    Thanks for this video and having the drivers on your website, it helped me transfer programs to an old cnc machine!

    Anyone else get momentary freezes while copying files every few seconds? I have this card in my Pentium 233Mmx system so maybe this is why. Thanks for the video Phil!

    Not just another USB card, not generic either
    This is based on NEC chip, so you can use it on Apple Mac - and it will just work

    One thing to keep in mind when buying cheap USB controller cards, especially USB 3.0 & 3.1, is more controllers onboard means more devices / transfers at once. You can have a card with 6 ports on the back and 2 headers to plug in 2 more ports in the front but if your card only has one controller, it will effect speeds dramatically. Having more controllers onboard allows more transfers at once and better handling of all devices plugged in. On USB 3.0/3.1, PCI-Express x1 & x4 make a huge difference as well. A $60 x4 card with multiple controls will transfer faster BETWEEN devices plugged into USB, whereas a cheap $12 x1 card, with a single controller, might see good speeds on a single device but see much less between multiple devices (i.e. USB stick to USB HDD). Something to look into when buying.
    Also, PCI-Express 1.1 can't even reach USB 3.0 potential in a x1 slot. If you have PCI-Express 2.0 or 3.0, it's not a problem but if you have the older PCI-Express 1.1 standard, get a x4 card (if you have an x4, x8 or x16 slot as any of these 3 will work on x4 cards). Cheaper is never the best bet when it comes to USB.
    If just having multiple devices plugged in at once (mouse, keyboard, camera, gamepad, etc) is all you're after, then multiple controllers won't effect you that much, unless of course you're using them all at the same time. But if you're after transfer speeds between multiple mass storage devices, it's worth it to research what type of slots your motherboard has, the bus width on the cards you're considering buying and making sure you can get the speed you're after.

    I have a Panasonic CF-50 Toughbook, and it came with USB 2.0 ports built-in, but it didn't come with a hard drive.
    I bought a 256GB Solid State drive from eBay, as well as a new old stock copy of Win98 and Win98SE. Just installed the Win98SE tonight. I haven't yet experimented to see if it recognizes a USB flash drive, but I've done research, and it looks like Win98SE doesn't support USB 2.0 without outside drivers.
    So, I'm a bit confused; do you have a special/specific Win98SE install disc? I haven't tried yet, but I don't think my vintage Win98SE install disc has USB 2.0 drivers on it, as far as I know.
    My first order of business is getting the display drivers updated so I can get 256 colors instead of 16 colors on my display options.
    My CF-50 Toughbook /does/ have a working DVD drive, so I figure I can write files to a blank CD if I can't get USB support first.

      You'll have to have all the 98 drivers in hand. Third party storage driver works well. This will give you USB 1 speeds. For USB 2 speed you'll need a driver from Panasonic, if that exists. So it all depends if that machine has 98 support. USB is definitely easier than mucking around with burning CDs...

    This is exactly what I need for the retro machine I build for someone , it´s an Athlon64 (AM2) machine ( I found a way for Windows 98 to digest 4 GB RAM , it was quite a try & error search for a suitable patch) ... only needing Windows 9x drivers for Geforce 61xx IGP & ATI Radeon HD4600 series & maybe LAN (nForce 430 & Realtek PCI ) ... also even the standard drivers bugging me because they freeze Windows 98

    I have a question; I finally got my Win98SE machine up and running (well, mostly; still waiting for a couple of eBay orders and a Christmas present (FDD)), and I installed the USB storage driver from your site, but every time I plug a thumb drive into one of the USB ports on the motherboard (ASUS P4SD-LA), Windows 98 locks up to the point that I have to hit the reset button. It's been years since I last worked with Win9x. Is there a size limit to what Win98 can handle from USB? For reference, the drive I was trying to use is a 16GB Kingston Datatraveler G3.

    This is what I was looking for. In my current Windows 98 PC it has a 20GB drive I ordered a 80GB Seagate drive online and it works in my other machine but here it appears and dissapears at random from the bios so I have to resort to USB for my games and programs

    Hi! My problem is slightly different. I have a Win98 SE machine, and I need to transfer the files created by the scanner to a modern portable. I also have a two-port USB 1.1 PCI card (412U from Q-TEC) which I never used.
    I tried to install it on the motherboard, but the system couldn't find any driver to install. Is there any chance I can find such a driver anywhere? Thank you.

    Hello Phil. Need a little help. I bought this exact usb card for my retro PC, and every time I install it, Windows doesn't start, I have to boot into safe mode, uninstall the drivers and then the PC starts normally. I have a Socket 370 Pentium III. I think it may be a BIOS configuration issue but I don't know what to change. Thanks!

      Jose Luis Rojas You could try changing PCI slots? The machine I used was also a Pentium III, Slot 1 though with Intel 440BX chipset.

      philscomputerlab I feel ashamed I didn't think of that! What's wrong with me! working like a charm now. Does that mean I have a defective PCI slot? Thanks a lot!

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  9 років тому +2

      Cool it's working now :) No what's happening is that each PCI slot is assigned an IRQ. Sometimes certain combinations simply don't work. This can be changed in the BIOS, there is a setting in the PnP option in the BIOS, but usually it's easier to just swap cards around.

With no harddrive or PSU in it ! Now up and running perfect with two USB 1.1 block for some reason ! Must open up the USB Settings with a Upgrade program maybe ??

    hey Phil, i have a question, i have a few of these usb 2.0 PCI cards, 2 of them are NEC and the others are VIA and ALi, anyways, i have only tried using the 2 nec models, the cards install fine, everything works, but when trying to narrow down a performance issue i was having in a few games i took a look in the system information program and noticed the nec controller installs in more then 1 IRQ and one of them would be sharing IRQ 5 with my pci sound card, and another would share IRQ 10 or 11 with my graphics card, can you tell me if this could cause a performance issue, i normally set my BIOS to plug and play, so windows configures all the IRQ's automatically, also can having a few expansion cards cause performance degradation, like having 1 pci 10/100 nick, 1 pci usb 2.0, 1 pci sound card, and 1 isa sound card.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  6 років тому

      I would remove the card, do some benchmarks, and compare if you gained any speed.

    • @lilkuz2005
      @lilkuz2005 6 років тому

      i will do just that, ill test the usb 2.0 cards i have and compare, ill run 3 runs of each test to see if this can cause performance issue and ill write back and let you know, i cool idea for a video would be to install a bunch of expansion cards to see if it slows a machine down

    If you can get the proper driverd, Windows 98 can do quite well in 2019. Maybe with KernekEx and some different browser. Presumabluly new viruses are not meant for win 98 file system.
    Drivers are a pain in the neck with Windows 98 on mewer machines (like 2005-2010 ones) Especially video drivers. I prefer actusl physical hardware to toying in a VM.
    I have found some useful stuff on MSFN forum and MajorGeeks.
    Windows 98 is so lightweight and lightning fast to boot and shutdown.
    If it weren't for the annoying BSODs and "illegal operations" I would still ise it as my main OS.

    Very misleading to say that this works with Win98. It does not! You must have Win98SE for it to work. Win98 and Win98SE are very different as to the drivers that are bundled with the OS and how the drivers are written. NO ONE makes a Win98 driver for these cards. And the Win98SE driver WILL NOT WORK under Win98.

      Why would you use Windows 98 and not SE? This makes no sense. It's like using unpatched Windows 10...
