I manage a men's suiting/tailor shop in L.A. Half my job is selling suits and the other half is educating men on how a suit should fit. I came across your videos thanks to the algorithm. I refer to you at least twice a day. Especially when speaking to the you get guys. Everybody walks in regardless of size and says the same thing. I want slim, I want slim. Even guys who are 50L. I say it's not about slim it's about getting the right fit, then getting it to fit how you'd like. Shoulders, chest, back. I tell get these are the main components of getting the jacket to sit on them correctly. Thank you for your education and content. There are so few men's suiting shops left. Most guys walk into the mall and some 23 year old kid from houseware is covering and could careless and doesn't know anything about men's clothing will sell them a suiting separate because that's all that will fit them( American men). You must understand these traditional coats were made to keep you warm. The longer the coat, the warmer you are. As well, men walked more places, so the actual fabrics were hefty and heavy. As well, overcoats are supposed to fit comfortably over your suit also not limiting movement.
Yes but you miss his point. Long overcoats are not the problem, but they must exist as a holistic design, not simply a version of a shorter jacket with a lower hem.
Being a shorter, stocky guy, overcoats are some of the only dress items I can buy off the rack for exactly the reasons Proff mentioned about the length and the lower button stance. Unlike with suits and blazers, by buying regular length I only need the sleeves shortened and maybe the width adjusted to have a great fitting overcoat that actually does what it's supposed to.
If you’re 6’2” or taller, the full length overcoat that you speak of makes a lot of sense from a practical and aesthetic perspective. However, if you’re under 6’, this type of coat will make you look smaller (even with proper tailoring). This may be why topcoats were invented. Side note, love the overcoat you modeled. Just not the hat, only because the hat looks like it’s more of a spring to summer vibe, whereas the overcoat is more late fall to winter vibe. Nonetheless, another great video. Thanks for sharing.
Maybe it’s not an “OVERcoat” but it’s still a fashionable coat that keeps you warm. I live in SE Texas and we have mild winters for the most part where a shorter winter coat is very much appropriate. As a fashion traditionalist, these shorter coats coupled with more casual fashions must be driving you absolutely crazy. 😁
This is not entirely correct. Button placement is relative to how a garment fastens and allows movement of the body. if you push button placement too low, leg movement is restricted and you cannot sit / bend down in the coat. There's a reason jackets button where they do! Yes you can add functional fastenings lower down, but as with many lower jacket buttons these are optional fittings that are rarely used in practice.
Well you could opt for original vintage from the 30s 40s and 50s . He has taken great influence from those periods and you'd nail the look until you're able to buy your first piece from Okey
THANK YOU!!! I noticed this as a common theme with a majority of fast fashion brands. It seems like they are saving money and materials by shortening the length of these coats. Even trench coats! When you look back, a lot of these overcoats stem from the military design. It’s supposed to be practical and protect you from the elements, thats why they are long enough to cover most of your body. This is why it’s called an ‘over’ coat! For some reason, this change of design choice of shortening coats is not omitted for the ladies (from observation). So i don’t know why it’s popular for mens. It’s quite a rare find these days.
I'm very happy with my Reiss double breasted coat. Doesn't have that odd skirt below it (the cut goes all the way to the bottom) and keeps me nice and warm
I love three-quarter coats. I think they’re much easier to move around then and accessorize suits or even jeans and other things other garments also never thought they look like a dress.
Hmmm well i actually own two lengths of winter dress coat. One is mid-thigh, but I wear it to dress up an otherwise casual outfit. Pea coats are simply too short - may as well wear a thick cardigan. The other is actually ankle length! It lets ZERO cold air in. Reminds me of some of those old military full-length coats. Both look fashionable on me. In fact I rarely get looks askance because both have a purpose easily understood by the random passer by.
A jacket is something that is equal height to your sleeves or higher. Anything lower than your sleeves is a coat. So start correctly calling them suit coats instead of jackets. Jacket originates from the name Jack and it's what they used to call peasants' outerwear.

