Kinda jealous of your students for having such wise and thoughtful teacher. Thanks to your videos I've begin to think about my space and try to incorporate some minimalist ideas to declutter my living space - especially since I'll have to move in near future.
I had high school english teacher who was very inspiring as he turned us onto works of Henry D. Thoreau. Such literature shaped my outlook; could possibly be my introduction to simplicity concept. Wisdom and thoughtful teachers can make profound difference. My minimalism started in the early 70s ☺️
Hi Aki! During the pandemic, I grew CABBAGES in my room including one on my desk! I think the japanese name is "hakutsai". There is a very easy style of hydroponic gardening called "Kratky". No electricity needed, no messy soil, no need to water, and you can plant things in old plastic, or glass containers. There are many videos online on how to do it, and the wikipedia article for "Kratky Method" is a good start. The easiest thing to grow is lettuce! Not only can you watch them grow, but you can pick the leaves and eat them as the plant grows bigger! I turned my cabbages in to delicious kimchi. So much fun!
Hi Aki, from an English man living in Spain who is fascinated by Japanese culture ....you offer a delightful and inspiring version of it and many thanks for doing so.
7 things in my room that make me happy: 1. My plants (right now I have 14) 2. A photograph of my stepfather who passed away when I was young 3. Many blankets that I have in my bead that are so warm and soft 4. Two carpets that I got from my aunt, they're both second hand and look so pretty 5. Art pieces my great grandpa made 6. My window from where I can see the moon during the night and that open in a funny way 7. Candles
I've finally achieved a minimal room, and it feels great. I used to have a loft bed, three desks, an endless amount of books that I would never read, so many that they began to pile up on the floor. I would hate to go through all of the books and even think about having to let go of them because I really wanted to read them but always spent my free time online rather than reading like I could have been. Several times I sold many of my books, but I would relapse and buy more just as soon. It was a horrible way to live, but I finally got them gone once and for all. I downloaded a few E-Books that would replace physical books that I had, and only kept the books that really sparked joy or that had sentimental value to me. Right now, I have 15, and am hoping to be able to have less and start going to the library more often. These videos have been a big inspiration for me to try and keep decluttering. I took my dresser out of my room, and a futon that I had, now I hang my pants and I keep socks and underwear in a box above my closet, which is much more space efficient than using a dresser. I replaced the futon with a cot, my computer now sits on the floor, I have two chairs in my room that face each other, and one belonged to my grandfather for a long time so it is of sentimental value. I also have an amazon echo that is very good for playing music and podcasts, and a guitar that was also owned by my grandfather. That is almost everything I have in my room now, except for my clothes. I like having my room like this because everything in my room sparks joy and serves a purpose. Keeping a very minimal room like that I feel also allows you to focus most on the things you care about doing. Thank you for inspiring me with these videos to part with the things that I don't need, and for educating people about things like tea ceremony and the kimono. These are easy to understand, and things that I admire about Japanese culture.
That’s really sweet and considerate that you make it a point to let girls live on the second floor. As a girl, I always feel safer in the second floor room than the ground floor one
Hello Aki-san, there are 7 things I enjoy in my appartment : - My 5 furry babies (cats) - Plants (spathiphyllum or Peace Lily, a green plant really easy to take care of and to enjoy 🤗, jasmin, calla, begonia, ficus bonsaï, succulent plant) - Paintings - Paper lamps - wooden furniture - The terrasse where are the raspberries, the tulips, the apple tree, the gladiolus and various cute plants - Wearing my pareo (traditional outfit in Tahiti) I recreated my natural environment in a foreign country 😊🌲🌳🌴🌴🌱🌿🌺🌺🌺🌺 Maururu ia oe (Thank you) for sharing what you enjoy when you are in your room and how to be a happy minimalist person 🤗🌺🌿🌴 Take care!
We have a lot of similarities. I am also a minimalist and in my room of a shared apartment in Dubai, I have a bamboo shelves with a bamboo box underneath it (bamboo makes me happy). I also have plants that even I have placed another bamboo shelves in the common toilet with my plants. Since I am a spa person, I love essential oils and have it with me. The fire-less wood diffuser is new to me. I do light an incense everyday as it makes me calm. A painting of a daisy I bought with has white and beige as main colors. Oh, my MATRESS on the floor! I have asked my landlord to take away the bed and told him I like it Japanese style! I have always loved Japanese inspired interiors. I guess add my two wicker baskets that I chuck in stuff. I also eat while sitting on my mattress beside my wicker basket table.
