Laura saying "They survived me," gives me hope that some of my seedlings will also survive me.
Imagine if a few people per neighborhood were able to plant a little extra in their gardens to share with others. And even better if people got together to talk about growing in their yards as a community! We could impact food insecurity in an incredible way with very little effort. I’ve been blessed to turn our grass backyard into raised beds and am now sharing our garden bounty with my kids/grandkids and neighbors. In the process, they are being inspired to grow what they can, whether it be herbs, a favorite vegetable, or just beautiful flowers. And the water previously being gobbled up by an admittedly beautiful but hard to keep green grass patch is now providing food and beauty. Thanks as always for the inspiration. I’m growing in the Phoenix area, zone 9b, so water conservation is top of the list for my garden.
People don't want to put in the work. I'm serious. My neighbors love going outside and sitting on their phones. It takes a bit of work and education on what you can do. I mean gardeners can be crazy with the amount of plants they grow, but not everyone needs to be like this. They can just grow some strawberries or something easy like lettuce. Teach the young ones to learn about the environment and plants. It is important. It is for our future! I wish that I had a bigger yard (just a tad larger) but I am one person so there's a lot to manage.
@@Rinsuki Well that’s a great assumption about “people.” You have no idea what your neighbors are growing indoors. I’ve grown lettuce/radishes/tomatoes/etc all indoors as we speak. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
Great encouragement! ☺️ I am thankful more people are gardening since 2020. If water conservation is a concern, check out Core gardening from Migardener channel. Just learned about this and I'm up in the Midwest. Basically burying straw in a trench in garden to maintain water for plants to access. Less watering is always a plus! Good luck with your gardens this year! Keep being positive 👍😎
@@anneh7725 Yes, we use ollas and drip irrigation so we're doing our best. Since we get so little rain and the population here is exploding, it's hard to imagine there will be enough to go around, but God is good. Trying to be like Joseph and store it up where I can (creating the trenches like you said, rainwater harvesting, etc). Praying for a wet summer!
@@vandthebees9249 God is good, He will provide. May the Lord Bless you and your family (and your gardens! 🙂) Psalm 91 is always a helpful read. 👍
I started my first potato plantings ever just about 2 weeks ago. Once I saw the leaves beginning to emerge, I did a happy potato dance that immediately caught my neighbors attention. I quickly shuffled away 🙈🙈🙈
😬😂💃🏽 🥔
Wish we could see your dance!
Hahahhahshah thankfully my neighbors already know I'm crazy ahhsh
Laura, the true gardener! Most of us, soft soil or not would reach for a hand spade, but not Laura! She just digs in with her hands!!! Awsome!!

Agree. My knees were replaced 13 years ago, and are great now for walking and climbing stairs, but I still have trouble kneeling, even tho they reused my own kneecaps. Just hurts too badly. Still gardening but at a much reduced pace. The desire never leaves us.

Planting potatoes takes me back home, there were 12 of us children 6 boys and 6 girls plus Mom and Dad we planted a lot of Kennebec potatoes! We ate fried potatoes usually twice a day! Good eating.
Watching with my daughter over breakfast this morning. She says you should call the
Potatoes “purple princess” instead of “purple majesty”. 😂
I’m with your daughter! 😂
Bahaha ...a guy probably named that one! 🤣😂🤣
Laura I found your channel during the early days of the pandemic when everything seemed so stressful your channel was calm & peaceful. It inspired me to attempt growing garlic that fall which was a total failure, but this year my garlic looks great! I had much more success with tomatoes & strawberries and this year added broccoli, potatoes & peppers. I had to learn more about your huckleberry gold potatoes so that I can try them next year and learned that they have a low glycemic index which makes them healthier for those of us with diabetes. Thank you for all that you do to inspire us to have fun new adventures in the garden.
Love potatoes, Laura!
Did you know Peru (where I was born) has over 4,000 varieties of native potatoes? It’s because of the ideal favorable variety of climates and soil that allows tubers to grow.
Can you imagine planting that many in your property? 😉
I really enjoy these educational comments from others. Thank you Gladys.
@@joemcdaniel6341 - you’re most welcome. Indeed, I also enjoy educational comments as well.
☕️🥔Good morning Laura and all GA friends. What a wonderful layout for the potatoes, and as always, your generosity to others is amazing, Laura. A lot of hard work and a giving heart - we need more of that in the world today. Can’t wait to see the yield on those beautiful plants. Thank you for this…it makes coffee taste so much better when sharing time with all of you 🪴🌷🌸
Laura makes everything look so easy 😁 4 x 60ft rows done n dusted in a blink of an eye😁😁 Love her attitude, let's grow enough for a ton of potatoes so we can give away more💕 You go girl...we need more Laura's in the world today!

