Commercial artists were under immense pressure to deliver a quality product as quickly as possible. If you’ve ever attempted a pen and ink drawing featuring cross-hatching, you can lose hours during the process as you painstakingly scratch away at your work. But remember that wood engraving requires the use of sharp wood carving tools with the added caveat that mistakes were impossible to correct.
However, capitalism to the rescue! The halftone process that evolved slowly through the mid to late 1900s involved exposing images onto a metal photo plate through a course screen, resulting in an image consisting of dots of various sizes. This plate would then be processed and etched and ready for the press.

There is another and important reason why Halftone's came to be. The cost of printing. I worked in a full blown printing company in the 70's. By giving the illusion of a solid picture for less ink cost is a main reason why it was so popular. Everything costs money. And I still have my halftone meter that measures the pixel distance. What you people do digitally I had to do it by hand. This gave me a solid foundation to create content decades later.

Will the illustrator version work in the ipad version of illustrator?
Adobe does not allow users to install swatches to the iPad version of Illustrator. We recommend letting them know that's a feature you want.
