i'd say that's accurate, Vortex leaving the band and Dimmu kind of going away for 10 years definitely shook as well as split the fanbase, i like their new stuff but i DO miss Vortex's angelic chords.
I miss his voice but also his kinda chaotic energy on stage. Even back then, i felt like Shaggrath was kinda lazy on stage, while the rest of the band was killing it... but maybe thats just bias against him because of all the rumors of why Mustis and Vortex left. After years i accepted the fact that yet another band fell apart and i am just sticking to the good old shit, so i dont get salty in the comments or something.
I discovered Dimmu Borgir when I was probably about 13 years old, using Napster. Being the nerdy, naive and innocent band geek that I was at that time, I was searching for a recording of "The Maelstrom" by Robert W. Smith, which is a popular piece of maybe level 1 or level 2 concert band music. Instead, I found "The Maelstrom" by Dimmu Borgir. Now, I had ... NO idea ... what death metal was at that time. I was this sheltered kid who lived in a small town in the midwest, in the middle of the woods who had just gotten internet a few months ago for the first time ever. I mean, I was listening to whatever was on the radio and whatever played in band class. This was the late 90s. I thought the name "Dimmu Borgir" was weird and intriguing to me. So I listened to it...... and holy crap. My mind was blasted open. It was definitely a "this world is much much bigger than you've previously known" kind of moment for me. What a rabbit hole Napster was, within the context of that period of time.
I LOVE Dimmu Borgir but it's always they're biggest commercial hits getting the attention even though they have beautiful masterpieces that get overlooked. "The Insight and the Catharsis" is a prime example. The haunting clean vocals from Vortex and the incredible atmosphere from Mustis on the keys and synths take you to another world 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I love how Shagrath replicated Abbath's vocals for the second verse, considering that Abbath contributed his vocals for two songs on "Death Cult Armageddon"
My favourite band as well. I'm able to enjoy every album and EP they've ever released, even though they're style has changed many times. From the melancholic vibe of their first EP and first 2 albums, to Shagrath's demonic shrieks in Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, to Vortex's amazing clean vocals from Spiritual Black Dimensions to In Sorte Diaboli, to the insanely complex and tight drumming of Nick Barker on Puritanical and Death Cult, there's something for everyone. 🤘
Hellyeah this is a great one, Shagrath's vocals certainly have a very throaty action going on (btw nice brief throat singing dude, you're pretty good at it for the little bit you've said to have done), Vortex's cleans are almost effortless, so glad I saw this lineup several times back in the day. We need more BM reaction and analysis vids! Want to see you do Attila w/ Mayhem (the "Watchers" music vid is so good), and so many more (Wiegedood, Mispyrming, Akhlys, Marduk, and on and on!).

So glad to have found these Black Metal videos you published. There isn't a lot of "proper" education on these kinds of vocals. Your videos on the topic are gold worth.

i had the pleasure of attending this concert my sophmore year of hs. It was in san antonio, and if memory serves me correct, it was over 100 degrees that day and they played at around 5 pm (with all that leather, studs, and paint on). Absolutely killer set! Only got the opportunity to attend 3 ozzfests (03, 04, and 07) but this was the best lineup of the ones that i attended. Slipknot closed the second stage, and Dimmu, Slayer, Judas Priest (with the return of Rob Halford) and Black Sabbath killed the main stage.
Yoo Mark. Have you ever heard "Attila Csihar"? He has been Mayhem's Vocalist for a long time now and has been in a lot of other projects. He has vocals that are absolutely outside the box. Maybe you want to listen to him.
I might not look like that, but Dimmu Borgir have been and continue to be my 1st love, when it comes to the so called Symphonic Black Metal. I fell in love with them back in 1998, when "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" had been released - listened to it once, got hooked right away. I loved your explanations, I as an absolute no singer could understand the technique Shagrat seems to use quite good. With Progenies of The Great Apocalypse being one of my alltime favorite pieces by Dimmu Borgir, I am thankfull for both: your reaction and you making me listen to that very song unexpectedly today, which made me very happy ❤(yes, this kind of music can make one happy). p.s. Nightwish should have hired Vortex to replace Marko. At least in that way they would have had a metal singer to sing Marko's parts. I know that Jukka Koskinen (Marko's replacement from Wintersun) also has pretty good vocals, but still they ended up to give more vocal parts to Troy, who is a decent singer, but has no rock or metal qualities in his voice...so maybe they just want to go more towards this symphonic folk metal now...which is very sad.
Shagrath was a shithead when I met him...he didn't want to sign my 7"record. Silenoz was awesome we talked a while...vortex was cool. I did not get to meet mustis and Nichols.
I don't mind the band shirt thing that's your symbol kind of like how ancient clans wear symbols that represent them on their armor or how mario wears a red M on his hat or if you work for a company your shirt with the logo represents that company it's such a dumb argument when people say you shouldn't wear your own band shirt.

I can go on and on but thanks for this specific video, I always try to get reactors to do this song since it has the PEAK of Dimmus artist all in one minus 1 of that being Nick Barker former Cradle of filth Drummer and now Brujeria drummer.
Please do Diamonds To Dust song Corpus Christi.
Vortex earned the right to wear his own bands shirt.
Please do a video on cannibal corpse hammer smashed face live
Have u done any reaction of other norwegian black metal bands? Or any other norwegian metal bands?
Love your channel, so educational.
Best regards from Norway
Only dimmu, check his videos
What’s the name of the song in your opener
architects pls
Lol Corey from Trivium almost always wears a Trivium shirt. I have no issue with it
Holup, Invaluable live? was king doing the cleans on that one?
Singing or acting, the answer is: It Does Not Matter :)
Death core? wait.. how do I cancel my like? Just joking, but seriously, keep up just the good work.
Shagrath was a shithead when I met him...he didn't want to sign my 7"record. Silenoz was awesome we talked a while...vortex was cool. I did not get to meet mustis and Nichols.
Silenoz was the better vocalist, should have kept shagrath back on the drums.
He seems like a very insecure guy… there’s not much about him online though. I’m not sure.
If you like Dimmu Borgir you should react to Carach Angren.
I discovered carach angren just last year and really enjoy the funerary dirge of a violinest...
@@mgdrud4605 love that song. That was actually the first song I heard by them.
I miss Vortexs voice so much. But I'm still a Dimmu fan. There's too many fickle fans out there.
About wearing your own band's shirts: Iron F🤬🤬🤬ing Maiden do it all the time. Case closed. 🤘
Yeah, Metal vocalists should join the BEEEEANS TikTok thing, there's some really cool stuff going on there!
It's not inaccurate to say that this was _nearly 20 years ago_
