Great review, and the board suits your style. Got a 6'8" Big Baron a few weeks back, and it's fast becoming my favourite board. Just more fun than smaller boards, in a lot of conditions we see.
I’ve been surfing a 6-2 Big Barron on the North Shore this winter after I tore up my shoulder surfing Sunset in October. Needed more paddle assistance and this did the trick. Great paddle power and surfs amazingly well even in well overhead. Having move fun on this than my short boards. BTW your reviews are appreciated. Aloha…
5 months after shoulder surgery at 67 years young. Looking for more paddling power and some help popping up. Gonna check this out at my local shop that carries these.
High performance mid lengths are insanely good and you're going to see more and more of them around. Those young guys that were givin Wooly shit, they will finish up falling in love with them.
Rode high performance doing airs tricks blabla for 20 years, got a single fin a few years ago and 1st surf hated it. Ended up being my only board after I snapped a couple só rode it for a month. Got obsessed with it, 2 years later it’s all I want to ride, especially when over 4ft and down the line or hollow
The board suits as your not a little guy and it smooths out your style. The volume is evenly distributed over its length and the pulled down rails help give this twin some traction and great projection down the line. 6-8 and 38 litres is not a lot, its barely a mid length which start at 7-0 +. I think dropping down to a 6-4 to achieve more looseness might defeat the flow and drive that you have with the 6-8. I'd say that the longer versions would go well also.
Hello! Bit late to the party but looking at buying one of these. I live in NZ an all the big Barron's are made in Thailand! You ozzy lads get the Australian made ones. Is there much difference between the two??
@@WoolyTV Just picked up the 7' yesterday in FCS with the same fins you rode, and it worked sick in my small local reef break - coming from a shortboard, this was my first midlength, and I'm already addicted to the glide and projection off the long rail like you mentioned! So stoked on your surfing, I feel like you could rip on any board! Thanks for the excellent videos!!
You shredded, especially compared to you riding the seaside and beyond. I tried the too fish but I can't handle the looseness and speed, how do you think a middie twin likrle this compares? I'd love to get the big barron as I find my seaside and beyond a bit stiff, but I am concerned that another twinnie would be too tricky for me.
The Big Baron holds in really well with the pintail. It has a lot more hold than most of the other twins Ive ridden. Still my favourite mid Ive reviewed.
@@MarcRademacher I have the Chilli MStrength in 6'6, fun board, would be curious for a comparison on Big baron with Ian.I also got the Middy in 5'10 in epoxy, so much fun as quad, ride it way more than I would of thought- agreed with you Marc!
@@rwatty7682 Never tried the Big Baron, but I brought a JS El Baron in 6‘4. I thought it would be good for bigger waves when it starts to get to big for the Middy. Never surfed the Middy again! The El Baron is absolutely fantastic in the bigger stuff but for me it works well in smaller waves too! Think of a step up that paddles really well while having enough rocker for big and late drops. I don’t like flat rockered boards that need to be nursed in order to keep the nose from poking. Hence zero interest for the big Baron…
Hey mate, just looking for some advice around sizing. I'm looking to step down from an 8 foot longboard and start transitioning into something a bit shorter. Your review of the board sounds awesome and definitely keen on a big baron just not sure which size is right for me. I'm 6'0 and 73kg, was looking at either the 6'4 or the 6'6 board, any recommendations between the two? cheers
awesome review and love the combination of glide and performance you showed. I am exactly your size. As an all arounder for san diego/lowers and for beach breaks with some push from waist to shoulder and reefs with size above chest high to 1 ft overhead would you prefer the 6’4 or the 6’8. JS has two different versions of the Baron that come out to 38 liters. 6”4, 20 3/4, 2 3/4 ,at 38.7 liters and 6’8,20 3/4 , 2 5/8. I surf just fine but not like you!! thanks for your advice.
Hey wooly, how did the deck hold up in the PE construction? I've heard they're a bit soft. Would you recommend the PE or if you had the option go with PU? Thanks mate.
