    "On 15 April 1941, Galland took off with lobster and champagne to celebrate General Theo Osterkamp's birthday at Le Touquet, France. He made a detour with his wingman towards England, looking for RAF aircraft. Off the cliffs of Dover he spotted a group of Spitfires. Galland attacked and claimed two confirmed and one unconfirmed shot down. The actual result was the destruction of one Spitfire; the other two were damaged in force landings with both pilots wounded. Galland then landed without incident at Le Touquet and presented Osterkamp with his gifts"
    Like a boss...

    Douglas Bader after these pictures were taken Asked if he could sit in Galland's ME-109 which he done..Then asked if Galland would let him do a few circles around the airfield Galland smiled...: Don't feel bad if i say no I would ask the same thing if it was the other way around And i would expect you to say No too !
    After the war Galland presented himself to the English and was taken to England The moment he landed Bader was there to meet him with a box of cigars..

    You should read a magnfiicent book called "A Higher Call" which creates a whole new historical understanding of the Luftwaffe, and echoes the stories of my wife's German teacher, who was a Luftwaffe pilot whose father and brother were sent to Dachau or some other camp. The Luftwaffe hated Goering ("The Fat One"), and new that Hitler was destroying them and losing the war. But if Hitler ordered Galland to dinner, Galland wasn't given a choice.

    Apparently this guy had a device in his cockpit to hold his cigar while flying. What a legend. Germans of that era were truly a different breed if I look a the skinny-jeans wearing hipsters in any German city today.

      he had a cigar lighter and ashtray installed in his 109. Also he had a rifle scope installed through his windscreen in order to see enemy aircraft from a didtance.

    He was close friends with Werner Molders, a fervent nazi. Molders was "struck down by the hand of God." Molders was on his way to the funeral of his commander Ernst Udet, when his plane went down in a storm. Quite an unglamorous ending for such a renowned fighter ace.
    In all, Galland had a great life. Even after he was captured by the Allies, they treated him more like a celebrity than an enemy POW. He looked more like a moviestar than a warrior in my opinion. A touch of Chaplin, even IMO.

      I believe 0:58 and 2:57 show them together. Fun fact: Both were born in Germany's industrial Ruhr district, probably not more than 15 miles apart.

      Also I believe on Gallands right was Colonial Gunther Leutzow, who eventually died when his ME262 crashed while being attacked by P47 Thunderbolts.

    Galland is the best fighter pilot he's the only one German ace who all his kills was against RAF, USA& .. had over100 victorys. None of his kills was easy targets Soviet airplanes like Eric Hartmann or Gunter rall which most their kills was on eastern front. Hartmann had impressive 370 kills but just 20 of them was against RAF &usaf all the airmen of ww2 were brave rest in peace

      hans joachim marseille? he was 158 victories in western front mr Galland called him virtuoso ;)) but anyway Dolfo Galland was only one !!

    • @theodorebennett7938
      @theodorebennett7938 2 роки тому +2

      You are wrong. HJ Marseille was the most successful pilot who flew regularly against the Western allies with 158 air victories. Hartmann had "only" 352, not 370.

      just for backround noise whilst they are doing something else than watching.
