Sometimes, the world needs to see the worst of itself to realize it can do better. Hi, everybody. I really didn't mean to start any arguments in the replies, honestly. I apologize if I did, because I can see some people being kind of either frustrated with what I said or frustrated with what other people commented under it. I didn't try to start any debates. I was just simply saying that sometimes when you see what the reality is of how people are suffering, maybe you'll be more inclined to try and help. I tend to think, or at least I'd like to think, that humans want to live by each other's happiness, not each other's misery. So when we see somebody suffering, we feel inclined to help. Now obviously there's things like psychopathy and sociopathic tendencies, but I mean for the majority of people, I feel like when we see somebody in need, we want to help them, regardless of their race or gender or whatever. I feel like that's the goodness in humans. But sometimes people get very caught up in their own little worlds and kind of forget about the bigger picture, that's all. That's pretty much what I was getting at. I didn't really try to incite any kind of over-existential political opinions or anything like that. I apologize if it came off that way. I just was trying to point out that I think that deep down inside, no matter what, I think we're all just trying to get through life. Sometimes we get caught up in our own little worlds and forget that there's other people out there who really do need help. Media has completely numbed us all to the dark side of humanity. People say and do some of the most demented things and we see it every day. If it isn’t the fear-mongering horror show referred to as “the news,” then it’s the comment section of every social media platform.
Honestly, even if the show was real, I'd support it. It would easily have prevented the quiet suffering and deaths of thousands at the cost of a few people suffering in view of the masses. It's more immoral to ignore mass suffering than it is to show it in the harsh light of day to spur desperately needed action, even when standing in that light burns.
People thought the show was real because it was on television and presented to them. People are far more likely to be gullible than cynical; It's in retrospect that people would rather pretend they're hyper-aware of the dystopian existence they live in than admit they were fooled by a TV show about kidney donation.
Being Dutch, yes i knew about this, but i hard figured this wasn't real, but this was a great way to get some extra eyes on the issue, they got some great publicity, they did great man. Also, the creator of BNN himself died, he needed a new kidney, but had another issue, dwarfism, so good luck finding a kidney then, it's already hard to find a good match, throw in dwarfism, and your chances are basically zero.

I thinknthat says so much about how the human brain works. Only when confronted with ugly, nasty, dispicable horrifying circumstances do we pay attention and do anything. Then to top it off the "anything" we do is just a poorly thought out emotional reaction. Instead of seeing how desperate ppl in need of organ donors are that they would pull this stunt and feeling shame that us, humanity, left them to this decision in desperation. Even then only 50, 000 new donors signed up and the shame for the show continued. What use do we have for the flesh we leave behind?! Why not be a donor? So, are you a donor? If so, how did you contribute? Is there any proof of that contribution? Also, aren't doing the same thing as the people you're criticizing by just running your mouth on the internet instead of doing something productive?
You can't just do blanket statements like that. It's a Dutch show, the Netherlands are a small country anyway. You probably also don't know how the organ donation is regulated there. If people have to opt out specifically, there's no need to opt in. Many people also can't donate because of diseases, surgeries... even severe depression can rule you out for donating certain things. It's not just people being selfish
You can only be a donor in certain circumstances not everyone can just donate stuff even after death you need to be the right match and not touched drugs or alcohol in years/at all