@Craig Phillips hi mate. The newer PE are definitely heavier and stronger than the early one like the demo I had. If you are worried about deck dents then maybe a custom PU one is a better way to go for you. 🤙

Great review on the Big baron Wooly...I'm considering getting one for my local beach break at Maroubra to lift my wave count, and also as a travel board. I usually ride boards between 5'8 - 5'10 and my volume is in the 29-31L range. I'm 5'7 tall and weigh 70kgs, intermediate level. Still like to keep my boards maneuverable but also looking at increasing my wave count!! Tossing up between the 6'4 in 34.4L or the 6'4 in 38.7L. Any advice mate?
Hi Woodley, great vid, 6’8 seaside and beyond or 6’8 big Barron, video of BB indicates speed maintained through turns and projection, although everyone tells me ya can’t beat a Quad for flow and speed. I realise waves are always different. what would stay in your Quiver between the two. Surfing predominately beaches. Thanks for sharing your detailed review.
Hi Wooly, I bought the big baron partly off the back of your review. Love it so far! Thanks! I was thinking about getting the Creatures Bag too! What length is it?
Hello, just saw your video and i an keen to buy big baron....I have already a black baron ans I have a lot of fun...My question is. What biard size? I AM 5'8'' tall and weight 70 kilos
Hi mate, I have just landed a CI mid to review, its a littel more traditional and heavier than the Big Baron. The JS is so loose, light and free and can almost be ridden like a shortboard where I think the CI mid will be more of a cruiser. Stay tuned for the review in the next month or two.
Hi mate, awesome review once again! Just wondering how you went with duck diving the big baron with that extra volume? Looking for something to take out in bigger swells up to 8ft. And really like the looks of this one. Keen to know your thoughts! Cheers mate
Thinking of getting a Seaside and beyond or a Big barron what do you think the surfing feeling between the two are, is one better in one condition then the other,Cheers.
Ok, I knew this question was coming! The way I surf, the Big Baron suited me better. Im sure for others the S&B will be better suit to them. I liked both but I think for me and the waves I surf, I would go the Big Baron.
I’ve never used it in hollow waves so can’t really answer that one. It does have plenty of hold with the pin tail. I’m not sure it would be my go to for serious waves. But I’m a little old school, I’ve seen guys standing in some pretty good caves riding twins in the NW. 🤙
I've seen someone who got this board at the JS shop here in Bali. It was a 6'0" I remember and he was surfing with that board in Padang Padang few days ago during the big swell. they said that they will surf in mentawai and dessert point
Hey Wooly, great review - thank's for that! I am a rather big guy 6'3 (192cm) and 95kg (210lb). Normally I am on a 6'2 short board (34l) but I am now looking for something with more volume and better gliding for every day use at our local beachies. Do you think the bigger version of the 6'6 (42l) would be a good choice if I am looking for an easy paddle but also some responsiveness and easy turns in the pocket? Or too much volume?
Hi mate I usually ride my everyday boards around 6’0” to 6’1” and 33 to 34L. The one I rode here was 6’8” and 38.5L. I liked the longer rail line of the 6’8”. I would think either of the 6’8”s or the 6’6” 42.1L would do the job for you. But if it was me I would grab the same I ride here as it went sooooo good 🤙
Hi Wooly I've got the BB in 6'8 in 38.5 litres and really love it. I love it so much I'm looking to get another one but shorter so I can make snappier turns. What size would you recommend? I use to have a 6'2 Hayden but found it too short. I'm thinking the 6'6 in 36.8 litres. Any advice appreciated. Cheers
Hi mate I was actually thinking about getting a shorter one so this is something I have looked at! If it was my I would go for the 6’4” at the same volume as the 6’8”. This would give the same positives as the 6’8” but a shorter turning arc. Hope that helps
Love the reviews mate! Awesome content and informative, keep it up! Have you ridden the Firewire Sunday, if you have how does it compare in Perth/peel surf?
