The fact that it launched without Liquify and especially the Lasso tool is wild. Those tools are basically a MUST HAVE already
Nuh uh, not just that.. The fact that they have the full access of Procrate API... and the blasphemy to not have Procreate tools themselves integrated with the animation software part.. is beyond , me as to why is"Different" when most useful tools that Procreate has that would be phenomenal.. Dreams doesn't? tsk tsk; I understand the developers and creators Ideas... but... sad when the idea is opaque but the initiation was overshot lol

Meanwhile, everyone is acting like Dream’s capacity to adjust the timeline WHILE THE ANIMATION IS PLAYING in REAL TIME is not an ABSOLUTE MIRACLE!!
Everything about Procreate Dream’s UI is unprecedented!!!

But once you get it, it’s a game changer that pushes everything else back into the STONE AGE!
It’s like we’ve been granted the paradigm shift of our FIRST flying car of Animation, and everyone’s griping about how the windshield wipers don’t work 🤷🏾

@@ewaekifzay3732 yeah i understand the issues and lack of basic features being annoying but people expecting a $20 program to do everything a $100+ a year program does and more is beyond idiotic and extremely tone deaf
the app for the price is is phenomenal, but it needs a lot of work. I find it extremely hard to get so angry about it though when i paid less than what a cheap case and screen protector cost, plus the fact that the app will be continually updated and supported with fixes and new features for years
Since it's still new I'm pretty sure they're gonna add more stuff in the future! But releasing it before making sure they put everything the artist needs is a bad decision, they should at least put a beta testing version first.

Like some things I get not having on release, but basic things for animation are not ok to not have before release. No one likes when something releases unfinished that’s why everyone hates a lot of modern games we shouldn’t rely on adding things in after release to have something functional

Last I checked everyone on earth is free to have their own opinion. Doesn’t mean that YOU have to LIKE it. You can always disagree - besides, finding fault is the EASIEST thing to do on Earth!
But Callipeg added things after release, ToonSquid , added things after release, Toonboom added things after release, Photoshop added things after release, Final Cut Pro added things after release, iPhones were released without cut and paste, the iPad began as a toy upon release, ZBrush and Blender were almost unusable upon release, Storyboard Pro, added things after release, After effects, added things after release, etc. etc. etc.
Sorry, I can’t think of a single app that was released fully loaded.
This is not 1982. We live in a new paradigm where products are pushed out ASAP, while developers spend the rest of their lives updating them, and I’m HERE for it!❤️🔥

Hobbyists may HATE Dreams with all of their heart, but if it’s good enough for seasoned Disney animators, it’s CERTAINLY good enough for me.
Yes, it’s frustrating that they are still working on some very basic functions, but for me personally, the good FAR outweighs the bad.
And I am having a ball learning all of the breakthrough innovations, in the interim!
I’m THRILLED that they released it right away, because I’m creating PURE MAGIC for the first time on an iPad!
But don’t let me stop you from being as miffed as you wanna be!

@@Tonabillityseriously??? the VAST majority of good apps at release are fine and the expectation should be that they’re fine. obviously most programs would be improved over the years but how is the bar so low that users shouldn’t even be able to expect a fully functional app upon buying it????
Lasso/selection tool is such an integral part of any digital art program, I’m honestly beyond surprised this was not there day one. I agree with your comments on the touch gestures, it’s disappointing that it’s the only way to undo/redo etc. I love the presentation here but lack of basic features make it hard to use compared to something like Toonsqiud. I’m sure the devs are working on it tho.
ToonSquid was also released minus a few functions. They’ve been updating for years, but still slows down and LAGS horribly when the file gets too large, especially with onion skin engaged. And they have nothing even remotely comparable to Performance Mode. I find their vertical timeline scrubbing function to be nightmarish. And having to manually save just when I’m beginning to focus drives me crazy!!🤬

