My dad had a stroke 1 week ago, I'll view these videos and assist him in his recovery.
I had a stroke back in March I’m still getting inpatient rehab these videos are excellent when I’m not in my rehab session so i still strengthen my body on my own to get out of this hospital faster. My left side is the affected side and it is so frustrating
I’m 6 years out from my stroke and am so happy I just found your videos. They are very helpful- thank you!
So thankful for these videos I had a stroke six weeks ago and before I ever got completely diagnosed my wife and I found these videos online and we started doing these exercises even before they diagnose me because we could tell all the symptoms And so when I got to physical and occupational therapy They said that the fact that I was doing these exercises ahead of time really helped in my progression I had absolutely no use of my right side for several weeks in now that I'm back to doing the exercises I'm ahead of the ball Thank you again
Way to go! I had mine 6 weeks ago and today I stood up my myself using a hospital gadget but on my own for half a minute…I feel like I’ve won a school prize! Trouble is the physios will make media minute tomorrow and it hurt like mad!
Actually these are all great exercises, not just after stroke, but for everyone anytime. And well demonstrated! Merely for the hip rotation I would say, be careful, don't overly twist your lower back.
Working with my 82yo mom (post ischemic stroke - 5months) and for both of us hearing your 'voice of authority' confirm what we've been doing her has been a great help - at least I now know my layman's understanding of the body is spot on. Now for mom to continue to allow us to continue with the exercises.
2 days and I can already see improvements in my grandfather...Thank you so much Doctor!😊😊😊
@femmazurita, That is amazing! I'm so happy to hear that❤️
Thank you for taking time out to make this video for free , thank you.
Thank you Dr for what you do in this channel
Thank you for making video! Will try to do excercises had stroke 4wks ago, left arm& leg very weak, hopefully will help to get back to near normal sooner rather then later
Hi Deborah,
Had it six months ago which left my right arm numb and unable to do almost anything so had to use my left one which was very hard. Right leg was also affected and weak. I improved a lot by following Elyse’s Post Stroke exercises. Arm recovered quickly and is back to normal although it remains a bit weaker than the left one. Leg improved too, but I still have some balance issues.
Keep your hopes strong and have trust in your improvement/recovery.
Warm wishes
Dr. I am sooo thankful for these videos. May God continued to Bless you in sharing, these exercises.

So beautiful and resourceful..😊 Thank you...
the leg raise I've been trying for several years, had a massive stroke June 2011 but cant make it work for me my weak leg shakes uncontrolably when lifting it. Which is discouraging. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make these vids, I for one due to certain life circumstances don't have access to a physiotherapist. So doing it on my own with self treatment and bed exercises. I just wish you where nearby. I could use your help. Its hard to do stroke recovery on your own.
@deondewit, Thanks for sharing and for the kind words! Yes, it can be really hard to work on recovery when you don't have a strong support system (with family or with formal therapy). I hope that you continue to find my videos helpful though! ❤️
Hello mam thank you so much for sharing the above video. Problem i face is i can't both raise or flex my limbs. Need some one help for the same. Please teach me how to flex my limbs on my own. Awaiting reply angel ❤❤❤
@@PostStrokeOrgthere is something i want to ask if you dont mind. Email/whatsap
Sorry my dear ones, for sure it's hard on your own. But God is with you. Believe all will be well.
Let's not forget it's a stroke wedealing with. After a year and half anytime I move or raise my weak leg the affected hand goes up automatically. Looks like I cannot detach my leg from my hand. They always move together. Any help pls
Thank you so very much. My foot has no movement at all so am not able to do the last three exercises. How do I get the foot to move please?
Good day Madame
Very nice and strengthen exercise.
Two years back with an accident, I was unconscious by a blood clot in skull nerve. I almost recovered everything with my self confidence.
My foot ankle in SPASTICITY, by dorsiflexion (down).
Thanks for your help.
What more exercises to walking balancefully?
Thank you again.
We need to learn these exercises for mt degree
This leg exersice the way you do it is for normal person you don’t focus on the limitation that we all have yes you talk about it but you continue for a person with no limitations
ty kind hooman
God bless 🙏 Doctor this exercise is good for my stroke thanks
شكرا جزيلا
Very good 😊, like my, thank you
@jamilibrahim, So welcome! 😊
Can you give some information on how to straighten a contracted spastic leg, that will only get to about 80 to 90 degrees and stops
After my stroke, I have pain in the opposite leg … not the leg that was affected by the stroke. Will the exercises work on this side as well?
This is much better and doable
❤️
Great Video, Going to try these with Mom (89), anything similar for shoulder/arm/hand in bed please? Many thanks
@cheryldance, Awesome! I don't have any arm exercises in bed (but thank you for that idea!). My arm and hand stretches for spasticity video (ua-cam.com/video/_ELCjpovYTk/v-deo.html) may be helpful. It shows some ways she can use her unaffected arm to passively move her affected arm. Hope you find it helpful and that you both are doing well ❤️
Hi Thanks, just played the video, looks great, and certainly worth a try - Many thanks
@cheryldance, You're so welcome! Let me know what you think 😊
I am post bleed stroke for 1 year. Do you have any recommendations for knee hypertension. Thank you for all the great videos.
Awesome videos thank you.
