MATLAB Minute: using the DHT20 temperature and humidity sensor with an Arduino compatible board

  • The DTH20 temperature and humidity sensor is a very common device used with Arduinos and other electronic devices. It is one of the sensors included in the latest revision of the Seeed Studio Grove Beginner Kit for Arduino.
    Here we show how the sensor can be used in MATLAB using a library created by Mr. Eric Prandovszky in York University's Lassonde School of Engineering.
    The DHT20 values are compared to a previously-calibrated set of mechanical weather instruments from Lee Valley. Not shown in the video, they also closely match the values produced by smart thermostat in the house (an EcoBee). Regardless, students should compare their DHT20 results to a known good source when they use it.

    Note that older revisions of the board have a blue, not black, temperature and humidity sensor. The black one is the DHT20 -- the one shown in this video.