yeah, i’d agree very heavily. this is what makes me want to crawl back to toonsquid when animating for my first simple draft, but i did read somewhere from a dev that they’re working on that and i think it’s high priority, and a lot other things! I hope it’s in the next update, and that better be soon. I can’t animate without lasso and co.
@@dolledphoenix I actually learned a way to hack the system, and animate WITHOUT the lasso tool!
I have to jump through a few more hoops, and animate with the layers of the TIMELINE as opposed to the layers of the flipbook.
But I recently discovered that the really seasoned professionals never reuse frames anyway. Even if it is a lassoed STILL frame, they trace over it to keep each drawing alive!
Yes, it’s a lot of extra work, but when has traditional Animation NOT been a ton of extra work?? 🤷🏾😩😝
Seeing as how it isn’t a subscription service and the developer’s reputation for improving their app I am willing to stick this out. It is also still more intuitive to use compared to other apps

Same! Especially since all the better animation software is under a subscription service (except for probably Krita, though after CSP and many other animation software have gone the subscription service route I would be nervous to see if it being free is true or not). The one-off purchase system is still a godsend for artists like us who can't afford, nor keep up with subscription services, so here's hoping Procreate Dreams improves in the future. 0_0
Here's also that ToonSquid and some other free and single-purchase animation apps get some love and reconciliation as well!

i’ve animated a few times in the past + used the original procreate since 2019, i bought procreate dreams on the first day it released, and it was literally UNBEARABLE to me. there isn’t even a BACK ARROW?? it forces you to use the tapping to redo etc. so many necessary tools procreate has that procreate dreams doesn’t. i figured they’d add all that in soon but they still haven’t…
That’s what baffles me the most, all these necessary, quality of life tools are IN Procreate proper, I have no idea why they would launch without them
I didn’t like the back arrow thing too, but seriously, it takes skill and a long time to create an app. Plus they probably have billion of people bombarding them about the app release date, so…you gotta give them a break and just enjoy what they did with it.
@@keithandchrissysteury9085of course, but they’ve released an unfinished app that is missing integral tools to animating! And they claim that it’s the easiest to use etc etc. They released it too early
not sure if its an addition from an update but there are undo/redo buttons you just have to turn them on in the settings

Kinda wish they’d add all the options like bloom and chromatic aberration, and motion blurring would be pretty great, or a lasso tool 💀

They need frame layers selection tools and easier scene making for me to actually use it by itself. The only reason why im not solely using toonsquid is because the blur features in dreams are really good for detailing
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!!! The app is really incredible in many ways and as a person with a couple years of experience now animating in Flipaclip this app is a HUGE upgrade (Especially for only 20 dollars!?) however I CANNOT live without a lasso tool and it is quite glitchy. I’m just waiting for a lasso tool update now :’)
Hopefully they add lasso tool soon it would improve it a lot
I agree with your review.. the UI is a mess… hiding stuff to maintain some sort of minimal aesthetic, tools feel rough and incomplete. I’m going to shelve it for a few months and hope it’s good some time in 2024
I wasn’t crazy about the UI either until I developed the capacity to learn how to use it. Now it’s a beautiful thing to behold!❤️🔥
Yeah I do need to force myself to get used to it(Procreate was pretty easy to get used to), however I do think it will mature a lot in the next few updates, so I’ll stick to my plan of waiting it out a bit before really getting stuck in.

I really liked how you gave an honest review! I was really excited about this app but when I read reviews in the app store and learned that the app was missing a lasso tool and several other important tools I decided not to purchase it for the time being. I heard that the layout also sucks for many people.

