Been keeping Africans in 20s, 30s, 55s and 75s for years successfully. Actually for decades. Bred many. Kept many living for years and years and years.
This is more my speed. My largest tank is a 75. Don’t have the space to go larger. You have nice tanks and give me great insight as this relates to what I’m trying to do. Thanx bro💪🏿
I'm so glad you made this video. I just turned my 55 gallon tank into a cichlid tank. I was a little concerned that I may be doing it wrong but you've eased my mind. Thank you.💖🐡💖
Great video. A lot of people don't cover 55 - 90 gallon set-ups as an end-goal. There are 2 75g in my living room and a 55g fry tank. The peacock/hap tank has a similar amount of fish, I'm running a Fluval 406 and a double sponge filter (for 55g). I keep thinking about adding an AC110, but the tank is running very well and mine are smaller. Whereas the mbuna tank has a Pennplax 1200 + AC110 but nitrates tend to creep up. That's the mystery. I'm about to stick pothos back there. You're the millionth person to recommend it and I have a ton. Anyway, super long comment, but thanks for posting lol
When I started raising africans in the 70's I purchased a pair of 40 breeder tanks. They offered the best conditions for raising fish and I raised hundreds of fish in them over the years from 4" to 6". I eventually got a 55 gallon that was a large home tank at the time. I eventually set it up for my girlfriend in her home and she enjoyed it for years. She had no ideas on fish keeping so I bought two pond foam filters, added a pvc riser to each and topped them with a powerhead each with directions to change a bucket of water weekly and wash one filter per week in the old water before placing it back in the tank. Next thing I knew she had raised a tank of juveniles to adult fish. Bigger tanks are easier to deal with but smaller tanks will have just as much success with proper care. And yes crowding is always the answer when raising africans.
Aside from space and resources, another reason would be that we don’t want to maintain a tank that large! I think a 75 gallon is a fine size for Africans.
cant wait for the day you can have a mac daddy tank when i got my 180 i noticed my aggression levels switched 10fold its like having a different fish almost all together great video peace man
I run a 210 on the first floor. Dimensional lumber floor with a basement. Tank runs perpendicular to the lumber, of course. I ran a screwjack from the basement floor up to the bottom of the floor with 2x6's(vertically where they have their strength) running along the front side of the tank on top of the screwjack with the back of the tank up against the wall. My dad assured me that was overkill(just look at how your floor is laid out underneath your bathtub) but better safe than sorry. IMO 125 is a perfect size for most African cichlid setups and still plenty manageable. Anything bigger is just giving you more capacity for more fish(aside from the bigger species). 210 is for S.A. cichlids but is quite a PITA to maintain at times. Good info on running a "smaller" tank though. 75 is good also. 55 will work but as you see, you're limited on how many so make sure you pick and choose your fish ahead of time as it's going to fill up quick.
I have a fx5 on my 75 gal with chilids and do about 5 ro 6 water changes and some media replacement also use purigen tanks stays clear like yours never have problems.
Have run aquaclears for decades. One 110 and one 70 on the 75 and two 110s on the 55. And water changes of 25-40% about every 2-4 weeks. All do just fine. Lots of ways to do this. Your videos are great. Keep up the good work.
Awesome informative video! I have a 40G tank. I’m a beginner I’ve had my tank for like 6-7 months now. But I made a mistake and bought a variety type of cichlids. South American cichlids, Roseline sharks. African cichlids. So far no casualties, but my kenni cichlid is a bully and he punks all my fish.
Tazawa Tanks i made the mistake of putting an African c in with an oscer thats somthing ill never doing again the oscer ate the African poor guy didnt have a chance i thought there babbys it be okay like with the angiel fish. nope he eat him soon as i put him in the tank. then i found out you cant tank african with oscer at all ever wow
currently keeping demasoni and yellow labs [ including multiple mles] together in a 33 gallon for over a year. no casualties although the fems tend to get pushed around a lot. probably around 40-50 fish of varying ages including adults, juvies and fry. lots of filtration and 50 percent weekly water changes. not my fav tank tho so i may change it to a hillstream tank sooner or later
Great informative video I've got a 75gallon with 5 mature Haps all 5 nimbochromis species and a pleco. Filtration two canister filters. And i do a 20% water change every other day and are they doing very well.