My 4 y.o. grandson planted a few potatoes with my father on Saturday--a precious sight and memory. I have fond memories of helping my grandfather dig potatoes in KY. It was like finding buried treasure. Your videos are never boring and always helpful in many ways.
Laura, you are such a hard worker and really inspire me to get out in my garden even though I am a new mom. I love seeing you embrace your passion as a mother. 💪

And thank you for also making topics so easily searchable on UA-cam! ❤️🪴❤️
I do the same.. love this channel so much 🌱💚🌱
You have no idea how useful this video was for me. Thank you!
You are a wonderful teacher, Laura. Your instructions are clear. 🤗
My grandpa always planted Kennebecs. Always one Good Friday, sun, rain or snow!
Your planting so many cool varieties of potatoes! Question for you: How come you don't just plant potatoes from your own that you have in storage? I've done this for many years, all times with great success.
I asked that on yesterday's video when she said some of her potatoes were sprouting. 😀 I have what I have come to think of as perennial potatoes as I leave some in the grow bags I now use and they just keep coming back each year. Where I live now, seed potatoes are crazy expensive so using what you have anyway works great. 😀
I couldn’t help myself - you sold me on the Huckleberry Golds! Went right away to get a bag of some seed potatoes and a potato grow bag for my patio. Can’t wait to teach my picky little kiddos where French fries come from 😂
If you keep adding that organic matter to your soil you’ll never need to till again.
I have been adding composted leaves and grass clippings for the last two years and the improvement in my soil is amazing. I’m in Georgia and our soil is heavy clay.
This would be a great place to try the no till, no dig method since you’ve already been adding organic matter since tilling.
Have you ever grown fingerling potatoes or the little 1 inch ones? Just wondering about your experience and thoughts on those. I watch your videos religiously. This morning is gorgeous so I am watching, with coffee of course, from my hammock in the back hard. Thanks for consistently feeding the content beast for our enjoyment!
I’m curious, did you arrange your plantings in order of maturity? Planting potatoes along with you today!

🤣🤣🤣Priceless…”my plants survived me” Oh, Laura, I think we all feel that way regularly.
A thought would be to dehydrate some of your potatoes in a dryer for later use in casseroles. Just another way to extend your large harvest personally in addition to keeping in the cold room.
Grew up on a farm in the south and planted and ate a lot of new potatoes. Trust me on this, harvest at least some of your red la soda and red norland when they are ping pong ball or golf ball size'ish. Wash and boil immediately after digging, then eat with butter, salt, and some hot sauce like cholula, Tabasco, etc. Fresh, home grown, boiled new potatoes are the best. You can also eat with butter and mint like the British do and that's yummy, too. Just get them small and boil right away.
Good morning. 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Red Lasoda potatoes are incredible! I love them!!
Well done Laura, Thank you for teaching about potatoes.
I know this is a bit unrelated and I know you've mentioned the rings you wear while you work in the garden are fake but I love how you choose pretty and relatively fancy rings. Class and 'romancing the ordinary' are two of the many things I have learned from you. Every day I get to watch your videos, I am challenged and motivated all at once. Thank you for everything you and your family (and Paul😊) are doing and for being such a great light. Many blessings!
Your potting shed is beautiful!
Morning Everyone 🌸💕🌸
We do make purple potatoes mashed for thanksgiving. It’s so colorful . You add more milk , butter etc as they are thicker . Roasted potatoes great too.
I loved watching your video! I’ve never heard of most of those varieties, but kennebecs are a staple in Australia. I noticed that you run your irrigation in one direction only. When I was doing that unit of my horticulture studies we were taught to set it up in a loop to halve the longest distance of tubing from the water source. It increases the pressure on most of the drippers too. Just add a tee piece after the faucet and join the end of the run back to the tee.
Your gusto for planting reminded me of my dad. One year he planted a ton of potatoes. When harvested it was 11 100lb bags of potatoes!! Of course I had to take a bag so all my friends had plenty to eat that year. Your so awesome.
Good evening from Australia 🇦🇺

