  • We have a total of five calves on the homestead now. Two are on Belle and three are bottle calves. We are raising those three using milk replacer and bottles. This morning we slept in bit, but most mornings we try hard to get a minimum of two feedings 12 hours apart and then a few much smaller feedings in-between. We want them healthy and growing strong so we feed them well and also have pellets and water free choice immediately when we get them.

      They are so beautiful. Such eyelashes, those pink noses, the seeking for the bottle. Just babies, needing what they need

    We just took on a blind 2 week old heifer calf - neighbor has over 1000 cow ranch...no time to bottle feed and a blind calf does not bring him money...was gonna shoot and put down...today is day 3 and getting better at getting her to take the bottle...he did keep her on mom for the two weeks...hoping to grow her up some and then take her to process...adding beef to our homestead...

    It’s a shame they couldn’t be raised properly with their mother. I’m sure you’re doing a good job

    Beautiful. I think of raising bottle fed. Hows the survival rate ?

    • @SimplifiedPiano
      @SimplifiedPiano  6 років тому +3

      mtkadwa so bottle fed are very finicky... This is such a great comment because many people want to raise bottle fed calves but you must watch them very close because they are so app so get sick and die. We have had good luck thus far but you got to be checking on them constantly!! Thanks for watching

    The young stock was my job and the medical records of the herd I miss my little babies lol but only thing you didn't mention is those bottle babies as they grow they want to try to nurse on your fingers (or basically anothing) and once i had one basically inhale my hold hand and their back teeth are like razors lol sliced open one of my fingers with ease like it was tissue papper had to go find my dad covered in blood like hi... I got hurt, i need a quick clean /bandage up so i can finish my chores, i still had 12 more calves to feed and 4 of them where on the other side of the farm lol
    Farm life, slap a bandaid on and go back to work lol

    Half hereford , half angus equals Black Baldie thats what they are called

  • @JJconcrete
    @JJconcrete 3 роки тому

    And we bought one of those bottles like you have on your black Angus and our calf sucks the nipple down flat and sucks all the air out of the bottle so she stops getting the milk I was kind of thinking about maybe poking a little hole in the side of the bottle so it would release more of the milk and not suck all the air out. What do you think about that and did I just get a defective bottle

    • @SimplifiedPiano
      @SimplifiedPiano  3 роки тому

      I have to take it out of the calves mouth when that happens and pinch the nipple to release more air into the bottle. They drink so aggressively and it happens.

    • @SimplifiedPiano
      @SimplifiedPiano  3 роки тому

      I think I would try and make the hole larger that the milk comes out of and see if that fixes the problem.

    How many pints of milk do you give the calf ? I have a jersey calf so far giving him 4 pints in a day. 2 in the morning 2 at night. Not sure if this is enough or should I had another feeding time?

    • @SimplifiedPiano
      @SimplifiedPiano  4 роки тому +2

      Depending on the size of the calf you should be feeding more. It has been a while since we have done this but if the calf is 70 pounds then I would feed in that 7-8 pints and do it in three feedings a day. So say your calf is 60 then you would be fairly close but up it by having a third feeding with two pints. I would really recommend doing a bit of research on this yourself as I’m not a pro by any means but in my mind to make it simple I thought I gave a pint per ten pounds in a day. With three feedings min. And when they are brand new like the first week or two even four is better yet. Good luck and hope this helps.

      maybe you can find a rancher that would let you come out and visit or something? They are mazing and what a fun time for the kids:)

      Go to a thrift store and get a coat, cut the sleeves short and put it on yr calf, front legs into the sleeves. You can use duct tape too. They sell wool calf coats that get raggedy and fall into the soil in chunks, benefitting the soil, but cheepies work too. Stack straw bales for more wind barrier when the wind chill's bad. Feed the milk at 105 degrees (don't guess it's really warm).

      Get a job on a farm, many farms are looking for new employees to help out, I start I think when I was 14 or 15 at a stable, right up the way is where a friend of mine works on a farm caring for calves. They teach you.

      Especially dairies. Beef cattle mother their own calves, dairy cattle are prevented from mothering and wouldn't know how. Plus they give enough milk to drown a calf. So go to a dairy where all calves are bottlefed