Love your tanks and fish. I'm starting a cichlid tank and want something like peacocks and haps. I'm really not sure what I can keep together. Could you please advise? Thanks
Hey, found out about your channel today. And I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind. I’m a sixteen year old Dutch boy, so I can’t:1 pay expensive stuff like 2 ecotech marine wavemakers. 2 My mom doesn’t really want a huge tank, she thinks the 55 I have now is already really big, but I might just almost have convinced here a 125 gallon is better for my (still juvenile Raphael striped catfish 2 juvenile mdoka whitelips 1 bushynose pleco 4 yellow labs 1 crabro 3 strawberry cichlids and also some cool dark blue peacocks ((3)) with a yellow top fin) but back to the questions. So the mdoka whitelips, are they haps? Because I know the grow large. But they are called Placidochcromis so that confused me. Also how often should I do a water change. I do twice a week 70%~60% waterchange. Is that enough. Because these fish mean the world to me, when I watch them interact I forget all my problems. In my tank isn’t really a ton of aggression, the strawberry male is the meanest. But for some reason is my yellow lab ( they are all females the male died) verry aggressive aswell I think she’s mad because a hongi killed him and hisself. Also I like your content a ton! Keep up the good work! Sorry for my lack of English, once again I’m from the Netherlands. Cya!
Your tank is pretty, I have cichlids too. Is it cool to put green texas, texas terror, blue and strawberry peacocks and red jewels together in one tank?
I watch your video twice because I have a 180 aquarium with 3 sunsun 304B canister filters. I do 50% water change every week. I have at least 50 peacocks cichlids. I always thought that my Nitrates were out of control because my nitrates are always at 10 ppm before I do my weekly water change. My canisters are filled with BIO-HOME ULTIMATE MEDIA only ! my question for you is " Are my Nitrates out of control, do I need to do water changes every 4 days ? Or do I continue doing what I have been ? Nitrate 10 ppm Ammonia 0.25 ppm Nitrate 0 ppm PH 7.8 because I crushed coral & aragonite sand
Thanks for watching...twice! If you have 10ppm nitrates after one week, that means that your filtration is working well. Your nitrates are definitely not out of control. It sounds like what you are doing now seems to be working. Keep it up, and keep an eye on the ammonia levels.
I do have a eye on my ammonia level. I can't seem to get my ammonia level below 0.25 ppm . what do you thjnk is it because of my over stocking? THANKS for the reply
+Mr. DPFJ Aquariums No, I don't think you are overstocking your 180. Have you tested the water out of the tap? You'd be surprised. Sometimes city water shows ammonia. It may also be due to chloramines. I think you should be fine if they stay at 0.25. It sounds like you are doing 90 gallons per week, so I would say you are okay. If it creeps up, maybe do it every 4-5 days instead of once per week.
Mr. DPFJ Aquariums hold off, do 25% water changes every other week, no need to break you back. One trick is to feed every other day, fish are scavengers & don't need daily feedings nor multiple feedings per day etc. Add a dozen 8" large Anubias aquatic plants & duck weed floating plants that will suck majority of nitrates from tank. Or like UA-cam stated, add a above tank sump & add a dozen Pontho's plants & call it a day. There's a biologist called Kevin Novak, he uses Anoxy Filters, search UA-cam. Or uses a porous stone & laterite in baskets that sit in wet dry or sump filters that removes nitrates similarly to how biohome ultimate does. Keep your sleeves wet
can only manage to do a 45 gallon, tank any advice on what to fill it with, what type of fish and how many??? just starting out and im lost smh lol!!!!!
Love your video veey informative. Iv been breeding guppies mollies and patties since 2009 posting to youtube since 2011 and iv finnally decided to go for cichlids. I just purchased a 55 gallon tank i have a few 75 gallon filter plus all my heaters and substrate. Im just waiting on tbe hardscape before i set up the tank and get fish. Im waing to do a full ob peacock tank. What would be a great number to start out with in a 55 and should i start with inch long fish and grow them? Or get adults to start with?
how do you know you have enough oxygen in the water for Cichlids? i have a fluval fx6 in a 63 us gallon tank with the outlets pointing up to agitate the water but not sure if thats enough?