Thanks mate! I havent ridden a Sunday as yet - having a hard time trying to get my hands on one. We had a couple in the shop but the sold really fast. One of my mates grabbed one and he is loving surfing it locally.
Wooly, do you feel after riding it a few times the size was right for you? Would you go down (or up)? Just trying to dial in the right size for me. I’m 74kg intermediate short boarder 179cm tall riding a rad ripper 5’7”atm.
Hi mate, I thought the 6’8” was perfect for how I wanted to surf it. Really depends what you want to get out of the board. Smaller would be easier to throw around but I wanted to ride it as a mid length.
@@WoolyTV Thanks! Have you had a chance to ride any other sizes of the Big Baron? Noticed they also do shrunk down dims where you get 38l in a 6'4 .. or 35l in a 6'2... I now feel I might need a big baron quiver !
thanks mate. How does big baron works on small days kinda of wave? So far I've been loving my chilli middy 6'2 20 3/4 2 1/2at 35L. Been eyeing on the big baron for quite sometime now. I'm around 167cm and 68kg, what size should I go for? Looking at 6.4 at 38.7L or 6.7 at 42.1L big baron? Intermediate surfer here
@@Eidref102 if you like the Chilli mid, stick to the DIMs close to that. If you have a look on the little right I was surfing, you can get a read on how it looks in the small stuff. Mine was a 6’8” so the shorter ones will have a better turning circle :)
@@WoolyTV The EN fin was good however I tried the Britt Merrick Twin and its better. It had more hold thru turns especially on a bigger waves. The EN I use it on the Baron Flyer. Thanks for the recommendations are review you did on both boards. . :-)
Cheers Wooly ....yep agree with ya " best mid length on the planet " i got the 5'10 ..and it surfs better than all my HP boards....because im hitting 50 , but the board is so easy to do high speed carves ! holds the line ... love it.
Hey Wooly, I’m tossing up either 6’8 a or 7’0 as a new addition crusy mid length that can still cut. Intermediate, 175cm/80kg Currently riding Xero 6’1 in easy dims at 39l Surf Noosa, Bendalong south coast and Torquay, Vic Thought the 6’8 would be ideal but lower ltrs than currently riding on the Xero. Thoughts?
Love your reviews, watched this one a few times your surfing looks awesome on this board man. I'm looking at one of these and torn between 6'4 and 6'8.. I'm 5'10 ~77kg surfing mostly weak beach break thigh to head high. My daily board is a 5'11 Pyzalien 2 stock dims around 30L. Any thoughts on how I should choose 6'4 vs 6'8?
Great review. Would there be much difference performance wise do you think between the 6’4” 38L or 6’8” 38L? Currently riding a Machado Moonbeam 6’0” 35L.
Hi mate The longer rail on the 6'8" will make it surf differently to the 6'4". If you watch the review you will see that the board turns on a wider arch due to the length. The short one will turn a little tighter. Really depends what you are after in the board. Cheers
Hi mate, it really depends what you want the board to do and what size you normally ride. I wanted this as a mid length so thats why I went the 6'8" - 38L. My normal boards are usually 6'0" and 33-34L. Which ever way you decide to go just know that this model has very low rails.
Hey Wooly - thanks for the great review! My daily board is a 5'9 Seaside / 37.3L, looking to get a mid-length that can handle some bigger surf / overhead conditions + paddle in easier than the Seaside. I'm 180cm (5'11) and weigh 77 kilos (170) - do you think the 6'8 / 38.5 Big Baron is the right size? Was thinking of sizing up to the 6'8 / 42.5L...thanks
You were surfing so good on this thing and going so fast I ended up buying a 6.8 right after I saw this vid. Just took it out yesterday and holy shit did it live up to the expectations I had. Can’t believe how fast it goes but also how loose it was. I was switching off with my 6.0 32 liter thruster which I though I was doing some pretty good turns on but my friend said my turns actually looked better on this 6.8! So stoked!
