Larnell is one of my most recent heroes :) His work on Snarky Puppy's "I Like It Here" is beyond awesome, in a band that IS already beyond awesome. Plus he's so nice and humble. Unbelievable.
Exactly. He seems so down to earth. Apparently he joined Snarky Puppy and learned all the songs on the flight to go record with them. He’s pure talent!
One of many things I love about this video is how Larnell starts out super focused and intense, and once he settles in, maybe around the second chorus or so, it’s off to the races. I’m sure he was human for a few brief moments and forgot those shots later in the song, but I really love that he smiles, shrugs it off and just does what he does. Total professional and such a great example of how dedicating and sacrificing for years to learn and know your craft allows you to step into any scenario and crush it - and look darn cool doing it. I’m sure you’ve seen it by now, but the full jazz fusion video that you enjoyed a clip of is mind-blowing. Some people play drums; some people are drummers - Larnell Lewis is a musician (and probably an alien, too).
Yes, David, I totally enjoyed the show! I didn't know when I requested this if this was going to be too long of a video for you to want to react to but I was hoping that for someone like you of your background it was well worth watching. I'm so happy to see that you did enjoy watching it! I also loved watching you break down Lars' original drum work while Larnell was trying to figure it out and it was so great to see that you appreciated Larnell's personal touches. I wonder if Larnell did those personal touches because he wanted to do them or it they were subconscious decisions of his trying to fill the gaps of the parts he didn't remember. It was great that you not only highlighted them but when on to believe they were better than Lars' original drum work and you explain why you thought that. I had a great time watching this, man! By the way, about that youtube channel Drumeo: That's not Larnell's youtube channel. That channel was started by another Canadian professional drummer, Jared Falk. Drumeo is an educational company that offers online drumming tutorials with many different instructors. They have managed to get some of the top names in the drumming world to do tutorials and masterclasses on their site. Their youtube channel has interviews, sessions and some tutorials and masterclasses with top drummers. They also have some great videos like this where they take some of those top drummers and give them a challenge. You said in the middle of the video of the video that you were going to watch the other Larnell Lewis video that was referenced in the video on your own and to not request it. Did you watch that other Larnell Lewis video since then? If not, I want to request it at some point. I would also like to request some of the other videos that Drumeo has done with other top drummer for you to react to later on. Let me know if you would like that, David! Thanks again for the great video! Loved your reaction!
I would love to see Larnell Lewis and Danny Carey do a drum session together. Just see them riff off of each other or see how they tackle the same song.
This would be so powerful if it happened, the universe could potentially collapse in on itself - but what a way for all of us to go out. It’s worth the risk.
I can kinda understand it. I dont think I will play Enter Sandman myself anytime soon. I dont even remember when was the last time I did. but when I do hear it its fun
Haha it’s ok 😆 even Metallica themselves aren’t the biggest fans of this song, by like the late 90s they were like “yeah we’d be ok never playing this song again!” (Paraphrasing a quote from James from an MTV interview back then 😆😅)
I loved how excited you were watching this, and how you explained what is happening, especailly since I am clueless about music. I’ve watched this video before - it’s amazing watching him figure out how to play the song after one listen
If you want something fun to watch, Drumeo has recorded a video with Domino Santatonio. She is a pop drummer and they asked her to play a Slipknot song
WAIT WHAT!? You had not seen this before?! :D OK, happy to see you see it. x) Next you WILL HAVE TO check out "Snarky Puppy" and their song "Lingus" live: ua-cam.com/video/L_XJ_s5IsQc/v-deo.html (yeah, Larnell Lewis is on the drums)
Commenting this while the ads are playing. Been waiting for this. I love how methodical he is in learning new songs. Looking forward to hearing a comparison on how you approach learning new songs as well.
Awesome reaction! Now I'm curious about what you'd think of Dennis Chambers doing Tool. It's more impressive because Dennis Chambers was listening to a drumless track.
This makes me really think about when Lars says things sound "stock." He really wanted every drum and guitar bit to sound unique, outside of "stock." It's HARD to copy unique riffs, and fills, and beats.
It's interesting to listen to Larnell speak when he's listening! The language of drumming is a bit alien, though. I saw an interview with Neil Peart where he was talking about drumming. I tried, I really did, to keep up, but it was Greek to me. But I do remember the idea of "frameworks", which, as patterns of patterns, makes some sense to me. I still try to make sense of drumming...ha! When will I learn!
Framework is a big deal, especially in studio sessions where we sit down, we get the charts, we get like 5 minutes to read over them, and then we're recording. Musicians who understand what framework is, and how to recognize and utilize it will always have a leg up on those who don't in the world of session work.
