Kishore is one of the scholars whom I respect. He has the courage and wisdom to speak up and speak well. Why not let China to manage its own business? If their government becomes really bad, their people will rise up and throw it over. Congratulations to Professor Kishore for releasing his book - Has China Won in China. I felt this is a great dialogue with Kishore while promoting his book. However I felt that some speakers should work on their speech and stay to the point as this is not only targeting Chinese audiences. The Chinese scholars, Professors and experts on China-US relations should learn how to better communicate the China Model to the world.
Kishore Mahbubani is as brilliant as always and made some great points here. He gave three theories on why the US is at odds with China. However, I think his first theory that the number one superpower always wants to contain the emerging superpower contradicts his third theory that the US thinks that if China has become a liberal democracy, then both countries would "live happily ever after". This is because if a superpower always wants to contain an emerging one (the UK vs the US, the US vs Japan, and the Soviet Union), then no matter what the political system of the emerging superpower is, there will always be a conflict with the existing superpower. Take Japan, for example, a liberal democracy, which was a peer competitor to the US in the '80s and early '90s, it has received much harsh criticism (similar to some regard to China) and was forced to appreciate the value of the yen (The Plaza Accord in 1985) leading to start of its economic decline. So if you buy into Kishore's first theory, then you can't buy into the third theory ('live happily ever after if become a democracy). So the only way the US and another country can "live happily ever after"is if that country is not emerging as a peer competitor and let the US alone be the superpower: So if you want to be a friend of number one don't try to surpass number one in science and tech and in military and economic strength or try to take money away from number one by building commercial Jet or chips( Boeing forecast a 9 trillion dollar aerospace market in the next decade, that's a lot of cash) . The US doesn’t have the ability to develop a coherent strategy to compete against China. Everybody is too independent-minded, thinking about their own interests. Government does not have the ability to take the reins of control (like China has) and enact policies that will rejuvenate the US. It is a capitalist democracy ruled by big corporations, Wall Street and money, and these interests are never going to put the country's or its people's interest first. They report to shareholders only and return on capital is their master. It is time for Americans to have their “Meiji Restoration” moment as Japan did in the 1870s, take their hats off and travel to China and examine its social democracy and society of consensus building, then come back and implement policies that will allow them to rebuild their society. But government does not have access to the levers of power to transform society like the Chinese have done. Simply vilifying China is not a winning strategy. The US doesn’t have the ability to develop a coherent strategy to compete against China. Everybody is too independent-minded, thinking about their own interests. Government does not have the ability to take the reins of control (like China has) and enact policies that will rejuvenate the US. It is a capitalist democracy ruled by big corporations, Wall Street and money, and these interests are never going to put the country's or its people's interest first. They report to shareholders only and return on capital is their master.
It is time for Americans to have their “Meiji Restoration” moment as Japan did in the 1870s, take their hats off and travel to China and examine its social democracy and society of consensus building, then come back and implement policies that will allow them to rebuild their society. But government does not have access to the levers of power to transform society like the Chinese have done. Simply vilifying China is not a winning strategy. China will be twice as big as the US in 20 years and leading in education, most of the world's technologies and so on, along with India, probably.
