- Twenty years after Daniel Toanaroi, or Rubber, as he was widely known, hosted his own death rites, the film Rubber's Kastom has been remastered and made available here on UA-cam.
This film was shot in 2004 in Siar, and throughout the Lak region in Southern New Ireland. It was completed and screened to Rubber and the communities of Lak in 2010.
Rubber was the most senior Yain Pindik (leader of the tubuan society) of his time. He was instrumental in reviving the tubuan practice after it was banned by the Catholic church.
The tubuan (tumbuan) culture remains strong today in the Lak region and the villages of Siar, Rei, Morkorn and throughout Konoagil, New Ireland partly as a result of Rubber's efforts.
Paul Wolffram (filmmaker) spent two years living and working among the Lak people while conducting his anthropology work and eventually producing a series of three ethnographic films about the Lak people. The films produced were 'Rubber's Kastom', 'Stori Tumbuna,' and 'What Lies That Way'. All three films provide insight to Lak culture, music and dance and record interactions and engagement with the Lak people over 20 years. - Фільми й анімація
