"The Story of an Hour" is a short story written by Kate Chopin on April 19, 1894. It was originally published in Vogue on December 6, 1894, as "The Dream of an Hour". It was later reprinted in St. Louis Life on January 5, 1895, as "The Story of an Hour".
The title of the short story refers to the time elapsed between the moments at which the protagonist, Louise Mallard, hears that her husband is dead, then discovers that he is alive after all. Featuring a female protagonist who feels liberation at the news of her husband's death, "The Story of an Hour" was controversial by American standards of the 1890s. In Unveiling Kate Chopin, Emily Toth argues that Chopin "had to have her heroine die" in order to make the story publishable".[2] (The "heroine" dies when she sees her husband alive after he was thought to be dead.)

She loved her husband “sometimes” and he oppressed her. This is why she was scared to feel joyous emotions of freedom and happiness when she heard of his death. She didn’t die of joy, she died of shock and that second of freedom she felt was taken away.
yeah!
Nah she died of joy
true, maybe the doctor and everyone else assumed it was joy. at least she won't have to deal with his husband's oppression anymore. But still she lived a tragic life.
Correct but nowhere it is said that he oppressed her. She just didn't get her space in the marriage and felt suffocating in the relationship. That's why the death of her husband came as a news of freedom which gave her joy for she had always dreamt of a free life.
very true
A few corrections:
1. Louise Mallard actually finds out that she never really loved her husband that much. That is the ESSENCE of this story. She feels free and ecstatically happy once she has come to terms with the shocking news of the death.
2. Louise Mallard did not die of joy, she died because she was so shocked that her husband is alive and all her newly gained freedom vanished right in front of her eyes.
facts
Doctors said that she died because she find her husband alive so, she was happy to see him. According to society it is meant that she was happy to see her husband. It was doctor's oponion. But the reality was totally different.
Oh is that right
Was it because of the joy being free
Mrs.Mallard died of shock and sorrow after seeing her husband quite healthy and alive whom she believed to be dead...She was basking on the impending freedom that would follow after her husband's death...She was now free from the confines of an unwanted marriage...Thus when the unexpected happened, she could not bear that and died of heart attack of joy that kills

People out here saying that she didn't die of joy and that she didn't love her husband that much need to remember that this is an interpretation of the story, literal comprehension only deals with what the story directly says.
I love how this is a screen recording and we can hear you breathing into your mic
Awe!! Thanks a zillion!! Finally, all has been clarified now, clear as crystal clear!!
It happened that my book missed or perhaps just chose to not infixed quotation marks, leading in turn for students or readers to likely be trapped in and be confounded or either do misapprehend the whole story.
Again, thanks!

Josephine was worried to tell about the accident which killed her sister's ( Loius's) husband, because she apparently had a heart condition and such kind of news, of her dear husband's death, could trigger her immence sorrow, leading to fatal health or something worse--might causing death, even.
She broke down into tears and sorrow on hearing the news. Though quite regained herself the while, later. After an hour, when she comes with her sister, Josephine, down the stairs, she finds her husband alive, walking inn through the door and in very healthy state.
On watching her husband so, she couldn't but let her excitement of joy burst out in a state of shock, unable the heart being strong and adjust the unexpected situation , she collapsed, dead.
Wow! Excellent. Isilye there is a saying in Hindi....jyada khush na ho..😒😪
They didn't love each other, though? The story goes:
"And yet she loved him--sometimes. Often she had not."
By you saying "They loved each other very much" leads to a gross misinterpretation of the ending. Yes, the doctors say she died of joy, at seeing her husband alive. This is because it is the only "logical" explanation for a sickly woman of the 19th century who know one would believe did not worship her husband. But that is not the case for she did not love him and had just previously been rejoicing at her newfound freedom.
She died of shock and shattered dreams, not joy.
Thankyou for your explanation and for guiding us. You are right in the context of the story but due to bookish content We need to go from that.
Please share my channel with your friends so they may also get help from my channel.
@@ICSECBSELearning I have no idea what you mean by "due to bookish content" nor why you need to "go from that." By dismissing the complex feelings of Louise Mallard and assigning her love to her husband, you do Kate Chopin and her feminist themes a great disservice.
@@ms.sadler1766 I think she means the purpose of the video is to summarize the story, not to interpret it.
Yes Ma'am @Ms.Sadler, you're correct its the dramatic irony , it's the sadness that has killed her joy within the moment when she was realising that she would soon have her own feelings of independence, assertion and liberty. Seeing her husband back not only shocks her that he is still alive but also the fact that her dreams of living on her own like a free bird has shattered her "illuminated"joy and thus unable to bear this, she died of heart attack.
Yes ! You are right

Can u please say which app you used for this animation video

Thanks it helped alot
I am a bit confused. if they all thought brentley was dead, why did the sister and richard try to hide him from the wife?
To prevent Louise from getting a sudden shock I guess, but they miserably failed lol
Because she was a heart patient that s the reason I hope you understand very well
Why some say that Brently oppressed her? I don't think so because she cried after Knowing about Brently's death. Also, the story never mention that he was bad husband. In general, there was a prevalent idea that marriage is a limitation of freedom.
This is because of how many instances where the writer implied it. Esp in the part where "repression, and private opinions on others" were made. She feels a sense of freedom, which can also imply she was oppressed.
Really the story is wonderful

Such a sad story.. ...
Pov tomorrow is our ICS literature exam
There is a mistake in this animated video, Louise and Mallard both loved each other...no he didn't .
What a Irony
It kinda downplay the purpose of why she kept saying "Free Free Free" and "Free, Body and Soul" for it implying that she did not love husband as strongly as it portayed in the video
No sane woman would be happy,if her husband dies...
It only implies Mr mallod was very rude to him or atleast opresses or dominating him
Thx teatcher
When the battery notification come I think now only I charged my iPhone then how these notifications comes
Dem .. Hard luck Louise

To all those saying the husband oppressed her!! The point is.. theres a clear text in my reader's book which highlights that her husband was loving.. n that's why she was sad!! But the point is.. now she will be free and can do anything without anyone's advice.. "marriage was prison no matter how caring husband is" and that's what written in my book.. and that's why this poem is feminist...else it won't be
The story is incomplete and you have missed many lines.
Ya 😂
This one in ba English literature global yarns's chapter
At last doctor she died because of joy that kill but I think she died due to shock
No, I think that Mrs.Mallard's died because her freedom was suddenly taken away from her. The video clearly says it in the second last line

Was Mr. Mallard alive in the last scene or it was his soul that Lousie felt?
Are bhai dill Nhi chayiye, answer chayiye
@@jateenpandey4297 it was Mr. Mallard himself and it ia very clear as his friend Richards'tries to screen Mr. Mallard and Josephine cries wgen she sees him. So it wasn't his spirit but he himself.
In reality Mr. Mallard was never dead..
The news that he had died was not true.

When she said ''body and soul free'' she was referring to her husband or herself?
herself, in the real interpretation of the story, she was rejoicing the fact that she was a widow, free from her husband's clutches.
@@mangoncacao3655 Thank you so much!
@@mangoncacao3655
it does mean that her husband was very abusive or controlling, right?
@@gdas4092 Well, it was the 19th century I guess , and she used the word 'repressive' for their relationship , so maybe yes
excuse me madame but mrs mallard loved her husband and he loved her back some times as mentioned in the actual story . so the interpretation is wrong is miss in the video

@@ICSECBSELearning how can it be helpful if its different from the real story?
why was mrs Mallard “free at last “ when her husband was announced dead? Did she hate him?
she was oppressed (?) by him, she didn't die from joy but shock. she thought she could finally live freely.