@@luxeartro5060 - Why do you care? I think it is you who needs to get a life if you spend your time worrying about someone else's comment. fking loser.
I’m fairly sure that the entire reason to bring awareness for organ donation was because the Netherlands had an absolutely abysmal donation rate and the government did nothing about it.
My uncle died of kidney failure. There was a mix-up in the NHS and he got approved for a transplant 3 days after he had already passed away. I hope those donor kidneys saved a life and they are thriving right now. I support this awareness.
I am on dialysis 3 times a week, and i am sadly not eligible for transplant. But for those who can get it, i wish fhe best for them. But we need to increase the awareness
As a dutch guy I’m actually really proud. Dutch TV is known for not caring about ‘taboo’ if it helps public health and safety. The program we had about how to use drugs in a safe manner is the most well known one today but this used to be and still is a theme of PB in The Netherlands today.
And since we've moved on to opt out system. It allows the same freedom of choice, except it forces people to really consider the choice of organ donation as opposed to opt in where nobody cares until they're faced with the grim reality of nobody caring.
In the US we have an opt in opt out system. You need to tick the box yes or no during certain registrations like getting a driver's license iirc. I read somewhere in the comments that you have to jump through hoops to get off the list. I have a genetic condition that means I'd have to jump through those hoops to *save* lives, rather than it just being a required yes/no question to get ID or whatever, which is much more equal. Everyone has reasons to opt in or out, but it should be their choice either way.
@@marcelamonkey4268 still shouldn't have to. Should be a yes no box rather than an assumption either way. We still got all the "this is how important this is, you should totally do it" literature attached to that section of the form in the US, and there's tons of donors. I should be spending 2 seconds to make this decision for myself, not have to track down and fill out a large form which is likely asking probing questions and trying to guilt me *out* of saving lives. There's no reason an organ donor form should be anything other than a yes no question, so I'm assuming the rest is trying to convince them to let you keep your organs.
@@the_tactician9858it wasn’t a prank, it was “rage bait”. Make ppl angry about something unethical like have contestants that are going to die without a new kidney to try to win over a woman that is dying and wants to donate. Bc of the outrage the show caused before it even aired ppl all decided to watch it. The owner of BNN himself died bc there wasn’t a donor kidney for him (which is why they did this). It shocked the Netherlands and made more ppl become donors in the end.
Reminder that you have the right to your own body, even after death, and you have the choice to donate your remains or not. The choice is yours, nobody else's.
Living in Germany. As I was getting my new Insurancecard, a donor card was sent with it ... Filled out the card and went online to register just in case I lose the card :)
They also changed a law about being a donor a few years after this show. Now, once you are 18 you are a donor unless you opt out (which is easy to do). But because people who didn't care before don't have to go through the trouble of registering as a donor so many more lives are saved!
The big reason people are really skittish about becoming an organ donor is the anecdote of medical malpractice, bordering on human butchering that happened in the USA. The Kentucky organ donor scandal was the most recent one, but the times it happened were enough to scare shitless a lot of the public.
That sounds dystopian. A government by default laying claim to your body isn't ethical. That implies your body is community property. I'm not against organ donation, but I wouldn't accept one to save my life due to my personal beliefs and I wouldn't want my body harvested. And yes, I did think about it when I had a health crisis; I'm positive and my family knows the decision. Make it easy to opt in if you choose, but don't allow any government to claim it and make you jump through hoops to undo their claim.