Hey mate I'm 74kg and 175cm, 37yo good surfer but about to have neck surgery (been outta the water for 12 months with bulging discs). Thinking about one of these as a fun way to get back into it without the pressure I put on myself when on a shortboard (but still want to be able to do some turns, throw it around a bit, take it out in heavier surf). Recommendations for length? I'm torn between 62B and 64A dims at the mo but not sure if I'm even in right ballpark. Cheers
@@WoolyTV ha have a stupid amount of them, JS monstabox @ 5'10 (sold my 5'9 which I regret), lost driver round tail @ 5'11 as a semi step up, lost rocket 5'7, performance twin fish @ 5'7 etc etc. All around 28L for day to day boards, go up slightly for step ups or proper grovellers
@@davewoulfe5291 I guess the equivalent to what I was on would put you on the 6’4”. I loved the 6’8” and that was 8” longer and 5L more than my ‘normal’ boards. I use to have a 6'2 Hayden but found it too short. I'm thinking the 6'6 in 36.8 litres. Any advice appreciated. Cheers
Hi mate
I was actually thinking about getting a shorter one so this is something I have looked at!
If it was my I would go for the 6’4” at the same volume as the 6’8”. This would give the same positives as the 6’8” but a shorter turning arc.
Hope that helps
@@WoolyTV - thankyou Wooly and congrats on the comp! Cheers
One of my mates grabbed one and he is loving surfing it locally.
great performence and sqwizing anything possible for such a board..🤙should you ride these boards same volume you use on your allrounder?
Hi mate
I went up 4-5L and 8" longer than my normal shortboard. Really depends what you want out of the board.
How does it go on backhand as a twin. I’m looking at the big barron but wondering if the CI mid is more versatile in all kinds of waves. Thoughts?
I loved it on my backhand.....
Still to this day this is my favourite mid.
Havent surfed in 5 years - 58 y old, 194cm 98kg. Thinking the 7'6 50 litre. Would that be ok?
Bigger the better to get you back in the water
do elbaron nexttttttttt
Haven’t got one as yet!
JS should give you one
come on js!!!!!!

Is a 7”6 baron a good beginner board for first timer?? I’m 140 pounds 5”6 male.
Depends what you're riding now? But yes it would be good.
Great review as always! Just got the 6’8 and loving it! What’s the name of the creatures bag?
Sick! That’s a limited cover that they did in fish and longboard only. Think is called ‘hardwear’ 🤙
@@WoolyTV Thanks! Have you had a chance to ride any other sizes of the Big Baron? Noticed they also do shrunk down dims where you get 38l in a 6'4 .. or 35l in a 6'2... I now feel I might need a big baron quiver !
@@karljakobsson2687 not yet but I have had my eyes on the higher volume 6’4”!!
Is big baron the kind of midlenght that has a shortboard feel
Yeah sure does. Still to date my favourite mid.
thanks mate.
@@WoolyTV I am eyeing probably a 6.6 big baron or maybe a 6.4
What other fins on futures works with big baron?
@@Eidref102 depends on how big you are, for me the EN is best.
@@WoolyTV thanks mate. Just got an EN 😅🙏
@@Eidref102 nice
@@WoolyTV The EN fin was good however I tried the Britt Merrick Twin and its better. It had more hold thru turns especially on a bigger waves. The EN I use it on the Baron Flyer. Thanks for the recommendations are review you did on both boards. . :-)
Hey crew! Anyone got any recommendations for futures fin choice - 6’8 Big Baron
EN for me!
@@WoolyTV Nice! have you ever tried the Rasta Twins (upright), I have some of those and my 6'8 - 38.5L on order
@@cosmoganic I haven’t but just try them first and see how they go.
@@cosmoganichow’d it go with the Rasta twin fin set?
Awesome review! How do you think it would go with a keel fin?
Thanks mate. I only ended up using the power twins. I think it might be too slippery for a tall bloke like me with the keels.
NICE MID!!!!!
Best one I’ve ridden so far
Cheers Wooly ....yep agree with ya " best mid length on the planet " i got the 5'10 ..and it surfs better than all my HP boards....because im hitting 50 , but the board is so easy to do high speed carves ! holds the line ... love it.