I do also enjoy many of the things you mentioned, but as a cat owner I had to ban most of them out of my life. Things like tatami mats, paper lamps, plants, candles and essential oils I can no longer have in my home because they would either get ripped up or be eaten by/poison my cats. However, you mentioned with your plants how nice it is to take care of something. I am the same way with my animals, so having them in my life makes up tenfold for not having those other things. Thank you for the video and its relaxing atmosphere.
Hello Aki, I newly found your account and I am so in love with your values. It doesn’t happen often that I meet people who share similar values as me and for that I am thankful that social media exists . Otherwise it sometimes can get lonely . Thank you for sharing a bit of your life. Thank you for putting yourself out there (that’s something I feel uncomfortable with). But your vulnerability is beautiful and inspiring !!! Sending much love from Germany , Dana .
Thank you Aki! I'm so happy because you gave me a chance and believed in me. Take care and make the bicycle's bamboo and wood happy, go to ride and feel some fresh air!
I like to light a candle on a rainy day, because it helps me focus and it takes the gloominess out of a dark rainy day. I want to try several of your habits soon. Thanks for your wonderful videos and your happy, youthful nature. ❤
7 things in my room that make me happy: 1. Work table. My home is where my table is. 2. Bag chair. It was my dream for a long time and now I finally have it! 3. Small green carpet. I have it for more than 10 years now. 4. Orthopedic pillow. Incredibly comfortable. 5. Table lamp. It’s red which is my favourite colour. 6. My diary. It’s a reminder of the big quirky road I am going by. Also keeping it was the first habit I consciously implemented in my life! 7. Giant world map on the wall. Every time I look at it I realise how big our world is and that it has infinite amount of places and possibilities. I’m going though a hard time mentally and this map gives me hope and strength :) Thank you so much for your video it made me appreciate what I have even more ❤️
I'm not a bicyclist, but the comment about how your bike gives you strength knowing all you have accomplished with it was very touching. Also, this video inspired me to get my diffuser out and start using my essential oils again. Thank you!
I have a koshi bell in my room that makes me very happy. It's relaxing and calming and I play it whenever I need to find calm. It has a very unique sound, unlike any other bell.
It's really nice and interesting to see how you have curated your space to create more calmness and tranquility for yourself, both internally and externally. I really enjoyed this exercise of naming 7 things that bring me joy and gratitude for being in my home. Thank you for this practice. I also realize that the items on my list all fulfill the same two criteria: something I use often and something I was gifted by someone I love. E.g the mug my grandma made for me that I drink out of every morning, the pen my friend sent me that I write with every day...
Thanks for the question about what we like. It inspires gratitude. My list: my dogs, being able to my neighbor’s light feels cozy, my comforter, my pillow, my curtains, alarm clock which gradually lights up to simulate the sun, wooden floors.
Hi Aki, i love the way you make minimalist videos that are big on having fun and making your space enjoyable :) it really illustrates how minimalism doesn't have to be an ascetic, joyless existence! your videos are really great, thank you for making them :) all the best from the UK
I also love the plants I have in my room, its always exciting when a new leaf develops and unravels. I collect a lot of soft plants like African violets and felted peperomia, I just feel like they deflect light beautifully and add softness to any space
You can check Deepak Chopra Dosha quizz. By finding the Dosha type you can try out essential oils suitable for your dosha and also colors, music, type of meditation practice and yoga practice. There are also Ayurvedic teas and foods you can try to balance your dosha. I enjoy drinking coffee and tea. A good coffee really relaxes me ... and at night sometime I enjoy drinking tea ... especially in the winter. Lately I've started reading Shunmyo Masuno's book "Don't worry: 48 lessons on achieving calm". That's a nice book ...
Hello. I enjoyed watching your favorites. You have a very peaceful room. I understand the joy of a nice campfire. A few companies make candles with wood wicks to give you that same campfire vibe. They have a few options on Amazon here in the U.S. Hopefully you can find a few on your side of the globe. I think you may like them . Keep making awesome content.
I adore tatami. I only have a wiven grass yoga mat. I have slept on it for years. Even on a brick floor. It is soothing just to touch the woven grass. Flame gazing is known to be purifying. It is necessary for the candles to be in-scented. No scented candles. They are more toxic than people are knowing even a little bit. Thank you.