"Such preventable deaths"... My wife works in recovery wards and has shared plenty of sad stories. Not the kind you are thinking of, let me share one story with you. A sister and brother came in just after kidney surgery. Brother gave up his kidney for the sister who had failing kidneys. They were failing because she was a drug addict and destroyed her body. The brother recovered quickly, the sister however, took a little extra. Nonetheless she was eventually released. Where she promptly returned to her old habits and in the span of a week, was back in the hospital where they were trying to save that kidney. During that time the brother was diagnosed with cancer in his back and it spread to his kidney. They tried everything but it was of no use, the kidney was to far gone. He was put on the list. While the sister made a full recovery, the brother did not. Sadly he died 3 months after saving his sister's life. 4 months after that the sister was submitted back to the hospital where he drug use finally took its toll. She would pass a week after being in the hospital from other complications. While she was an organ donor apparently the hospital decided it was to risky to donate her organs.
I am glad they knew, but I am sure it was still hard for them. The lady was an actress, but for the 'conrestants', it was still real...they were still kind-of pleading for their lives.
@jenniferpinaire2605 so I had to look it up because omg. They didn't just know they chose to participate because of the lack of donors in the Netherlands.
As a Dutch person, questionmarks kept appearing above my head the more I heard about it, questioning if this is legit or not. Until I heard BNN, they're good at hosting shows with a twist or triggering the public as a message lmaoooo
Well only 16m people lived in the netherlands at the time of the show. And since under 18 cant be live organ donors. (About 25% there) so 50k/12m possible donors is 1/240. Assuming ever person is healthy enough to be an organ donor. And also every single person watched/understood the show. Also assuming 0 people are already organ donors as well.
@avalope so between 2020 and 2021, when the law was changed, there was an increase from 3.8 million active positive registrations, to 4.8 million. If that 50k is all the effect was, then ouch.
Its sad how many people think they take the organs when youre dead. There was just another case recently of someone waking up and deciding he wasnt quite done with them. "Brain dead' isnt actually dead and its surprisingly often that they arent even "mostly dead'.
@@Cloud-ud1lh Just what I said. You arent dead yet when they take your organs. Organs from dead people can not be used or there would be no shortage of organs. This reminds me of the Brazilian billionaire who intended to bury his Bentley. Media went crazy. Just for him to tell them that it was a stunt to tell people not to waste organs that are much more important than a car.
I tell everyone I care about that I want whatever can be salvaged out of me to be donated. My sister wanted to be an organ donor but when she died the only organs that were viable were her eyes. The doctors and nurses tried for a really long time to save her life and because of that her organs couldn’t be salvaged.
I still remember this show. No one was not watching it after the media storm. After it was revealed it was a stunt, we were releaved. Happy to know about the update of the three contestants.
Unfortunately I’m removing my name off of the organ donor list because of numerous cases where people have temporary died or been in a coma and when they’d been shipped off for an organ check ( within hours of death or still in a coma) the patient will reawaken, where doctors were told to continue with surgery. Look it up, specifically the case of Anthony Thomas, it’s recent and not the first time it’s happened. This entire planet needs to be shaped up.
Thanks for sharing this story, It's important that nobody with any likelyhood of improvement should be operated on. Since my dad was a doner over here in europe I think there might be a misconception: the whole thing took days not hours. They tested for brain death, called the doctors from the organisation who then drove/flew there and takes blood. He sends the blood off to get tested and to find possible recepients and get checked if they are ready. And even then two operations have to be arranged and a timely transport of the organ. I do hope that the system in America is similarly organised.
@ for a specific case an elderly man was deemed dead and since he had organ donor they didn’t try to resuscitate. They sent him straight to the operating room so a team or surgeons could check his organs for any possible donors, but as they were about to start he woke up on the table and was vigorously looking around, tears in his eyes and trying to get free from the table, they were told to hold him down and get a doctor who would go through with the surgery. The surgeon said he broke down and couldn’t do it because he felt so cruel. Many MANY surgeons have come out about stories like this.. I’m from Canada myself:(
Here's the cool donor fact. Nowadays, as a Dutch citizen, you have to fill the papers if you DON'T want to be a donor or don't want to donate specific parts of you. People are often too lazy or don't know how to fill the obligations to be a donor even if they dont mind or want to, so the Dutch government decided to make everyone a donor by default. So when I die, I'm going to donate everything from my skin to my bones
I so wanted to give my dear friend one of mine, and though all was good, eventually I was found to be rejected in the final test. She did get one and lived for twenty more years. On the other hand during another test for myself, they found that I only have one fully developed kidney, so I’d have been rejected anyway.
Extra fact: It worked, the donor rates got significantlly higher after the show and still are & luckilly somwhere in the 2010's it was changed so that all dutchies automaticlly donate their organs, unless they really don't want to
My cousin was born with kidneys that didn’t grow past age 4. Being adopted , there were no familial donors known. Without the kindness of 3 people, the number of transplants needed for her to survive until age 58, she would’ve died likely by age 5-6. I’m so grateful for donors. In the end ? It turned out her husband was a perfect match. Dying of lung cancer at the time , it took nearly an act of god, he convinced the doctors to let him donate as he would surely die no matter : His wife had a chance to live . His dying gift of a kidney gifted her another 8 years of life before she succumbed to kidney cancer in the end . I don’t understand how peoples religious beliefs - most being quite similar - don’t all suggest/command that we all donate our earthly remains when they are no longer of use to us ; and if healthy, to share any excess which we can survive without . Do to a car accident , I myself live with one kidney and so just fine . What a great idea the tv show was , to bring awareness to the need of kidney donors .
