      Two separate issues here.
I've seen Fel-Pro head gaskets fail numerous times on Subarus.
I didn't realize that the heads/block where chewed up until disassembling the engine.
This case, the poor prep work caused the failure. Other engines, it was merely the Fel-Pro gasket failing. That was the assumption I was going on here before disassembly.

After going through this procedure a few times I decided to buy an Ej207 from an importer installed in my 2002 WRX , I've put 266,000 kilometers on this motor it had 100k when I bought it , replaced turbo inlet , and cam seals in 10 year's , that's it , did a leak down test and the engine is still 140-150 and does not burn or blow by any oil ! I've since bought another Ej207 sitting on a pallet in my garage ......I might never need it , oh ya I'm 67 but I promise you that I test the 8000 rpm redline frequently ! The 207 is a whole different animal !

I’ve use Fel-Pro MLS gaskets on almost every head job I’ve done. To my knowledge, only one failed. It was my own NA engine running 10psi and methanol, which caused head lift. I’ve even got those gaskets in my SOHC STi engine.

Machining the head surfaces is the ideal but I've also had great results from the 3M Roloc Bristle discs (white) which are rated for aluminum surfaces. There was a Subaru Service Bulletin in 2006 that stated that the white bristle disc was an accepted way to prep the surfaces. I'm not sure if there has been contrary guidance released since then.
The caveat with the Roloc Bristle disc is you need a steady hand.

Fail-Pro head gaskets are the worst. I would rather use OEM Subaru head gaskets than Fail-Pros. Guaranteed the mating surfaces on the block and head are warped due to the terrible resurface. At my shop we only use six star head gaskets, and always mill the heads, and resurface the block with 1000 and 1500 grit sand paper, then check the block with a straight edge. Have never had one come back for failed head gaskets out of the hundreds we do every year. Quality parts and properly milling the heads is key to a Subaru head gasket replacement.

This dude deserves credit for his uploads, this gasket is indeed junk but looks like someone applied a sealant to the head gasket as a dark blue trace evidence remains - also not knowing if the decks were machined doesn't help, you have to machine the surfaces to rule out that variable when doing HG's. They blown because they were designed to/Subaru wants them to? So, Subaru only designed the N/A 2.5 head gaskets from 98-2009 to blow? But they designed the 1.8, 2.0 (N/A & turbo), 2.2, 2.5 turbo, 2.7, 3.0, 3.3, 3.6 to work as they should? And they forgot to make them blow head gaskets in MY2010-2020 Subarus?
      Negatory.
The single layer coated N/A 2.5 gaskets fail due to the coating breaking down. I replace them with the WRX/STi MLS gasket. Those gasket don't have failure issues. Put those gaskets on the 2.5 N/A engines and they don't have issues again. The car will rust away before there's another issue with the head gaskets.

I'm a Subaru mechanic and I've installed many Fel-pro gaskets on Subarus including my own.
I have one customer with over 90,000km on the head job and still going strong.
The fault of this engine you are working is due mostly to the head and block prep.

I have what I think is a "comical" subie head gasket story. Like this video I think someone did a quick replacement on the engine at one point, and also because, when I took the head off there was a cotter pin stuck to the top of the valve body. Fortunately it appeared that the pin got stuck into the carbon deposits near the valve and did not disturb any of the valves or score the cylinder walls, my machine shop agreed it was a very lucky situation. I have to think/pray Subaru did not drop a cotter pin into the engine at the factory, but that was very surprising.

Head gaskets haven't been a problem on Subarus since 2009-2012 when the last EJ253 was phased out. The original gasket was a single layer coated gasket. I replace them with the genuine Subaru MLS (multi layer steel) head gasket from the WRX and STi engines. Those gaskets don't have issue like the original single layer coated N/A engine gaskets.

He had to call corporate and they reimbursed him both times after paying out of pocket. I love Subarus, I hate the dealerships though. @billychi6961 Рік тому

I use 400, 600 grit sand paper with a large block sander on the deck turn out very nice. RA units measure roughness. Sometimes if machine shop does not cut the heads at the right speed or uses a worn cutter the surface finish will be rough even though it is considered true. Think of valleys and gaps. If those microscopic peaks are too large they apply alot of pressure unevenly on the gasket and that is another reason gaskets blow out. This is like the bed of nails idea. If you lay on a bed of nails it applies less pressure then laying on just two or three nails. Rollock discs create alot of like micro scratches