It's so good to see that you're getting some rain! here in northern Utah we're being allowed to water one day a week for an hour so it's hardly worth the gas to go down to my garden in the valley.
Lots of potatoes 🥔 planted! ✅
Working on my first ever potato planting. Mine will be in pots due to limited space but I am loving the thought of harvesting and eating what I am growing. I just hope it offsets the cost of everything needed to grow. But I am in it to make it work. Thank you Laura. I wish this video had come out a week ago. I really am just you tubing and taking repeat advice as I go. Can’t wait for my flowers to soften all the edges.
The first year is always the roughest because of the expense of everything, but next year when you already have the majority of what you need, it will be so much better ..🥰 Enjoy your garden 😊
Excited and anxious to know how purple potatoes yield turns out
Thank you for giving me hope that one day I’ll be able to plant outside and spring will officially come🤞I live in Saskatchewan, Canada (zone 3b) and we are forecasting ❄️ again today and 60km/h 💨 🥴🥴🥴

Just think, some of us are already whacking mosquitoes while we're weeding. At least you don't have that. :)
I learned to plant potatoes 29 years ago from my husband. I guess we have been lucky. We usually cut them down to one eye if possible (depends on spacing) and have had great luck with plants emerging. Maybe they would grow thicker with more eyes. I will have to try some like that. Kennebec are great potatoes for cooking. I love the Yukon for oven fries.
All of the potatoes 🥔 🤤 I’ve never had a purple one 😮
It’s a good thing that you are so young, with all the working on your knees, mine is hurting just watching this 💪🥰

I grew up on a farm and we grew potatoes. Try being 8 years old and having an order of 1000 50 lb bags every day. Thank god for tractors , trucks and the trusty potato digger
Laura, you Amaze me, to see all the different potatoes...I love it and get so excited when the harvest comes about. So happy to see what produces. Alot like pumpkin & squash varieties. I think I grew the biggest zucchini one year...😅
I am in the process of planning out my 5 acres where I live in the small town of Mariposa California and your videos are so helpful. I planted a small orchard with 17 trees and an enclosed flower garden. We do have a large deer population so I have to plan accordingly. I have to ask, why do you not wear garden gloves???? It cracks me up to see you just dig a zillion holes with your bare hands, you are fearless!
Laura is like a magician making all those potatoes disappearing into the ground so fast. Can’t wait to see what produces! 💛

So fun! I just planted lots and lot of potatoes as well! I have never tried purple potatoes, but I would love too add them to my garden. If you have seen my most recent video then you'd know I already planting a TON of potatoes haha.
Good Morning!
Y’all need to do a potato and tomato taste test with the family. 🥔🍅
My Russett and Golden potatoes are already popping up this year! So excited.
Three other varieties were planted this past weekend.
Loved watching this process and learning about so many different varieties, wow! But it sure made me wonder, what each variety is best suited for cooking/ recipe wise, and what the different tastes are. I know I see Kennebec on restaurant menus, so that makes sense after you explained about them being good for fries 😊
Thanks so much for your content, it has been very grounding for me to start my day with such positive and wholesome information. Love watching you all develop this space!
The daises are such a cute idea! The wall in your church is lovely.
I cannot wait to have a larger garden when I move. I love my little garden for now and all my plants but I cannot help but get excited seeing these bigger plots and beds and want the same!
Great video I know what you mean it is a good feeling to have things in the ground we planted sweet potatoes today and our irish potatoes are in the ground and about 12 inches high with growth ,gardening is a blessing it makes you feel so satisfied.Hugs from NC
I was tickled to see that you are growing Kennebec potatoes this year. I grew up in New England and that was a staple in our garden every year. I know you'll love them!
Great information. My husband has tried to plant potatoes without success before. He happened to be in the room while I was watching this so I started it over for him. He didn't know about letting the cut potato heal or dry over before planting. He was interested in all the varieties. Here in Ontario and Nova Scotia Canada, where we've lived, we have really only seen Yukon Gold and russet from PEI.
❤️
In Toronto, Home Depot (and I would think the other big box stores and garden centres) carry Kennebec, Norland Viking, Purple Majesty; I’ve also seen German Butterball as well but you have to get to them early as they sell out fast!! 🇨🇦
Maybe he could try again, this may be his year to conquer it!!
Thanks for showing us and talking about all the different ways we can grow potatoes!💗 So fun watching you plant up that big field!

