Nature spirits in Rus'

The spirits of natural space among the Eastern Slavs in Siberia included the goblin, the merman and the mermaid. The attitude towards them was ambiguous: on the one hand, the goblin could lead a traveler into the wilderness as punishment for careless attitude to forest resources, on the other hand, he could lead out and suggest good places for picking mushrooms and berries. Mermaids were prophets of bad events, and at the same time, in the Rusal week before or after Trinity, they were associated with the forces of fertility, flowering and a rich harvest.
Olga Vladimirovna Golubkova, Candidate of Historical Sciences, senior researcher at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk, tells.
