  • Daikin air source heat pump, a Rheem electric hot water tank, and a HRV (heat recovery ventilator) from Lifebreath make up the all-electric mechanical room in our newest net-zero custom home.
Answering our most asked question about net zero homes - what is our mechanical system for a high efficient home? And how do you prevent "Sick House Syndrome" in a highly efficient home build?
This setup allows us to be up to 300% more efficient than conventional gas equivalents. We love these options to reduce utility bills and save money over the lifespan of the home.
Another top question we get is around our air-tight homes, and "Sick House Syndrome." By using an HRV, you have full control of the air you're bringing into your home, and the air that is returned back out. An HRV (we love the ones from Lifebreath) are a great addition to any home to better control the air quality in your home, instead of relying on air being pushed out through pressurization through air gaps in your home.
Being in a cold climate, we also often get asked how do net zero homes work in really cold climates? Axe explains how this setup is more efficient than traditional gas run mechanical systems, and can be fully relied on and efficient up until about -30 degrees Celsius, at which point the backup electric heaters turn on to help out with the high demand weather.
