  • Interview Expert and Journalist Andrew Gold reacts to Communication Professor Alex Lyon's look at Tom Cruise's meltdown in his interview with 60 Minutes Australia's Peter Overton. As the conversation crosses boundaries, Cruise pushes back. Was he rude or justifiably assertive? I believe there is a lot of background information and context that the professor doesn't know about, and might shape his views.

The interviewer was definitely wrong in many respects. The "unspoken rule" you refer to, in this case, is being be wielded just to dig for tawdry bits. The interviewer absolutely demonstrated zero interest in the movie project and if I was Tom, I'd be inclined to walk out on the merits of that line of question alone. As for the Scientology bit - the "request" for a 4-hour Scientology bender opens the door to press Tom on the religion. All in all, frankly the interviewer came off like an ass with an opportunity to increase his reach, and Tom vacillates between rightfully indignant actor and vehement Scientology apologist. The ok interviewer was also overly interested in Tom's sex life, which was just cringey, Scientology or otherwise.

Not clear what Peter was doing here, but I remember when they first split up, Tom tried to smear Nichole, claimed the marriage had been over months before it apparently had (to affect her rights in the property settlement) and, according to her, refused to give a reason while claiming publicly "she knows what she did". Peter may have been trying to pin him down from pivoting from Nichole being a wonderful wife, to an implied bad person.

I think you’re right. When you have fame and fortune, you have made yourself a public figure, and people want to know about your personal life. Tom is showing us how Scientology teaches him to treat people. It’s a power-over dynamic where the toughest and meanest make it to the top of the hill. My perception of Scientology is that it’s extremely toxic and shouldn’t have a religious tax exemption.

You are right. They practice this in their sessions when they study scientology. They have a way to measure the intensity / correctness of your response to any bizarre questioning / scenario and it's called Tone Scale. Sometimes you have to react or behave intensely and loudly (Tone Scale 40). Other times they train you with "bullbaiting" by sitting for hours and saying outrageous, offensive or making comments about your personal attributes and you must not react at all. Talk about cult-like conditioning. Not to mention it's abusive.

There's an added aspect of just how badly Cruise and/or his handlers misjudged the culture that is prevalent in Australia (and New Zealand where I am more familiar with it) with regard to hierarchies. Even in professional settings, hierarchies are flattened in how individuals interact. This is a result of settlers fleeing the UK and the abhorrent nature of the class system there.
In many respects, to Overton this is just two guys in a room having a chat, so he can and will talk about whatever he wants. Note how he interacts with Kidman, and how she reciprocates the same behavior and in some ways seems relieved she can drop a certain level of pretense about "status".
To Cruise however, nobody ever talks to him the way Overton does, not on movie sets and most definitely not in Scientology. He is completely unprepared for it. The fact that Cruise was married to an Australian for a decade and was still so oblivious to this aspect of the culture not only speaks volumes about his failing in this interview, but also about his relationship with Kidman.

Andrew you are so on the ball with your take on this interview. I find it hard to believe that this psychologist saw Tom Cruise as just being 'assertive' and 'taking back control'. The man was clearly livid and, in my opinion, he totally lost control. I think it was a really good look at Cruise in action and letting his guard down because his narcissistic, controlling personality got the better of him. I'm sorry. I don't know him personally but I just can't stand the sight of him. The only movie I have ever watched with him in it was 'Rainman' and I think the character he played must have come easily to him as it was like a carbon copy of the kind of person he seems to be - a control freak with massive anger management issues. Thanks 'Andrew' for the video lol.

I do think the man's a fine actor - but I wonder if some of that talent is the by-product of having to learn how to come across as vaguely normal? I'm starting to think he's had to act every day of his life to pretend to even be human. Because the more I hear behind the scenes stories, and his action of separating his children from his first wife, the more I tend to think there's no smoke without fire and this fellow's a complete and utter nightmare.

