Does Howard realize how huge his mastery of the instrument actually is? He can literally play ANYTHING on that 10 hole beast. These lessons he gives are Gold. I do appreciate his demos without the overblows & overdraws, for I am one of those poor souls who still can’t work it out, and/or lack any control over them when I do. Levy’s playing and his lessons are always an inspiration to continue practicing and challenging myself to be a better player/musician. And many thanks to Mr. Levy for bringing some needed respect to that little metal sandwich.
@@tedpowers2045 to play with the 5 hole draw as the tonic. That would be an F on a C harp. The name of the positions come from the circle of fifths, check that out. :)
As a fiddle player I've been trying to find out all these thing for years, and I've bought Harmonica books. I really appreciate you dealing with Dorian Mode, and If you could help me out with Aeolian Mode and Harmonic minor that would be huge! To me this is "Real World" Music Theory, that would totally bog the mind of a Walter Piston. It is sort of a "Slide Rule" Theory of Music where you get the right answer without having to do all the Math. I can play most of this stuff on my fiddle, but if I actually knew the keys I was "Cross fiddling" to it would be so much easier to find the positions. Thanks, Jack
I remember for YEARS listening to the Flecktones' old stuff (think Sinister Minister) and trying to figure out what that sound even *was* that I was hearing. This man literally brings entire characters to life with the sound he creates. So humbling and such a genius. That whole group was special, but I think the craziest part is how down to earth each is - how, as advanced as they are, they're all childlike in the joy they from their instruments and sharing music.
Howard levy is so good he makes you cry with one note. He's a true virtuoso. I have always had great respect and admiration of him and his music and what he did for the diatonic harmonica who are always seen as less important than chromatic harmonica
What do you expect from the master? He can just simplify the complicated things. Thank Mr Levy! Keep safe and stay healthy always. :) Greetings from the Philippines :)
Thank You Mr. Levy for this cool sharing. I started harp in 1974 as a young teen and after hearing/meeting Charlie McCoy went into Bluegrass bands in Fla ("Bluegrass Gospel Train", "Shady Grove Bluegrass") and then full-time at 20 in a SoCal in a Honk-Tonk Country band so, 2nd position was my main "go to" position. Later had a Swing Dance Band 10 years so, much Dorian on those heads and lines with horns. Whenever I get a country or bluegrass session usually go for 2nd position, but going to try this mixing it up. Thank you again for always being generous in your sharing your gift!
If you ever get back to the Cafe Carpe with Corky or just yourself... I’m THERE! Your love, support and dedication to this unheralded instrument is inspiring.
I got drawn to this little magic 'invisible' instrument after watching your revolutionary work of 8 years ago. I practised ever since. Mr. Levy is always improving his playing and never cease to be creative even to this date!
Thank you for this Howard, you gave us some cool weekend practice. Coincidently, I have Marine Band Deluxe "Joe Spiers" custom in A handy. Makes harmonica life a lot easier.
Thank you Howard for keep pushing the boundary, it's mind-blowing to me that there are still so many possibilities to be discovered! I've been playing the Power-chromatic chromatic harp for years, still finding new possibilities occasionally. Although using different instruments, you have always been my life-long inspiration! Alas I'm moving so slowly.
What a diverse range of styles you have mastered , though I knew when I met you at Spah that you embodied a sense of Royalty, I was to inexperienced to understand what I was seeing and hearing musically. These videos show me what I was sensing at the time ! Happy Birthday and may you continue to share your amazing self for many more !
Mr. Levy this is so inspiring! I am planning to start your online lessons in a couple of weeks. In preparation I just purchased a C marine band crossover. Do you have any other resources or advice? I can play a little but will be starting at the beginning and hopefully make it through the entire series - might take me a while. I do have some music knowledge with trumpet and guitar. These videos are just amazing.
That is awesome sounding. Howard do you practice overblows with any specific exercises? I've been doing diminished scales in cross on a C harp lately. It'd be a dream to just be able to grab these notes like any other but sometimes i miss one or it doesn't pop out. I gave up on overblows and overdraws for a while but there's so much you can't play if you omit them. Like nice chromatic runs and stuff. Thanks for your videos.
@@HowardLevyland Yeah i gap them lower for overblows. Do you work every single key on one harp when you practice? Like play a scale through every key in the cycle of fourths?
When people ask (and when I imagine) what one can do with a humble diatonic harmonica, the answer is Howard Levy and Frederic Yonnet! Thank you both for the inspiration! 🙏🏾
Howard. I hope YOU can convice the 'cross harp' players to go out of their comfort zone. Ive been trying to show players the value of 12th pos in country and soul music for years, but they seem too proud to re-learn, and take up Oblows. I believe that If you stop listening; you stop learning; you stop progressing as a musician
I bought a Marine Band Deluxe, I tweaked the reeds, it played overblows and overdraws perfectly for just 5 min. Once the moisture reached the wooden comb, air started to leak from the channels and it became awful. Hohners are garbage scrap rubbish
I don’t think I’ve found anyone who can get as much out of 1 harmonica as this man.
Talk about a wealth of knowledge in one man’s head!

The Einstein of harmonica never ceases to amaze me.
🙏❤️🙏 from Calcutta, India... Love you!
After 30 Years of playing bass and guitar, i now started playing the harmonica. I love it!
I was a bassist in 90s grunge /funk bands now I teach harmonica but gees I'm only about 10% as good as Howard
You make it seem so easy Howard.
Dude, I messed around in 12th position a few times and got some OK stuff but you're just 110% onto it. Respect!
The genius Levy blows again!
How did I spend 67 years on this planet and JUST discover you Howard? Your work with Miroslav Tadiç is astounding.. I"m hooked!
Thank you!
BEAUTIFUL LESSON HOWARD.....
When you play XII position with no overblows it's pure magic. I am speechless
What is 12th position

They are less important than chromatic harmonicas!!
Amazing and complicated too
I'm old and it takes a LOT to amaze me-but this has! Thanks Howard!
You are incredible Howard but overblows are impossible for a lot of us.You play a diatonic better than some can play a chromatic. Mind boggling!

Sounds great. As a new bee of the harp. Sounds so confusing but intriguing at the same time. Thanks man.

Hello Howard, great video.. I'm am learning the harp licks in this video. I have an A harp and can you tell what notes you modified.... Thanks
Thanks a lot Howards for this magic lesson !! May I Ask you where I can find your backtracks on your cellphone ?
Thank you ! :)
Thanks for great content.
so I can have more context .. What position does Neil Young and Bob Dylan play in? Are they playing cross harp mostly?

Good. And yes, I practice lots of transposition of exercises and tunes.

Howard, first off, this is excellent playing. Question: Do you leave your tongue on the comb or are you pursing most of the time? Thanks
Thanks! And I pucker for single notes.
@@HowardLevyland I think we have mutual friends who rarely, if ever, take their tongue off the comb. Mark Hummel comes to mind

There should be a law against people being able to play like that. lol
😂
Great stuff Howard!
Awesome!