Yep! She is a beauty 🤙
Yeah you surfed it really well out at g, extra volume woulda gone great against the rip...lol Shane, loving the Seaside m8 👍
It goes insane!
Hey Wooly,
I’m tossing up either 6’8 a or 7’0 as a new addition crusy mid length that can still cut.
Intermediate, 175cm/80kg Currently riding Xero 6’1 in easy dims at 39l
Surf Noosa, Bendalong south coast and Torquay, Vic
Thought the 6’8 would be ideal but lower ltrs than currently riding on the Xero.
Thoughts?
Go the higher volume 6'8" that should do the trick
Mate, if you had your choice Big Baron or Sunday ?
I haven’t ridden the Sunday and I love the Big Baron so BB it is
Love your reviews, watched this one a few times your surfing looks awesome on this board man.
Hi mate
Sounds like the 6’4” might be the best way to go for you.
Great review.
Would there be much difference performance wise do you think between the 6’4” 38L or 6’8” 38L?
Currently riding a Machado Moonbeam 6’0” 35L.
Hi mate
The longer rail on the 6'8" will make it surf differently to the 6'4". If you watch the review you will see that the board turns on a wider arch due to the length. The short one will turn a little tighter. Really depends what you are after in the board.
Cheers
Nice Wooly, you had your hands on a H.I mid 6 at all?
Hi mate, we had one or two come through the shop but I havent ridden one as yet. They do look great and are super light.
I now have one on order! Stay tuned.
@@WoolyTV I have the 7'0...fantastic board!
I've been riding one for about a year.... it's an absolute weapon.
I know, I know it's a 7 footer, but !!!!
What size would you get?
I am 80 kg, 1.72m
surfed a channel twin 6'4 34.5L felt a bit too much
I was thinking of 6'2, 32.4L
Hi mate,
it really depends what you want the board to do and what size you normally ride.
I wanted this as a mid length so thats why I went the 6'8" - 38L. My normal boards are usually 6'0" and 33-34L. Which ever way you decide to go just know that this model has very low rails.
@@WoolyTV How are the low rails are effecting? I want this to catch more waves than my groveler and still be able to rip
@@88saas the rails are low so even if the board is longer and more volume than you normally ride you can still rip!!
@@WoolyTV Cheers mate
Is this an east coast board.
Hi mate. It’s works in a variety of waves.
I love mine. Nice review
Thanks
Hey Wooly - thanks for the great review! My daily board is a 5'9 Seaside / 37.3L, looking to get a mid-length that can handle some bigger surf / overhead conditions + paddle in easier than the Seaside. I'm 180cm (5'11) and weigh 77 kilos (170) - do you think the 6'8 / 38.5 Big Baron is the right size? Was thinking of sizing up to the 6'8 / 42.5L...thanks
Hi mate
The 6’8” I rode was about 5L more than my normal boards so going off that I would suggest the higher volume one for you. 🤙
@@WoolyTV thank you
How did it feel backside. Did you have to adjust your technique a lot?
Hi mate
Usually I have to nurse twins on my backhand but not this board. The tail shape really lets you surf it just like a performance board!
Cheers
Whats was your board before your surgery?
@@WoolyTV ha have a stupid amount of them, JS monstabox @ 5'10 (sold my 5'9 which I regret), lost driver round tail @ 5'11 as a semi step up, lost rocket 5'7, performance twin fish @ 5'7 etc etc. All around 28L for day to day boards, go up slightly for step ups or proper grovellers
@@davewoulfe5291 I guess the equivalent to what I was on would put you on the 6’4”.
I loved the 6’8” and that was 8” longer and 5L more than my ‘normal’ boards. I’m thinking the 6’4” but I think you will just need to decide if you want the extra length?
If you’re in Oz and once you have decided then let me know if you can’t find one at your local shop. We can ship to most parts of Oz and we have some already on order in both constructions. 🤙
