  • THE WIZARD OF OZ books by L. Frank Baum and Ruth Plumly Thompson were some of the first books I can remember reading that weren't picture books! This is my entire Oz book collection, including old and rare Oz books from authors L. Frank Baum, Ruth Plumly Thompson, John R. Neill, Jack Snow, and Eric Shanower!

    Omg I’ve found my person! Dude!! I have many of those books plus others. I can’t believe how many Oz books keep popping up! Have you read the Dorothy Must Die series by Danielle Paige? I’ve only read the first one but I have the complete series. You just brought me down memory lane with this video ! This is like my entire childhood ! I love Jack Pumpkinhead so much. The books I probably treasure the most are the white editions published in the 50s/60s by Reilly & Lee. Now I want to film my entire collection. You are inspiring me. -Joe

      Yes! Make a video for your channel on your Oz books! I remember checking some of the white editions out of the library when I was a kid! They're so nostalgic!
      I haven't read the Dorothy Must Die books but I have heard of them! I don't have any of them yet though. I'll have to keep my eye out for them when I'm used book hunting!
      Jack Pumpkinhead is one of my faves! I love the design they used for Return to Oz and every Halloween we display the copy of Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz on our shelf in the living room! It's the best.

    This was enjoyable. One book I plan to get at some point of Eric Shanovers is The Giant Garden of Oz where the vegetables in Ems and Henrys garden grown enourmous size, and dorothy goes in search of emerald city for help. So many books of oz out there and you got a great collection, thanks for sharing!!!

      I haven't read that one yet either! It's on my list to read. I really love the graphic novels that he wrote, so I bet I would really like his novels! I love the world of Oz -- can't ever get enough!!

    I’m a huge Oz collector too! Yours is awesome!! I had never heard of the Lavender Bear of Oz so I’m definitely going to look for that :)

      Yay for Oz!! What are some of your favorite books in the series?? And yes, the Lavender Bear of Oz was a pretty good one -- I really enjoyed it and all the callbacks in it! The other one that author team wrote was Masquerade in Oz which is another favorite of mine from the "outside the canon" Oz books!

      @@ShaunStevensonBooks Ozma of Oz will always be my favorite, but I also love The Wizard of Oz, Patchworkk Girl, The Lost Princess, Glinda, Kabumpo, Handy Mandy, Magical Mimics, and Merry Go Round in Oz.
      For out of the famous forty canon I really love Runaway in Oz by John R Neill, and Paradox in Oz and The Living Horse of Oz by Edward Einhorn :) I also really want to try Eric Shanower’s graphic novels as well as his novel The Giant Garden of Oz.
      There is just so much Oz content to dive into and I love all of it!

      Oh! You should DEFINITELY read the Shanower graphic novels! The Forgotten Forest of Oz is still one of my absolute favorite Oz stories of all time! It's such a rich story with really great characters and development and takes place across the Deadly Desert which is always fun!

    Very nice collection! Unfortunately Del Rey didn't publish all of the Ruth Thompson books, so there will never be a "complete" set from Baum to (at least) Thompson from that publisher. John R. Neill didn't write more _Oz_ books because he died in 1943. His last book, _The Runaway in Oz_ , remained unpublished until the 1990s. A similar situation happened with Jack Snow. He also died a couple of years after completing _Who's Who in Oz_ .

    • @ShaunStevensonBooks
      @ShaunStevensonBooks  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm so sad Del Rey didn't finish putting out the rest of RPT's books. That makes sense about Neill's last book! Thanks for sharing that info -- I've followed your channel for a while! Thanks for watching!

      @@ShaunStevensonBooks you're welcome! There's a sort of "mystic" around the _Oz_ books that leads to many facts about the series (especially those later authors after Baum...) to go without much discussion.
      Also, thanks for watching my videos!

    • @ShaunStevensonBooks
      @ShaunStevensonBooks  7 місяців тому

      Yes! There definitely is a bit of mystery around some of the later books! I remember seeing lists of later Oz books like The Forbidden Fountain of Oz and Toto in Oz and wondering: "How can I get THOSE?!" I think I probably annoyed my local librarians asking for super rare, hard to find Oz books, but they always came through by finding some for me to read outside the Famous Forty!

      @@ShaunStevensonBooks the libraries in my hometown had only some of the Baum books. Most librarians I talked to then, didn't know there was a series of _Wizard of Oz_ books (yes, I know...). I remember being frustrated as a kid always having to explain not only to my peers but to adults what L. Frank Baum's books were... and hilariously I'm still doing that as an adult here on UA-cam...so lol.

    Did you ever read that Roger S. Baum book? I've got two by him... One about the Cowardly Lion that just did not "feel" right to me. I wanted to like it so much more than I actually did.
    I've got an unpopular opinion... I like the Ruth Plumly books more than Baum's! It's so cool you have that full set of Del Rey. They're hard to find these days!

    • @ShaunStevensonBooks
      @ShaunStevensonBooks  2 місяці тому +1

      I haven't read it yet! It's in my TBR pile. I've read his book Dorothy of Oz and that one was kind of like how you described it: it didn't "feel" quite right. I've been a little nervous to read this one because I'm not sure if I'm going to like it or not. But I will get to it!
      I think I like Baum's books in different ways than Thompson's. They both have their own unique flavor for sure! I think I love the ways that Thompson expanded the Oz universe by really including so many goings on in other place besides just in Oz. Also some of her characters are just a lot of fun like Kabumpo!

      @@ShaunStevensonBooks About a week ago I got a first edition Kabumpo... one I hadn't read yet! I'm looking forward to it.
      I hadn't read any of the O'Neil or Snow ones... but your review makes me want to go dig them up now.

    • @ShaunStevensonBooks
      @ShaunStevensonBooks  2 місяці тому +1

      Ohhhh! Yay for Kabumpo! That's a really good book!
      You should definitely read the Snow ones! They're better than O'Neil's in my opinion, but O'Neil's have a really great whimsical quality about them that Snow's doesn't. I think Lucky Bucky in Oz is the best of the O'Neil books, and Magical Mimics in Oz is my favorite Snow one!
