    I was part of Charlie battery 3/16th Field Artillery MLRS, 8th Inf. (MECH) and we were the second battery ever formed and the first one deployed to Europe in 1983-84. They call the system the Grid Square Killer, or Steel Rain because one 12 rocket Salvo will destroy everything within a 1000 meter by 1000 meter grid Square, and by the time the rocket is 13 ft out of the tube, it is at Mach 3.

    I do feel the British army needs to prioritise investment into its Deep-Fires capabilities through procuring many more of these systems, even if they are second hand, but then upgraded to the A2 standard with ER-GMLRS Munition and perhaps more significantly with ATACMS and eventually LM PrSt Missile. Our government should also pull out of the CCM Treaty, of which none of our enemies are tied to, and procure or develop a smart Sub-munitions variant of the ER-GMLRS Weapon akin to the CBU-105 Precision Guided Joint Sensor Fused Weapon in the US air launched weapons inventory.

    what its guidance system ??

    • @chernozulu157
      @chernozulu157 3 роки тому +1

      The entire system is a series of components, it’s complicated, but the component responsible for where rockets or guided missiles go is the Position Navigational unit(PNU), which cooperates with the IWIU and the LIU. And oh boy that’s not even the start.

    Would these be effective against naval targets to defend homeland territory in say pacific Island theatre such as Philippines?

      There ment to destroy veichals so I'd say yes. Plus aperently the navy uses them as well.

      There's no reason why they couldn't be effective in damaging ships. Might not sink one. These rockets are equipped with cluster bombs which can penetrate (if I remember correctly) up to 2 inches of steel. They're not so much a point-target weapon as they are an area weapon, designed to destroy vehicles and infantry. Attacking a ship on the move that is maneuvering might be a bit difficult, but with the right pre-planning you can be time on target no problem. These would definitely do some serious damage to a ship. Sink it? Not sure. Depends on how many time you hit it. But a 6 round fire mission - if it didn't sink it - it would do some really massive damage. Probably take the ship completely out of use. But it's also likely that the missiles could be intercepted by defensive missiles and anti-missile ballistics before it hit. Primary charge detonates about 500 feet above the target, so.. not even sure if they would be effective against ships that can get out of the way and counter-fire.

      These rockets release many bomblets and cover a significant area. A 3 section platoon could potentially launch 36 rockets in one minute and would be sure to do some significant damage to the top of the ship. I don't know that it could actually sink the ship though.