I have a couple of the "overcoats" which are more like a double breasted 3/4 coats and a couple of proper overcoats in camel and navy. When it comes to winter I wear these constantly but in autumn and spring I personally prefer the shorter length even if it is not as classical, usually the rest of my outfit makes up for it 😂
There is room for all different styles. I think some modern three quarter coats look nice if they are worn with the right kind of pants. I also love to see a man in a long over coat.
Some of these guys opinions are stuck in a time capsule. This is 2024. Design changes. These guys want to continue to recycle the same old classis designs. No one really wears a full length overcoat anymore. I have one and it's collecting dust. Even when I were a suit in the cold I don't use my overcoat. I invested in an overcoat very similar to the one you showed here. I bought it from a place in london called coordings. Its a classic style overcoat that is 100% wool and in navy. I love the one you have here! Looks very dapper and smart!

Those coats look fine.. Stop with the over complication of style and clothes. Dress what you can buy and what you feel comfortable in. Find a good tailor and thats it.
Those arenot "overcoats". Those are "car coats". They are not designed to be worn with business shirts, or sport jackets underneath. They are designed to be worn with turtlenecks, cable knit seaters, mock necks, crew necks, flat caos, and caps. They are for stylish casual outings, not related to business at all.

The point these gents are making is retailers are effectively misselling ‘car coats’ (and perhaps even peacoats) to the lesser-educated gentleman veiled as an overcoat. Why not just call it what it is? Or better yet, also offer actual overcoats? How can you trust a company to provide clothing to fit, when they cannot even get basics right. I admit, before following this channel, I was none the wiser - I own an ‘overcoat’ from a reputable clothing company (which I now is not, technically, an overcoat - although it runs just above my knee).

They're called "car coats". They're very common, functional piece. They've been around for over a century. These lovely car coats come in many styles and patterns and flavors. Actually are much better than an overcoat in my opinion.

None of _these_ clothes. I'm the same height. High waisted, full cut trousers will make men our size look even smaller. If you're slim, go with an Italian cut suit, maybe even one with a vest. If you're athletic and muscular, you might need a custom cut suit to flatter your silhouette.
You should wear high waisted pants. That other guy is wrong. Lengthens your legs a lot. Idk about okeys cuts for shorter guys they look a little long sometimes, but for sure high waisted pants at minimum.

It's boxy and loose and silly looking. It's cute as hell on that kid, but a full cut suit gives a childish vibe on a shorter man.

My brother, respectfully, what you are wearing is more of a corporate look. From a stylish perspective, it doesn't stand out. You stand out because of your physique. When I put on a uniform, my objective is to stand out from the rest of the crowd. To have on the best uniform in the joint from shoes to head. Black men naturally have a better physique than other racists. So we look better in a uniform. But what happens when you're in a location where everyone one can dress and have your physique? Now! What should one wear when they are short (I'm 5'7)?
None of _these_ clothes. I'm the same height. High waisted, full cut trousers will make men our size look even smaller.
If you're slim, go with an Italian cut suit, maybe even one with a vest. If you're athletic and muscular, you might need a custom cut suit to flatter your silhouette.
You should wear high waisted pants. That other guy is wrong. Lengthens your legs a lot. Idk about okeys cuts for shorter guys they look a little long sometimes, but for sure high waisted pants at minimum.

Ever seen a kid at a wedding? His parents throw a little shrunken down suit on him. It's boxy and loose and silly looking. It's cute as hell on that kid, but a full cut suit gives a childish vibe on a shorter man.

My brother, respectfully, what you are wearing is more of a corporate look. From a stylish perspective, it doesn't stand out. You stand out because of your physique. When I put on a uniform, my objective is to stand out from the rest of the crowd. To have on the best uniform in the joint from shoes to head. Black men naturally have a better physique than other racists. So we look better in a uniform. But what happens when you're in a location where everyone one can dress and have your physique? Now! What separates you? I does this. I don't care what situation you put me in, I'm going to be the best dressed overall in the spot. Facts!
Every time I watch these reels I get the feeling that he is not thinking about people that are shorter than average. If you are short and wear such a long coat, you will look like a little boy with his fathers coat on.

Well it is a BBC show about a real gang in Birmingham in the early 20’s, whatching a man rise to power from ambition. A lot of fashion items from that period are presented there like overcoats, suits, tuxedos, hats, but in the end its a history based show. Main character played by Cillian Murphy.
