  • Bullying those with eye glasses is bad. So AMC gave Rambler buyers a choice of two - or four - headlamps. Call ‘em “four eyes” or “two eyes’, these 1960 Ramblers helped earn AMC a record $1-billion in sales that year.

The thing I will always remember about those year Ramblers was that the starter switch was the Neutral (push) button for the transmission. Fast forward to 1977 and I was 18 and working at a gas station. One of the (career) attendants thought he would try to embarrass me, so he asked me to move a Rambler station wagon. (He wouldn't normally do that) He figured I would have to ask him to come and show me how to start it. (That is probably what happened to him). Anyway, I jumped in the car turned the key and hit the starter switch like I'd done it 100 times. I watched his surprised reaction out of the corner of my eye.

In the small Midwestern town where I grew up there was a house that always had a pair of these Ramblers parked out front - one a wagon and the other a sedan. I always thought the inverse c-pillars were a neat styling touch on these cars! It was also the first house I ever recall seeing that had a ramp leading up to the front door versus traditional stairs.
Back in those days (early-to-mid 1970’s) there were quite a few places around town where I could always count on seeing certain vehicles. The funny thing is, now 50-years later when I go back for a visit I still somehow expect to see certain vehicles in front of certain houses and always feel a bit surprised when I see a Toyota Camry out front instead…….😂

There was a guy that had an older home with a bunch of old mail Jeeps in the yard. Eventually I believe he passed away, the property was sold, the vehicles removed and the house torn down. Two "modern" houses stand in its place. When my grandfather passed away in 2012, we approached an architect about what could done with the property. If you can imagine, at least TWO houses could be put on an 80x100 property---and those were multi-family properties. We thought about forming a company and building on the land, but it didn't work out. It did eventually work out. We sold part of the property and I bought the other half which has my garage and workshop on it.

Dad always drove Ramblers (and later AM products) because they had “good heaters”. My favorite was the brown-ish tan wagon that my oldest brother impaled on a tree that had jumped into the middle of the road in front of him. To think an auto manufacturer would let you customize your headlight configuration - incredible!

Steve, you bringing up the key way shearing when drag racing (at the end of the video)... reminded me of the only time that I can remember my dad trying to race someone.😁
This was back in the latter 1970s.
My dad had a 1962 Chevy C10. That summer, he and I had just rebuilt the pickup.
    The pickup had a L79 327 out of a Corvette; backed by a 4-spd; and a 4:10 (or 4:11) posi differential.
Anyway, one October day, one of my dad's friends brought over a similar C10, that the friend had just rebuilt. His pickup had a 396 transplanted in it.
Well, they went out on the highway in front of our place.
Intending to drag race from a sitting start.
My dad had "severe tread" off-road tires on the rear.
His friend had just basic highway tread tires.
When my dad popped the clutch and floored the accelerator...his pickup barely moved... because those off-road tires got such good grip...he busted BOTH axles!!
Because it had been his friend's idea to race, the friend bought my dad new axles and pinion gear, and rebuilt dad's differential for him.

Hi Nathan Hill, Thanks for writing. Regarding Motor Trend reviving new episodes of Roadkill's Junkyard Gold, I doubt it'll ever be proposed due to a New Management team that isn't made up of "car people". These guys came in from the Velocity Channel when Velocity and Motor Trend on Demand merged. These are the exact same Velocity guys that "passed' on my 2015 "pitch" for a Junkyard Crawl TV show. They called it "too teacher-y and too technical". But in 2018 Motor Trend On Demand's DAVID FREIBUTGER "saw the merit" and allowed a test season of 8 episodes to be shown on Motor Trend On Demand. It was a minor hit and subscribers really liked it. We did 3 seasons and 31 episodes through 2020. And then the Velocity Channel guys entered the scene. My show - along with Dirt Every day - were scrapped in favor of more "glitzy" semi-automotive TV shows to be shown on the new Trend Motor Backwards Channel. You probably know which shows these are / were. Anyhoo, I then realized I couldn't trust Trend Motor Backwards with my profession and started this UA-cam channel about 18 months ago making these straight-ahead, low-glitz Junkyard Crawl episodes. Guess what, many viewers don't mind the lack of "scripted drama" and cheesy situational set-ups or forced "themes". Truth be told, I'd NEVER go back to Trend Motor Backwards unless they gave me TOTAL FREEDOM from the network knuckleheads who "think they know TV". Baaaah! One detail, none of this applies to David Freiburger, the HARDEST WORKING MAN IN THE BIZ. I owe Freiburger a LOT and must make it known that he was NOT part of the problem in any way. Anyhoo, if you like these Junkyard Crawl videos, then simply stay tuned! I appreciate the fact folks like you enjoy junkyard visits as much as I do! -Steve Magnante

Hi Steve, great video on these Ramblers and the unique opportunity to have 2 or 4 eyes. 🤓 Odd, just yesterday, I was reading an article on the Rambler on how they didn't listen to Car and Driver. If I remember correctly, it was something about not having the car magazines on AMC's side to generate positive free media and the import invasion. The article read something like "unimaginable people driving to unimaginable places on smooth straight roads" the article mentioned Roy Abernethy also. I'm no "copy and paste" guy, so I'm sure I'm wrong, but it wouldn't be the 1st or last. 🏆 Hopefully we will see that cool 60? wagon next to you in a future vid.
    Namaste 🙏🏼

I believe you are talking about a Car & Driver road test of a 1964 Rambler American. I don't have the month of the article, but a few months later, they got a slew of hate mail from Rambler drivers.

@61rampy65 Hi, you're 100% correct! It was a few days ago that I read the article I believe it was on an Indie Auto write-up. I read a lot of transportation articles and sometimes that info will run together. It ain't the 1st time I've been wrong and certainly not the last. 😇 Thanks for commenting on my comment 😀 .
      Namaste 🙏🏼

Rambler wagons from 1958 - 59 are collector darlings now. Especially with the vintage camping aficionados who want everything period correct on display at vintage camping gatherings! I also think those 58 -59 Rambler Wagons are good looking automobiles.

My old man owned a 1959 Ambassador complete with the "Continental Tire" option.. The only downside to this car that had both my parents use words that me and my kid brother should have never-ever heard was when the transmission "Push Button Selectors" would pop-out and hit the floor {usually at night} which is why a flashlight became standard glove box equipment

    A couple of notes.
The 7" dual headlights were standard only on the base model Rambler Six Deluxe, with the quad system optional at extra cost. The quad lights were standard on the Rambler Super and Custom trim levels, as well as on all Ambassadors. The lack of side trim on the center car makes it a Deluxe, the one on the right is a Custom, the wagon is at least a Super.
These are examples of the 1960 Rambler, available with a six or a Rebel V-8. The Classic name was not used until 1961.
In 1966 Ambassadors dropped the Rambler name, they were AMC Ambassadors. Mid-size Rebels dropped the Rambler name beginning in 1968 and the last Rambler American, known only as the Rambler, ended the line in 1969.
The rear suspension radius rods, (AMC term: Truss Rods), were bolted to a bracket on the torque tube, not the back of the transmission.
    Thanks for the video.

I recall my father saying that quad headlights were considered an exciting styling and technological innovation at the time.

I have never seen a single headlamp Rambler here in Winnipeg. There were actually quite a few and they seemed popular with teachers. 3 new ones in 1960 at my school.

Funny how one hood is flimsy as paper, but the other is strong enough to support a pile of heavy driveline parts.