Great exercise, however 3 years into hemorrhagic stroke and I still cannot do even the slightest ankle inversion/eversion, what's your suggestion?
Excellent 👏 thank you 😊
@zoranpopovic, You're so welcome ❤️
I wish I had access to these videos after my stroke. It's been 6 yrs now & I'm not able to do most of these exercises
Thanx it really strength my legs but when i try to walk the brain is walking after the leg movement and i see that the brain is shaking ...
Thank u i had strock 10month ago,its realy slow healing i dont nkow if am going to walk again 😢
You're so welcome! The not knowing can be really difficult. I hope you continue to have access to therapy!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@grakshan, :)
2 months ago i had bike accident i got stroke on that time now i well but my left leg has become heavy please suggest me what should i do to get it normal
i m having AVM , due to seizures, my left side is weak n i hv alot of issue due to fingers grip, kindly guide about fingers grip ....thanks
Wonderful video! I have a question... When you demonstrate an exercise on the affected leg, should we also do it on the unaffected leg, so both sides get the work? Or just the affected side?
@carolehiebert, This is great question! I'd encourage you to work both legs. You'll end up working on stabilizing muscles in your affected leg when moving the unaffected leg and visa versa :) Thanks for asking!
can the patient be doing this passively? the patient lost control of the left side limb, both arm and legs
I had a stroke in may and the muscles in my right leg have atrophied. Can I build the muscles back with weight training?
I had a stroke just 5 months back. Your leg lifting looks easy...but trying to do that..my knee gives up, my leg is never straight. How do I get a lock on my knee?
Hello I have been watching your videos on UA-cam.
My mom had had tumor excision surgery and her left side is affected. She can move her leg but no hand movements. yet.
She can't walk well and she has knee hyperextension
I wish you could record a video to improve leg muscles to prevent hyper extension and improve walking. She can't also balance her trunk and core
@navidhasani, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I hope that she is healing okay from her surgery and that you both are well. Thank you for your suggestion!
@@PostStrokeOrg Do you have any suggestions for me?
My affected side is on the left leg but I have trouble to go away to my left. Any way to help
But I'm definitely alot stronger than when I started. Do you have any videos to help combat spasticity in the left arm. Although I've be getting botox in my arm I try to extend my arm but it gets locked up at the elbow making it hard for me to straighten my effected arm out
I do! There are actually several different stretching videos for spasticity you can find in my Stroke Recovery Exercise playlist ☺️
Hi Dr Elyse...I have a question Will these exercises work on a patient 3 years post stroke?please reply
@thegmshow, Great question! Luckily, our brains are capable of adapting and changing throughout our lifetime, even after a stroke. You can definitely try these exercises 3 years post stroke, as long as you're cleared by your doctor. Here is a video you may find helpful that talks about how progress can happen long after a stroke occurs: ua-cam.com/video/PUfW-CySHas/v-deo.html
ربنا أفرغ علينا صبرا وثبت أقدامنا. سورة 2
Hi! I had a stroke(hemiplegia, left side, 2007) 14 years ago but tho I have been working semi normally, i.e., I work full time, move around effectively, but awkwardly. I cant drive but can walk about 2 -3 kms at a stretch.
My gait is awful, affected leg strength is weak and getting worse however hard I try. I am 72, in pain most of the time, but I dont seem to be getting near normal in walk and strength. I am determined to get back on a tennis court and a golf course. Can you help or suggest something? I mean exercises specific to my situation. I live in India.
I'm sorry you are having a set back. That must be very frustrating. Unfortunately, I can make any specific recommendations due to legal licensure requirements. If you have the ability, I'd talk with your doctor about the pain issues and setbacks you've been experiencing.
I'm in the same shape. 67. Living in Mexico. Just keep moving....Dr. Tara Tobias on UA-cam offers quality rehab videos, too (she's in Florida, USA)
If there is a music. Version, they may Want to do it.
Maybe a few different track videos. ❤👍👍🎈
For After.learning, here..
Could I use arm to assist knee bend in heel slides? THat is only modification I could come up with.
I have foot drop from the past 8 yrs I am unable to take up my foot. Please let me know what kind of exercise i have perform.
You may find this video on foot drop helpful! ua-cam.com/video/Q2o-IMXAOKs/v-deo.html
I wear an AFO on my affected leg, should I keep it on or take it off for these?
@pameladavies, great question! The answer is always, "It depends." haha. You could try without the AFO first and see if you're able to work through the movements. If it's too difficult, put the AFO back on! :)
@@PostStrokeOrg Thank you I will have to try when my husband is home. I can put the AFO on myself but not the shoes. hard to get the shoe on over the AFO & tie up the shoe one handed.
I could not pull my affected leg when sliding, can I use the left leg to help out?
@doty.5822 Yes! A general recommendation I make is to use your unaffected side if you need to, but make sure you're still activating your affected limb to get the most benefit 😊 Talk with your doctor or therapist if you have any concerns or questions!
I use a strap to assist raising my leg. Is that OK?
Madam ask you how to fix a rotating legs
I had massive stroke it helps to walk me to other rooms in house
Is it good for sci
My knee does not remain straight what I should do
Elyse, butterfly exercise is too painful for affected side. Shall I stop doing that?
My general recommendation is to not push through pain! ❤️
