Having won both the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open and the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, Jon Rahm heads into the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open with the pedigree and form to challenge for another trophy. The Spaniard has had a blistering start to 2023, winning twice already on the PGA TOUR at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and again at The American Express last week. Luke List returns to the event after a dramatic finish saw him claim his first and only title on the PGA TOUR to date, edging out Will Zalatoris in a playoff. Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele are just some of the other names that make up an incredibly strong field in San Diego this week.

I remember when I was in HS, a buddy of mine qualified for the Junior Worlds here (dude was a stud and shot 59 at our home course AT LEAST twice) and was happy to just break 80. Torrey is insanely tough.
I was a very good golfer in the early 2000's on my local courses and carried 2 handicap for a while.. BUT, when I played Winged Foot, Merion, East Lake, Atlanta Athletic Club, Medina, and TPC Sawgrass, I was humbled beyond belief! Those are big boy courses! Merion, especially. Every shot out of real rough was a pitch out! 😅 Being a local legend is meaningless. I submit!!!!!
@@steve4158 pretty crazy that you emphasized Merion when it's by far the shortest of the courses you listed... I can't imagine the accuracy it demands lol
@TBlev Thanks for your knowledge. Merion is one of the greatest shorter courses in the world. Justin Rose won the US Open there at 1 over par. All this talk about the ball going too far is overrated. Courses like Merion will always be relevant. Most tour courses are set up for low scores. To negate that, pinch the fairways, grow the rough, and speed up the greens. However, the pros would call foul every week. Harbortown is still relevant! Side note: Bobby Jones won the Grand Slam there, and his scorecard is enshrined on the wall. We played with the course historian, and he took us behind the scenes to see
all the famous trophies and clubs pros donated to win championships there. I had Lou Grahms putter in my hands which he used to win the Open. It was fascinating, and I was so lucky. By the way, the sixth green was redesigned for the Open because the USGA thought it was too severe for the pros!
This is what courses should be like for all pro tournaments.... that is why they are pros. Leave easy conditions on courses for amateurs, like us.
Watching the pros struggle with the Kikuyu rough puts a smile on my face. It's no joke and gave me the chipping yips for a few years after living in San Diego. Glad I moved and don't have to deal with it anymore lol
I’ve played at Torrey twice in the past few months as they were prepping for farmers 2023. The rough is BRUTAL.
One of the only games where a pro can duff a shot like a 30 handicap and no one think twice about it
You know a +30 handicap would be shooting in the 40’s. It’s just a 30 handicap
U mena 30 handicap, + handicap means under par. Like John Rahm is like a +11 handicap
@@graymccrea354 yes you are correct
Also it’s the only game that makes a pro humble 😅
I personally think every PGA tournament should be like this. There must be adventages if you hit more fairways and greens
There is, rough like this is just silly though. I want to see the top golfers playing not hacking it around poorly designed courses.
there will be but you still have to put the ball in the hole.
TP is just not that tough...you have to play the course you are on.
@@WilliamStewart1 it is not that hard and you are generalizing from a few bad shots
I was at 5 when John Rham whiffed those 2 chips. Spanish obscenities were streaming from his mount his entire stomp to the next hole 🤣. Crazy thing to witness!
On TV we saw him glare back at someone in the crowd. Did you happen to hear what was said?
@@HughJorgan1 Rahm like to glare at fans and the camera although he doesn't do it as much as he used to
He speaks Spanish?
One of us! One of us!
Only Tiger can play out of that rough!!
I've played at Torrey Pines... yea it's brutal just going from rough to rough to bunker, until you just decide to lay up or pretend that you hit the best shot ever because you're holding up the pace of play. Still worth it though, it's beautiful there
thanks i feel much better😮💨
I always love these. Let’s me
Know even the pros mess up a lot. Puts everything in perspective.
This is how difficult every PGA Tour event should be. I don't want to see everyone 20 under at the end
Idk, occasionally it's cool to see tour pros tear apart a scoreable course.
If they did that, you would see the same pros at the top.
@@armike234 only good players would win, which is how it should be
The cream will always rises to the top. No matter how difficult the course.
20 under is good for TV
That’s how the us open is
These clips are oddly comforting 😅
Looks like my typical Sunday afternoon round 😅
This 8 minute video looks like highlights of me playing 18 at a scorable course
ONE OF US!!
Miracle of miracles - some proper hazards on the PGA tour. You know what you don’t like jacking out the rough? Don’t play it in there. Stay out the bunkers. Hazards should be penalties. Who wants to see John Rahm shot 8 under every round. More please. Commentator was spot on - these are supposed to be the best players in the world. If you can’t drive it straight or manage your way round the golf course then you can’t be that good.
Hi how are you doing
Wow some interesting shots
Torrey absolutely chewed up guys this weekend. Rydr had a rough last day
this is so iconic...
Sweet Golfers
Usually we see the magic shot but for sure most are not, this seeing the fails was just as entertaining.
one of us one of us gooooooble gobble goooble gobble
True skill test this course. Rough was killing these dudes scores
Rough so tough it seems but in a way glad some challenge!!
I'd be happy with half of these
Pro finally play local course that is worthy of a challenge. At least this course has nice fairway and greens 😂
Love to LOV
LIV to love
Corny.
