terms of user error and finesse spinning gear is cheaper. BUT when streams are small enough and a long cast isn't required. BFS is so freaking fun! I have 3 BFS reels and always look to use them before my spinning gear.
I've been intrigued by bfs ever since I first heard of it. I'm somewhat afraid of getting spooled if I hook a big fish with the limited line capacity. But I think I'd really enjoy it.
I think, based on your fishing style, you would enjoy it as well! I don't think you will have issues getting spooled but I totally understand the concern if you do happen to find a big fish.
Lose twelve spinners? No I'm going in to get my gear at all times its possible and reasonable lol I actually do cause I don't like spending lots of money

Spinning reels drag is why I keep using a spinning setup. The sound of my drag screaming is what I live for haha
Some BFS reels actually have a clicking drag too! But yeah, you can't beat a spinning reel :)
Haha same! 😂 Especially on my exist! I have Casting rods and reels and I rarely use them now. I rarely throw anything above 8lb line. Most of the time im using 6 lb. Line. Using spinning tackle isn't an issue for me, I might pick up a BFS just for creeks.
How do they cast in a face full of strong wind? Do the backlash?
They can be pretty dang finicky (especially on the ultralight stuff). Not bad when you get up above 1/16oz though.
Darn right! Anything with light line, just go ahead and take my money lol
I love Yards Brewing company. I lived in Philadelphia for 11 years before moving to Indiana. Miss it!! Cheers 🍻
I went there once on a brewery tour and it was soooo cool! Also the beer was fantastic lol
Totally agree!
I just purchased the Zephyr a couple of days ago and will get it Friday. Stoked to try out BFS to see if I like it or not.
Stoked for you! Hope you have fun with it. Be patient - it is weird to start lol
I love my BFS setup. Shimano Alderbaron, on a Shimano Sensilite ultralight rod. I never go fishing without it.
Great setup! So much fun too!
#3 was exact reason I got it! W the zephyr the price was right!!! Can't wait for to you post vid using it.
I am excited to get out and test it soon :D
Before I found this video I added a BFS reel to my Christmas list. I found a reel I liked and will match a rod once I have reel in hand. Definitely looking for options to throw finesse baits. The local creek challenge will be big for me. Thanks for the review Ethan. Blessings
Hope you enjoy it! I personally prefer ultralight spinning reels but BFS can be fun too :)
Got my first bfs rig last spring just got the zephyr now I have 3 bfs setups I love bfs because it’s super fun and I prefer casting reels over spinning reels I think spinning has more line issues like line twist
That is awesome haha you have become a BFS wizard! Glad you enjoy it :)
Whats some brands of bfs i should look for
I got the kastking zephyr a couple months ago. It's a fun reel for about $70. They get way more expensive. I'm not expert with bfs but I really like the one i got. Rawr fishing has a bunch of videos on bfs tackle.
I use KastKing BFS Reels; they have the Zephyr; the Valiant Eagle BFS and also the MegaJaws BFS. Kinda like a good; better; best scenario.
Shimano, Daiwa and shimano 😉
THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING!
number 1 reason to get a bfs is cause its fun and much lighter. Although I must say, once I've used BFS, its kinda hard to go back to normal bait caster which is like 5 times heavier...
There are pros & cons about both! I like experimenting with all gear :)
I just got that reel in your hand.(the Zypher) It just arrived today. I am going to put it on my 7' Shimano Sensilite rod I picked up last September. I can't wait for open water to catch big smallies on it.
That will be a MONEY smallie setup with Ned Rigs and whatnot. Can't wait to hear how you do :)
What is a good rod for using BFS? Size, action, length, brand?
Definitely depends on budget and if you’re comfortable buying them from overseas! If you want something domestic and cheap, a Shakespeare microlite ultralight spincasting rod will work! For a higher price, Majorcraft and other JDM rod companies have lots of great options.
@@FishAnything thank you. Also, a couple years ago I met your buddy from college. His name is Brett and lives in Lee's Summit Mo. He said you guys fished together at K State. He's a cool dude. Keep up the great work and videos!
Call me dumb for asking but Do these reels require a special BFS rod?
Not technically, but you will maximize their performance with a lighter rod for sure. Many companies are starting to offer BFS models.
Hello from Russia, why you select mono and not a braid to bfs?
You can use braid but I use mono in a lot of cases because of the lightweight spool. Braid can technically dig into the spool and damage it. Doesn't seem to be a major issue but something to consider
@@FishAnything thanks, i will take a mono to test.
I’ve finally gotten into baitcaters this year and now I’m questioning whether I NEED a BFS next. This vid was helpful, but has your opinion shifted in two years?
I still feel like spinning is the way to go for my style. BFS is fun but I don't consider it a need.
The Daiwa Alphas Air is a game changer when it comes to BFS reels.
Best UL bfs out of the box!