Even if the show was real, I'd support it. It would easily have prevented the quiet suffering and horrific deaths of thousands at the cost of a few people suffering in view of the masses. It's more immoral to ignore mass suffering than it is to show it in the harsh light of day to spur desperately needed action, even when standing in that light burns.
For context BNN was a really boundary pushing channel which is probably the only reason so many believed them and their founder and leader had just passed from being unable to find a compatible donor so they where pretending that was their justification that saving 1 person was more than others had done for them. (The host was even less likely to find a donor than usual due to his dwarfism)
People rarely die from kidney disease/ failure now. I started dialysis at 20 and got a transplant at 25. I still have my disease but I won’t need another transplant till I’m in my 80’s.
This show was almost 20 years ago. Organ donation was not as common. I am form the UK and we now have an opt-out system instead of an opt-in system. Everyone over 18 has "assumed consent" as an organ donor unless they fill in the forms to opt-out.
its unlikely the transplanted kidney lasts till 80 but I had mine fail at 20 and get my transplant at 37 still mostly felt fine dialysis makes it almost like you dont have kidney failure if you diet properly
wow i am 36 and on the transplant list and i was told i should expect another transplant in my lifetime as kidneys transplanted usually last anywhere between 15-25 years depending on if its a living donor or a deceased one and how well your body receives it.
@@tobiasbuhl2037 always hope for the best but many rejections still happen in the first few years and unless its a family member donating most likely it will be a deceased kidney living donors are very rare for people with not related
I feel like if we live in a world where people can be denied an organ they need, making a show where they at least have a chance to get one is not more unethical then giving them no option at all.
@@dumplingdumpling2205 And politicians are highest priority. At least, that's what happens in Southeast Asia, where "opt-out" is the policy for a specific religious group. Oh, also, they can't request the form.
As someone who donated their kidney to their dad, please try if you know of someone who needs. Its so easy on your body and you will forget it ever happened but you will make such a difference for the receiver. I live exactly the same, eat all the same things, and have no issues.
Not too long ago there was a video of doctors refusing to remove the organs of a man that awoke from a coma. Some managerial person told them they still had to remove his organs. I’ve had organ donor on my license sense I first got my license over a decade ago. I am 100% removing that status due to that.
The problem is when you are at a hospital most doctors and hospital boards know they can make more money “saving” a patient till they die and using there organs to save someone who would pay them. Literally you’re running a risk of having corrupt medical officials choose your life
hospital boards, maybe. doctors? definitely not. most doctors i know are on a fixed salary, and none of them are like freelancing contractors. they don’t get paid more if they let you die - they get paid the same amount no matter what (unless obviously they are deemed fit for a raise due to exceptional work or pay cut due to letting people die because of incompetence)
Rather than just pulling all the plugs and transporting you to the morgue, they'll instead fight to keep your organs alive. You literally have more of a miracle shot if you're an organ donor.
Becoming an organ donor is a double edged sword. Studies have shown that someone who is an organ donor is less likely to receive proper emergency care, but you’re also saving a life if you do die.
This is a complete myth and no study has ever shown this. If they could prove they didn't try hard enough in just one case the hospital would get sued out of existence and the doctor would never work again. It is insane to think a doctor would not try as hard to save your life on the off chance they could use your organs. The doctors would have to be sociopaths. Any more urban myths you want to spread and risk lives? Vaccines cause autism maybe? They don't.
There's a story in the US media now about a man in Kentucky who woke during his honor walk to surgery to donate. His sister had been telling doctors she thought he was aware and they ignored her. He had tears as he tried to push them away. Surgeons refused to complete the surgery, but the organ donation coordinator still continued to pressure them to complete the surgery (and end this aware man) or they'd be penalized and another team brought in. He survived, but it's painfully obvious that at least in the US, the medical system is motivated in unscrupulous ways. They make a lot of money on organ procedures. The man is Anthony TJ Hoover II if you want to look it up. The University of North Texas Health Science Center is also in trouble for selling body parts of indigent patients who pass in their care, without consent or notifying families the person even passed. They sell parts for students to practice on in their studies when someone is donated for "medical science". At least in the US, the medical system cannot be trusted with patients when money is at stake. Ethics and humanity fall to the wayside.
I'm an organ donor. Gonna remove it, though. Heard of too many instances where the hospital doesn't help you, even when they can, and hurry to try to remove your organs. I don't want my organs once I die because I don't need them. But I still expect the hospital to do everything they can for me to live while I'm still here. Don't donate your organs, kids.
Sounds like a semi good ending to a terrible situation. But like any good thing, it can be abused. And becoming a donor upon death, could have some unforeseen consequences when the people without scruples will find a way to help the donor on their way to profit from it.