@@viyaura If you have a computer and art tablet Opentoonz has rigging and skeletons so you can animate without drawing every frame
I’ve had a lot of fun using the animation assist feature in default procreate. I was hoping dreams would be an expanded version of that, but I’ve had so much trouble using it I still go back to base procreate for animations and only use dreams for editing and sound.
The company has impressed me with their free updates for the base app so I’m pretty confident they’ll improve the app with time. We’ll see how it goes, not a fan so far but it has huge potential.

it needs many many tools, instant motion or instant flow animations like werble pulse effects that would work amazingly well with the perform tool in procreateDreams, i bought it to support the developers but looking forward what they bring to the table
I bought the app since I’m studying animation and was excited to do silly little animations in my free time, however I have yet to really make anything with it cause I can’t wrap my head around the timeline feature and how to add and maneuver around the tracks as well as the flippbook feature being super clunky and difficult to use for my for some, as well as the lack of tools such as liquify and the lasso tool which I often use to correct minor errors in my work. The app also crashed on me twice while I was trying to do one of the basic starting animations we had learned in class to test out the program. In conclusion it was pretty frustrating and kind of a letdown because I manly use procreate as my main drawing program and latterly was able to do two different bouncing ball animation in it’s much simpler and frankly more limited animation assist feature 💀
I’m not sure if it’s just how my brain is wired (I have AUDHD) that me struggle with it but I have seen a lot of cool and fun stuff being made with the program already so it definitely has potential but as it is right now I’m not feeling very motivated to use it. Maybe once it gets more updates and is improved upon but I’m scared it’ll going to crash on me again 💀
I think it's crazy they didn't give the option to disable the gesture controls, since they had an option to do that in regular Procreate. The number of times I've accidentally triggered the Undo gesture when I just want to zoom or rotate the canvas is headache inducing.
I like the app (not experienced animator) and it’s been good using it to do some things. I couldn’t believe there’s no transform tools etc in flipbook mode though. They have those in adobe fresco. You need to be a much better artist than me to use that. Plus it’s too easy to accidentally mess something up with the touch gestures in the timeline. But it’s otherwise fairly intuitive and some intro videos let me into the hidden secrets. I hope they can change those things. But it’s still pretty cool and I adapted to the UI much better than other animation apps I briefly tried with timelines that made a lot less sense to me. I like using groups in the timeline.
It's very nice to come across a video that completely encapsulated my first experience with Dreams. It was like hearing back my own exact thoughts and experiences lol.
I just bought it and it’s kinda difficult with the lack of tools but I’m praying they add more drawing features soon and make it more similar to procreate cus I’m losing my mind rn 😭😭😭
Great review. Have bought it because I have Procreate, should open it up and play, I’m thinking it’s early days and needs a lot of work. I just wanted to support the team because I use Procreate a lot professionally.
One thing is that there is a lasso tool sort of, you just circle around the thing you want to move with the "freehand" selection thing you showed, then tap the arrow button next to the selection button in the top bar to move the selected area around

I think that the BIGGEST thing missing is A FREAKING TUTORIAL I HAD TO WATCH SO MANY TUTORIALS JUST TO HAVE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING
It has potential but I can’t use it on my current iPad ,,,, it always crashes
what absolutely baffled me is that there is no way to change pressure sensitivity. No lasso tool. I can't even change the order of my layers... and the worst of all, in flipbook mode (wthen you use the floating window to flip trough frames) doesn't have any options to make a frame longer. I always have to quit that window, find my track, make the change, find which frame I left off with, turn off the big window view, and place the floating one to where it is comfortable for me to have it...
I wish they had a discord or some polls where we can suggest things. (If there is I'm glad, but I haven't heard of it. At least not one where they respond and tell us that "oh yea we'll add that soon")

Not sure if I was doing it wrong but found I could only put 2 HD movie files in layered on top of each other. Any more videos would snap to the side and wouldn't go onto a third layer. Haven't done much in it just yet but seems like a good app but has a lot to build on. Also like ProCreate at the beginning, it seems to be missing text.

The interface, or user interface (UI) is being described correctly. It’s what we (as the user of an app) interact with. How the app visually represents to us what it is we as users can do with the app. So on Facebook the UI is your feed, and everything you can click on is encompassed in this. The UI mostly refers to the tools to get you from point A to point B. So think: menus, and visual things you interact with.

