It only lasts a moment but the part where Sam reveals that Coach has passed away is really quite moving. A nice sensitive way to deal with the sad fact that actor Nicholas Colosanto died before the fourth season began. And Ted Danson's delivery is so good.

Well said. That moment is very moving - and Ted Danson delivers the line so well. I heard that towards the end, as Nicholas Colasanto was struggling with his illness, he hid little notes around the set with reminders of his lines. After he’d gone the other cast members used to find them unexpectedly during filming. So when Sam says ‘I’d like to think he’s still around’ it reflects the fact that, in a small way, Nick Colasanto / Ernie Pantuso still was.

It's very reminiscent of Only Fools And Horses, which actually had a similar tragic retool from losing a cast member, around the same time and also in its fourth season. Both have sad reveals about the character dying with the actor, still with plenty oddball jokes, but affectionately done, since it just wouldn't be those characters if it wasn't.
In both cases, I only knew of the 'Coach' and 'Grandad' eras of the shows a long while after seeing the contemporary episodes and it later hit what had happened. It does show how well both cases managed to work around it without jumping the shark, but also sadder knowing what could have been and how a likeable star missed out on the show hitting its peak, so I appreciate them still showing poignant affection for them afterwards and how they wished they could have been around for the rest of it.
Hell I'm sure many fans would have loved a universe where Coach and Woody somehow met.

What an incredible scene. They have to pay tribute to Coach, who never got a farewell episode, introduce his replacement and make it funny, touching and respectful at the same time - and they pull it off in four minutes. By the end, you know Woody is going to work out just fine.

Grandad to Uncle Albert in Only Fools And Horses (also for sad real life reasons) is another impressive one. I think one key here with both is how they connect the new characters to the old. I feel like this in bad execution would feel forced, the stock "new character that was always related but never mentioned before", but it helps in making them empathetic to the loss of the original, that they're not here just to take their place and make you forget about them, they loved them too and know the shoes they have to fill.

Woody is just so sweet & adorable I just smiled the whole introduction. Man cheers had discovered so many stars. Best ensemble cast ever on a tv show. Very sweet nod to " coach " & the producers said they wanted a younger version of coach. Like the light bulb is on but a little dim. I wonder if midwesterners who are the heart & are the bulk of a shows audience since they are the entire country except for the coasts mind that in cheers & golden girls the two people from the midwest were stereotyped as very sweet but dim. Like rose from Minnesota & of course woody from Indiana. Carson had that enormous audience on nbc bc he was a born & bred midwesterner & that's who gave him that huge audience, then leno. The talk show people now have abysmal ratings bc everything they do bashes middle american ideals. They think they are just playing to nyc & l.a. & once u get an or 2 north of nyc it's like the midwest. Hell ny touches ohio. Buffalo probably does not even feel like ny , they have their own football team & nobody in southern ny likes them. It's all giants & jets who actually play in Jersey. I grew up right outside the city in westchester & anyone north if there was called a " hick " by people I grew up with. NYC & westchester & long island literally should just sever from the rest of ny bc they are like night & day.

I actually did expect it with Tom Hanks - perhaps not to 'winning an Oscar' degree but still becoming very well known and famous.
He was very funny, sarcastically OR straight 'ha-ha' funny, when I first saw him on Bosom Buddies.
Good in Bachelor Party and then became a st🌟r with BIG.
I didn't follow, or know Bradley Cooper as well - just that he was quite appealing to the ladies.

LOL! Congratulations Woody on your entrance into the Star Wars franchise. And there was a banner that was used on Everybody Loves Raymond that said "Congratulations Woody" when it was supposed to say "Congratulations Robert". It was a mistake that one of the elderly characters made in that show/episode. It is possible that the banner was originally used on Cheers for Woody Boyd. ???

Coach died 2 days before my Grandpa! Talk about a couple of blows back to back!
Don't you know who this is?
He use to be one of the
    best pitchers in baseball.
    Samuel "Mayday" Malone.
    I coached this kid
    down in pawtucket in
    double a ball, and up
    here with the Red Sox.
He was one of the best
relievers ever to play the game.
    Take it easy, coach.
No, I mean it. He was the very
best, as sure as the earth is round.
    You don't believe that, coach.
No, I never used to believe it
Sam, till I saw those pictures
    from the space shuttle.
