I had such an awesome time. I just wish we had more photos and videos to remember it by, but given that I took none myself, I'm really grateful that you put this together Zac.
If you have ever seen Easton flourishing a sword at blindingly fast speed while casually commenting, you can't forget that behind that nice and reasonable personality there are years of HEMA proficiency
Man it was so good this year, but huge respect for all the guys actually fighting - I was cooking just watching in a T-Shirt, must have been crazy hot in armour....
As a tabletop wargamer, those miniatures are BEAUTIFUL for the fight recreation! Absolutely love their work. And man, you guys look so good in your full armor!
All the participants' dedication to the reenactment is such a joy to see, especially by those we've known for years, so Zach is a very welcome addition. Thanks, also, for featuring a tabletop battle with miniatures (that's more my thing). If anyone knows the gaming system used for that game, I'd appreciate it.
One of the main reasons I go to Tewkesbury is for the market. Such a great one with a huge range of products. With the free entry I think it's also a great one to suggest visiting to friends and co-workers who haven't been to a re-enactment before.
It really was hot, Saturday nearly killed me. Was nice to see all you guys in Gloucesters block (even saw myself stood behind you guys waiting to go on). You all looked great, glad you enjoyed the total madness that is Tewkesbury.
That looks incredible. I'm very jealous of you guys having such incredible events. I didn't manage to find anything similar over here in Germany yet. The typical medieval fair is very authentic ...to medieval movies. German ones, and those tend to be so bad that even Braveheard is better
I also strongly recommend the channel 'Geschichtsfenster' by Andrej Pfeiffer-Perkuhn. If you like long monologues supported with period pictures and of reconstructions and reenactments.
Great video, I for one would love more like this. It was crazy hot as a spectator in shorts & T-Shirt, so hats off to all of you in harness, I can't begin to imagine how hot you were, but your efforts are greatly appreciated!
This was such a great "behind the scene" video of 'Tewkesbury'. And wonderful to so so many people/artist/artisans/reenactors that I follow on FB and UA-cam. Thank you for taking us along with you. Hope there will be more videos like this. Are there other big events on your calender for 2022? Anyhow - thanks again, 👋🏻 from 🇳🇱.
It's funny that you mentioned not taking your camera out on the field. In America's CW reenacting, folks have been known to try to disguise their phone or camera (in the old days) whilst on the field. 🙂 Glad you had a great time 🙂
That looked amazing! What would one call a mix of glee and envy? Glenvy? I don't know but I have it. Should I ever get over to the UK, I will schedule my visit around this event. Thanks for the vid.
im surprised you guys in full plate weren't all keeling over dead with the heat. was worth suffering through though but shame everyone's card readers were down. imagine there were a lot of missed sales because of it. shocked there were so many famous faces there as well, although i suppose i shouldn't be really. anyway here's to another great one next year.
gutted I didn't bump into you, spent most of my time rushing about for my first bit of soft kit and trying (in vain) to find some points so I could wear it 😂
@@ZacharyEvans I'm definitely going to have to buy a bunch, looking forward to finally starting in reenactment, now that my soft kit's all in one place, though the hat I bought does make me look like a gnome.
@@ZacharyEvans For about the last 2 months, our lows each night have been about 25. Highs have been 40+….it’s been hitting 43 the past week or so and is supposed to stay that way for a while. Other than for about an hour a couple of weeks ago, we haven’t had any rain since around Feb. I’m in France next week and it looks like I’m bringing the Texas heat with me. We’d *love* it to be in the upper 20s. We’d joust all day in that! ;-) …but I about froze my butt off at night last week when I was at an event in Oregon when it got down to 10. ;-) Stay cool.
It's funny how the body acclimatises to temperatures it's used to. I find it hard to sleep inside once I've had a weekend away in a tent, because I feel so warm. I think what we struggle with here is that the heat comes in waves: we have a week or two of very hot, then it goes back down again.
Gee, 1 guy with a warhammer would have a field day on these guys since most of them aren't wearing any proper padding under their armor, allowing for full knetic force to pass threw and also not creating pressure against denting..... It's like watching a holywood movie! But hey "historically", also before you go the "ahh but too hot for padding!", expect the padding also keeps heat out, especially since steel absorbs heat and retains it.
I can assure you we were all wearing arming doublets which are sufficient to the purpose, most of us were actually hit by various weapons with significantly more heft than a single handed warhammer and we failed to die. When you are wearing plate/brigandine there is little to no historical evidence for becoming the Michelin man with.overly done padding, and it actually can badly restrict your movement leaving you vulnerable.
Well I could see a few wearing doublets or even Gambesons, but I saw a lot of people at least from my perspective that weren't, seemed most where wearing linnen shirts styled as a Gambesons but wasn't actually one. And there is also no historical evidence that it's smart to directly wear plate against your skin, for several reasons, especially in high tempratures. Taking my statement to a extreme to try and dismiss it is just silly. Also, if we're talking 15th century, you'll be facing someone in full steel plate who doesn't need to use a shield and who will be using a 2h warhammer. Also if pikes and warhammers weren't a problem, explain : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Morgarten And I have about 101 more historical examples I can refer too.
@@ZacharyEvans I consider something like a Gambesons, although that can be used as armor itself as proper padding. I forgot how you call the less filled version. I'm guessing the less filled version is used under plate armor because I can't find anything definitive on which was used with what, just that they where used in combination with plate and chain. Usually made out of leather and wool or leather and linnen. As for the evidence, you do not ask someone to proof that god doesn't excist, someone has to proof god excists. I did do an other post that dissappeared for some reason linking the first museum's that I got on google research on the matter. From what I saw in the video and got me dissappointed was that it looked like a lot of people where wearing basic t-shirts simply styled to look like a Gambeson. But dare I ask what makes you think you don't wear padding under plate armor in the 15th century ? Especially since if you where wearing proper steel plate of high quality, the only thing that could really harm you would something with enough kenetic energy to break you inside your armor or dent it too the point it crushes you ? And if you want proof that kenetic energy is lessend by padding, enough youtube videos you can find people running tests proving just that (although in some cases you would wonder if it would be worth it considering the minimal effects).

What's the food like at a place like this? In Houston we have the Renaissance Fair but it's just Ye Olde Turkey Legs and funnel cakes.
Pretty similar: hot dogs and donuts kind of thing. Often a hog roast. If you want something authentic you need to cook it yourself.
Loved it