I think it was the fact that the interviewer asked such a weird trick question. Who the hell asks someone whether his EX, someone he recently divorced, is "the love of his life?" Andrew, Thank you for bringing in more of "the back story" regarding this interview! When I first saw it, I thought it very odd. I surmised that it was good old Tom Cruise being controlling Tom Cruise. "I AM IN CONTROL!" But learning this back story CHANGES IT ALL!
Here's my take on it - My firm opinion now is that Peter Overton, as a kind childhood friend of Nicole K, took it upon himself to professionally enter Tom's Scientology Den to protect and honor both Nicole and Australia. I also believe he was working to wrest some semblance of a conciliatory posture from Tom toward Nicole.
But Peter was a sitting duck....he is a NICE GUY (you are too😊). He has journalistic talent, but I believe you could have given him a lesson or two in British cheekiness😄
His mistake is that he thought he could go toe to toe with crazy Tom. I believe Tom was warning him with the scientology indoctrination attempt, but Peter didn't really comprehend. Even though they both speak English, they DON'T speak the same LANGUAGE! Crazy Tom speaks SCIENTOLOGY ENGLISH! AGGRESSION! PERIOD! Peter - speaks relaxed Outback Aussie English. (no worries). I think he got as worked up as he could, but he wasn't a match for the AGGRESSIVE BULLY!
As a senior female, I recognize "pissing" contests quickly, and this definitely was one. Crazy TOM did what all aggressive people do - Won the Battle but Lost the War. He LOST NICOLE. And he is probably still CLUELESS. Peter PRESERVED HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH NICOLE and THE BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT OF AUSTRALIA, by STANDING FORWARD and TAKING THE HIT.

She had so much on him and Scientology that he shut up and signed the custody issues on her terms People often think she had a rock solid prenup for her own financial benefit. She did. Turns out she didn't need it as security because she was around long enough to know a). she had enough crap on him and scientology and b) she def didn't want her kid alienated from her OR expose to scientology as she had a relationship with Conor and Isabella Cruise, Nicole Kidman's children with Tom. She saw exactly what could happen, and perhaps even reached out to Nicole (perhaps through lawyers or surreptitiously). Katie's dad is a high powered divorce lawyer which also helped in her prenup and her divorce planning. She had a perfect exit strategy and forced a settlement of issues regarding Suri. Also, it wouldn't be the first time a soon to be ex-wife talked to an ex-wife and learned even more than she already knew. Good for Katie!

Far too many celebrities treat the media like a personal press secretary. The fact that Tom is there to promote his movie does not mean that Peter is obliged to give him free publicity. Tom certainly has a right to refuse to answer personal questions; but, he has no right to lecture like an uptight nanny.
The fact is that celebrities are making a living by promoting themselves to the public, by acting out the public's dreams and fantasies, by catering to those dreams, etc. We get to decide what we want to know about them. When anyone - private citizen or public celebrity - is in public, we just don't have the same expectation of privacy as we do at home. A journalist has a job to do, and that job does not entail pandering to celebrities.

Get real. The media has always played along with famous actors because they want the interview. It's a symbiotic relationship most of the time. Actors can often choose who they want to interview them. They can pick questions or topics they don't want to be asked or they won't get the interview.
Someone mentioned the Austrailian probably thought it would be his last interview and wasn't worried about the future so he asked whatever he wanted, good for him. He's the one who had to sit through a 4 hr. plus scientology whatever.

TC established dominance by taking up 4 hours of the journalist’s time. He also scored points with Scientology by attempting to recruit someone who would be a very valuable spy on Nicole and the Cruz children.
By bringing up the 4 hour commitment requirement the interviewer is publicizing the tactic. Which isn’t a desired outcome for Scientology. TC likely didn’t get any attaboys for his results from this interview. I’m betting he got coached how to handle this kind of thing in future.
The direct stare and name use is very dominant behaviour. I think it’s TC telling the interviewer that TC is firmly in charge. Which he is not. There has to be exchange or there is little value for the interviewer.
The interviewer, I believe, is trying to get TC to say something personal that the interviewer already knows, but can’t say directly himself. If he can get Cruise to say it, the interviewer has a great story. So it’s worth the risk. And also, I bet, the interviewer is a little angry at the hoops he had to jump through to get on camera FaceTime with TC.
And. Details of the personal involvement of TC with his Australian children are intensely interesting to Aussies (I bet). But that is a minefield for TC because he’s not allowed contact. But I bet he has been told he cannot say his religion separates him from his children.
So the interviewer is definite threat to TC.
This isn’t a normal interview. It’s a fencing match with a lot unsaid on both sides.
“Put your manners back in!” Is rude. It’s not polite. It’s not shouting. But it might as well be. It’s said forcefully with dominant chin jut and sociopathic eye contact.

If Tom Cruise did not like the line of questioning, he was being asked, he should have simply said, "Peter, I really do not want to talk about my ex-wife and our relationship. It's a new day, and I am here to promote my movie." Pure and simple - instead of getting into the controlling dynamics which made him look like a jerk. Tom Cruise, clearly, is controlling. He could have ended things without looking like an alpha male.

