Hi Everyone,
In today's video I wanted to talk to you about Air-Pots and air pruning containers! I used one when I planted a shade container, and you guys said you wanted to learn more about them, so I hope this video helps. I have been using Air-Pots for several years, and I love them! I think if you're going to have a tree or plant in a container for several years, these air pruning containers are a must! I was watching a Judo Dench documentary on trees last night on PBS. A friend gave her a tree in memory of a friend who had recently died. And it was in an air pot! I felt so smart to now know what I was looking at 😆😆 This is such a new product for me and other gardener friends (I forwarded your video to some others).

Hmmm! Very interesting!!!🤔 I have never seen anything like that. It makes a lot of sense though, especially if you are going to be growing a container garden (which sadly is the way I have to do a lot of my gardening anymore); or as you are doing w/ growing & propagating larger fruit trees (which is not good for them to have that bound root system that you get w/ other pots).
I agree with you 100%. I couldn’t believe the difference in the root structure using them of compared to when they’re in a regular nursery container. I just have to water more with these containers as they dry out quicker.

Thank you for your interesting video! I have just bought some Air-Pots and was looking for useful information wIhen I found your channel. I have an old fig tree which I want to propagate so love the idea of using these pots for it. Can I ask what is the variety of fig you have in the video? I thought it sounded like 'Esher' or something...?

Were the 2 in their pots for the same amount of time? Because that air pruning pot looks amazing.
Weirdly enough, I actually feel like the air pot fig is actually a bit less root bound than the other pot?
Idk if it's because there's more root branching, so there's more internal root mass instead of external root mass around the pot, but it looks like there's far more soil than in the typical pot.

Thank you for this information can you share a good potting mixture for an air pot? For figs and for citrus trees?
Thank you so much. I typically have great success with a pitting soil that has a good amount of perlite. If it doesn’t, I would add some cactus soil to my potting soil. I would do this for regular pots, but for air pots, since there is already such good drainage and airflow to roots, I dont go above and beyond by adding extra drainage. A good potting mix will suffice. Good luck!

Absolutely! Remember to fertilize, make sure it’s a container big enough for them to thrive in.

is that how the branch on the bottom looks after how many weeks on the fig in the air pot?
For long term what pots do you recommend. I am in se Florida where the sandy soil is horrible and lots of nematodes.
I think air pots are a good long term solution. I think because you live in a warmer climate, you may just need to water more often. If you’re planning to keep trees in containers, just make sure they are big enough for your trees to grow in long term. This means you may need to up pot some trees or plants every couple of years.
When planting dahlias in the ground, what can go in with them to create better drainage?
Are you talking about amending your soil? If so, try to buy Sandy loom, I’ve noticed after amending. Our soil was Sandy loom our Dahlia do so much better.

Absolutely. 😊 I have used them many times in larger decorative containers. It makes it so much easier to change out containers.

Hello , I am having huge collection of about 50 Plant of Hibiscus in various pot size 14 and 16 inch respectively. So as you said that growth in air pot is much faster and more. So my Question is can i shift my few hibiscus plant from normal pot of 14 in to Air pot of 14 inch. is it advisable please guide. will my plant grow more healthy and fast . please share your Experience with us. Thank you for watching. 🥰 I just water them like I would any container, directly on top.
you will water it more frequently as the container acts like a big screen and drys out faster. make sure you address run off if it builds in the saucer. if you don’t the roots won’t air prune and drink the stagnant run off. i have used these for over a decade. they last forever. watering has a little nuance but worth it. you can also bottom water and because of the holes it works great. just need a big enough container. 😃

Absolutely! We’ve brought in our citrus trees several times. Just make sure you have a grow light for them.

Hi Vivienne, sorry for the delayed response, our schedules were a little crazy this last week.
So you can definitely grow figs in the air-pot long term. You’ll have to keep your eye on watering and nutrients because it will lose water more quickly than your other traditional containers. Also, you’ll want to make sure that you’re feeding it during the growing season- once a month with a good organic fertilizer, one that feeds the soil. I like a Citrus-tone. Let me know if that helps or if you have more questions. 💕

I wonder could you plant these pots in the ground to restrict the roots or even to restrict the roots from getting large
That’s a interesting thought Chris. 🤔 The point of air pots is to help air prune which encourages better growth. So if it’s in the ground I feel like those roots would just continue to grow. Now this could potentially be used to protect a root structure from critters who eat the roots of trees. For example there are some scenarios where people will actually use chicken wire around the rootball of trees when planting to prevent certain animals from eating them up. Does that make sense?
Yeah and thank you for your reply it could be a potential to plant in the ground especially for trees you could control the size of them that way I might give it a go no harm in trying experiment and see. Many thanks and keep up the great videos

Hi Helain, sorry for the delayed response I just saw this. How big are your trees? I think a 10 gallon would be good start if you have an established tree. If you plan on having it produce a lot of fruits, I would even go bigger. 🥰

You can use a plastic strainer basket (the ones we use to wash vegetables) as air pots. I saw a video in which someone was growing strawberry in those. The basket has holes all around. I am going to try air pruning with that. Hope that helps.