Man I definitely want one of them! One day I will splurge and pick one up. But for now, I have two plenty capable reels :)
I'm so new to this, but I'm going to spin casting fisherman converting to regular casting. And I love finesse fishing
What rod power (lure weight rating) would go with BFS reel?
I would say the high end needs to be around 5/16oz or MAYBE 3/8oz. Depends on how you will use it though. You can go lower than that if you want UL usage.
@@FishAnything the lowest rod rating I have goes from 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz, would that work for BFS reel?
Maybe a curado bfs, but it would be more finesse fishing than bfs
I have acquired a 8' Light action casting, kokanee rod, rated to throw 1/8 - 3/4oz and line recommendation of 2-8 lbs. Should I put a BFS reel on this unit? Or, is it not rated 'light enough'?
That is interesting - I have never used anything quite like that! I don't think you really need a BFS reel for that but I definitely would suggest a smaller reel with light components. I wonder if that is intended for drift fishing for salmon/steelhead?
can you do a video on bait and tackle storage
I will definitely try to keep this in mind! I can show how I do it in a future video.
@@FishAnything sweeeeet
I have been watching your BFS videos and may try it this summer. You never know if you will like unless you try it.
Yeah for sure! BFS is one of those weird obscure techniques that probably isn't necessary but at the same time is effective and fun. I definitely recommend it to light line anglers who have experience with casting reels!
Hi Bro, can we meet together at ICAST in Orlando, FL from July 11th to 14th? We would like to have a further discussion with you.
Send me an email - I won’t be in attendance of ICAST. MuleFishingSupplies@gmail
Personal preference is a huge part of it! Nothing wrong with using what you like :)
@@FishAnything Yup. Fishing is about having fun and gotta use what you enjoy using. :)
Great video dude. I’ve been using bfs for a long time and you hit the nail on the head..... it’s all about the fun factor for me . Even on a shite days fishing I get joy out of accurately presenting a sub 3g lure exactly where I want it..... Now where’s my beer ?
Love it! Glad you agree on my main points. And as far as your beer goes... I am not sure, but I would check the fridge :D
@@FishAnything on it !
Im hoping before spring qnd they stock trout here in pa i get a bfs
Stocking started February 15.. Trout fishing in approved trout streams is closed until Mentored Youth Day (only one this year), March 27th.
BFS is definitely a great option for us trout anglers! Good luck :)
Can you give us some examples of UL or L casting rods? They're virtually impossible to find...
do you catch a bunch of keepers with the BFS? What I'm seeing everywhere doesn't look like it
Did not know these existed. Gonna have to try one out! I mainly fish for river smallmouth here in NE Oklahoma. I do like my spinning gear but prefer the casting reel.
Definitely give it a shot if you get a chance! I think you would have a ton of fun for river smallies :)
As someone who has never used a baitcaster, but loves to fish for gills and crappie, is this something you would recommend? I primarily fish on lakes and small ponds
Honestly I wouldn’t recommend it for that scenario. I think spinning is just fine!
a spinning rod gets the job done with light to heavy lures but a baitcaster in general is more comfortable, faster to prepare your next cast with a simple thumb button to release spool (no need for opening and closing bails with other hand) an is just a more fun way of fishing lures in many ways
Good points! Definitely room for both reel types. Personal preference ultimately makes the decision :)
I think it COULD be done, however I definitely think you will enjoy BFS more if you are already familiar with heavier baitcasters too.
I switched from fixed spool straight to bfs. 100% doable and I haven’t looked back since. Take a look at a few videos of how to set up a baitcaster/bfs reel and you should be on the right track.
Looking to invest in a Ned rig rod. Do you recommend a light power or medium light?
Also, do you have a contact for us to ask fishing questions?
I bought all ML rods for my BFS reels; I will mostly fish Neds and Micro Finesse Jigs with them.
@@FishAnything thanks for the reply! Love the videos.
I’m going to be using spinning gear.
Yeah I would go with a 6'10 ML fast action. Can't go wrong.
@@FishAnything Do you still have your 7' Shimano Sensilte? How is it with a BFS reel and 1/16 - 1/8 lures?
excellent to the point video.
👊🏽🤠👊🏽 thanks!
I switched to all baitcasters as well. Everyone needs to be like Gary
I am waiting for my 1st BFS rod and reel to arrive. The prices for a great reel and rod seem are very low. I also like the casting under brush and trees.
Right of the rip. The opening statement to the video I heard “in a lot of situations, the bfs reel isn’t necessarily better than a spinning reel, but there are a few”
I already don’t want it. That’s telling me this is a niche product that no one actually really needs.
It’s not a practical thing for most anglers. It is niche and works well for specific anglers but for most, it’s just another example of consumerism.
Nice info bro!🔥Can a bfs reel cast further bro??
I think a spinning can typically cast further (but with less accuracy). Thanks for watching!
efficiency isn't just about maximizing time, but to conserve energy.
