I love how this video humanizes everyone. It doesn’t matter how big of a star you are, deep down we are all humans with the spirit to do the right thing. Thank you to Tom for coming on and sharing the experience.
I remember Bob Geldof relating that feeling after the Band Aid project. How, once they were all in the group, it was just another group of people, standing together in a room. He noted that they each had their own stylized look, or whatever at the time, but together, they all came off looking like anyone hanging out at a pub. It really has a way of balancing things out. ❤
“When you’re prepared, you don’t have to go to war” is the gist of every music prep gig. It is also said, “don’t give the players a reason to raise their hands.”
Love this, but the only thing I'm confused about is his description at 35:22 of Cyndi Lauper nailing it on the "first" try, and her listening to the playback from Quincy before being convinced that her "first" take was good enough. Thing is, I've actually seen the video of Cyndi recording her solo bit from the We Are The World sessions here on UA-cam. It's amazing to watch, but she does, in fact, redo her part numerous times until she, Huey Lewis and Kim Carnes all finally nail the prefect cut that we hear on the final mix, which was all captured on video. For those curious, here is this fascinating clip of how "the sausage is made" with Cindy's part: ua-cam.com/video/HpReqNFVL-0/v-deo.html So there is definitely something off about Tom's recollection of Cyndi cutting her solo that night. Maybe he was referring to her final (perfect) take and her still wanting to do it again with Heuy and Kim? If so, that wasn't part of he above clip, but even in this video you can see everyone clapping and saying they nailed it on that final take, after a fairly lengthly number of takes.
Anthony , please say hi to Tom from me. Back in the days when I was an 8 year old boy in Copenhagen Denmark and listened to Michael Jackson the first time in 1982 I never then understood how much music would influence my life till today, now I finally found out that both you and Tom was the people behind the soundtrack too the music and sound off my youth so I thank you. Much love from Me, Cas Copenhagen supports
I am 53 Yld and remember as clear as day when We are the world song hit the radio station back then and the video hit the media. I was a young teenager at the time and seeing all those super stars together was a phenomena like no other to this day. As a grown man now, this video brought back so many memories and to be honest, listening to Tom talking about all that took place those 2 days, in my mind I could see it all unfolding. His profound knowledge and wisdom is invaluable. Seeing him express all his emotions about that once in a lifetime experience he lived must have been the Holy grail here on Earth. This man made me go soft at the end of his interview. I am tough as stone when it comes to emotions. I couldn't contain my tears. I felt as if he was saying goodbye. Tom if you ever see this comment (I hope so) I want to thank you for all you've done and your dedication not just for the music industry but for humanity as a whole. My deepest and sincerest admiration and respect goes to you. May your coming years continue to be full of love and joy. You've earned your way through heaven's gates... And for you Anthony, I can't thank you enough for sharing this video. You both are a legend. God bless you both!!!

Thank you Johnny, I read all of these commons and yours stands out to me. Thank you for the depth of your writing here.
I was ignorant of this gentleman before these videos but what an awesome guy with amazing stories… and… wow man, i hope i’m as vibrant and with-it when i’m 80, he has the mind of a 35 year old. God speed. Thanks
"You can't separate love from music." I love that thought. Einstein said there is no matter, only energy. Matter is just our perception of some forms of energy. Music is vibration, a form of perceived energy, and so is love, a form of perceived energy. Both forms of energy, music and love, are intertwined and inseparable.
Great conversation. The Diana-Daryl story is funny because they'd already worked together on Swept Away, which Daryl wrote and produced for Diana. Maybe Diana asked for his autograph as a conscious move to break the ice for everyone.
I got one important lesson out of all this that i have always thought about when it comes to "professional recordings" of others and the answer didn't surprise me. There is no University Professor that has figured out the perfect notes for all the singers to sing. Like "this harmony is for you Michael and this is for you Diana", etc. That only works in choirs. I imagine it would have been funny tho if notes were written down for 40 singers key preferences and you guys would sit and pick out the harmonies and try to find the perfect harmony for each singer! Thanks for the video enjoyed this one as much as the other one, and once again Tom did a great job on the Cindy vocal imitation, nailed it.
So much to process in this great conversation. I really enjoy Anthony being the catalyst for these chats and remembrances. He knows how to listen, but also follows his intuition; when to step in and help clarify or correct a detail, and keep things real. Of course, reading Tom's name over the yeas, and now I am an instant fan after hearing him speak. His honest, emotional connection to his work is laid bare for us to appreciate. He has been able to take in so much detail, and we are better for hearing him share those memories with us. Quincy has been known to be brilliant at "casting" members of a team, and delegating to people who elevate the entire project. "We Are The World" is a perfect example, as we have seen and heard from various people involved, sharing their piece of the puzzle. The story about Diana breaking the tension is a fantastic bit of detail in the evening's progression. With that simple gesture, she allowed EVERYONE there to be a human, surrounded by so many great musical artists. I don't care who you are, the emotion must have been overwhelming for everyone, with rare exceptions. She showed it was OK to let that humanity out. ❤ These one-on-one chats are great, but having many people share informed memories is important, to keep as close to accurate detail as possible. Tom, understandably, misremembers "Bruce" (Swedien) as being there for "We Are The World", but it was actually Humberto Gatica that recorded it. After recently hearing Allen Sides talk about this recording, it would be really interesting to hear more about this project on this channel, from Anthony's friends and colleagues.
