"Hickey" was an amazing villain. His turn was very unexpected for me, I never thought he was lead a mutiny, but then when it became clear that he was as much of a threat to the crew's survival as the environment and as the tuunbaq, it made so much sense.
This is great, thank you. I just finished watching The Terror last night after a week-long binge, and I was astonished by Adam's performance, in particular the scene where Hicky's being lashed - watching his face as each blow falls, tears in his eyes, and the tremors passing through his body, it was masterful. Hicky made me really uncomfortable, so charming, a real operator but incapable of true empathy or deep connection with others. People seem like things to be used on his way to get to where he wants to go. I know that if I were in his presence/someone like him, he'd be able to wheedle every last secret out of me and use it to his advantage. He was frightening. And that's the thing about this show, yes the tuunbaq was scary, but the true horror was what these men ended up doing to each other. A magnificent show and a superlative cast. I'll be on the look out for this actor's work in the future, and I know I'm late to the party, but I'll be recommending this to everyone!
I give Mr. Nagaitis full props for his performance. Why? Because I really, truly, wanted his character to be gone! That smile/smirk/grin is so creepy and maddening - who needs a monster when there's already one in your midst.
Brilliant memorable performance! I felt so much more to the on-screen Hickey compared to the one in the novel, the character got deeper with slightly different motivation even. Truly a highlight of the show! And I was surprised to learn that Hickey and firefighter from Chernobyl was played by the same actor. That's a range... Hope to see mr Nagaitis in many other tv shows and movies 💙
Intelligent and perceptive insight that inspired such a brilliant multifaceted performance as the Hickey character. That was an award winning level performance. 👑
Like so many others, I too just got done watching this show with my folks after a 5 day binge and we were totally gripped the entire time. And while Jared Harris may be on top billing, Adam Nagaitis oozes with sociopathic brilliance in every single scene he's in. Though the first half of the season, we as the audience can certainly deduce that Cornelius Hickey is a cunning, conniving, and utterly charming manipulator, able to talk his way out of whatever trouble he's in and already a master of the devious grin. At the same time, he immediately recognizes Silna and Tuunbaq have a supernatural connection and that certainly intrigues him. But when Captain Crozier has him lashed as a boy, a man he shared a drink and a moment with and felt he was helping by grabbing Silna, he is so betrayed and humiliated that you can see him change into something...darker, as the lashing nears the end. From then on, all of his energy goes into plotting and scheming his way to this creature. To the point that he saves the men from the carnival fire because he needs them. But when he finally has an opportunity to unleash his murderous impulses on Mr. Farr and Lieutenant Irving, he does so and with extreme savagery. And even after he's caught and about to be hanged, he maintains constant control, belittling Crozier and going on for just enough time for Tuumbaq to save him, causing the impromptu mutiny and acting as the catalyst for his devilish plan. But it's once in control of his own group that you really see Adam Nagaitis' acting brilliance shine. He has all the charm, psychopathy, and messianic complex of a cult leader, a man obsessed with himself and his aim, so sure that he will prevail, even if everyone else dies. Even while he's eating his former lover, Billy, he shows no hesitation, digust, or remorse. If anything, he looks relaxed and at peace. After they fetch Crozier and he goes to speak with Hickey, we finally know, through a series of devious grins and masterfully delivered, menacingly soft-spoken dialogue, his true intentions for the fate of the group and for Tuunbaq. The monologue Hickey gives as they call in Tuunbaq is just spellbinding. Before he gives it, he is so focused on what he's about to do that he no longer cares about anything the group says. Only what he says, what he thinks, what he feels matters, and no one will survive this ordeal except him, as he so calmly and eerily says, "You think you're going back? No...". Only then does he finally come clean and reveal that he murdered the real Cornelius Hickey and left him in Regent's Canal and took his place on the ship, with the hopes of escaping to Hawaii and leaving his undoubtedly criminal laden past behind and starting new. But now, he plans to start anew in a different way. As Adam says in the interview, "There's an answer somewhere in that bear, something he's been looking for his whole life, to go even further than just surviving." He wants to be a God. Even as the carnage is unfolding all around him, he remains steadfast and calmly cuts out his tongue and presents it to Tuumbaq. But much to his surprise and dismay, the creature rejects him and his offering. And it is only in that one fleeting moment, with his arm clenched in the jaws of the demon man-bear and right before he's ripped in half, that we finally see a look of shock, fear, and TERROR on his face. And so ends the story of one of the best TV villains in recent memory and he wouldn't be remembered as such were it not for the finesse, subtlety, and sheer brilliance of Adam Nagaitis' acting skill. Absolutely outstanding work in an outstanding series. There have been and may be more renditions of "The Terror", but the first season will always be the best. Just like how the first season of "True Detective" is undoubtedly the best. Awesome stuff!! Recommending this show to everybody now!
@sharkboyben41 Adam is not on social media, it's an unofficial account. Anyway, nothing better than seeing people appreciate his work, means the world.
@@Adam_Nagaitis haha I knew that! Just meant great work making this interview compilation! This is a great watch all on it's own! Always love hearing an actor's take on his character
i loved the nuances of Nagaitis acting in the Terror. Just captivated every scene. The scenes on the ship, the sharp and insightful observations all implied, non-verbally. Such a good actor. And the character. Yes Simmons has gone right-wing woke wacko in recent years but jeebus could the man write a character. In many shows, as the view you sit there yelling (internally) about poor choices and missed opportunities. The Hickey character is the character smart enough, but unable to see the bigger picture, to see all the little clues and signs all over the ship and with its crew. Hence why he was several steps ahead of everyone. His experiences prior had shown he was no longer weighed down by King & Country (making the men sing was a great reflection of his very contempt for nationalism), not held by conventions of even brotherhood or even love Hickey showed us the purity of survival. Hickey the consummate survivor thrown into a situation where, by circumstances, he unfolds, as the actor describes, his full potential is released. Sadly for a relatively short period of time. He even ran circles around Crozier. I kinda wish the bear hadn't attacked the camp during the hanging because I was utterly sure that Hickey was going to talk his way out of being hung, exposing the poisoned rations (failure of command & Admiralty) to do due diligence. I almost wished he gained control of the tupilaq (the actual spelling of Tuunbaq) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupilaq which is why Silna (Lady Silence) produces the carving as 'making of a tupilaq started most often at night, in secrecy' and is an integral part of the Inuit shaman rituals. Hickey never witnessed this part hence why Hickey ultimately failed to control the creature as cutting one's tounge off was only one part of the ritual. that said all of the performances are amazing. I almost wished they'd do a prequel where we see Crozier and Blankey (my favourite of the entire show) in their antarctic expedition with Ross. My gosh that would be an amazing story. The forshadowing you could do re for the The Terror, oh man that would be great.

Fascinating insights, Hickey is the best screen villain I’ve seen in ages

He’s so pookie in this show (by which I ofc mean he’s a badass)