Sometimes when that's shoved in our face, we're more inclined to actually take action about it. That's all. I wasn't trying to start anything. My apologies if I did. And thank you for the likes.
Oh my god, I'm done. I'm done. There should be no debate. I'm saying we should help people for the sake of helping people, because it's the right thing to do. And maybe if we see it, and it gets shoved in our face, we will do something about it. But apparently not. Apparently we'll just fight about it. Like, we fight about everything, because nobody can put their differences aside for five fucking seconds to do something good for the world. But honestly, if you disagree with what I'm saying, that we should help people just because we should help people, because that's the right thing to do, you're a bad person. I don't care. You're a terrible human being. Like, I'm not gonna pull punches now. If you don't agree with what I'm saying, you're a bad person, and that's it. That's it. I'm not gonna say anything else, because I want to say a lot worse things, but I guarantee you this will get deleted if I do. Because, no, you are an unempathetic, terrible human being. Like, I wouldn't even call you a human being. Like, honestly, I don't want to be a human being. I don't want to be humans in humanity. Like, this was just nothing but a kind post that made me say, want to say that we should help people. And it turned into something that is just a fight. And it's not necessary, and it shouldn't happen. Like, what is wrong with all of you? Like, you can't even agree that we should help people that need help? Like, what the fuck is wrong with you? Grow up. Like, if you disagree with the fact that we should help people for the sake of helping people, you're a bad human being. You should just, like, not be a part of our society. And if most of you feel that way, then I don't want to be a part of society. Get me a rocket ship. I'll go somewhere else. I don't want to be one of you, if that's the case. If human life is a commodity, I don't want to be a part of humanity. Like, you've all genuinely made me feel like, honestly, maybe we're not worth saving. Maybe we're just all terrible people, and the few that aren't just don't matter because there's not enough of us. Like, I don't even know what to say. Like, I'm so depressed just from seeing all these criticizing comments and all these people fighting. Like, you've genuinely made me question if humanity is worth saving. Like, I don't understand how any of you logically look at that and go, Oh, that's something worth fighting about. Just because it's the right thing to do. That's it. That's all. And if it doesn't, there's something wrong with you, fundamentally. I'm done. I'm not replying after this.
Like, if you're being mean for the sake of being mean, or you're a troll, or whatever, you have made me depressed. You have made me genuinely think that, like, maybe we should just hit the big red button and just start this whole thing over. Like, genuinely. Because, like, if we can't even agree that we should help people that need help, like, why are we even here? Like, if we're not making somebody's life better, we're wasting our fucking time. And if you don't agree with that, you're a genuinely bad fucking person. Like, you have no empathy. You do not have the love of humanity in your heart, dude. Like, I'm not mean. Like, I don't say shit like this, but seeing this and being criticized for, like, just saying we should help people because it's the right thing to do, like, I don't even know what to say to that. Like, what is wrong with all of you? Like, stop messaging me. Stop commenting. I'm going to delete this, honestly. Cruelty squad type of show.
Proof that sometimes, to get things done, you can't worry about being appropriate.
Being Dutch, yes i knew about this, but i hard figured this wasn't real, but this was a great way to get some extra eyes on the issue, they got some great publicity, they did great man.