Planting my potatoes has been top of my list for too many weeks. Heading outside now to finally get it done! 😊👊 (zone 6b, last frost April 21 🥴)
We used to plant a 50 pound bag of potatoes every year. If the seed potato had 10 eyes, it was cut to 10 pieces. We planted in hills. Do you have problems with Colorado Potato Bugs? Keep doing an awesome job!
OMG, love seeing the tip of # of days on the back of the tag. Time to get my marker back out to write that on my tags for my seedlings before they go in the ground!
I write the harvest date on the marker because I don't always remember exactly when I planted them.

On to the potato planting.🤗 Seeing this video, reminded me that I need to cut and dry my potatoes for planting. I grow mine in containers, though. The desert ground in our yard is full of caliche soil. Not any fun digging in that hard, sticky stuff.
Thank you for all of your helpful tips about the potatoes; I did not know some of them.

Good Morning GA Family and friends 😊 💕 💖 💓 #2 Today, a first for me!🥰🥰🥰
I planted my potatoes just a few that were chitting with my grandson he is 4 and he was very excited about how they grow underground. Can’t wait till we can dump it so he can find them and eat them, and I’m planning on doing a second sowing of them in the beds. Wow you planted a ton but I love that you share the harvest with people and how much you give away. If everyone would just grow a little extra of one crop neighborhoods can swap and would be so rich in healthy food. Just love your hearts ♥️
You can also plant those leftover potatoes in containers or pots
Laura I love the look of the inside of the cut flower shed. Have you considered leaving it natural wood? It would be a beautiful blend of rustic with a glam touches vibe! Whatever you do ,I know it will be good! I grew a variety of blue potato last year and the purple color cooks away for the most part.
I have to say thank u for helping me find something that I love. I love my garden!!! Well it's not a full garden yet. But I just put some potatoes in a grow bag and I can't wait to see what happens. I'm sure I planted them to close to each other. But next year we will be better at it. My strawberry patch is filling in AMAZING!!!. My blueberry bush is starting to show signs of life as well!!
We have grown the purple majesty many times and they are great for baked potatoes. When boiled and mashed they turn an ugly grey colour which might be fun for Halloween or something. They don’t look very pleasing mashed but they are tasty. We save these ones for baking only as they retain their colour and taste excellent. The plants when growing are very healthy and lush compared to the other varieties, they stand out in the garden next to the other potato plants, deep green with some purple on the stocks and dense foliage. They are a great variety to have in your harvest collection. Norland’s are our favourite.
The purple potato can be steam and ate with sugar or sweet condensed milk. it can be as purple jam cooked with a bit of salt sugar and milk.😊
We saw lots of purple potatoes in Peru. I bet they have great recipes for them. Anyone from Peru?
Seeing her dig in that fluffy soil bare hands; calms my anxiety, so much life going in the ground!
Greetings, Laura, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸
I loved watching your prep day.
And now it time to get them in the ground. It will be interesting to see how they vary in harvest time. You sure know what you're doing 👩🌾👍🥔👍
Thank you Laura for covering all the details we need to know about planting potatoes. This is one of the reasons your videos are my favourite and I don’t skip a day without watching your videos. Instead of me watching tow to three different channel’s to gather some information about one gardening subject, I’ll just watch one of yours , and I’ll have all the details and information that I can imagine. Love the natural pine interior of the garden shed.
I love hearing what varieties store the best for you!
Can you also do an experiment with the potatoes? Can you plant some in "bags"? The kind of garden bags for potatoes and other plants? I want to see the comparison of how each grow and yield. I love growing potatoes. Just plant them and forget about them for a while! The purple potatoes are so good roasted with garlic and herbs!!
One can actually buy spud seeds. The variety is larger and there is a huge move right now to preserve the supply before they mutate the rest of our foods. I just bought 2 pds of seeds the cost is cheaper and the diversity is larger. So buy seeds folks.
I was just about to go out and plant potatoes for the first time and decided to sit and watch the latest Garden Answer video and I’m so glad I did. I have a small allotment garden in our local community garden so I think I’ll try planting them a little closer together like how Laura did in the raised bed to save space. Thanks for the video!
