I am sitting here right now in the shadow of Clinch Mountain listening to the music of Dr. Ralph Stanley. I live in Russell County, the small town of Rosedale. Dr. Stanley was the best as far as I am concerned. No one was better then Dr. Ralph. He will be singing in Gods Angel Band someday.

I have been listening to this music for over 50 yrs and I am 63. Dr. Ralph is getting old but during his early years with Carter, he was a smoker of the old time music circuit, I grew up with his music in Cincinnati.

Used to see Ralph and the Clinch Mountain Boys at McCabe's Guitar Shop, in the 100 seat back room, every year in the 90's and early 00's. Ralph Jr., Very much out front, Steve Sparkman on the 5 string, just incredible. Used to sit in the front row and watch James Shelton pick that beautiful Martin guitar, 3 feet away. What a treat. Ralph would play claw hammer style on his banjo for one tune only. Then "Oh Brother where Art Though" was released, Ralph's stock went up, and Ralph never came back to McCabe's. But those shows were absolutely incredible to be so close to all that amazing talent. Those fellas could play!

Just the greatest bluegrass singer and banjo player the World has ever known. He touched so many lives and saved so many souls. I had the honor of shaking his hand and I will never forget him as he represents all that is good in this World. He is finally re-united with Carter again. I will see you again someday my friend.....up in Gloryland. RIP

I saw Ralph Stanley live in Annapolis, MD some years back. He had his son playing with him. His son's son was plucking around on a guitar at the back of the stage. I thought it was cute... Then the grandson came out and took the lead!... Three generations on one stage!

He wanted to keep making money so he continued, but more than that, he still enjoyed the crowds. He would come out at intro, take a few rests on an old log or chair and then bust out some additional tunes. anyone that can do it at that age is a real warrior and lover of music.