As long as I have it, it will improve, but yeah the problem was the lack of the lasso, that was my first annoying thing that was missing. But they have it slated to be included in the first, main update
I think it has a ton of potential - but it was released too early. It felt severely unfinished - especially for frame by frame animations. I continue using toonsquid. Sucks that I bought it before it was finished- and their media isn't prioritizing the lasso tool. Supposedly it's coming up, but not in the next few updates
I 100% agree. I seriosuly can’t comprehend releasing any drawing app without a lasso tool. 1995 MSPaint has a lasso tool 😅

Is your video HDR or something? The bright color are so blinding. I have never encounter youtube video as bright as yours lol, my screen suddenly on steroid only on the video part. I check other HDR video but it does not behave the same

I’ve noticed that I can only undo like 3 times before it suddenly undoes a bunch of actions… like bruh. I wanted to just do five things, not my ENTIRE FRAME
PS. This comment is on Feb 12, 2024. Still sucks shit. Bought it day 1 because I (which I will never again for any company) believed in procreate due to how good their last product was and has been, only to get some sorry husk of an app that realistically should’ve just been an add on to procreate (one I would’ve gladly paid for) rather than its own app. It’s been months and they have made barely to no updates.
Saying it sucks when it only costs $26 is crazy. It’s great value. But more expensive software if you expect something perfectly polished.

It's funny seeing people say "are you an animator, why are you reviewing this" when the product's whole advertisement basis was making animation accessible to anyone.
They should have let the software cook for another year. The artists they commissioned to make marketing material for them I guess were too spineless to actually be honest about the software to Procreate.
Procreate itself is a better animation tool than Procreate Dreams.

I want to use the rig and bones system to animate 2D sprites without redrawing every position. I heard this can do it, but also I can do it in Blender.
Oh man, that’ll be a game changer if they implement armatures/rigging for 2D animation in Procreate Dreams!

I’ve been having trouble importing my audio (I’ve tried lots of tutorials and this app, and it won’t convert to mp3) which I need to make animatics
It sucks you can’t draw on masked videos either for the audio. I thought I saw one of their main things was you could animate on top of videos?
It’s lacking features overall and I too was disappointed when I payed 26 dollars for it which is a lot more money than it should be, in its current state anyways
I usually just put things in layers.. don’t use lassos much since back when I only had photoshop to work with

I use procreate dreams and I agree with the person that said it's feels like a beta version and those finger movements... I cried and just gave up on that. This app has promise but the hidden functions and the finger gestures puts me off sometimes.
I just bought an animator's guide book. "The Animator's Survival Kit", bu Richard Williams. It costs more but it's amazingly simple to read.

When you said it coasts you one burger menu for the app I was like shocked cuz in my country, it coasts like 6 to 8 burger menu for meee😭😭😭

The original procreate app doesn’t have layers, so the scope of animation you could do is limited. I honestly think it’s scummy that they didn’t just add these features to the main app. Just trying to squeeze more money out of us. At least it’s not a subscription, i suppose.
Yes, but it doesn’t have certain things like audio, tweening or move and scale, and Procreate has a limited amount of frames because frames are layers when you animate while Dreams doesn’t have this.
I barely use it I bought it because I’m a fan of the company lol
Why is the video suddenly so… bright? Jesus christ how do I turn that off?
It's apparently HDR - when videos are uploaded like that, some screens jack up the brightness to get the full dynamic range. As far as I know, there is no cure.

you were on the lasso, as you were saying it didn't have it, I believe. In the video, you were circling the word "freehand" with your pencil,thats the lasso in procreate
I can't figure out how to add a second time-line to draw on. The purpose of this would be to simultaneously motion tween different elements.
Can you not import files/layers from Procreate or other apps in order to avoid having to redraw stuff?

it's possible! tbh if you want to do frame by frame animation, it's best to make the keys in procreate, tranfer them to dreams and make in-betweens there

Yeah, i really don’t like this trend in software and games with companies release broken crap and then “fixing” it over the next year with “updates”.
I like procreate dreams, but for me sometimes it randomly freezes and then I gotta reset it, the tricks and stuff that help plenty you have to find by yourself or on yt videos (even before this there were only short form not long form tips for pd, which was a pain since before when animating I didn’t know how to turn on onion frames (｡•́︿•̀｡))
But I still think it’s good, now that I’ve learned how to do all a that. I’ve easily made animations that would take a hour or 2 to do, now it only takes me 30 min (might just be cause I’m a fast drawer..)