Hello Aki, I just wanted to thank you for your videos! They have a very calm, cozy and fun energy that inspires me also become a minimalist and enjoy my life!😄
I am happy if my room is clean, tidy, uncluttered. Its simplicity makes me feel peaceful ;my friends think is too boring though😂Thanks for this video.😁👍
I work at the Noguchi Museum in NYC! Our most popular show was focusing on his Akari lamps. There’s something very special about traditional paper lamps
Thank you for a lovely video. What makes me happy are many and very green plants in my living room and I recently rearranged the furniture I have and suddenly everything just felt good, open and relaxing
Your room looks serene and calm, simply beautiful! I started using essential oils and candles since watching your videos, it is wonderfully relaxing! Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us.
Aki, Let's say if one day you use Lemon and the next day you use Lavander.. does the aroma become mixed and distorted considerably if you're using more than one scent?
Hola, excelente las 7 cosas, y lo ordenada y limpia que tienes tu habitaciones. Que peligroso viajar de noche en bicicleta, por la ruta. Muchas gracias por tu video. saludo
Your videos always help me relax while i eat so thankyou . The things that make me happy in my room are: My pet shih tzu yoshi My books And a map of the world i just love looking at it while i work And the balcony in front of my room where i see a lot of birds everyday I have a pretty minimal room so thats about it ☺️
Hi from Madrid! In my house I have a small sacred dance space, there, with selected music, I express myself with my body and movement everything that I have not been able to say. And I free myself.
I like how you have wood on your walls. It looks liberating. I like the wooden furniture in my room because I love the wooden textures they have. I think it looks beautiful and I love nature so much. Thank you Aki for your latest video.
your videos are the best way to motivate myself to look at my own space/room and see what can be removed. thank you for sharing! whenever i lack a bit of inspiration on my decluttering journey, i come back to your channel and watch a few videos and then i'm set to continue my work :)
Your room seems very soothing. I live with my parents and the moment and my room is so crowded with so many pointless things. I plan to get rid of most of it once I get my own apartment so I can have a more relaxing space.
I couldn't agree more about the plants. For a recommendation, you should try neofinetia orchids! If you haven't heard of them, they are native in Japan and have beautiful flowers and folliage. They are miniature and easy to maintain, so I think they would go well with your other plants.
plants are great! I just started experimenting planting all kind of seeds that come with my food. so I got a sprouting Avocado, too, and a Mango (which has a geometry of 3... very unusual for me as a European), I planted some peperoni, waiting for a citron ... when onions get growing, I put them in a glass, add some water at the bottom, so the green stalk grows and I have some green stuff for food.
I love your plant choices. You might enjoy a snake plant, they are easy to care for. need minimal light, watering only a couple times a month and one of the best for purifying the air🌱✌🏼💚🕉
I like this video. It's lovely 🪴 The 7 things I like in my room are My bed My windows My old books My antique compasses My weighted blanket My essential oils, candles and most importantly.. Myself 🍑🍓🫖🦋🦓🪐🌊⛰️🍁🥂🌷🌦️🌏
I enjoyed this video! 🤍 Things in my room which make me happy: books I’m currently reading, a second hand dress (beautiful & comfy!), my new vegan & recycled trainers 👟, my wooden furniture, my incense sticks (2 different scents), a swatch I knit… Love from France (:
I really like all the different things you can do with a little bit of tatami just by moving it around. Very creative! Gives me ideas! Thank you. I always enjoy your videos. I am inspired to live more simply and more creatively. Thank you.
These are wonderful suggestions, thank you. One note of caution, however, is that burning candles is known to create poor air quality through emitting fine particulate matter and other contaminants, especially in poorly ventilated settings. There are safer alternatives candles that do not involve burning/combustion.
@@bethmccall9254 Same for me when I discovered the poor air quality thing and I risked that our room went on fire when I was with my ex boyfriend because there was a recharging cable near the candle that went on fire 🙈 luckily I saw it on time! And I used to love some perfumed expensive candles 😢 now I can't understand if they are able to create candles that don't make the air become bad...
Love the wood interior. However, in the country I live in, the weather is very humid and wooden things tend to grow mouldy. Removing mould is another problem
I will make a small dish from the white pine that my brother, who has passed away, planted over 30 years ago. It will have the scent of pine at first, and then is a soft wood, so I think it might be good for essential oils. Thank you, as always, for a thoughtful video 🫶
I don't have a bamboo bicycle (yet, maybe in the future), but my bicycle is also the most indispensable thing in my room! And it makes me really happy! ; ) Keep it up! Best wishes all the way from Montpellier (France).