Hello, old post IKR...LOL but I just introduced some Parrot Cichlids to my used to be 40gal community tank with only Betta fish still in here now. Betta Elle is peaceful and bothers no one. The newly introduced Cichlids are hiding?? What should I do?
Most likely. A 75 gallon tank full of water is probably 750lbs. Consider having it up against a load-bearing wall (any of the exterior structure walls).
Nice tanks. Great information. I subbed. You can tell you are very experienced at fishkeeping. I have 125g Hap/Peacock tank, 60g Mbuna, 40g breeder peaceful tropical tank (guppies, mollies, etc). I also just started a 50g breeder Mbuna. I'm only going to put around 10 Mbuna in the 50g along with the 4 Pitbull and BN plecos already in there.
Is 7 mabuna cichlids okay for for a 40 gallon breeder with it being filtered 18 times an hour and a 50-60 percent water change every week? Also have Hiding spots and good water parameters.
I have a 55 what mbunas would you stock? There’s so many options I’m looking online for a reputable source. Any recommendations thank you for your content I really appreciate it! Can I send you a picture of my tank that is currently cycling? I have reef rock and sand I’ve mad little caves etc. I’m really pulled towards mbunas! But I can’t figure out the right stocking list. Thinking of adding about 15 to start out with just to make sure I have everything right before I add more. Tytyty!
Great video, keep them up! I'm new to the hobby myself, what I'm learning is when my Ehiem canister says it's rated at 300 gph, after it goes through filter floss, Sponges, ceramic media & that canister sits on the floor with a head height of 3-5 feet we're looking 50-60% of that rated flow number, right? So if I wanted to turn my 55 gallon over 7-10 times I'd either need two ehiem canisters each rated at 500 gph or have one canister rated at 800-1000gph. Not so much for biological needs, my test are 0,0,20ppm with one canister, I'm talking more about crystal clear water from side to side viewing etc. More for mechanical filtration such as activated carbon, Purigen space, filter floss, micron filter pads etc
Thanks Michael. As far as gph, the main issue will be head loss. Filter floss, media, etc, does not affect the flow rate as much as you would think. Also, the volume of the canister and larger diameter helps in not restricting flow. Things that will affect your head loss will be distance and vertical lift, coupled with pipe diameter. As an example, an Eheim 1250 pump is rated at 316 US gph. If you have a 5' pipe at .75" that goes up 4', the flow rate at the exit would be 188 gph, about 59% of top output. If you want to turn your tank over 7 times per hour, you will need 650 gph posted to get to the need flow of around 380-385gph (7*55). If you want to turn your tank over 10 times in an hour, you will need 925 gph posted to get 550 gph after head loss. I hope this helps and makes sense!
Tazawa Tanks thanks 4 reply, appreciated. Your right about pipe sizes. I found through trial & error, bought a 500 gph power head pump, went to Home Depot bought pvc pipes & elbows to get ready for tank. I timed how long to fill 1 gallon jug & was disappointed when gph was ccut in half. I first used 1/2" pipes & elbows which restricted flow from pump. I switched for 3/4" or 1" piping & had exact 500 gph output, whew. Newbie learning curve! I still waiting for my Fluid Dynamics certificate in the mail any day now :-0 lol
I am so happy I Subscribed to your channel I find it so interesting I have learned so much from you. I will continue to look forward in watching your videos. Thank you so much
Awesome video. I subbed. What filtration do you recommend for a 55 gal African tank. I’m in the process of setting up my tank and already have a fluval 306, not really sure what I should combine with this.
It depends on how it was built and where the tank is placed. Maybe against the wall along an exterior wall. I would check with some construction engineers to as them. a 125 gallon aquarium with water and substrate will weigh about 1200 lbs.
Hello & thanks for the video. At 8 mins on the left side of the Aquarium there is a dark blue fish, which is lovely, can you tell me what it is please? Also at 14 mins there is an orange (ish) in about the centre, I'd like to know the name of that. I'm setting up a Cichlid Aquarium asap. Thanks
Tazawa Tanks I have 19 2-2.5” peacocks and haps in the 125g and I have 7 adults stuck in a 54g right now. Afraid they might kill the smaller fish so I’m doing some power feeding exercises persay to try and get them to grow so I can add the bigger fish to the bigger tank. Love your videos, thanks for the reply man!
