The first ever American football is the ball used in the Princeton vs Rutgers game in 1869, more than 70 years before the 1940s ball shown in the video. The ball in the video isn’t even the first NFL ball as the ball changed shape and size in 1932 and the first NFL season was in 1920. Also, the “old” ball in this video is worn and weathered. A new ball in 1940 used for a game wouldn’t have been like that.
That’s actually pretty interesting. I always assumed that the quality of the athletes was just improving over time, and that was the reason why passing and receiving records are broken so often these days. Apparently it’s just the ball. Crazy!
Basically, Sammy Baugh is the greatest NFL player of all time. Guy was the greatest QB AND punter of his time with this horrendous ball. 187TD's passing And AVERAGING 45 yards per punt. With a then NFL record of an 85 yard punt. He also a top DB of his era, as well.
The old footballs are what made the passing yards and gameplay that much more impressive, looking back imo. Doesn’t mean it was optimal however. Interesting. I’d have to see it tested more to form a full opinion.
did they even pass it back then? You know i always wondered what it would be like if both the NFL and the NBA had variations where they played with the old rules.
@@jmgonzales7701 I wish they had a seperate league for that too. But I have a feeling unless it was majority or all old rules that aren’t used/have* been replaced, people will think it’s “redundant” or not worth it. I do like seeing the XFL’s rule differences though.
That’s not the first EVER American football. It may be the first ever “modern version” American football, but they’ve played football in America for a LONG time with a lot of different shaped and sized balls.
That’s no where near the “first American football.” That ball is pretty modern compared to the actual original balls. Consider that the first ball wasn’t designed to be thrown at all. Considering the forward pass wasn’t even legal. The 1940s was pass happy compared to the 20s. The 20s were pass crazy compared to turn of the century football…
This is one of the reasons that you can always blame genetics as to why players are better now than back in the day. Think about when professional football began most of those players in the league never played football prior to joining the league, now a lot of these players have been training for football since they started walking. Training, nutrition, and supplements/drugs has significantly improved since then as well which is why players now are bigger, faster, and stronger and it’s not because of genetics as a whole got better. The use of creatine is much higher which the most studied and proven supplement that can increase your performance. Technology and equipment has also significantly improved just lighter playing with a lighter football.
