Awesome memories. Thanks for the video. I flew as an IFT (one of the few AXs') with VP1, Barber's Point, Hawaii on Super B's, '75-'78. I went through school for B's and C's but VP1 still had the Super B's in 1975 when I got there. I copied this video to show to my Sea Cadet Squadron at drill tomorrow. Thanks a bunch.
Jack Rose My Dad, Reuben Mack, was the Lockheed Field Rep. for VP-8. He loved that bird which also became my siblings and my playground on Saturdays when Dad was home and workaholic that he was, wanted to spend some time at work before taking us out to lunch. We had a blast playing everywhere in, on and around the plane.
Wow! I remember Reuben. I believe we worked together on a few things. I was an AX and 1st Tech on a flight crew. I actually have a picture of him in our Cruise book from our deployment to Sangley Point, PI in 1966. Small world.
I flew as an IFT 1988 to 1992 VP-46 CAC-6 deployed during Desert Storm with ISAR, targeting the bad guys, relaying to SUCAP for the kill shot. I will never forget being a crew member and flying unarmed into a hostile fire zone.
+Paul David C-130 i think 1962 USMC pilot i used to have the article....i think he did about 6 full stops you should be able to google it... the C-130 and P-3 share the same engines except for C-130J; only they are mounted upside down depending on your reference. No the P-3 never did...could she good question serious pucker factor
Very Interesting Heavy B's and up T56-14. I did not pass on the career choice expected 31 years it only lasted for eight years and two months; it was tough watching the Lockheed California Company die. I was in the Navy from 78 to 84 (VP-19 Milpitas Chickens); Worked P-3's for most of my life from 80 to 2015 as a Defense Contractor with time off for hopefully good behavior ( guess it is all about ones perspective) :).
Paul D we did a low altitude approach on a carrier, (the TACCO and the air boss were buddies). The look on the faces of the flight deck crew was priceless!! Have a pic of the carrier’s fan tail from the flight station... PRICELESS!!
P-3 Orion is being replaced by P-8 Poseidon...........OK. P-8 will fly FASTER..........but if I was at sea for hours and hours at a time.......I'd rather have 4 Turbo props than 2 Turbo Fans!
The P-3 Orion has certain counter measures to defend itself from attack, but more likely it would have spotted any threat aircraft before they got into range and either called in air defense aircraft or departed the threat area. But if a Mig-29 or other threat fighter aircraft got to a P-3, it is bad news for the P-3. And probably time for the P-3 aircrew to tighten up their parachute straps and pull the rip cords.
Yes the US Navy still operates the P3C model as the primary maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. Greece should look into the C model as a replacement for the old B models or look into some up-grade packages for their existing B model service aircraft. Fly safe.
I think those who go into the fire should be choosing who they go with, not politicians. When politicians butt into combat crews operations, people die. If you guys are OK with a female on your crew, then that should be how it is. There are many women who are as capable as the men they serve with. But, remember the little girl rescued from a hospital bed in Iraq, she was hiding under the covers when they found her. How many people were put at risk to save her? Then they tried to make her a hero.
As old as this video is the female in a flight jacket is NOT aircrew. Just a intel lacky, that got issued a flight jacket cause she got to fly sometimes while on deployment. At this point in the game female aircrew were only in the VQ squadrons and the reserves...
Roger, just for the record though: I first started working with Women in the Navy in VP-19 starting from Oct. 1980 we were one of two TKI squadron on the west coast testing the concept of Women on preferred sea duty. I must say after Memphis I pretty much had a Bad Attitude. The women in my command easily overcame that we were all working our as... off. I still remember leaving one of our female ground pounders with a bad KW-7 (75 pounds) at the port wing tip while the crew was waiting for me with 3 and 4 turning and burning at 0 dark thirty on a hot launch in the midst of a flap ex out of Moffett back in the day.
Seems ironic that Lockheed, who makes the most advanced aircraft (TR-3B flying triangle, perhaps TR-4's by now) in the world, also makes these "crude but effective" P-3 Orion platforms.
Tom (VP-5, '71-'75), [AW2-SS2/SS3]. Women? Thanks for the Cool Video. Great Job! Did you read about VP-5 (using VP-26 plane) sunk some Libyan Patrol Boat! Hoo-Ya!
8251 Flight Engineer Crew 3 and 11 in VP-45, 1966-69. Still miss flying. Loved every minute of it.

great vid TJ!
the USN is still operating them? we look for a replacement for our old B models :(

Replying to 12 year old comment: the P-3's used by Greece are being upgraded as we speak.
You a prophet or what?
My parents meet each other because of the P3-Orion they were apart of VP-4
The Navy's got contracts for the new P-8 Poseidon. Its based on the Boeing 737, seems good.
Que Pasada , Muy Bueno !! ;)

Sorry, the MAD end the ECM are not passive
Plane nut here....THIS s**t here is AWESOME. Anybody got any rec's for other docu's in the same vein as this one? Thanks in advance.