US Open rough. If they let the greens go (no water, short), and they start rolling 14, nobody is under par. The South is very long from the tips, too.
It’s the music for me.
Remember when Rahm hit it OB, got a free drop… then won the US Open?
Insane club twirl on the first shot 😅
That last shot for Rahm with the ball sitting in the divot sounds like it would have been fun to play,.....
Those were sprinkler heads. Would be a little weird to see divots the size of those only feet from the flag
That is the thickest rough I’ve ever seen 😮
0:15 I legit thought that went in the hole
I was laughing at most of this but MAN you did Sam Ryder dirty at 2:37 with that music! ☠
One thing that would never happen to me, spinning a shot off the green! 😅
Hardest course on tour!
More courses need to grow the rough out like Torrey and Bay Hill. Tired of seeing 20 under. Punish them.
I agree, but the viewing experience is not great when the ball is completely buried under the grass
20 under is good for TV
I will be honest seeing the pros struggle makes me not feel so bad about my own game.
I'm all for tough golf courses but I am dead against good shots being punished.
I’d really like events to be this challenging for pros it makes it more relatable for the average golfer and produces the best product imho, I’d rather see these guys fighting for -4 to even par than see them -21
All the guys chunking shots out of the rough looking down like they’d never hit it out of rough before.
The rough is like 4 inches deep and super thick... you have no idea how much the ball is going to come out, it's just a guessing game.
All they have to do is come over to my house and practice in my yard if they want to get better at hitting out of horrendous rough 😆😆
Make golf hard again
I'd like to play this hard courses just to experience just how bad those roughs are. The roughs where I'm from aren't too bad but hitting a ball in the rough on the courses that these players play on. It's like the grass is gripping onto the golf ball.
I now watched some PGA Pros absolutly unable to cope with that kind of rough you find at every second amateur course in Europe.
There are zero amateur courses with rough like that. And the winner was -13 over the week. An amateur would be grateful to have a score total less than 400 in these conditions.
So they are human hahaha 🤣
If I was that bad from the rough I’d try a little harder to hit the fairway.
Alot of blasting out the sand trap in this one.
I hope Ryder didn't pay for those pants!
Lol you are so funny, how are you doing
The rough should always be like this, even if you have to widen fairways and greens a little bit. Rough should be rough.
Oh that's why Jon Rahm didn't win. Funny, I found that more interesting than the highlights.
The title of this video should be : Rough is hard
You should change the title to "Golf is ROUGH at Torrey Pines".
Torrey's rough was rough
When ur in the video 🎉
When normal golfers talk about “this is how every tournament should be set up” it’s hilarious. These are the best golfers in the world, playing the toughest conditions in the world. Shooting a 74 is disgusting to them, even in these conditions. An amateur playing these conditions would be lucky to break 100. Just because you suck at golf on a muni course with no rough and greens the speed of these fairways, doesn’t mean PGA tour events should have unfair setups just so you can get your kicks watching tour pros hit bad shots.
Now I don't feel so bad about my short game.
Ryder found out it’s hard to tap into your super powers while wearing lady pants.
Amen!!! I’m tired of seeing these “guys” wearing (ladies) pants.
@@normansmith3489 they’re joggers. Sorry nobody is wearing ladies bell bottoms anymore like they did in the 70s
These roughs are too thick. Sheesh
welcome to a casual amateur golf course lads.
What kind of amateur golf courses are you playing?? I've maybe played in rough similar to that twice in my life, and both were in tournaments.
over 7800 yards with rough near impossible to get out of, yeah golf will be hard..
The crazy thing is, is how average and really not bad of shots those were and how absolutely terrible they turned out. I don't think players around 90-100 realize how hard these conditions are since all conditions are hard for them. I don't think an average golfer would walk away with less than 70 strokes on 9 holes.
I remember feeling like I eating kryptonite on every shot! 330 yards in Arizona was 275-280 on the ocean... shot 78 on the south putting out of my mind that day... They did not let me play the back tee only as far as they let me... 82 on the North the next morning...
Please don't play my way
It's about time that american courses were a proper challenge. It's ridiculous seeing people 300 under every week. Maybe if Finau wore proper golf shoes, his feet wouldn't slip.
I'm all for rough being rough but that's just ridiculous
やっぱ、めっちゃめっちゃ難いやん…
the groundskeepers woke up and chose violence
hahaha if every pga course was like this golf wouldnt look as magestic. get rekt.
Liv is ruining this tour idk hardly anyone on the leaderboards anymore
Wouldn’t happen to Tiger.
Oooch.....no thanks.
They suck
Ike everyone else when the course challenge them
Watch John Rahm at 6.42 prefer his lie, he places the club head at least 5 times behind the ball at address, I acknowledge that he is not applying significant downward pressure nevertheless given the number of times he places the club-head behind the ball is a clear infringement. If I was playing him for money I would call him out without fail.
One that rollled off unfair , and rediculous!!
After first day with this Rough, i canceld the Tournament 🤔
Nothing to do, with golf🙄
That's not rough that's Jungle. Might have better results using a machete.
Yes that’s true and how are you doing
It's better on the LIV tour
