- This rare tape recording is exclusive to this channel. It was recorded by us and shared by us. The original SASAS (Skibadee, Shabba D & Shockin B). DJ Trend had recently joined London's premier DNB pirate station Kool FM 94.5. Trend was part of TNT (DJ Target and DJ Trend). He was originally part of east London's Rinse FM 91.8 and became famous for co-producing the Jungle anthem "2 Degrees" at the age of 19. At the time he was a teenage sensation. 2 Degrees was recently remixed by Low Down Deep Recordings, Dominator, who sadly passed away. Trend's DJing career was also taking off in a big way, in the year that followed, DJ Trend was getting booked in the main arena of top events like: Pure Science @Canterbury Tales, Friday 18th Sept 1998.
On 17th Sept 2010, DJ Trend sadly passed away on his 32nd birthday. The scene was rocked by his loss. Rest In Peace DJ Trend (Gifford Noel).
This was the original SASAS, which came about way before SASASAS. It consisted of MCs Skibadee, Shabba D and Shockin B. Shabba and Shockin were known for doing shows on Weekend Rush 92.3 FM which was based in Hackney's Nightingale Estate. Check the channel out for their shows in early 90s.

@@TakeMeBackPirateRadio thank you for your kind words, but honestly, the talent credit goes to Gifford 100%. We were introduced via his girlfriend at the time, we both attended the same college, and she asked if I could sing because her boyfriend was looking for a singer. I just jumped at the opportunity as a excited 17 year old who had no experience in singing. I did a studio session and he created that track and the rest is history. I am proud of it, but mostly I'm just grateful to have been lucky enough to work with an absolute legend! I still have my original Vinyl copy. 👌

There was a legendary tape we lost forever from this time. It was Christmas Day SASAS on Kool. Pretty sure it was ‘97. Don’t suppose you’ve got it in your archive?

The designer got the date wrong, it's meant to be Dec 1997 which I changed in the title, unless you're talking about another set which I can ask around our circle to see if anyone has. Can you remember the DJ or DJs? We still have tens of Kool FM uploads but there's a backlog. Our Kool FM playlist has over 100 vids at the moment you can also check that out for more hidden gems. Skiba sounded unbelievable back then. Everything on point and clear as crystal. Hyper D was the guy in the sense nobody was doing what he did when he first came in the scene. He was going double time and was so ahead of his time. For me though if I had to choose which one at there best I would say Skibadee. He was so good at deciding when to go quicker and when to go slower.
Spot on!! Totally agree with what you're saying. Hyper D was leagues above the rest. I think Skiba became more about flow and speed. I really liked how versatile Hyper D was. To be honest you've gotta love and respect all the various styles and different types of MCs, from GQ, to Bassman, Ragga Twins, Navigator, Fearless...and so on. I think Trends debut on Kool was actually a back-to-back-to-back with Pugwash and Profile on 1st Nov 1997. He'd played his set on Rinse 91.8 the Saturday before. It was an all night session with loads of DJs and MCs. Teka MC made his comeback on the station that night too. Trend dropped 2 degrees 2, one of the first times it had been played on radio and it got 3 rewinds! Happy to share the recordings, have two full TDK 90s from that night already digitised to MP3

From those early shows with Wildchild in 96 through to hearing him tear up the Stratford Rex at my first "proper" rave in 97 (Kool 6th birthday) Skiba was such a huge part of my youth. Whenever he came onstage at a rave waves of people would rush to the front. Smashing up hundreds of raves big and small over the years. Also loved seeing Skiba and Det perform 2 x Freestyle at a small venue behind Charing X Rd. Pure memories. RIP Skibadee

Real talk. He was a different breed 95 - 98. Bare clear, articulate, popping all over the beat.
Later it was like it was all about fitting as many syllables in a bar as possible. I think Ecksy was snapping at the heels, still got love for Skibbs all day tho. That SASAS Funky Flirt era was Kools peak IMO.
Impossible to quantify his influence on so many artists in numerous genres.

This set is absolutely banging. I remember when Kool was 94.5 - Seems like an eternity ago. I used to sit round my Nan's in East Ham (I lived right out on the Essex Coast) with the radio on. Used to take my stereo up there and record radio shows regularly. Got some banging Dream 107.6 tapes. I used to listen to Conflict 89.4 a lot and I used to listen to Kool quite a bit

I feel your pain bruva!! You wrote a heartfelt message. I had the pleasure of working with Skiba many times and he always let DJs work and gave his time for new up and coming MCs and sharing the platform with them. A lot MCs owe their careers to him and that without even touching on how much he inspired MCs and the craft of MCing not just on Jungle DNB, but also UK Garage and Grime. We have a lot of rare sets of his from as far back as 1995 and just seeing the growth and development of his career is still something incredible. Respect for your comment!! Long Live Skibadee!!

The funny thing is back then me and my friends would debate about who was better between skibbs and Shabba but listening now there really was no contest. Skibba was just another level.
For real!! Skiba had tweaked his style to a tee. Shabba was still developing but still brought a lot hype. Shabba did a lot freestyles and made mistakes but it's all part of the entertainment and bettering his craft as pirate radio was his outlet to train himself pretty much like an athlete in the gym. Skiba was on time like Swiss clockwork and had some German engine he was on a need for speed and could do it with great ease. Effortless flows at break neck speeds. So many haters forget what he did, how he changed the game and raised the bar. To compare him to modern MCs is silly because he pioneered that style which then became the norm and allowed for newbies to pick up and develop. Many appropriated what he built. I think what's lacking in DNB today is a variety of styles.

When he touched mic at raves the crowd would go nuts. Definitely a big influence on the new wave of MCs that followed. There's a lot haters out there but when Shabba first jumped on the scene he loved by all the ravers and he owned it.

It's cut me so deep. I knew Skiba and worked with him at events in the late 90s and 2000s. It's come as shock to me. We all lost a pioneer and true inspiration 💔

People don't know if any of you can help me but I've been looking for an old tape pack I used to own, and either way lost the tapes lent out, but never forgot it it was a heat pack and there was only 6tapes in the pack I'm pretty sure it was at Hastings pier. Can't find it some please help me
