This "happiest music" also about measles breaking out, boat sinking, being the last survivor etc. But that's just one of those things that make Irish music so fascinating.
If I had to use one single word to describe the Dubliners, Ronnie Drew, The Pouges and Shane-and Irish music and the Irish in general I can only say "Fun!" love the Irish-they can make a party out of anything and everything! :)
I'm an Englishman who worked in an Irish bar in Northern England for about 5/6 months and was introduced to the Pogues, Dubliners and the Fureys while i was there and have loved the music ever since fantastic bands and brilliant music!
What I love about this video is the complete lack of barriers between generations - The Pogues and The Dubliners have lost any idea of age in Music! Love it!
Reminds me a little of how the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a bunch of California longhairs, was embraced in the early '70s by a bunch of super old school country singers, because those California boys had the chops (check out "Soldier's Joy" from the first "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album. Solid playing all around).
Rarely does one see so much talent on one stage. Much love from a humble Southern Irishman (I am of Euro/Mexican descent). God Bless Ronny Drew, Phil Chevron and any one of this ensemble who have gone onto the next life. Authentic Joy this is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Very true. Now Shane Magowan is gone to join dearly lamented Kirsty MacColl in the Heavenly choir. Wow what a gig that must have been. Light of Heaven to you Shane. May God bless you Kirsty😢😢❤❤
Im from Serbia but hell I find the Irish music so sweet for an ear that I cant find the right words to describe it Its such a great song and big greeting from Serbia to ya all brother Irish people :)
Mega Deni13 good day to you too :) there are sure wonderfull people out there in those lands with great melodic music that have retained true values :)
Tomas Icks Say again please. My hearing is not what it used to be I´m afraid. Shane blew his tin flute in me ear you see, and it´s never been the same after that.:D
My life's favourite memory features the Pogues, albeit indirectly. I was lost in Amsterdam and stumbled across an Irish pub. I wasn't sure about going in, it was too dark inside to see how busy it was and stuff, but a dude was standing by the door who was ridiculously friendly and welcoming and said it's a nice place, so I went in, sat in a corner of this dark as hell bar, drinking an Irish coffee while the Pogues blasted from the stereo. I've never known peace quite like it
@@stumbling Sorry for the disappointment lol but in my life I don't experience peace very often (mental illness and PTSD prevents such moments for the most part) so.. yeah, one of my happiest memories, just chilling :)
I don't know how but these ireland musics bring a mix of good feelings, like funning, energy, laughing and i start to want dance, clap. This must be the magic that the ireland ciizens say that their land has celtic's existence.
I don't know how anyone can't love this. The singers characters are so distinctive. That guys eyes and the other guys teeth and polo top and voices like they don't have a care in world.
This video is just a monument ! ... in my country, it had been censored on the TV: Shane is drunk and shot as usual, drinking and smoking on stage ... Ronnie fabulous as usual (we miss you Ronnie-Daddy) clothed as a prince ... the meeting of two generations, a melting pot ... and the brewerage was good ! IRISH ROVER
Stewart Nicol as BILLY CONNOLLY we took him a bottle of white wine on the first Sunday he was in. Frank Murray blew his top. Shane drank the wine. Mad days.
Hats off to all you Irish folk. I mean it. History has dealt you guys SO many black eyes, and you've suffered SO much injustice and misfortune, and yet you guys always seem to be able to create joy. Whether The Pogues or U2 or Glen Hansard--or a slew of other wonderful musicians, not to mention your extraordinary heritage of some of the finest writers in the history of the English language--you guys manage to remind us all that life is a gift. This great version of a great song is just another example of this.
Ah, yes, Stiff Little Fingers. My bad, my bad. I honestly just put up U2 as the kind of "official big time Irish band." They really aren't a huge favorite of mine. I do, however, stick to my guns about Glen Hansard and The Pogues.
I like U2, at least the old stuff. If you don't think The Joshua Tree is a masterpiece, there's something wrong with you. It's pure Irish rock n roll with lots of intellect, thought and deep allegorical meanings to the music, along with political commentary and even religious meanings.
This song and it's lyrics are what I love about the Irish. They were not carrying anything of great value i.e gold, diamonds or expensive drink. Just a cargo of old junk! But worth singing a fantastic song about. God Bless em!
Amazing upbeat Irish folk song! The Foggy Dew is my favorite of the Dubliners, with Sinead O'Connor on vocals. (She is a genius with the bravery and voice of an angel.)
There was old Ronnie Drew Who had drunk none too few Of the finest of spirits and wine And beside him Shane Mac Who was known to knock back Thirty-five beers and say "I feel fine".

The punk rock of Irish folk music, fuck yes! :D
Shane MacGowan! It's easy for pretty boys like him to make it in the music industry, doors just open for them. Not so easy for us plain looking guys.
Shane macgowan and pretty boy do not belong in the same sentence
From Zimbabwe to the Irish people , this is so Sweetie for my ears
AWE SOMES GUYS iyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh
is there anything better than seeing Pogues & Dubliners all 15 on stage? pure Irish!!!
god bless Ronnie Drew

Wish Luke Kelly had lived long enough to record this with the Pogues. Would have made the greatest double A side ever with this song.
Yes - perhaps greater even than Penny Lane/Strawberry Field Forever.
Ronnie only had to open his eyes to proclaim his Irishness, never mind his mouth.
