1st off, I watched part 1 and 2.@jacobcochrane. I see what you are doing, but I have to critique some of the things you did. I,ve been a carpenter for 30 yrs. The 1st critique is wheres part 3? Never start something without finishing it. My second critique is the base seems to have a lot of unnecessary steps and some material that is being over used. Look, I think it's great you took the time to show people one way this can be done. However, if someone needed to build a cabin from pallets I would think it would be a person without much. Why not show us how to build it with as little as possible and with only hand tools? My opinion and critique of your video is just that. Don't let it stop you from doing what your doing, or make you angry. I am just saying it to say it, and asking to ask. Good luck your future videos, and endeavors on UA-cam.
@@jacobcochrane They're free if you come and get them. I just went out and checked, ive got seven 3'x12' pieces and eleven shorter pieces they're all like 4'-5' long. Totally enough to cover the pallet cabin. I pulled them off a house that got demolished in Sequim years ago and they've been sitting on a pallet ever since. You can't have the pallet though, most of it became soil again.
Im very excited to see the final product! Also I want to build something like this so its fun and inspiring to watch your content! Please keep making vids!!
I’m so glad to hear that! Love the idea that my content inspires folks to try new things and push themselves a bit :))) more videos to come don’t you worry!
Been following you on your other socials for a bit now. Wanted to come show support here and watch the full vids. Didnt skip ads either lol gotta support a fellow WA creator 🫂💙
Magnificent stuff man!! The build and the video! Really meditative to watch you work. Like everyone else, looking forward to Part 2. Step by step, day by day.
Super dope video. I would like a voice over to explain each step and maybe add some of your comments. I look forward to watching more of your content. Your the man.
That’s amazing work you’re doing. Your hardwork and talent will pay off for you. And is very inspiring to see. I wanna purchase some land one day and build on it someday.
I don't know where in Washington you live but if you live near a Dunn Lumber they usually end up stacking mountains of pallets and are happy to have someone take them (used to work at the Greenlake location and once one dude found out that the pallets we had were free he'd come by once a month to clean us out of the 40+ pallets we had).
@@jacobcochrane only thing worth noting is the red pallets aren't free because they're heavy duty and made to be reused by the concrete distributor, besides that though, they're free as a bird. Once found one made out of mahogany and one out of walnut. Was pretty stoked.
Pretty cool! Feel like you might want some sort of siding to keep the insulation from molding or catching a spark. I don't think an awning will be enough to protect it from moisture. Maybe painter's plastic underneath some wood panels? Also, I know port angeles isn't exactly wildfire country, but the cardboard being exposed seems kind of like tempting fate with a bit of a fire hazard
Yeah, it’s not ideal but it’s readily available and free. I was initially going to leave it uninsulated but I have dreams of using it to record music so I wanted to do something atleast. I guess we’ll find out together ;)
This is a great format! I love just watching/listening to you building but if you get the chance to, text on the screen explaining why you’re doing certain things (such as the wiring) would be super helpful and educational for those of us just learning from Dad 😂
Great thought! I might release the same or similar video format at the end with a voice over so people who want a more educational experience can have that?
@@jacobcochraneit could be helpful to do a voice over but some people like the “Working on the House ASMR” to fall asleep to. So, there are a lot of ways that you could run with this idea. Ultimately choose what works the best for you. I feel like just putting a script over the vod would be the easiest but I’m also not an editor… soooo… do what works best for you. An example of what I’m talking about in my original comment would be to go look at Korean camping videos. They set up camp and do all of these things but it’s only ASMR/background music, and just the sounds alone are worth it. Then if your audience is awake and interested in learning thing then they can choose to read what is going on. I’m personally not a person who likes ASMR in the conventional food or makeup genre but I love ASMR that you can learn from and/or fall asleep to. Just an idea and maybe this helps.
@@jacobcochraneit comes down to whether you want to take the time to do an educational voice over for those who are just listening to the vod or an educational script for those watching it. You put the work in at the end of the day so it’s whatever scratches the itch in your brain but also brings in those $$$
I love the content and can’t wait for part 2. Did you plan out how many pallets for the cabin? Or did you just save them up over X months and assume you have enough?
No worries! I did it that way because I wanted it to be pinned between two pieces of wood, rather than exposed on the very bottom where critters could potentially pull it loose over time. Also it just seemed easier to install this way
Howdy! I don’t know if you’ll see this but if you do I wanted to ask why the bottom is elevated and also what is the mesh for? And why is there one layer and then the metal mesh and then the layer with the insulation? Thanks in advance! I’m a new builder and am very curious
Excellent editing! Heres a comment to boost the algorithm hopefully
Appreciate it! Would love to get monetized soon on UA-cam so I can have more project money lol
It worked popped up in my algorithm thank you.
It worked! Saw this vid today!

Feels like I’m catching something before it blows up this is awesome dude
Appreciate it! Only time will tell :)
Awesome stuff man, and smooth edits to boot. Keep on getting after it. I cant wait to see the completed build!
Thanks a ton!
Dude, I like what your doing. I'm in the next county over. I've got a bunch of metal roofing if you want. 3'x12' sheets if you're interested.
No way!! I’ve been wanting metal but was probably going to do something else cause of price. How much would you want for them?

Using the table saw to cut the cardboard was so clever!

Very helpful to watch. Building a pallet house with my son.
That’s some real freakin ingenuity
Great project build
I’d heat used motor oil and coat all foundation wood

Well done! Love the insulation idea.

I would also use that chicken wire to cover the bottom to prevent critters from getting under there. And then add some gravel over the top of it.

Hey don’t be afraid to try! Maybe start with something smaller scale to build your confidence :)
How on earth did I not know about that tool you’re using to get the old nails out until just now?!
At the 3:37 mark. New PR for me in a video with no dialogue or narration
Heyyyyy cool! That’s good to know :)
I link the mesh idea. Are you going to treat the cardboard to keep insects away?
Thanks! Mesh was mostly to deter rats and mice from slipping through the osb. No cardboard treatment this time. We’ll see if that’s a mistake or not…
These short videos are very palatable
Glad you like them!

Question:
With the foundation on dirt, how will you protect against termites?
Why the mesh at the bottom? Keep critters out?
Yessir. Keep rats out of the cardboard, which would be their dream home I’m sure. So far it’s working great!
I know it's only been 5 days but........PART 2!!!!!
Hahaha maybe once this is my actual job I can get stuff done more quickly! For now we all must be patient… sadly
WHAT IS THE TOOL ATTACHMENT YOU USE TO BLOW THE NAILS OUT AND WHERE CAN I GET ONE?
Pneumatic nail puncher! Link in my bio to the one I use 👍🏻
I have a question for you, why did you set up the chicken wire in the center layer? Not criticizing, I just have never done anything like this.
No worries! I did it that way because I wanted it to be pinned between two pieces of wood, rather than exposed on the very bottom where critters could potentially pull it loose over time. Also it just seemed easier to install this way