I have a solid stocking in a 29. Don't let people scare you, just be smart with the stocking. I have a yellow lab, demasoni, powder blue, red shoulder peacock, rusty, and a spotted Raphael. Not overcrowded but enough to keep aggression issues away.
I have 4 small African cichlids in a 20 gallon, Im planning on keeping them in a 40 gallon once they grow in about 6 months and maybe keeping about 4-6. But everyone says you need a minimum of a 55gallon. Do you think they’ll be happy in a 40? I don’t see why not as long as I keep less fish. I mean the guy in the video has about 15+ fish in a 75 gallon so in my opinion why wouldn’t 5 be okay in a 40
@@antofrancisco9435 people say 55 because you usually want to overcrowd cichlids to lower aggression. If you get a 40 like your planning on, having 8 cichlids will be fine, you don't need a 55.
I have a 36 gallon with 4 african cichlids. They're about 1 inch right now, max size will be 4-5inches. How many can I add to my tank to "safely" over stock it?
+Benjamin Vanlandingham I am feeding a variety of foods, including Northfin, Hikari, Repashy, and once in awhile some mysis and brine shrimp. The Peacock/Haps and Tanganyikan tanks get more of a protein-based diet, while the Mbuna get more veggie-based (I also give them fresh vegetables and seaweed).
I have 120 litre tank which is 31 u.s gallons have round 10 fish with 2 catfish is tha more than enough for the size of tank I have?whats the approx I can have how many fish?in my size of tank?your videos are so good I’m new to fish keeping its my second year in the hobby n still learning 👍🏻
Tazawa Tanks no not adding anymore that’s all I can have medium tank like I said in your videos Carnt afford big tanks down to money space in the house etc..... should be ok tho shouldn’t it?have plenty of rock work and have fluval 120 filter set up I do water chances once a week due to being on a water meter I’m from the 🇬🇧 by the way will have to do for now 👍🏻
Hey, I'm 3 years late but if I got a group of african cichlids for my 110 gallon how long do you think they would take to grow to full size if they are about 1 inch now?
Hey man, just got my first 55 gallon. Been keeping fish for a few years now and got 4 peacocks from my pet store around 2 inches. Also have 2 6 inch lace catfish in the tank. Can I put anymore Africans In there, and if so, how many?
Hi! I just got a beautiful 45 gallon curved glass aquarium that Im planning to display. This is my fourth aquarium, my largest is full of discus and my 75 gallon is full of a huge variety of tropical fish, from gourami to ghost knifefish (somehow there has never been any deaths from other fish in this tank!!!). I also have a breeder which is currently full of danio and guppies. I am definitely planning to stock my new aquarium with african cichlids, but I have never had any experience with them, and neither have my friends! I was wondering if you (or anyone in the comments :) ) could please give me a guide on some things. Which breed should I stock with??? I am great with water parameters and everything... Also how many? How should I introduce the fish? All at once? Do you have any other tips for people getting into cichlids? Thank you so much for any help!!!! btw I love your content, you have some really beautiful tanks, subbed!!!
Hi Leo. I have filmed a few videos on the subject. I recommend watching my video that talks about keeping African Cichlids in medium sized tanks. As far as what kind of Africans, I am assuming you want Lake Malawi fish? If so, I would suggest only smaller, peaceful Mbuna species. Introducing them all at once (within a week or so, several at a time) as juveniles would be best if the tank is cycled and the media can handle the bio load. If you wanted to try something different, there are a lot of wonderful Lake Tanganyikan fish that could also work.
Should I put flow behind my background? I see a lot of stagnant water back there. The only thing I can think to keep it cleaner back there besides flow, is do water changes from behind the background. What do you think?
I'm setting up a 40 breeder, could you give me some recommendations on stock? I'm looking to scape the tanks with rocks as well but the ones i got from the beach are too heavy, any suggestions?

Could u tell me if a fine colored quartz ( black) would work just as well as sand for cichlids?