Well, damn, great stuff. I’m a big fan of drums and drummers. They might be my favorite instrument. I’ve even downloaded drums-only versions of songs, just the drum tracks alone. From way back in my peer-to-peer file sharing days- no, not proud of it, but was all I had at the time. But, depending on the producer or production, those isolated drum tracks can sound awesome. If they got a good drum sound in the studio. Otherwise, yeah, the way he ended his performance was just sick, a completely killer finish. And, I totally agree with his closing statements, too. My angle is if I like a song, then I listen to it. Simply. I don’t wanna get hung up on genre or style or cool/uncool. Whatever. Jam the tune. To that end my taste has been called very eclectic. It’s just how I am. Most people seem so rigidly stuck in only one lane, in my experience. But maybe that can slowly begin to change with the use of online platforms. I sure hope so. Great passion, by the way, totally dig it. And, when I saw the screenshot. That’s pretty much how I look when we hit a home run. With a sustained high note.
regardless of the guy's skill level, being able to listen to a song ONCE and then play it almost perfect is NUTS. There are not many people around that can do that, even professional musicians.
The reaction to a reaction has been done. Jason Parker is a magician who reacts to magic performances and one of the acts, Shawn Farquhar, did a reaction to Jason's reaction of him. They went back-and-forth 4 or 5 times until the screen was filled with reaction boxes.
I think he's serious when he said that Lewis never really have heard of Enter Sandman. He grew up playing and listening to gospel type music and jazz, which would make sense why he hasn't heard of Enter Sandman.
I'm often impressed watching drummers, but this was extra cool and definitely fun! I think the parts Larnell did differently were the most interesting, even the extra kicks coming out of the second verse. And of course there's the ending. Incidentally, that's one of the things I love about The Warning's cover, too (I think the original's fade-out is lame).
I saw him do another song and He is great. Plus that ending is way better than the original lol. I played jazz and blues. I love prog, play Clarinet and Keys etc. even traditional music around the world etc. like I agree all the way. I go from Classical to Japanese Folk. Lol
Larnell is amazing!! He’s also way more likable than Lars too…😂 dude seems so down to earth. Lars ego would never let Larnell play with Metallica or even react to it.
I'm not much of a musician (8 years of high school band). Doing different genres. This will give you much different styles. Like you said. Gives you many more techniques. Things you can incorporate into your style. That makes you You. Sina drums is a good example. She prefers rock. But playes and has studied many genres. She won't to (Finland?) To take classes in jazz drumming. Now if you see her now. She holds the drum stick in her left hand differently. ( the way they tought when I was in band) would love your option on Sina (Zena) drums. 14yo on first video. Covers, originals and UA-cam artist collaborations.
Check out Chad Smith killing it on the Drumeo channel. He didn`t even listen to the song and just went straight in and did a better job than the original.
Jump on that trend fast, Mr. Heretic! Dragonforce may have you on that! During Covid lockdown, Herman and Sam started a series called “Dragonforce writes a song in 10 minutes”. So far they’ve done Nightwish, Rammstein, Sabaton, Amaranthe, and FFDP. Search for “Nightwish Plastic tree” and have fun with that. The song titles are hilarious as well: Plastic tree. Cyber Sausage World. Angry Guy (the bro riff).. you can tell they were bored! But Plastic Tree is what you want to find.
i'll reiterate that it's entirely possible to live life not having listened to this song, it's never entered my radar until listening to different types of music lol
“Enter Sandman” is one of those gateway songs that even non fans know that a lot of fans are so familiar with, they’re sick of it. Lol I’m one of them. I’ve never been particularly fond of it. I wouldn’t classify it as a metal song, more hard rock. It’s always reminded me of a glam rock song that the Crüe or Bon Jovi would write. That’s not necessarily a knock, because I love Mötley Crüe, but this just doesn’t sound like Metallica. After Justice and puppets, this album was just ok.
How about a non reaction video that is just a primer list of songs/bands to check out to expand our musical tastes? Like a quick Top 10 or whatever. My musical journey is mainly obscure metal (though the bands I like seem to becoming more well known all the time) and classical music, with a heavy helping of 70s and 80s rock. I would love to dig into fusion and jazz but every time I try to the recommendations are more of what's popular for jazz enthusiasts and I get put off. I know for a fact I'm missing out
The trick is to find that 1 gap band that can bridge the gap between Jazz and what you like to listen to normally. If you're into hip hop, I would start with some soul bands like Tower Of Power and then work your way into maybe something like Spyro Gyra. This is the most fun you have had with Sandman that I’ve seen lol
Having a jazz drummer in a rock band is half the reason why I'm into the Smashing Pumpkins 💪 Wish more rock bands had jazz background drummers 😇
One of the reasons The Clash were the best punk band.

domino santorio recently did a slipknot song without the drum track on drumeo, she did a decent job and it was pretty impressive
Nice one!! There's There's similar vid of Dennis Chambers playing Tool's Schism after hearing it once without a drum track. Impressive as hell!
Yup!! His take on the song was very interesting, very different from the original, but very cool!

As I'm watching this, I'm hoping for a Snarky Puppy - Lingus reaction.
I love how enthousiastic you are, I had a big smile all the way through. Plus, you told me what was missing, which is good for a n00b like me ;-)

49:00 - Your rant..
The fact he called what he'd miss is impressive in itself
You should just do a video recommending your favorite jazz songs. I know a moderate amount of it, but I'm sure you know bands I've never heard of.
Maybe a live stream idea.....

Nah, you're right. This was just for fun and I completely forgive the flaws, and his additions were super cool.

Now do "I" by Meshuggah! Comon it's just 1 little metal song! You can easily copy those drums