Thanks Jimmy! Keep spreading the BFS love - I definitely appreciate your feedback & expertise.
That reel is the bomb! One of if not my favorite. The matching rod is pure joy!
Heck yeah! I think it will be a fun setup. I have a 5' UL Tsurinoya Dragon to pair it with :)
@@FishAnything that’s on my wish list!
I have a kastking
& only backlash once when I hit the bottom of a bridge
User error
You can feather and slow your line down with a spinner as well. I'm pretty satisfied with my accuracy with my spinners and (personally) don't identify with that perceived "deficiency"
Lightly use your cranking hand to cup the spool and let the line gently run across the pad of your hand at the base of your fingers, increasing pressure (or vice versa) as required. Takes some practice but it works
Yeah I do this too. I agree that enough time with a spinning reel can give you solid accuracy as well. I don't think either is a bad option! I just like fishing numerous ways haha
Spoken like a true spinner lol
Man the zephyr is so light and easy to use, really like what Kastking made with it.
Main advantage is you can stop an overcast imo
But, bfs spools require inertia, spinning reel spools don't. Just physics.
Yeah definitely agree with this comment. Bfs gives us control and accuracy.
You can stop an overcast on a spinning
you must do a video on texas rig donkey and trd
100% I will be trying some micro Texas rigs this year
I feel that there is less slack in the line with a baitcaster then a spinning reel when you go to set the hook.
Confidence and what feels right for you is obviously a huge part of it! Great points, David.
what about the time you waste with backlashes everyone get them be honest?
Line twist is worse for me on a spinning reel. I can get out most bad backlash but one bad line twist and I have to cut.
--- More efficient for anglers with lots of baitcasting experience and limited backlashes
--- Less efficient for amateur baitcasters
Long term, with practice, you gain efficiency and will backlash very little.
Bfs biggest advantage is using spinner and spoons. No more worrying about line twist
I can definitely see how this is a big advantage too!
Line twist, wind knots, and closing and opening the bail gets old. I can fish much faster with BFS and it just feels better in hand. Still use my spinning reels all the time. Love both!! ❤❤
Nothing wrong with either option - just need to use what works best for your style and application. If I was doing a lot of creek fishing with 1/16oz - 1/8oz lures, I would likely use a BFS all the time.
ill have to try it one day
It is definitely a fun way to fish light line! You should give it a shot if you get a chance :)
It's basically just like using a spin casting reel that can backlash.
Spincast reels are more similar to spinning reels by how the line comes off the spool. Kinda a push button spinning reel.
Definitely a weird technique. And the backlashes can be brutal lol. But all in all, I think it has a role for certain anglers!
Well said Mark! I definitely wouldn't have gotten into BFS without your help haha so thank you!
@@FishAnything happy to spread the "poison" 🤣🤣🤣

My big thing is gonna be line management
Yeah spinning can definitely have some twist issues so that is a great point.
You are so right in highlighting the differences. I tend to lean to bfs more now after seeing so many of your vids. Before I was mainly spinning.
That is awesome! BFS is super fun - glad you like it as well!
The main advantage seems to me to be extra sales for tackle suppliers!
Other than that maybe just the challenge of learning a different skill.
This is the first I'm hearing of "BFS".
Yes, I live under a rock. So essentially it's just an ultralight baitcaster? Hmm...
Pretty much! They are relatively new to the market but gaining popularity fast.
@@FishAnything I'm not against it. I like baitcasters, although the description you give of them seems an awful lot like my OOOLLLDD crappie baitcasters
I thought BFS was just.for American bass anglers who wanted to try ultralight fishing
Lol honestly BFS is getting all sorts of hype but it is a pretty niche thing. I think it will help a few occasions but I don't personally need it for a lot of my stuff. Just a preference thing :)
@@FishAnything to me it would just be making the hobby even more needlessly expensive and addictive
Bfs is to present lighter lures to the SAME fish you wouldn't have room to maneuver a full size rod and reel to reach
That sounds like a fun setup! I am excited to use mine with 4# monofilament for lots of multispecies fishing :)
Sounds good. Looking forward to watching it in action 🐟
Awesome man 👍👍
Yeaaaaa buddy!
I just got my first bfs straight from China.
Nice! Hope you have fun with it :)
If you have a hour to fish and you backlash bad well you just put down your bfs and pick the old trust spinning reel lol
LOL ok that is 100% true.
Nice video 👊 ....
Thanks Bill!
No I'm going in to get my gear at all times its possible and reasonable lol I actually do cause I don't like spending lots of money
and it helps the environment :)

100% good point. BFS is not more efficient if you are not great at casting with it. I prefer spinning, but BFS is great for certain applications.
The 6.5 Creedmoor of the fishing world....
I think you also enjoy the reel capacity. Use less fishing line save $$$
Fair!