I have kept a Frontosa in a 65 gallon (UK gallon) tank no problem at all
Do you have advice for me? I have a 29 and want to keep peacock cichlids

I've run a 55 for years.
How many cichlids do u have in it
What size return pumps are you currently using in your wet/dry filters?
What size hose or pvc pipes used as overflows into wet dry: 1/2", 2", 3"?
I have three different pumps in my sumps. I believe they are around 350-400 gph. As far as the overflow diameter, 1".
Great vid! Always very informative. Def looking to do an African tank in the future and I can only have a 75 gallon max. Great content keep it up
Great video! Great tips as always!
Thanks Tony!
Zenzo, if I were to upgrade my multies colony from a 20 long to say a 75 gallon, what tank mates would you recommend from the Lake Tanganyika biotope?
Any smaller Tanganyikan fish that stays higher up. Many types of cyprichromis. Brichardi. Julies. Etc.
@@TazawaTanks Thank you for the suggestions.

Your setup looks great, so do the fish👍👍I subbed you.
Thank you for the sub and for watching the video Ralph!
thanks bro I just started a tank of African hope I could do as well as you do
can only manage to do a 45 gallon, tank any advice on what to fill it with, what type of fish and how many??? just starting out and im lost smh lol!!!!!
Hello I have a 20inch tank how many cichlids can I put in it?
I have a 120 litre tank it’s a fish box 120 n have African chiclids hope it goes well like u say space in the house
Hi Hunter. In a 55, I would suggest Mbuna rather than peacocks. I would start with smaller fish and let them grow out.
Tazawa Tanks how many would you suggest getting to start off with?
Great tank, what light fixture?
hey Does African Cichlid. eats Their Fry If Parent Fishes Was not separated??
How many were in your 75 gallon tank. I think I missed it.
Can I keep about 4-6 small - medium peacocks in a 40 gallon Aquarium?
Before I watch this..Ima say your bulk profile/ icon fish is awesome...
+Benjamin Vanlandingham Thanks! A friend of mine designed it for me, as it incorporates my love for both weightlifting and fish!
how do you know you have enough oxygen in the water for Cichlids? i have a fluval fx6 in a 63 us gallon tank with the outlets pointing up to agitate the water but not sure if thats enough?
Hello, old post IKR...LOL but I just introduced some Parrot Cichlids to my used to be 40gal community tank with only Betta fish still in here now. Betta Elle is peaceful and bothers no one. The newly introduced Cichlids are hiding?? What should I do?
They may be hiding because it’s a new tank. Give them some time. Once they associate you with food, they will come out more often.
Is it possible to have a 75 g tank in top floor of a concrete structure building , considering its weight?
Most likely. A 75 gallon tank full of water is probably 750lbs. Consider having it up against a load-bearing wall (any of the exterior structure walls).
Great Vid! I tried a 40b with some Mbuna chichlids and failed miserably I feel it is too cramped for so much agression.
Jorge Figueroa Thanks Jorge. Yes, a 40b isn't easy, but it is doable...it does take more work though!
I keep them in 45 gallons just fine
I have 40 gallon breeder with about 18 mbunas 1-3 inch
What advice do you have for juveniles. Seems they are harder to care for. What is any advice you have
@Tazawa Tanks , have you considered n auto drip system? Wouldn’t that enable you to spread out your water changes?
Most Mauna will do fine in smaller tanks as well as they are overstocked not to overstocked, wouldn't go any smaller than 40 gallons
Tytyty!
Thanks for the great information..yup not everyone can afford a larger tank..👍🏼
Thank you so much
Thank you Frank! I am glad you enjoy the channel.
Why so much water changes are yu overfeeding
Thanks bro!
Awesome video. I subbed. What filtration do you recommend for a 55 gal African tank. I’m in the process of setting up my tank and already have a fluval 306, not really sure what I should combine with this.
Thanks! I would add a large HOB. Maybe an Aquaclear 70 or 110.
Tazawa Tanks Thanks for the response.
You think a 100 or 125 gallon tank would do okay in a standard second story house ?