I am from the U.S. and I have a Tatami mat and futon and I love them. The other things in my room that make me happy are my cat, my books, and my plants (English Ivy, snake plant and zz plant). I enjoy your videos. They are so relaxing.
I envy your minimalist approach to living. I just seem to need “stuff” around me. Not too much, but things like art, mementos, and soft things like pillows. Anyway, I enjoy seeing your minimalist lifestyle and reflecting on what things I have around me that I could live better without.
I like everything you have in your room, except the candle. Reason: fire hazard. In my room, I have pictures of my meditation master in his meditative state. Looking at his pictures always give me peace, hope and light.

I couldn't agree more about the plants. For a recommendation, you should try neofinetia orchids! If you haven't heard of them, they are native in Japan and have beautiful flowers and folliage. They are miniature and easy to maintain, so I think they would go well with your other plants.
You and your videos make me happy.😊
Thank you for sharing your life. So inspiring.
plants are great!
😄
すばらしいビデオ🙂👏 Bravissimo 🥰 ♥️🌈🇯🇵
I love your plant choices. You might enjoy a snake plant, they are easy to care for. need minimal light, watering only a couple times a month and one of the best for purifying the air🌱✌🏼💚🕉
Thank you!!
Querido tus vídeos cada vez más interesantes y útiles, son para mí de mucha inspiración. Gracias🙏💕
Hello Aki! Greetings from the UK and Poland. You are the first UA-cam account I actually adore. Thank you for brining your genuiness here.
Another great video, very relaxing and pleasant. Thank you⚜️
I like this video. It's lovely 🪴
The 7 things I like in my room are
My bed
My windows
My old books
My antique compasses
My weighted blanket
My essential oils, candles
and most importantly..
Myself 🍑🍓🫖🦋🦓🪐🌊⛰️🍁🥂🌷🌦️🌏
Peppermint plants in terra cotta for cooking with green powder tea and spices. Great Art your Bike. Take Care.
Citrus plants grow easily in the pot. Try nagami kumquat, easy!
Just ur video..makes me happy😊
I recently came across your content and have been addicted to it ever since! it makes me feel so relaxed and really makes my day better!
I enjoyed this video! 🤍
Things in my room which make me happy: books I’m currently reading, a second hand dress (beautiful & comfy!), my new vegan & recycled trainers 👟, my wooden furniture, my incense sticks (2 different scents), a swatch I knit…
Love from France (:
It sounds nice! I also want to use incense sticks;-D
I really like all the different things you can do with a little bit of tatami just by moving it around. Very creative! Gives me ideas! Thank you. I always enjoy your videos. I am inspired to live more simply and more creatively. Thank you.
Thank you so much!!
These are wonderful suggestions, thank you. One note of caution, however, is that burning candles is known to create poor air quality through emitting fine particulate matter and other contaminants, especially in poorly ventilated settings. There are safer alternatives candles that do not involve burning/combustion.
Yes I sadly decided to no longer use candles for this reason. (Plus the fire hazard.)
Hi,I am a retired secondary school teacher..I admire your vlog..very helpful for us.
I am also an aspiring minimalist and I love your maple tree! I am inspired and will try to also find one for my room. :) Thank you for sharing!
I will make a small dish from the white pine that my brother, who has passed away, planted over 30 years ago. It will have the scent of pine at first, and then is a soft wood, so I think it might be good for essential oils. Thank you, as always, for a thoughtful video 🫶
Me encanta tu contenido, es tan relajante e informativo! ❤️🍃
I don't have a bamboo bicycle (yet, maybe in the future), but my bicycle is also the most indispensable thing in my room! And it makes me really happy! ; )
Keep it up!
That's great!!
I always enjoy your videos and your awesome Japanese aesthetic
Greetings from Los Angeles 👌🏻
Im watching this video to relax this morning 🌄 Love from Scotland ❤
Your home looks nice and tidy!
Absolutely love this! Thank you!
0:27: !!! 1:15 Cedar trees ... lovely! 2:06 training for that ...
I like that TADAIMA for essential oils. I think I'm going to carve one myself today and try it out
What is that thing you put few drops of essential oil on?
I love your room, but the candle made me nervous. Perhaps a battery votive candle would be safer?
🙏☺️I really enjoy your videos and it's truly inspiring 😊thank you for sharing