This guy not only is interesting because of his insights into music but has so much knowledge to share about life and living it. If I was out drinking at a pub this is the kind of person I would gravitate towards .
Listening to you guys is almost like medication. You're exceptionally pleasent human beings. The story about Diana Ross unexpectedly changed behavior so far is one of the most touching ones I heard this year. Even in the song's video it's obvious she enjoyed it, though no one assumed her feeling like heaven within the circle. Now we know it. Since Bily Joel also sang sang fabulous (as always) on We Are The World, I'd like to tell that his London-born brother Alexander grew up in my country's capitol Vienna. Around the millenium he had an engagement as a bandmaster at Klagenfurt's city theathre. That's the time I saw him taking the route from/to by bike. Until 2017 he worked as a conductor and musical director throughout the German-speaking area and northern Europe... but what he's currently doing? No idea...
These behind the scenes stories are so WONDERFUL. Pure heaven to hear all of it. It's like a free concert ticket to what actually happened in the room that night, and I thank both of these gentlemen for capturing it on video in such exquisite detail. This, to me, is like hearing detailed first hand accounts from the people who were on the Titanic as it was going down and survived. The information is priceless, captivating, and tremendously illuminating to those who've only ever had access to the final products (song and video) after all the planning and that very special magical night of recording. THANK YOU Tom and Anthony!
So glad you are cataloging the stories behind the music in ways that could only be described by the members of the team that made it possible ❤❤❤ This is critical music industry mythology!
"Talk to each other" - This is something that should be emphasized in education throughout the world! We need to listen to those words»! The next generation and those behind there, should take note of this! It’s love, listening and giving kindness through dialog that will bring forth the best art - every time!
The signature tune of the 80s with a message that stands in contrast to the world we have today. More relevant than ever I would say and it has struck me what a positive force artists have together when I think back on this...Interesting to hear the story behind everything. Thanks for sharing!
I only realised Tom's involvement a couple of days ago when I coincidentally watched the behind the scenes video of the song! Now I get to hear the whole story from him - amazing! Thanks so much Anthony (and Tom!).
We ARE the World! Great story and an important lesson about planning out something important. " ...When you're prepared, you don't have to go to war." 💯 Advice for Life.
Hear me out I’m just a child when this song came out back in myanmar we can’t afford to own record player so have to go to my aunt place to listen it. Now I’m 29 in Australia now music is the only reason why I’m alive it saved my soul. I been producing Electronic music for 3 years now end up here to explore some synths knowledge but boom I was so surprised that you guys are the one who brings genius ideas into reality and I’m just glad that I had to know you guys before I die thanks to internet and channel this isn’t just interview video this is totally a documentary for me by seeing these legends.
We are the World holds a special place in my heart thank you so much for this conversation. Hearing these stories makes me love the song and the artists involved even more. Smiles and tears from me through the whole conversation. Please do more interviews like this one.
Anthony ! Thank you so much for having Tom telling this story so well, what a lovely, adorable man he is. Fascinating to see how he and Quincy were focused on allowing everyone's angels into the studio and let the magic of love happen.
Tom told it so well, that when he first told the bit of Diana going up for an autograph, I felt the emotion and went AWWW..... how incredibly endearing..... Thank you so much for having Tom and sharing this wonderful talk with him!

He is a great master to learn from both of you. and the people you chose to interview. There very interesting thank you for sharing. God bless you both.🙏❤️🌹x
To be honest I never really liked the song but hearing this story really hit me on so many levels. I have a dream about gathering as many artists, musicians and minds who are on the spectrum and it is a daunting task to make this divergence festival sensitive to the sensitivity needs of everyone as well as overstimulation areas for people who want to push themselves in a way they can control. From hearing this story it seems like you were doing this before autism was known or talked about. I’d love to hear about any stories about autism and the industry. I tend to dream bigger than my means so any help or guidance in actualizing my dream would be life changing for so many of us. Thank you so much for your channel I’m really grateful to have found you from the beginning!
Wonderful interview, I love to hear about how you guys where handling the creative process as well a the human side of things, producing gem after gem. This interview is a great companion to the documentary about We are the world, which is also available on UA-cam.
Anthony your channel is a treasure of info and inspiration! Your career work was already timeless and i appreciate you so much going above and beyond, telling these stories and publishing them for all future artists alike. Much love and many sincere thanks ❤
I still remember the BJ Thomas song “Rock n Roll Lullaby” and wondering if the Beach boys did the background vocals only to find out it was Tom and his brother and their arrangement.
Loved this Anthony. This content is priceless. Such an important document for the music history and for generations to come. Thank you for bringing these moments up for all of us.