@@Joanna_135You don’t really have to jump through hoops from what I heard it’s 1 form that can take around 15-30 depending on the country.
And then it becomes harder to opt out. Laws like this are why governments reap more lives than wars.

Congrats, prepare to get garbage medical care and possibility of your organs being harvested without your permission...
I'm glad the "contestants" knew beforehand.

And then it becomes harder to opt out... And then people start vanishing.

In Singapore, citizens are automatically an organ donor unless you opt out of it.
The Netherlands has that too now. I think partially because of this show. Really got the conversation going
Well at least you realized your mistake.
Many people didn't and those will suffer consequences of their decision.
I’m from Canada myself:(
Yes exactly.
It’s sad that people are always willing to be outraged but never willing to make the change themselves
I so wanted to give my dear friend one of mine, and though all was good, eventually I was found to be rejected in the final test. She did get one and lived for twenty more years. On the other hand during another test for myself, they found that I only have one fully developed kidney, so I’d have been rejected anyway.

Extra fact: It worked, the donor rates got significantlly higher after the show and still are & luckilly somwhere in the 2010's it was changed so that all dutchies automaticlly donate their organs, unless they really don't want to
i remember my teacher telling my class about this, i'm from the netherlands and this happened before i was born but it was a good lesson to be teached

If the show saved the three that were on, and more lives after, then that’s a massive Win
controversial but effective.
Hearing that theyre all alive literally made me go "yippee!"
if it works it's not stupid, it worked
That's a hell of a publicity stunt and whoever put that together needs to be paid very very well because that is super smart
It takes the absurd and abscene to make people finally notice
I feel like if we live in a world where people can be denied an organ they need, making a show where they at least have a chance to get one is not more unethical then giving them no option at all.
Squid game IRL:
At first i thought this was a Danganronpa situation because of the intro and i was very concerned 😭
In Ireland you have to opt out and i did they are not harvesting me
Are you now lower on the priority list if you need an organ? That would be fair, yeah?
@@dumplingdumpling2205 And politicians are highest priority.
At least, that's what happens in Southeast Asia, where "opt-out" is the policy for a specific religious group. Oh, also, they can't request the form.
@@Mavendow which nation in SEA? Which religious group? Can you elaborate?
@@dumplingdumpling2205 I'm not allowed to elaborate.

As someone who donated their kidney to their dad, please try if you know of someone who needs. Its so easy on your body and you will forget it ever happened but you will make such a difference for the receiver. I live exactly the same, eat all the same things, and have no issues.
Good intentions, diabolical way to get point across😭😭😭
At least the contestants had a good ending
Thats such a great way to spred awareness to help people that needed kidneys badly.
Not too long ago there was a video of doctors refusing to remove the organs of a man that awoke from a coma. Some managerial person told them they still had to remove his organs.
I’ve had organ donor on my license sense I first got my license over a decade ago. I am 100% removing that status due to that.

This is why aliens won't visit us
As a Dutch person I've never heard of this show. On my way to read more about this!
Ik heb er ook nog nooit van gehoord
I'm English but older and so even I remember it. It made the news in the UK and people lost their minds about it until the truth came out.
@ cool that you reacted to us
wow this show premise is crazy. I have to watch it now
The problem is when you are at a hospital most doctors and hospital boards know they can make more money “saving” a patient till they die and using there organs to save someone who would pay them.
You literally have more of a miracle shot if you're an organ donor.
so take the profit incentive away and make it government run..
@ There’s no way of taking it away because the government is more corrupt you absolute spongecake
The beggining is actually crazy
“Sounds like a great idea, with the best of intentions. What could possibly go wrong?!”
Edit: it’s the backlash I’m making fun of
.... it went right though lol
tell me what went wrong? did you even watch the video?
@ didn’t you hear about the backlash? Did you not read the title?
@@Levele1234I mean, the backlash are signs that people are willing to do something instead of sitting around like they used to, if anything.
@ the backlash was part of the joke I made.
We need to redefine unethical, these actions keep saving thousands of lives every year.
Okay but they got what they wanted and as long no was harméd their plan was smart
They actually played an uno reverse card at the end of it and saved so many people with it
Wow Thats crazy never knew about this and i am Dutch
''it's (a little) not about the kidneys, it's about sending the messege''
Becoming an organ donor is a double edged sword. Studies have shown that someone who is an organ donor is less likely to receive proper emergency care, but you’re also saving a life if you do die.
This is a complete myth and no study has ever shown this. If they could prove they didn't try hard enough in just one case the hospital would get sued out of existence and the doctor would never work again. It is insane to think a doctor would not try as hard to save your life on the off chance they could use your organs. The doctors would have to be sociopaths.
Any more urban myths you want to spread and risk lives? Vaccines cause autism maybe? They don't.
What is the source of your information please?

This! Way to many horror stories. I don't wanna be an organ donor because I don't wanna be brought back to life just to be harvested alive
Sometimes you gotta be the bad guy to do good things.
Being an organ donor is the easiest way to save people's lives it's awesome.
Sounds like a semi good ending to a terrible situation.
But like any good thing, it can be abused. And becoming a donor upon death, could have some unforeseen consequences when the people without scruples will find a way to help the donor on their way to profit from it.
Now if the show was American...
