I was there, a member of the Fly Squad and the last of the 16 injured evacuated via HS-12. This is the first time I have seen a news report on this incident.
I was on board. I worked in Captains office, XO office and Legal Department. Never forgot the day the ship "rocked" when the explosion went off. Never forgot processing the paperwork for the deceased.
I was also onboard at the time. I believe, I was on switchboard watch and heard the call for GQ being given. Afterwards, the Captain addressed everyone, who mustered on the Hangar Deck. Very sad day indeed.
Back when I was on the Midway (83-85), there was at least 1 fire a day. On a bad day there'd be 4 or 5. I saw a guy bust off into flames changing a LOX tank on an A6 in the hanger deck one time. Must've had some hydraulic fluid on his pants leg. I put him out with a fire extinguisher before they even call the fire alarm on the 1mc.
"Back when I was on the Midway (83-85), there was at least 1 fire a day" Was There(VA-115) From 86-88 And Observed That As Well..Midway And Coral Sea Were The *Worst* Carriers To Be Attached To @ That Time...
That was definitely teh suck. And that was only the second ship I'd ever been stationed on. If only I had done better in my "C" school, I woulda avoided this...
I was sprinkler man that day gave Johnsan his last chew, he told me he would get another when he got back. Last thing he said to me. I was one of the two that volunteered to go down and cover him and his partner after all was clear so they could be retrieved.
I believe it was in 1990 we were on fire for 3 days, 7 men lost their lives in those 3 days. When your out at sea there is no where to run. I was there with VFA-192. 1 year later I was stranded at Cubi Point Base in the Phillippines when Mt. Pinutubo erupted. That was worse than the war a few months prior. No food, no water, no electricity for a week. It was the 2nd worst natural disaster of the 20Th century. I can not believe I made it home alive
@@ricksepulveda2142 Wow. You were on the ship with my friend Benny Jones. I think he was a cook. He would tell me how many times he went to Thailand and the Philippines. My brother got on the ship 91-92. Glad you made it back. War sucks especially when it's for profit.
I was on board. The fire was in a storage room a few decks below our berthing. I heard that the firefighters went down to address it and were standing in JP5 fuel and opened a hatch to the room with the fire and there was a backdraft and subsequent explosion. It was a sad day.
I thought I heard that a steam catapult line ruptured and took out a JP5 line. That fire must have been burning in that space for a long time to cause that kind of blast. Funny thing is, I don't really remember feeling the blast.
Pretty accurate, the first explosion didnt happen until the cat shot! I was on the squad and just left the 4th deck to swap out expired OBA canister and was on the 3rd deck when the first explosion happened. I was the last evacuee off the ship with 3rd degree burns on 60% of my body despite being heavily protected in gear unlike most there that day. The other 15 were way more seriously injured one of which I carried from the space to the forward mess deck before I went to medical.

My dad was there he worked in CAG5 he's traumatized by it.
One of the scariest times of my life. Not even Desert Storm was that fucked up.
That was a very bad day. I remember it well.
i was there. 2C Boiler Tech
Any Boatswain mates here?
My husband was stationed with CNFJ at the time, and I worked at the officer's club. When news hit the base the atmosphere was extremely grim.
I was there, a member of the Flying Squad 2nd team. What a sad day that I will remember for the rest of my life. ;-(.
I was there too, Ray Wells relieved me

@@ProudBM19 I always thought Midway was the best ship to be on. As far as fires were concerned, we were well trained and knew how to deal with them.
I was aboard when it happened. Japan would not let us turn around for several hours and come back into port.
David Lamont i was aboard as well when this happened!
Yup me too.

Was there with G-4 Weapons.
I was there. They asked for 'volunteers' to go into the fire and relieve the Flying Squad when they got all tuckered out.
In 1977 they lost a chiller motor and some other electrical components which filled part of they lower decks with smoke.
you are right David I was in V4 division at that time
My brother was on there
I was there, just layed down in bed when the "flying squad" was alerted. It was one hell of a day.
That it was. I'm glad this was my last ship. We couldn't secure the watch because we were EW's. EW's always get left behind...
+Mrdarwinfinch71 I was aboard as well.
what year s
+Mrdarwinfinch71 1989 to 1991. I rode her all the way back to San Diego.
me too, first stop after I boarded was mombasa
Yeah I was there too. Terrible time, RIP MS (Johnson) I fed him his last meal, haunts me to this day.
I believe we were in the same Division..S2. Selbe if I’m not mistaken. It was a tragic day.

I wonder is this was when my brother was on the ship or a friend who talked about a fire kind of like this.

I was there happen right below my birthing area
Midway went back to Yokosuka and if I remember correctly, we spent 5-6 months there getting repaired.
We got underway for Desert Shield in September 1990, so it wasn't 5-6 months.