How do plants handle the high heat (95-100F) in an air-pot?
Tomato plants do not do well with heat that high.
Will the air-pots make the plants cooler or warmer in the hot heat and sun?
I just adjust watering as needed. When its hotter the plants tend to dry our faster, so I may water twice a day and vice versa. 😊
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia problem is that here when it is that hot, it is also high humidity.
Plants can't transpire very well.

Yes, some of them dry out very quickly and others remain soggy.
I made home made drippers with IV drip lines to give steady water.
Still had problems.
Best moisture control I have is a hugelgarden. Hardly have to water that one but still have the same problem with high heat and humidity (wind too).
I will have to try those pots again next year.
Need a way to kill off any fungus/disease that may be in the soil used though.
An inverted wine bottle works very well with maintaining moisture. But even that can be problematic.
I even used home made Ollas (those work fairly well but they too have their issues).
I won't know the extent of the root system until after the first hard freeze this year.
Heart me in about 5-6 weeks and I will let you know.

Before shelling out all that money for those expensive air pots, try using a grow bag.
Oh I agree with you 100%. I have used the bags before, I’m definitely a fan. However I like the Air-pots because they are sturdier, last forever, and I love them for trees. Do you have a brand of grow bags that you like best?
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia The 'boss' aka wife bought 4 potato grow bags. This is the first time using them.
For air pots, I drilled 2.5" holes in 5 gal buckets, lined with weed block, and filled them.
I made a mistake and used the wrong soil in them but they did work to a degree.
Wrong soil meaning it compacted too easily.
I would like to try a real air pruning pot but they cost an arm and a leg to buy (the ones that are black and points all over it).
I would want about a 7 gal one. 5gal is barely enough to do a tomato plant.
10 gal might be too big.
My research into grow bags are a mixed blessing.
Some rot quickly, other disintegrate in the sunlight.
I would like to try the kiddie pool with grow bags sometime but have issues with that too.
Mainly the mosquito's it can breed with all that standing warm water.
And thirsty animals/bugs that might decide to have a snack while taking a drink.
Another problem with kiddie pool is how do you trellis a tomato plant??
Not wanting to spend college money amounts just for a few extra tomatoes! lol

@@InTheGardenWithClaudia I bought Vevor air-pots ($56 for 12 of them). 1st ones I ever bought. NOT impressed with the design.
Top 2 rows should have been unpunched so you can water and walk away.
Occasional holes were not punched at all.
They come folded up in a box. Should have been a flat box. One was split right at the fold so we had to contact the company for a replacement. They were the 7.4 gal ones.
One a plus note, they have a superior bottom part - has 5 stubs to support the weight vs everyone else's one. And that one is installed on the bottom row instead of the 2nd or 3rd row up.
All materials used in the pot were store bought.
Bottom layer I used store bought garden soil, about an inch thick so as to slow down water drainage instead of running right through.
I mixed up 1 gal of potting soil, 1 gal of Happy Frog, 1 gal of Ocean forest, 3 handfuls of worm castings, one handful of Azomite, and about 16-20 ounces of water crystals (used Miracle grow bloom fertilizer in the water when charging the crystals - full strength as per package), and 1 gal of additional perlite for added safety. Water crystals were Soil Moist, regular variety, supposedly made from a corn product?
Mixed well and mixed in 1 gal of water.
Put a couple inches in the bottom of the air pot on top of the untreated garden soil.
Placed tomato plant in there, and filled in around the plant leaving about 3 inches from the top.
I also ordered the water beads (should be about marble sized) to fill with plain water and place on top, then cover with maybe some mulch.
Not sure about the mulch part just yet. Have to see how fast they dry out. But a layer of the water beads for sure.
I shouldn't have to fertilize for the rest of the season and watering I hope is once a week or so (more when it gets in the 90's).
Tomato cages might be a challenge though.
And a tomato stake will not fit through the bottom support strainer (slots not wide enough)
I plan on placing the air pots on a length of weed block (hate having to weed eat around things).