I do think Peter crossed a line, but the way TC acted was way out of line too, he is an aggressive little gnome and its shows, he could easily have said he didn't want to answer such questions but had to retaliate in a condescending manner, couldn't help his narcissistic self, in my opinion he lost his control and was trying his best to get it back 🙄

I wonder what Peter and Nicole used to talk about over the back garden fence. That portion of the video was the most interesting imo; for one thing it suggests Nicole's branch of the family lived a fairly understated suburban life considering they are part of world's sixth-biggest landowning Kidman family. Nevertheless, her child psychologist father was highly connected among elite circles and his death from "suicide" over a decade ago in Singapore while on the run for charges relating to... well, take a guess... spared the Australian prosecutors having to do a full and potentially very thorny investigation into those elite circles. Now I'm not saying there was anything going on in those circles or that NK's dad was a procurer, but it would be a good one to look into. Uncovering evidence - circumstantial or better - of a covert elite cult would surely be a greater prize than finding further flaws in the already discredited one that Tom Cruise is part of!

Are you talking about Fiona Barnett??? Antony Kidman was in Singapore visiting his other daughter Antonia, who lived there at the time. Also, I think she befriended that LA actor who was likely suicided a few years ago (by criminal talent whackers at a guess) Being so on the fringe and liable to lead one into such gigantic rabbit holes, neither has crossed my mind for quite a few years.
Do you know whether A. Kidman left a suicide note and gave reasons for his decision? Thanks

Tom: I wanna get married again.
Peter: You do? And have more kids?
Tom: Yes absolutely. I hope to have another little girl that I can ignore.
I agree Andrew. By the same token that Cruise said "you didn't have to; you could've said no (in regard to spending 4 hrs in scientology), Tom could have just said "no comment." I think he sees himself as the tough guy when it's easy to see how easily he is whittled down to tantrum status. Btw, what does "put your manners back in" mean?
I think Tom Cruise, for all of his action films and supposed good acting, is really not a smart guy. He looked utterly foolish there when he could've kindly asked Peter to not cross his boundaries about personal matters.
Honestly, he needs shock therapy. 🤣😄

HOLY SHIT! Never heard the song before, but dead set, Scio is the third party in the friendship/relationship. Even the line about him hearing she's building a little house in the desert could be referring a desolate endeavor OR perhaps she joined the SEA ORG where there is a compound in the Californian dessert - the little house may refer to her life (a little life in the compound in the desert). I wonder if she did go Clear, or if she woke up and blew.

Man, oh man. Tom is really hit and miss for me. Of course, we could talk for hours about his acting resume alone. Regarding interviews, pretty much all actors and actresses experience at least one in their career where they’re not showing their best face; but it is interesting that two of Tom’s most unhinged exchanges had to do with Scientology directly. In each, he really leaves you with the impression that this is a man who is accustomed to getting his way. Yet, I think he stops just short of coming off as a total bully.
One redeeming moment for him, at least in my eyes, was his COVID rant in 2020 or 2021. If you’ve not heard it in full, I highly recommend you check it out. In it, he’s really letting the staff members who are working on his movie set have it over their failure to abide by the COVID guidelines. And the stance he takes is that he is assuming all of the risk and liability for the health of everyone on set, so when the workers can’t respect the guidelines, he considers that to be a personal affront. He goes on to say that so many responsibilities are riding on his shoulders, such as keeping everyone working and making paychecks during the pandemic. It’s actually a rather touching “speech” he gives.
But man, he really is an intense dude. He seems like one of those people who can make you feel an inch tall if you piss him off.

if by "speech" you mean screaming tirade, then yeah. I guess.
the fact that he couldn't get his point across without cursing and screaming says everything. that's not the way normal people communicate.

    • @soyburglar1878
      @soyburglar1878 Рік тому

      @Amy
“Like” it? No. Understand it, absolutely. But he’s not upset because of his own personal fear of catching COVID. He wanted to keep his teams and fellow actors working and getting paychecks at a time when so much of the industry was falling apart and people just weren’t working. It seemed very important to him to abide by the guidelines that would allow everyone to continue to do their jobs. And yeah, I respect that.
As far as him cursing…come on, we’re not children here. Some people curse, some don’t. But for those who have that tendency, it’s certainly not because they’re not intelligent enough to use other words. In fact, studies show that people who curse regularly tend to be smarter than those who intentionally refrain.