You are correctly using the word interface. Also known as user interface, essentially the buttons, menus, etc. of the app :)
I’m pretty sure they want you to draw most of it in procreate and import it and use the drawing in dreams only for details or edits
That’s dumb af and not worth the price tag at all.
4:30 this part ikr I can’t move the screen size in detailed way and that kinda made me scream in the night while trying to make some animations. It’s such a great app but… some small parts are silly.
U gotta have the eye in a separate group and go out of drawing mode.. then you can move it around

I mean. Procreate has always been known for hidong features. Took me forever to find liquify in Procreate. And i made a pretty good animation with dreams. It would be nice to have lasso but it's not too big of a deal.
ANYTHING radically new takes getting used to. That’s how you KNOW that it’s radically new. I’m old enough to remember when no one knew how to use a friggin’ iPhone. “WHAA where are the buttons?? “ 😩😭 💦 THAT’S how innovative, it was!
It took Apple forever just to figure out how to cut and paste!
Now every gesture is second nature.
The more I play with Dreams, the more it feels like something Tony Stark would come up with🤖
Of course I’m also frustrated that it doesn’t yet have a basic lasso tool, and merge layer function. However, discovering workarounds in the interim, is more fun than I could ever imagine!
I’ve even figured out a substitute for the Shift n’ Trace” feature of ToonBoom!!

They will be upgrading this app for the rest of our lives, but I’m sooo glad that they released it when they did, because I’m having time of my LIFE!! 🔥😃
So like they said are you able to draw on 1 million by 1 million pixels on procreate.
If you have a stylus that's from a minor third party it won't work on it, I can't use the app after buying it because my stylus is one such. Gotta drop $800 on the Apple pencil sometime :')

It is better at being an animated procreate than Dreams at this moment. I love Procreate but it is a work in progress.
Just got toon squid after reading this, and all the recent toonsquid app store reviews that say “i bought this after being disappointed with procreate dreams and i love it” haha!
I feel like dreams took the opposite aproach to procreate. while procreate is intuitive, easy to understand, navigate and use. Dreams insists on making me learn a bunch of cryptic gestures and the navigation is equaly as cryptic, at least to me. I'm going back to dreams in 2 years time and hope it becomes more intuitive.
I genuienly feel like regular procreate is still easier to use as animation tool.
They also don’t support controllers like 8bitdo or Manba, which every other app does. You also can’t change any of the keyboard shortcuts, which is a HUGE accessibility problem. Many disabled people can’t even use their apps bc they insist on gestures 😢
Is there a comparative iOS animation app for that price? I also appreciate the companies AI stance, which should be common, but unfortunately isn’t, so will continue to support them
I hear there is toonsquid. Its a lot more feature filled and I personally like it a lot more than anything I have ever used.
Toon Squid! Half the price with twice the features. Just read all the recent app store reviews, a lot of them are ppl who were unhappy with Dreams

because you cant draw on it with out procreate (draw on it well)
but i guess it kinda make sense why you wouldn't give it easy drawing
okay, so I’m taking a course in animation at my high school, but I know adobe animate has a much different way to animate that procreate dreams. But I know one of the most important rules of animation is if it needs to me animated, it must be on it’s own layer. So each individual eye, even specific strands of hair, need to be on their own layer. So they may not have added the lasso tool because it’s…not necessary? IDK HONESTLY but for the liquify, no clue why they wouldn’t add that. hope this helps out a lil!!