It depends on how it was built and where the tank is placed. Maybe against the wall along an exterior wall. I would check with some construction engineers to as them. a 125 gallon aquarium with water and substrate will weigh about 1200 lbs.
Hello & thanks for the video.
At 8 mins on the left side of the Aquarium there is a dark blue fish, which is lovely, can you tell me what it is please?
Also at 14 mins there is an orange (ish) in about the centre, I'd like to know the name of that. I'm setting up a Cichlid Aquarium asap.
Thanks
I think I counted 25 in that 75g!!? And I thought my 125g was going to be over stocked with 26
Lol!
I have around 18-20 currently (probably two years later).
Sabretooth how long does it take for them to grow from a juvenile to about the size in his aquarium
@@antofrancisco9435 not long at all bro, honestly under a year.
Sabretooth you think it’ll be okay if I keep the 40 for about a year then get a 55 or 65 when they get to big
Great video
How can you overstock a new tank before the bacteria gets working to reduce ammonia? Every tank I've done had the number of fish gradually built up.
It’s all about the frequent water changes in smaller tanks
Is 75 gallon big enough for a few?
I’m building a 75 tank and have 950 gph filtration my wife is wanting a blue dolphin Cichlid what would you recommend stocking with it and how many
I have a 36 gallon with 4 african cichlids. They're about 1 inch right now, max size will be 4-5inches. How many can I add to my tank to "safely" over stock it?
Depends what type. If they are larger mbuna or peacocks, just a few. Smaller dwarf species - 8+
Hey, I wonder if it ok if I puts eight African in 29 gallon tank?
What are u feeding your 75 cichlid tank?
+Benjamin Vanlandingham I am feeding a variety of foods, including Northfin, Hikari, Repashy, and once in awhile some mysis and brine shrimp. The Peacock/Haps and Tanganyikan tanks get more of a protein-based diet, while the Mbuna get more veggie-based (I also give them fresh vegetables and seaweed).
How many peacocks would be best for a 58 gallon tank. thanks tim
Hi Tim, what are the dimensions of the 58 gallon? I would probably do mbuna rather than peacocks.
Good info...
I have a ton of 50 breeders and I have always done 1 fish for every 10 gallons
I have 120 litre tank which is 31 u.s gallons have round 10 fish with 2 catfish is tha more than enough for the size of tank I have?whats the approx I can have how many fish?in my size of tank?your videos are so good I’m new to fish keeping its my second year in the hobby n still learning 👍🏻
What kind of fish?
African chiclids 👍🏻
That’s a very small tank for Malawi cichlids. If you already have that many, I would not add more.
Tazawa Tanks no not adding anymore that’s all I can have medium tank like I said in your videos Carnt afford big tanks down to money space in the house etc..... should be ok tho shouldn’t it?have plenty of rock work and have fluval 120 filter set up I do water chances once a week due to being on a water meter I’m from the 🇬🇧 by the way will have to do for now 👍🏻
Tazawa Tanks do you have an email I have took pics of my tank want to send you see what u think?if ok?thanks
Any reason I couldn't keep cichlids in a 55g corner tank, itll be running an fx6 filter
It depends on the type of cichlid. I wouldn’t keep peacocks in a 55 corner tank because of less swimming space. Smaller mbuna may be okay.
Yes. Probably another 6-8 or so.
Thanks so much! I think I might go for Tanganyikans!
Should I put flow behind my background? I see a lot of stagnant water back there. The only thing I can think to keep it cleaner back there besides flow, is do water changes from behind the background. What do you think?
It’s a good idea. An air stone would easily fit behind it. I have my filter outlets behind mine
@@TazawaTanks I like the idea of the outlets behind there. Thanks.
How many fish do you have in that tank?
Do you think this tank size is suitable for male peacocks. 110cm long and 55cm depth and 61cm high. its 340 litres which is 89 us gallons. Thanks.
Yes, it’s probably okay for a small to medium group.
I'm setting up a 40 breeder, could you give me some recommendations on stock? I'm looking to scape the tanks with rocks as well but the ones i got from the beach are too heavy, any suggestions?
Lava rock is always good because it’s a lot lighter. I’m partial to Tanganyikan fish. So many cool choices.
Love how they swim n then bammmm they still
