Please look at Brooks Garage 1977 BMW R110RS Electrical System Functional Test youtube video. At 0:22 he describes installing the ground wire to the frame rather than to the tach cable bolt. Having stripped that bolt myself I switched over to this grounding method over 30 years ago. It works fine and is less stressful on the Tach bolt. That's why people ( and shops) do it. Not saying that the rest isn't a mess, but...

What a great project. What keeps the chrome battery side covers on. I hear the OEM system used 'rubber bands' or the like that hooked onto the rear of each side cover as well as metal clips welded to the frame. Did these rubber bands cross over to each side or hook onto each other or onto the frame or something else?

I thought the turn signal switch was on supposed to be on the left side?

Hi,. I’m restoring my bike and I need your help. Bmw r65 1987 problem in light system, position light, low beam, dash light and stop light not working.
I’ve checked and replaced all the 6 boxes that work perfectly, in addition to having changed the 2 fuses under the seat and checked all the wires for possible breaks or disconnections.
Everything was working perfectly until I mistakenly put together pin 3 and 12 main wire harness where the instrument panel connects (when trying to install a new digital dash).
Since that time the position light, low beam, dash light, stop light and back stop light don’t work in ignition position 1.
In ignition position number 2, the turn signals, high and low beams work if I activate the command and the stop light if I press the brake, however the dashboard does not illuminate, neither do I’ve position lights, stop light.
Is there any other fuses or what could have been damaged when connecting those pins (both pins have 12v voltage)? Please if anyone knows what to do I would be very grateful with your help.

There are 72later LWB /5 they welded in an extension tube on swingarm then made it official in /6. Some say the extra 1-1/2 was more for touring comfort.@@williammoses6460

@@441rider Thanks. I got mine in Munich in March of ‘73. The wheelbase was way short. If I’d known it could be changed I might have. Yes I toured on it. Lots. More beemer lore😊

Great video. But why don’t you get something to strap your camera to your chest or forehead so you could use both your hands???????
